1. Deep Learning-Based Model Predictive Control for Resonant Power Converters

Abstract

Resonant power converters offer improved levels of efficiency and power density. In order to implement such systems, advanced control techniques are required to take the most of the power converter. In this context, model predictive control arises as a powerful tool that is able to consider nonlinearities and constraints, but it requires the solution of complex optimization problems or strong simplifying assumptions that hinder its application in real situations. Motivated by recent theoretical advances in the field of deep learning, this paper proposes to learn, offline, the optimal control policy defined by a complex model predictive formulation using deep neural networks so that the online use of the learned controller requires only the evaluation of a neural network. The obtained learned controller can be executed very rapidly on embedded hardware. We show the potential of the presented approach on a Hardware-in-the-Loop setup of an FPGA-controlled resonant power converter., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures

Abstract

Induction heating is an efficient and high-performance heating method which already has a significant market penetration and economic impact due to its benefits inherent to contactless energy transfer systems such as quickness, cleanness, and safety. Efficiency is a key design parameter since it determines not only the appliance performance but also its environmental impact, with significant socio-political implications. However, it is not easy to determine and compare the actual power converter efficiency operating under highly variable conditions typical of IH. This paper proposes an averaged efficiency parameter elaborated based on technical and typical IH usage conditions that offers a useful value to compare power converters operating under realistic operation conditions. 8. Comparative Evaluation of Different Cables for Magnetic Couplers in Inductive Power Transfer Systems

Abstract

Copper litz wires are widely used in wireless charging stations of light-duty electric vehicles. This type of cable is specifically mentioned in the SAE J2954 standard. However, details as the number and diameter of strands, or the material of conductors are not mentioned in the standard, which makes room to address some research and innovations. In this work, several alternatives to the traditional copper-litz wires are analyzed. Specifically, aluminum litz wire, copper-clad aluminum litz wire, and copper tubes are considered as alternatives to standard litz wire for the mentioned application. Potential benefits of the considered alternatives could include weight and cost savings. However, these advantages could not be enough to justify a wiring change if the resistance of the power pads increases and, equivalently, the efficiency of the electromagnetic power transfer decreases. For this reason, a model of the parasitic resistance of windings is proposed by combining the analytical ac resistance of two-layered round strands and finite element simulations. This model is used to obtain a figure of merit related with the efficiency of the electromagnetic energy transfer which is used to compare the different cables. Apart from efficiency, thermal behavior, cost and weight are also considered for comparison purposes. As a result, some conclusions about the suitability of each cable with respect to the operating frequency range are extracted.

18. Multiple Output Inverter and Monitoring System for Homogeneous Electroporation.

Abstract

Electroporation is a phenomenon that increases the permeability of cells by applying an electric field. This technique has relevant applications to cancer treatment using both electrochemotherapy and tumor ablation using irreversible electroporation. In order to carry out these treatments, new power converters are needed to apply of output voltages of several kV and output currents of tens of A in pulses of a width of μs. In addition, to achieve safe and relapse-free treatments, it is necessary to generate a controlled and uniform electric field. A challenge in current treatments is to ensure effective treatments despite tissue heterogeneity. In this context, this article proposes a new pulse generator that allows the use of a multielectrode structure that enables the application of a uniform electric field in multiple directions to avoid issues related to tissue heterogeneity. The proposed generator also allows the continuous monitoring of the treatment to adequately control the generator and apply a safer and more effective treatment. An 18-output 1500-V experimental prototype was designed, implemented, and tested using vegetal tissue, proving the feasibility of this proposal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Modern induction heating systems involve usually many non-linear systems with different constraints, making difficult implementing classical controllers. In this context, model predictive control arises as a powerful technique able to provide high performance controllers with advanced functionalities. This paper will discuss the benefits of this control technique for induction heating systems and will provide an example of application for domestic systems.
