Abstract

We propose Radibot, a simple and cheap robotic arm for remote inspection, which interacts with the radwaste environment by means of a scintillation gamma detector and a video camera representing its light (< 1 kg) payload. It moves vertically thanks to a crane, while the other three degrees of freedom are obtained by means of revolute joints. A dedicated algorithm allows to automatically choose the best kinematics in order to reach a graphically selected position, while still allowing to fully drive the arm by means of a standard videogame joypad.

Abstract

The worldwide need to replace 3He for the neutron detection has triggered R&D on new technologies and methods. A promising one is based on commercial solid state silicon detectors coupled with thin neutron converter layers containing 6Li. After proving the feasibility of this technique, we characterized the behavior of such a detector with different converter layer thicknesses. In this paper we also disentangle other contributions to the overall spectrum shape observed with this kind of detector, proving that its detection efficiency can be made reasonably high and that the gamma/neutron discrimination capability is comparable to the one of 3He tubes., Comment: Submitted to Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research, section A

Abstract

Summary: This work investigates the effect of the addition of small amounts of Ru (0.5‐1 wt%) to carbon supported Co (10 wt%) catalysts towards both NaBH4 and NH3BH3 hydrolysis for H2 production. In the sodium borohydride hydrolysis, the activity of Ru‐Co/carbon catalysts was sensibly higher than the sum of the activities of corresponding monometallic samples, whereas for the ammonia borane hydrolysis, the positive effect of Ru‐Co systems with regard to catalytic activity was less evident. The performances of Ru‐Co bimetallic catalysts correlated with the occurrence of an interaction between Ru and Co species resulting in the formation of smaller ruthenium and cobalt oxide particles with a more homogeneous dispersion on the carbon support. It was proposed that Ru°, formed during the reduction step of the Ru‐Co catalysts, favors the H2 activation, thus enhancing the reduction degree of the cobalt precursor and the number of Co nucleation centers. A subsequent reduction of cobalt and ruthenium species also occurs in the hydride reaction medium, and therefore the state of the catalyst before the catalytic experiment determines the state of the active phase formed in situ. The different relative reactivity of the Ru and Co active species towards the two investigated reactions accounted for the different behavior towards NaBH4 and NH3BH3 hydrolysis. 46. Effect of the Al/Si Atomic Ratio on Surface and Structural Properties of Sol-Gel Prepared Aluminosilicates

Abstract

A series of aluminosilicates with an Al/Si ratio ranging from 0 to infinite (0 for pure silica and infinite for pure alumina) was prepared by sol-gel process and characterized by surface and structure techniques. Aluminum trisecbutoxide and tetramethylorthosilicate were used as precursors for the sol-gel synthesis. The acidic properties of the oxides were studied by determination of the zero point charges, through mass titration method, and, for selected samples, by FT-IR spectroscopy of adsorbed pyridine used as a probe for both Brønsted and Lewis acidity. A dependence of the acidity on the Al/Si atomic ratio was found. According to the X-ray diffraction patterns, all the oxides have an amorphous structure except pure alumina exhibiting a g-alumina pattern. The surface areas of the mixed oxides increase with increasing amount of alumina and are higher as compared to the individual oxides. The surface elemental distribution and electronic properties were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. According to the results, good agreement between the surface Al/Si atomic ratio and the analytical ratio is obtained.
