Analyses of macroscopic charcoal, sediment geochemistry (%C, %N, C/N, δ13C, δ15N), and fossil pollen were conducted on a sediment core recovered from Stella Lake, Nevada, establishing a 2000 year record of fire history and vegetation change for the Great Basin. Charcoal accumulation rates (CHAR) indicate that fire activity, which was minimal from the beginning of the first millennium to AD 750, increased slightly at the onset of the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA). Observed changes in catchment vegetation were driven by hydroclimate variability during the early MCA. Two notable increases in CHAR, which occurred during the Little Ice Age (LIA), were identified as major fire events within the catchment. Increased C/N, enriched δ15N, and depleted δ13C values correspond with these events, providing additional evidence for the occurrence of catchment-scale fire events during the late fifteenth and late sixteenth centuries. Shifts in the vegetation community composition and structure accompanied these fires, withPinusandPiceadecreasing in relative abundance and Poaceae increasing in relative abundance following the fire events. During the LIA, the vegetation change and lacustrine geochemical response was most directly influenced by the occurrence of catchment-scale fires, not regional hydroclimate.

A comprehensive database of paleoclimate records is needed to place recent warming into the longer-term context of natural climate variability. We present a global compilation of quality-controlled, published, temperature-sensitive proxy records extending back 12,000 years through the Holocene. Data were compiled from 679 sites where time series cover at least 4000 years, are resolved at sub-millennial scale (median spacing of 400 years or finer) and have at least one age control point every 3000 years, with cut-off values slackened in data-sparse regions. The data derive from lake sediment (51%), marine sediment (31%), peat (11%), glacier ice (3%), and other natural archives. The database contains 1319 records, including 157 from the Southern Hemisphere. The multi-proxy database comprises paleotemperature time series based on ecological assemblages, as well as biophysical and geochemical indicators that reflect mean annual or seasonal temperatures, as encoded in the database. This database can be used to reconstruct the spatiotemporal evolution of Holocene temperature at global to regional scales, and is publicly available in Linked Paleo Data (LiPD) format. Mountains of the arid Great Basin region of Nevada are home to critical water resources and numerous species of plants and animals. Understanding the nature of climatic variability in these environments, especially in the face of unfolding climate change, is a challenge for resource planning and adaptation. Here, we utilize an Embedded Sensor Network (ESN) to investigate landscape-scale temperature variability in Great Basin National Park (GBNP). The ESN was installed in 2006 and has been maintained during uninterrupted annual student research training expeditions. The ESN is comprised of 29 Lascar sensors that record hourly near-surface air temperature and relative humidity at locations spanning 2000 m and multiple ecoregions within the park. From a maximum elevation near 4000 m a.s.l. atop Wheeler Peak, the sensor locations are distributed: (1) along a multi-mountain ridgeline to the valley floor, located ~2000 m lower; (2) along two streams in adjoining eastern-draining watersheds; and (3) within multiple ecological zones including sub-alpine forests, alpine lakes, sagebrush meadows, and a rock glacier. After quality checking all available hourly observations, we analyze a twelve-year distributed temperature record for GBNP and report on key patterns of variability. From 2006 to 2018, there were significantly increasing trends in daily maximum, minimum and mean temperatures for all elevations. The average daily minimum temperatures increased by 2.1°C. The trend in daily maximum temperatures above 3500 m was significantly greater than the increasing trends at lower elevations, suggesting that daytime forcings may be driving enhanced warming at GBNP’s highest elevations. These results indicate that existing weather stations, such as the Wheeler Peak SNOTEL site, alone cannot account for small-scale variability found in GBNP. This study offers an alternative, low-cost methodology for sustaining long-term, distributed observations of conditions in heterogeneous mountainous environments at finer spatial resolutions. In arid mountainous regions with vulnerable water resources and fragile ecosystems, it is imperative to maintain and extend existing networks and observations as climate change continues to alter conditions.

High resolution analysis of subfossil chironomid remains preserved in well-dated lacustrine sediment cores was undertaken to identify whether marked shifts in chironomid assemblages have occurred in recent decades in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. This study will improve our understanding of site-specific aquatic ecosystem variability in the central Colorado Rockies during the 20th and early 21st centuries. An observed increase in chironomid taxa associated with warmer, more productive lakes, e.g. Dicrotendipes, is consistent with the movement of these lakes towards more productive aquatic systems in recent decades. The application of a chironomid-based inference model for mean July air temperature (MJAT) to the midge stratigraphies from these sites provide centennial length reconstructions of MJAT. The chironomid-inferred reconstructions of MJAT closely track gridded MJAT estimates for much of the 20th century; however, the response of the chironomid community is muted relative to the elevated temperatures that characterize this region during the last decade. Complementary analyses of sub-fossil chironomid records, previously developed from additional high elevation lakes located throughout the Intermountain West of the United States, indicate that the rate and magnitude of faunal turnover during the late 20th and early 21st centuries surpass the rate and magnitude of faunal turnover during any preceding interval in the last century. Direct gradient analyses reveal that the chironomid assemblages in the majority of sites became increasingly similar in composition to the assemblages associated with warmer, lower elevation sites between the early 20th and early 21st century.

For the Western North America Mercury Synthesis, we compiled mercury records from 165 dated sediment cores from 138 natural lakes across western North America. Lake sediments are accepted as faithful recorders of historical mercury accumulation rates, and regional and sub-regional temporal and spatial trends were analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistics. Mercury accumulation rates in sediments have increased, on average, four times (4×) from 1850 to 2000 and continue to increase by approximately 0.2μg/m(2) per year. Lakes with the greatest increases were influenced by the Flin Flon smelter, followed by lakes directly affected by mining and wastewater discharges. Of lakes not directly affected by point sources, there is a clear separation in mercury accumulation rates between lakes with no/little watershed development and lakes with extensive watershed development for agricultural and/or residential purposes. Lakes in the latter group exhibited a sharp increase in mercury accumulation rates with human settlement, stabilizing after 1950 at five times (5×) 1850 rates. Mercury accumulation rates in lakes with no/little watershed development were controlled primarily by relative watershed size prior to 1850, and since have exhibited modest increases (in absolute terms and compared to that described above) associated with (regional and global) industrialization. The geochemistry of lake sediments was used to identify anthropogenic factors influencing aquatic ecosystems of sub-alpine lakes in the western United States during the past century. Sediment cores were recovered from six high-elevation lakes in the central Great Basin of the United States. The proxies utilized to examine the degree of recent anthropogenic environmental change include spheroidal carbonaceous particle (SCP), mercury (Hg), and sediment organic content estimated using loss-on-ignition. Chronologies for the sediment cores, developed using 210Pb, indicate the cores span the twentieth century. Mercury flux varied between lakes but all exhibited increasing fluxes during the mid-twentieth century. The mean ratio of modern (post-A.D. 1985) to preindustrial (pre-A.D. 1880) Hg flux was 5.2, which is comparable to the results from previous studies conducted in western North America. Peak SCP flux for all lakes occurred between approximately A.D. 1940 and A.D. 1970, after which time the SCP flux was greatly reduced. The reduction in SCP input is likely due to better controls on combustion sources. Measured Hg concentrations and calculated sedimentation rates suggest atmospheric Hg flux increased in the early 1900s, from A.D. 1920 to A.D. 1990, and at present. Atmospheric deposition is the primary source of the anthropogenic inputs of Hg and SCPs to these high elevation lakes. The input of SCPs, which is largely driven by regional sources, has declined with the implementation of national pollution control regulations. Mercury deposition in the Great Basin has most likely been influenced more by regional inputs.

A sediment core representing the past two millennia was recovered from Stella Lake in the Snake Range of the central Great Basin in Nevada. The core was analyzed for sub-fossil chironomids and sediment organic content. A quantitative reconstruction of mean July air temperature (MJAT) was developed using a regional training set and a chironomid-based WA-PLS inference model (r2jack= 0.55, RMSEP = 0.9°C). The chironomid-based MJAT reconstruction suggests that the interval between AD 900 and AD 1300, corresponding to the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA), was characterized by MJAT elevated 1.0°C above the subsequent Little Ice Age (LIA), but likely not as warm as recent conditions. Comparison of the Stella Lake temperature reconstruction to previously published paleoclimate records from this region indicates that the temperature fluctuations inferred to have occurred at Stella Lake between AD 900 and AD 1300 correspond to regional records documenting hydroclimate variability during the MCA interval. The Stella Lake record provides evidence that elevated summer temperature contributed to the increased aridity that characterized the western United States during the MCA.

Chironomids (nonbiting midges) are used to develop centennial length temperature reconstructions for six subalpine and alpine lakes in the central Great Basin of the United States. Faunal turnover, assessed by detrended correspondence analysis (DCA), indicate that substantial compositional change in the midge communities has occurred during the past 100 years. Although the changes in composition are site-specific, increases in Dicrotendipes and decreases in Procladius characterize the late 20th century at a majority of the sites. Notable faunal turnover in midge community composition is observed at five of the six sites beginning at approximately A.D. 1970. Application of a chironomid-based mean July air temperature inference model (r 2 jack = 0.55, RMSEP = 0.9 °C) to the subfossil chironomid assemblages provides site-specific quantitative reconstructions of past temperature variability for the 20th and 21st centuries. Sediment cores were recovered from Stella Lake and Baker Lake, sub-alpine lakes located in Great Basin National Park, NV, in 2005 and 2007, respectively. The cores were analyzed for subfossil chironomid (Insecta: Diptera: Chironomidae) remains. Chronologies for the sediment cores, developed using 210Pb, indicate the cores span the 20th century. The midge communities present in the lakes experience muted compositional change through much of the 20th century; however, the post-AD 1980 interval is notable due to rapid lake-specific faunal turnover. The recently deposited sediment in Baker Lake is characterized by decreases in the relative of abundance of Psectrocladius semicirculatus/sordillelus, Cladotanytarsus mancus group and Procladius, the local extirpation of Chironomus, and an increase the proportion of Sergentia, Tanytarsus type G and Tanytarsus type B. The Stella Lake midge community experienced a shift post-AD 1990 from an assemblage dominated by Tanytarsus type G to a P. semicirculatus/sordillelus dominated community. Application of a chironomid-based inference model for mean July air temperature (MJAT), based on a calibration set developed for the Inter-Mountain West of the United States consisting of 79 lakes and 54 midge taxa (rjack2 = 0.55 °C, RMSEP = 0.9 °C, maximum bias = 1.66 °C), provided a means to reconstruct the 20th century temperature regime for the region. Stella Lake and Baker Lake experience large fluctuations in MJAT during the early to mid-20th century and consistently above average temperature during the late-20th century. The chironomid-inferred MJAT reconstructions for Stella Lake and Baker Lake track observed July temperature in the region encompassed by Nevada Climate Division #2 during the late-20th century.

A sediment core spanning ∼ 7000 cal yr BP recovered from Stella Lake, a small sub-alpine lake located in Great Basin National Park, Nevada, was analyzed for subfossil chironomids (non-biting midges), diatoms, and organic content (estimated by loss-on-ignition (LOI)). Subfossil chironomid analysis indicates that Stella Lake was characterized by a warm, middle Holocene, followed by a cool “Neoglacial” period, with the last two millennia characterized by a return to warmer conditions. Throughout the majority of the core the Stella Lake diatom-community composition is dominated by small, periphytic taxa which are suggestive of shallow, cool, alkaline, oligotrophic waters with extensive seasonal ice cover. A reconstruction of mean July air temperature (MJAT) was developed by applying a midge-based inference model for MJAT (two-component WA-PLS) consisting of 79 lakes and 54 midge taxa (rjack2= 0.55, RMSEP = 0.9°C). Comparison of the chironomid-inferred temperature record to existing regional paleoclimate reconstructions suggests that the midge-inferred temperatures correspond well to regional patterns. This multi-proxy record provides valuable insight into regional Holocene climate and environmental conditions by providing a quantitative reconstruction of peak Holocene warmth and aquatic ecosystem response to these changes in the Great Basin, a region projected to experience increased aridity and higher temperatures.
