This pamphlet offers a preview of information services available from Solcost, a research and development project. The first section explains that Solcost calculates system and costs performance for solar heated and cooled new and retrofit constructions, such as residential buildings and single zone commercial buildings. For a typical analysis, Solcost calculates the portion of load supplied by solar, the optimum size for the collector, and the payback period for the solar system investment compared to a conventional system. An example is given of an analysis for a residence. Titles and sources of Solcost handbooks are listed. This pamphlet reviews the direct transfer of solar energy into heat, particularly for the purpose of providing space and hot water heating needs. Owners of buildings and homes are provided with a basic understanding of solar heating and hot water systems: what they are, how they perform, the energy savings possible, and the cost factors involved. This handbook is intended as a guide for engineers, architects, and individuals familiar with heating and ventilating applications who wish to design a solar heating system for a residential or small commercial building in the Pacific Coast Region. The climate of the region is discussed by selected cities in terms of the effect of climate on solar heating requirements. The four states covered are California, Oregon, Washington, and Arizona. Presented in detail are the design parameters and performance characteristics of liquid space heating systems of the active type using flat plate collectors, water heat storage, and forced air distribution; active air space heating systems using flat plate collectors, rock-bed storage, and forced air distribution; and domestic hot water heaters of the active type using liquid-cooled flat plate collectors. The analyses are based on hour-by-hour computer simulations using actual weather data from six selected cities. The collector area required for the three types of active systems has been determined as well as the effect of changes in all the design parameters. A simple, empirical, monthly solar-load ratio method for determining collector area is described and results are presented for 13 additional locations within the region. Swimming pool heaters are described briefly, and passive space heating systems are discussed qualitatively in terms of a number of successful designs. (Author)

Focusing on occupations in energy-producing industries, this document is one in a series of forty-one reprints from the Occupational Outlook Handbook providing current information and employment projections for individual occupations and industries through 1985. The specific occupations covered in this document include coal mining, occupations in the electric power industry, powerplant occupations, transmission and distribution occupations, customer service occupations, occupations in the nuclear energy field, occupations in petroleum and natural gas production and gas processing, and occupations in the petroleum refining industry. The following information is presented for each occupation or occupational area: a code number referenced to the Dictionary of Occupational Titles; a description of the nature of the work; places of employment; training, other qualifications, and advancement; employment outlook; earnings and working conditions; and sources of additional information. In addition to the forty-one reprints covering individual occupations or occupational areas (CE 017 757-797), a companion document (CE 017 756) presents employment projections for the total labor market and discusses the relationship between job prospects and education. This training course and a companion course titled "Design of Systems for Solar Heating and Cooling of Residential Buildings," are designed to train home designers and builders in the fundamentals of solar hydronic and air systems for space heating and cooling and domestic hot water heating for residential buildings. Each course, organized in 22 modules, provides 44 hours of instruction. The modularized structure of the training courses provides considerable latitude in organization and presentation, especially with regard to the time period over which the course could be presented. Included in each course are directed periods for computational practice, inspection of working systems, and "hands-on" experience with models. Course standards and needs were developed by interacting with architects, engineers, builders, contractors, and installers of heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems in residential buildings. Courses by Newspaper is a program presenting college-level courses to the public through the cooperation of newspapers and participating colleges. The 1250-word articles, written by experts in the field and published in newspapers beginning in January 1980, focus on the nature and dimensions of our current energy dilemma, place it in historical perspective, and consider its implications for our way of life as individuals and as a nation. They also examine the potentials and limitations of alternative energy sources as well as moral, social, political, and economic issues involved in our energy choices. Specific topics are our energetic lifestyle, the nature of the energy crisis, ways energy was generated in the past, 19th and 20th century developments, waste, use of energy in other countries, international politics relating to energy, energy and the third world, conventional fuels in transition, nuclear and solar energy, synthetic fuels, effective energy use, and future choices and trade-offs. The guide presents teaching suggestions and lists resources to be used with the twelfth Course by Newspaper, "Energy and the Way We Live." Courses by Newspaper is a program presenting college-level courses to the public through the cooperation of newspapers and participating colleges. Other components of this course are the Article Booklet (SO 012 723) and the Reader/Study Guide (SO 012 724). The guide is divided into four sections. Section I describes how to use this course, including a list of national participating organizations, and a statement of objectives and needed planning. Section II offers teaching suggestions for 15 lessons focusing on our energetic lifestyle, the energy crisis, the history of energy use, waste, recent energy patterns, use in other countries, international politics relating to energy, nuclear and solar energy, synthetic fuels, and future choices and tradeoffs. Each lesson includes suggestions for background readings from the Reader/Study Guide, periodicals, and books, as well as discussion questions and activity suggestions. The activities make heavy use of experts as speakers and films, but also include making an ongoing rating chart, a questionnaire, and an energy index; debating; and making comparisons. Presented are architectural design issues associated with solar energy use, and procedures for design review committees to consider in examining residential solar installation in light of existing aesthetic goals for their communities. Recommended design review criteria include the type of solar system being used and the ways in which the system relates to the building's design, the building site, and the neighborhood. Also described are the appearance and functions of various types of solar energy systems. By using these guidelines, along with the manufacturer's manual, professional installation contractors and skilled homeowners should be able to install and fill a solar DHW system. Among the topics considered are system layouts, siting, mounting procedures, pipes, insulation, heat exchangers, system controls, and safety. This manual is intended to guide developers, site planners, and builders in designing residential developments so that access to sunlight is maintained for planned or potential solar collectors. Almost any housing development can be designed to facilitate the use of solar energy. Differences are not in costs but in planning. Described in this guidebook are the major elements of planning a housing site to protect solar access. These developments are: (1) site selection and analysis, (2) preliminary site planning, (3) general design approaches and techniques, (4) specific design strategies, (5) landscaping and plantings, and (6) covenants and easements. Also presented are two case studies which demonstrate the application of approaches and techniques discussed. Over 100 figures and tables supplement the written material. (WB)

Presented in this teacher's manual are more than 40 energy-related discussions and projects for use in conjunction with secondary school courses in mathematics, science, social studies, and language arts. Designed to help students discover ways to study and conserve energy, the activities also stress alternate energy sources and their applications. Lessons are organized under four categories: (1) energy conservation, (2) solar energy concepts, (3) solar energy applications, and (4) alternate energy sources. Typical among these activities are constructing a solar collector, debating offshore drilling proposals, tracking the sun by computer, and investigating the effects of thermal pollution. Included in the lesson plans are teacher background material, suggestions for lesson preparation, lists of related activities, student handouts, and step-by-step procedures for conducting the activities. It may also be useful for those who work with children primarily in outdoor settings. Decisions as to which activities are appropriate for particular age levels are left to the teacher.
