Surface ozone concentrations (O3) during the period 2006–2021 are analysed at Córdoba city (southern Iberian Peninsula) in suburban and urban sampling sites. The aims are to present the levels and temporal variations, to explore trends and to quantity the variation in O3 concentrations in the context of the COVID-19 lockdown. The O3 means are higher in the suburban station (62 µg m−3 and 51.3 µg m−3), being the information level threshold only exceeded twice during this period. The daily evolution shows a maximum at about 17:00 UTC, whereas the minimum is reached at about 9:00 UTC, with higher levels in the suburban station. The seasonal evolution of this daily cycle also presents monthly differences in shape and intensity between stations. The trends are analysed by means of daily averages and daily 5th and 95th percentiles, and they show a similar increase in all of these parameters, with special emphasis on the daily P95 concentrations, with 0.27 µg m−3 year−1 and 0.24 µg m−3 year−1. Finally, the impact of the COVID-19 lockdown shows a decline in O3 concentrations over 10%.

In the Mediterranean scenery of the south-western Iberian Peninsula, vineyards and wine-making have consistently been key pieces of the man-made cultural landscape, influencing urban design and even housing. This paper compares wine production influence in the cities of Borba, in Portuguese Alentejo, Jerez de la Frontera and Bollullos Par del Condado, in Spanish Andalusia, throughout the spheres of territorial organization, urban layout, presence of production buildings inside urban areas, and winemaker and wineworker housing. The study is based on architectonic surveys of building types: wineries, dwellings and houses with integrated wine production on both sides of the Guadiana River. The information gathered in surveys is complemented with data from historical documents, such as transaction records from the 16th to the 19th centuries. The research analyses cycles of prosperity for the three case studies – which are often coincident and related, within the frame of pre-industrial global trade – and the effects of those in winery and housing typologies. Across the studied area, vernacular winery types adhere to the same two categories, or typological lines, of building: the domestic winery and the autonomous building. Wine related architecture is still a key asset in these cities' material and cultural heritage, as it provides scale and uniqueness to the urban and rural ensembles, despite the fact that wine production has been removed from cities’ centres to outer industrial wineries. The memory of wine-induced prosperity is imprinted on the cities’ physical realities, giving meaning to their collective memories and proving to be an asset to future development.

This paper presents the easternmost mineralogical and geochemical evidence of the 1755 Lisbon tsunami found in the Western Mediterranean. This multidisciplinary analysis of a sediment core obtained in Gibraltar (southern Iberian Peninsula) has allowed us to differentiate a tsunamiite from an old lagoon (The Inundation). This tsunamigenic layer has increased levels of calcite and aragonite and higher concentrations of Ba and ferromagnesian elements in comparison with the underlying lagoonal sediments of this core. This layer is also differentiated by its paleontological record, with the introduction of marine species within this lagoon. The uppermost part of the core includes a transition from swampy/marsh paleoenvironments to terrestrial scenarios, with a final anthropogenic filling occurring during the last century, This work was carried out through the following projects: a) DGYCIT project CTM2006- 06722/MAR; b) DGYCIT project CGL2006-01412; and c) FEDER 2014-2020 project UHU-1260298. A study of the flora and vegetation of a serpentine outcrop in the south of the Iberian Peninsula (Malaga, Spain) has been carried out. The study area is located in the Bermejense biogeographical sector (Baetic province, Mediterranean region) and shows a Mediterranean pluviseasonal-oceanic bioclimate. Most of the outcrop is altered by urban planning linked to tourism and affected by invasive alien species. Three areas remain more intact. A catalogue of vascular flora has been completed, made up of 168 taxa, including three threatened species, four obligate serpentinophytes, one preferential serpentinophyte, and one subserpentinophyte (majority of populations on serpentine). Seven taxa are South-Iberian ultramafic endemics. Silene inaperta subsp. serpentinicola is an obligate serpentinophyte and threatened endemism. Twelve alien taxa have been identified showing invasive potential, 75% of them originating from inactive dumps. The richness of serpentinophytes / area fits in the trend of the southern outcrops of the Iberian Peninsula. Four associations and one community have been identified. The serpentine perennial grassland stands out for its abundance and dominance, for which a new association is proposed (Scorzonero boeticae-Macrochloetum tenacissimae ass. nova). We thank Ralph Kreutz for analytical support., The transitional regions between the low and high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere are highly vulnerable to future climate change yet most of the current climate models usually diverge in their projections. To better understand the dynamics in these regions, the reconstruction of past hydrological fluctuations and precipitation patterns is of paramount importance to accurately constrain present and future climate scenarios. In this study, we investigated paleohydrological dynamics in the western Mediterranean region, a transitional zone between low-mid latitudes and Atlantic - Mediterranean realms. We reconstruct precipitation and moisture source changes during the last -35 ka in order to propose the potential mechanisms driving these oscillations. To do so, we use hydrogen isotopes from sedimentary leaf waxes, more specifically the C31 n-alkane homologue, and a precipitation proxy based on previously published pollen data from a sedimentary core (Padul-15-05) in southern Iberia (Padul wetland -37-N). With this combination we disentangle the coupled effect of precipitation amount and source on the hydrogen isotopic signature of the studied C31 n-alkane record. Our results show three main periods characterized by different precipitation patterns. Low precipitation, mainly linked to a significant contribution from an isotopically-enriched Mediterranean precipitation source, occurred from -30 to -15.5 ka BP and during the last -5 ka, whereas enhanced precipitation with a predominant isotopically-depleted Atlantic precipitation source prevailed from -15.5 to -5 ka BP. This latter stage is here defined as the Western Mediterranean Humid Period (WMHP). In addition, some occasional millennial-scale opposite precipitation patterns can be observed during these climatically distinct periods. These changes in the source of precipitation were likely coupled to a shift in the main rainy season from winter, when Atlantic precipitation prevailed, to late winter-early spring, when the contribution of Mediterranean moisture is higher. This article focuses on the study of the Early Iron Age necropolis of Esfola, taking into account the burial rituals of the site (the architecture, the funerary objects and the human skeletal analyses are dealt with in the context of ‘burial ritual’ studies). This research will contribute to the body of knowledge on Early Iron Age necropolises with enclosures, typical of the Beja and Ourique regions in southern Portugal, i.e. Vinha das Caliças 4, Monte do Bolor 1–2, Cinco Réis 8, Carlota and Palhais. All these sites identified in the southern Iberian Peninsula allow us to characterize the funerary rituals practised in this region during the Early Iron Age.

The Guadalquivir River Valley constitutes the main geographic environment for the earliest development of political structures in the South of the Iberian Peninsula. The inception of Cu-metallurgy over the millennia 4th to 2nd BC in this region coincides with the rise of social complexity as well as the strategic control of the territory based on the command of the supply of mineral resources. One of the main tools in the study of metallurgical processes and goods movement is the analysis of metal provenance by means of Pb isotope composition. This study includes 98 new Pb isotope analyses performed on Cu mineralizations, many of them with archaeological evidence of exploitation by the first metallurgical societies. The results provided here represent a substantial complement to those presented in published databases and allow for a better discrimination of potential sources for raw material supply of minerals used in the metallurgical processes. The existence of uncertainties introduced by the overlapping of Pb-isotope signatures of Cu-ores obtained from different geological contexts and presence of radiogenic Pb in a number of samples is pointed out., El Valle del Río Guadalquivir representa el principal entorno geográfico del primer desarrollo de estructuras políticas en el Sur de la Península Ibérica. El establecimiento de la metalurgia del cobre a lo largo del cuarto al segundo milenio a. C. en esta región coincide con el inicio de la complejidad social y el control estratégico del territorio basados en el control del suministro de recursos minerales. Una de las herramientas principales para el estudio de los procesos metalúrgicos y el transporte de objetos se basa en el análisis de la procedencia de los metales a partir de la composición isotópica del Pb. El presente estudio incluye 98 nuevos análisis de isótopos de Pb de mineralizaciones de Cu, en muchos casos con evidencias arqueológicas de explotación por las primeras sociedades metalúrgicas. Los resultados que se presentan constituyen un complemento significativo a los existentes en las bases de datos publicadas y permiten una mejor identificación de las fuentes potenciales de materias primas para el suminstro de minerales utilizados en los procesos metalúrgicos. El estudio también evidencia incertidumbres debidas al solapamiento de la signatura isotópica de Pb en menas de Cu procedentes de diferentes contextos geológicos así como la presencia de Pb radiogénico en algunas muestras.

Es descriu un nou mírid del gènere Strongylocoris (Miridae: Orthotylinae: Halticini) amb un únic mascle d’Algesires (província de Cadis), Andalusia (Espanya), sud de la península Ibèrica. Es tracta de Strongylocoris ferreri n. sp., que se separa de la resta d’espècies del gènere per la morfologia externa i per la forma del paràmer esquerre., A new plant bug species of the genus Strongylocoris (Miridae: Orthotylinae: Halticini) is described on the basis of a single specimen from Algeciras (province of Cádiz), Andalusia (Spain), southern Iberian Peninsula. Strongylocoris ferreri n. sp. is easily separated from the remaining species of the genus by its external morphology and the shape of the left paramere.

The plant variability in the southern Iberian Peninsula consists of around 3500 different taxa due to its high bioclimatic, geographic, and geological diversity. The deciduous forests in the southern Iberian Peninsula are located in regions with topographies and specific bioclimatic conditions that allow for the survival of taxa that are typical of cooler and wetter bioclimatic regions and therefore represent the relict evidence of colder and more humid paleoclimatic conditions. The floristic composition of 421 samples of deciduous forests in the south-central part of the Iberian Peninsula were analyzed. The ecological importance index (IVI) was calculated, where the most important tree species were Quercus pyrenaica, Acer opalus subsp. Granatensis, and Corylus avellana. These species are uncommon in the south-central part of the Iberian Peninsula, forming forests of little extension. An analysis of the vertical distribution of the species (stratum) shows that the majority of the species of stratum 3 (hemicriptophics, camephytes, geophites, and nanophanerophytes) are characteristic of deciduous forests, and their presence is positively correlated with high values of bioclimatic variables related to humidity and presence of water in the soil (nemoral environments), while they are negatively correlated with high values of bioclimatic variables related to high temperatures, evapotranspiration, and aridity. This work demonstrates that several characteristic deciduous forest taxa are more vulnerable to disappearance due to the loss of their nemoral conditions caused by gaps in the tree or shrub canopy. These gaps lead to an increase in evapotranspiration, excess insolation, and a consequent loss of water and humidity in the microclimatic conditions.

In Western Europe, the Upper Paleolithic is marked by clear regional and diachronic technological differences. Some of these are most likely related with human adaptations to the Late Pleistocene environmental shifts. In this paper we focus on the rapid climatic change events and their influence on the Iberian regional ecology and vegetation cover. Based on those changes and their impact on the main Upper Paleolithic cultural phases in central and southern Portugal, we propose an explanatory model, to be tested in the future, where rapid climatic events, such as the D-O and Heinrich Events, have direct impact on the ecology and vegetation cover and this, in turn, cause changes in human adaptations in terms of mobility, settlement patterns, land use and technology. Studies conducted along the southern Iberian coastline validate macrobenthic community analyses at taxonomic levels higher than that of species. Twelve studies on littoral benthic communities, carried out by the same research team, were selected spanning both a variety of sampling strategies (spatial, temporal, spatiotemporal) and substrate/habitat types (sediment, rock, algae). In order to establish differences between the results obtained at the taxonomic levels of species, family and order, similarities among stations were calculated using Spearman’s coefficient for ranges. A subset of three studies was selected to investigate possible differences in ‘best-explaining’ environmental variables with taxonomic level. The environmental variables selected at species level were the same as those found at levels of family and order. It is concluded that studies at the different levels of taxonomic resolution (species, family, order) lead to similar results both with regard to relative community distributions and the environmental variables associated with these. The importance of this result for monitoring similar benthic communities is discussed.

Se aportan nuevos datos fitosociológicos sobre los terebintales-cornicabrales béticos, con la propuesta de una nueva asociación (Phillyreo latifoliae-Pistacietum terebinthi ass. nova) que representa a las formaciones de microfanerófitos mediterráneos perennifolios integrados en Quercetalia ilicis pero dominados por algunas especies caducifolias como Pistacia terebinthus. Se define también una nueva subasociación de los quejigares bético-torcalenses (Vinco difformis-Quercetum fagineae aceretosum monspessulani subass. nova) cuyo significado fitocenológico corresponde a un enriquecimiento en especies eurosiberianas y submediterráneas de Quercetalia pubescentis, fundamentalmente debido a un incremento en la altitud y a causa de las condiciones microclimáticas del biotopo en el que se asienta dicha comunidad. Contribution to the noules of the comunities of Pistacia terebinthus and Acer monspessulanum in Southern Iberian Peninsula. New phytosociological data about winter-deciduous pistachio tree forest (Phillyreo latifoliae-Pistacietum terebinthi ass. nova) endemic of the Betica province and Mediterranean region are presented. This new association is formed quantitatively by an evergreen forest; however there might predominate deciduous species such as Pistacia terebinthus. In addition, we propose a new subassociation of maple forest into the Torcalense phytogeographical subsector (Vinco difformis-Quercetum fagineae aceretosum monspessulani subass. nova). This subassociation develops on higher areas with north exposition. These conditions enable eurosiberian and submediterranean species, which belong to the phytosociological order of Quercetalia pubescentis.

The herbarium of University of Málaga (MGC Herbarium) is formed by four biological collections. The vascular plants collection (MGC-Cormof) is the main collection of the herbarium. MGC-Cormof dataset aims to digitize and publish data associated with over 76.000 specimens deposited in the collection, of which 97.2% of the specimens are identified at species level. Since 2011, the University of Malaga’s Central Research Service (SCAI) has been responsible for maintaining the herbariums and the dataset. The collection is growing continuously, with an annual intake of about 1.500 specimens. Nearly 96% of the collection is digitized, by Herbar v3.7.1 software (F. Pando et al. 1996–2011), making over 73.000 specimens accessible through the GBIF network (http://data.gbif.org/datasets/resource/8105/). At present, 247 families and 8.110 taxa, distributed in angiosperms (93.97%), ferns and fern allies (4.89%) and gymnosperms (1.14%), constitute the MGC-Cormof collection. The families and genera best represented in the collection are Compositae, Leguminosae, Gramineae, Labiatae, Caryophyllaceae, Teucrium, Silene, Asplenium, Linaria and Quercus. Most of the specimens are from the Western Mediterranean Region, fundamentally Southern Spain (Andalusia: 82% of specimens) and Northern Morocco (2.17%). Approximately, 63% of the specimens are georeferenced. The identification of the specimens in the collection has been carried out by the plant biology department at the University of Malaga and plus 40% of the specimens has been reviewed by experts. The MGC-Cormof dataset has been revised by DarwinTest v3.2 tool (Ortega-Maqueda and Pando 2008) before being published in GBIF. The data included in this database are important for conservation works, taxonomy, flora, cartography, phenology, palynology, among others.El Herbario de la Universidad de Málaga (Herbario MGC) está constituido por cuatro colecciones biológicas. La colección de plantas vasculares (MGC Cormof) es la colección principal del herbario. La base de datos MGC-Cormof ha sido revisada mediante la herramienta DarwinTest v3.2 (Ortega-Maqueda and Pando 2008) antes de ser publicada en GBIF. Los datos incluidos en esta base de datos son importantes para trabajos de conservación, taxonomía, flora, cartografía, fenología, palinología, entre otros.

A new genus and species of sea anemone, Onubactis rocioi gen. et spec. nov. (Actiniidae) is described from the Atlantic coast of the southern Iberian Peninsula. The main features of Onubactis rocioi are: a smooth to corrugate scapus, a delicate scapulus provided with a ruff of non-adherent papillate outgrowths, absence of acrorhagi, more mesenteries distally than proximally, a weak diffuse sphincter, and presence of numerous spirocysts in the pedal disc. The new genus is discussed in relation to five other genera which are characterized by a distal ruff of columnar outgrowths: Actinostella Duchassaing, 1850; Oulactis Milne-Edwards & Haime, 1851; Saccactis Lager, 1911; Isocradactis Carlgren, 1924; and Isoulactis Carlgren, 1959. Of these, it seems closest to Saccactis.

Las comunidades caracterizadas por Alliaria petiolata en el sur de la Península Ibérica corresponden a la asociación Myrrhoidi nodosae-Alliarietum petiolatae (clase Galio-Urticetea). Dicha asociación presenta su óptimo en la Sierra de Ayllón (Provincia Carpetano-Ibérico-Leonesa), e irradia hacia el suroeste por los sistemas béticos (provincia corológica Bética), cambiando su composición florística y empobreciéndose en esa dirección, siguiendo los distintos sectores fitogeográficos. Estos aspectos son reflejados fielmente por tres subasociaciones y una variante: subass. smyrnietosum perfoliati (subsectores Cazorlense y Alcaracense), subass. nepetosum granatensis (sectores Nevadense y Almijaro-Granatense) y subass. ranunculetosum blepharicarpi comb. nova (subsector Torcalense), que llega de modo finícola como variante supramediterránea con Sysimbrium crassifolium al extremo suroeste de las cordilleras (sector Rondeño). Esta distribución manifiesta una vía migratoria para taxones y sintaxones orófilos y mesófilos por las montañas béticas. Además, Alliaria petiolata, por su propia autoecología, su cortejo florístico y el hábitat que precisa, es un fiel bioindicador de bosques caducifolios, riparios y de abetos, que se pueden considerar hoy día muy singulares por su carácter relicto, submediterráneo o por habitar condiciones ecológicas especiales. Plant communities characterized by Alliaria petiolata in the south of de Iberian Peninsula can be included in Myrrhoidi nodosae-Alliarietum petiolatae association (Galio-Urticetea class). This association is located in Ayllon mountains (Carpetano-Ibérico-Leonesa province) and distributed towards the southwest by the Betic mountain ranges (Betic chorological province) varying its floristic composition as the association reaches the different phytogeographical sectors. These aspects are clearly defined by three subassociations and one variant: subass. smyrnietosum perfoliati (Cazorlense and Alcaracense subsectors), subass. nepetosum granatensis (Nevadense y and Almijaro-Granatense sectors) and subass. ranunculetosum blepharicarpi comb. nova (Torcalense subsector) that reaches the southwest limit of Betic ranges as a supramediterranean variant with Sisymbrium crassifolium (Rondeño sector). This distribution may indicate a migratory route for orophyllous and mesophyllous taxa and syntaxa throughout the Betic Mountains. Moreover, Alliaria petiolata is an accurate bioindicator for the undergrowth of deciduous, riparian and mixed Abies pinsapo forests considered actually remarkable because of its relict character, sub-Mediterranean phytogeographical position, or special ecological requirements.

Se presentan aquí argumentos para la consideración de los fosos presentes en muchos poblados de la Prehistoria Reciente del sur de la Península Ibérica como partes de lasfortificaciones. Además se señala la relación del rechazo de este carácter defensivo con condicionantes históricos actuales y paradigmas dominantes. This paper aims to offer a critical approach to interpretations of ditches located at southern Iberian Peninsula Late Prehistory sites as drainage and irrigation infrastructures or as expressions, sometimes symbolic ones, of population aggregation processes. On the contrary the lines of evidence presented against this hypothesis (course, depth, associations, delimited area, local and general chronological context), can connect them to other boundary systems which were sometimes contemporary. These features let us to define these ditch systems as defensive-dissuasive ones developed with full sedentism and consolidation of conflict among communities and raised with the first permanent social differences. El objetivo del presente estudio es el conocimiento de la composición florística de los medios húmedos salinos andaluces. Entre 2003 y 2008 se han inventariado un total de 162 especies y subespecies de plantas vasculares que son propias de los medios salinos andaluces, entre las que se encuentran 41 taxones amenazados y/o protegidos y 6 taxones alóctonos. Para cada uno de los taxones se indica el nombre aceptado, sinónimos más usados, familia a la que pertenece, tipo de vegetación en el que suele aparecer, afinidad fitosociológica, ecología, biotipo, termotipo, distribución general y distribución en el área de estudio por unidades fitogeográficas. Finalmente se indica si la especie es invasora en el territorio o si la especie se considera amenazada. Floristic study of the Andalusian saline wetlands (S. Spain). Checklist and floristic analysis of the halophytic vascular flora. The aim of this study is to contribute to the knowledge of the floristic composition of Andalusian saline wetlands. A total of 162 halophytic vascular plant species and subspecies has been recorded between 2003 and 2008, comprising 41 threatened and/or protected taxa and 6 allochthonous species. For each taxon the accepted name, most usual synonyms, botanic family, vegetation type where it usually appears, phytosociologic affinity, ecology, biotype, termotype, general distribution and phytogeographic distribution in the study area is provided. En este trabajo presentamos los resultados obtenidos en la actividad arqueológica realizada en la Sima de Abraham (Zagrilla Alta, Priego de Córdoba). Esta cavidad representa un nuevo yacimiento de vertebrados fósiles, en el cual se ha actuado tan sólo sobre agrupaciones óseas superficiales que corrían riesgo de pérdida ante agentes humanos, gravitacionales y erosivos. De dichas agrupaciones, tan sólo la denominada como Grupo A responde a un depósito estratificado adscrito al Pleistoceno Superior Final, siendo los restantes grupos B, C y D más problemáticos respecto a cronología. En total, y al igual que en las asociaciones estratificadas, el ciervo y el oso corresponden con la principal asociación de grandes mamíferos documentada In this work we expose the results obtained from the archaeological activity developed in the Sima de Abraham (Zagrilla Alta, Priego de Córdoba). This cavity represents a new site of vertebrate fossils from the Upper Pleistocene. The archaeological activity has focused only on surface bone associations, due to their exposure to damages such as the human activity, erosion and gravitational agents. Of these bone associations, only the so-called Group A responds to a stratified deposit of Late Upper Pleistocene, unlike the other groups B, C and D which are more problematic with respect to chronology.
