Thermal transport in nanostructures plays a critical role in modern technologies. As devices shrink, techniques that can measure thermal properties at nanometer and nanosecond scales are increasingly needed to capture transient, out-of-equilibrium phenomena. We present a novel pump-probe photon-electron method within a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) to map temperature dynamics with unprecedented spatial and temporal resolutions. By combining focused laser-induced heating and synchronized time-resolved monochromated electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), we track phonon, exciton and plasmon signals in various materials, including silicon nitride, aluminum thin film, and transition metal dichalcogenides. Our results demonstrate the technique's ability to follow temperature changes at the nanometer and nanosecond scales. The experimental data closely matched theoretical heat diffusion models, confirming the method's validity. This approach opens new opportunities to investigate transient thermal phenomena in nanoscale materials, offering valuable insights for applications in thermoelectric devices and nanoelectronics.

Control over the optical properties of atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) layers, including those of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), is needed for future optoelectronic applications. Remarkable advances have been achieved through alloying, chemical and electrical doping, and applied strain. However, the integration of TMDs with other 2D materials in van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) to tailor novel functionalities remains largely unexplored. Here, the near-field coupling between TMDs and graphene/graphite is used to engineer the exciton lineshape and charge state. Fano-like asymmetric spectral features are produced in WS$_{2}$, MoSe$_{2}$ and WSe$_{2}$ vdWHs combined with graphene, graphite, or jointly with hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) as supporting or encapsulating layers. Furthermore, trion emission is suppressed in h-BN encapsulated WSe$_{2}$/graphene with a neutral exciton redshift (44 meV) and binding energy reduction (30 meV). The response of these systems to electron-beam and light probes is well-described in terms of 2D optical conductivities of the involved materials. Beyond fundamental insights into the interaction of TMD excitons with structured environments, this study opens an unexplored avenue toward shaping the spectral profile of narrow optical modes for application in nanophotonic devices.

Direct electron detection is currently revolutionizing many fields of electron microscopy due to its lower noise, its reduced point-spread function, and its increased quantum efficiency. More specifically to this work, Timepix3 is a hybrid-pixel direct electron detector capable of outputting temporal information of individual hits in its pixel array. Its architecture results in a data-driven detector, also called event-based, in which individual hits trigger the data off the chip for readout as fast as possible. The presence of a pixel threshold value results in an almost readout-noise-free detector while also defining the hit time of arrival and the time the signal stays over the pixel threshold. In this work, we have performed various experiments to calibrate and correct the Timepix3 temporal information, specifically in the context of electron microscopy. These include the energy calibration, and the time-walk and pixel delay corrections, reaching an average temporal resolution throughout the entire pixel matrix of $1.37 \pm 0.04$ ns. Additionally, we have also studied cosmic rays tracks to characterize the charge dynamics along the volume of the sensor layer, allowing us to estimate the limits of the detector's temporal response depending on different bias voltages, sensor thickness, and the electron beam ionization volume. We have estimated the uncertainty due to the ionization volume ranging from about 0.8 ns for 60 keV electrons to 8.8 ns for 300 keV electrons.

The synergy between free electrons and light has recently been leveraged to reach an impressive degree of simultaneous spatial and spectral resolution, enabling applications in microscopy and quantum optics. However, the required combination of electron optics and light injection into the spectrally narrow modes of arbitrary specimens remains a challenge. Here, we demonstrate microelectronvolt spectral resolution in the nanoscale mapping of photonic modes with quality factors as high as 10$^4$. We rely on mode-matching of a tightly focused laser beam to whispering gallery modes to achieve a 10$^8$-fold increase in light-electron coupling efficiency. By adapting the shape and size of free-space optical beams to address specific physical questions, our approach allows us to interrogate any type of photonic structure with unprecedented spectral and spatial detail

Following the lifespan of optical excitations from their creation to decay into photons is crucial in understanding materials optical properties. Macroscopically, techniques such as the photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy provide unique information on the photophysics of materials with applications as diverse as quantum optics or photovoltaics. Materials excitation and emission pathways are affected by nanometer scale variations directly impacting devices performances. However, they cannot be directly accessed, despite techniques, such as optical spectroscopies with free electrons, having the relevant spatial, spectral or time resolution. Here, we explore optical excitation creation and decay in two representative optical devices: plasmonic nanoparticles and luminescent 2D layers. The analysis of the energy lost by an exciting electron that is coincident in time with a visible-UV photon unveils the decay pathways from excitation towards light emission. This is demonstrated for phase-locked interactions, such as in localized surface plasmons, and non-phase-locked ones, such as the light emission by individual point defects. This newly developed cathodoluminescence excitation spectroscopy images energy transfer pathways at the nanometer scale. It widens the toolset available to explore nanoscale materials.

Whispering-gallery mode resonators host multiple trapped narrowband circulating optical resonances that find applications in quantum electrodynamics, optomechanics, and sensing. However, the spherical symmetry and low field leakage of dielectric microspheres make it difficult to probe their high-quality optical modes using far-field radiation. Even so, local field enhancement from metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) coupled to the resonators can interface the optical far-field and the bounded cavity modes. In this work, we study the interaction between whispering-gallery modes and MNP surface plasmons with nanometric spatial resolution by using electron-beam spectroscopies in a scanning transmission electron microscope. We show that gallery modes are induced over a selective spectral range of the nanoparticle plasmons, and additionally, their polarization can be controlled by the induced dipole moment of the MNP. Our study demonstrates a viable mechanism to effectively excite high-quality-factor whispering-gallery modes and holds potential for applications in optical sensing and light manipulation., Comment: 37 pages, 13 figures

The acquisition of a hyperspectral image is nowadays a standard technique used in the scanning transmission electron microscope. It relates the spatial position of the electron probe to the spectral data associated with it. In the case of electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), frame-based hyperspectral acquisition is much slower than the achievable rastering time of the scan unit (SU), which sometimes leads to undesirable effects in the sample, such as electron irradiation damage, that goes unperceived during frame acquisition. In this work, we have developed an event-based hyperspectral EELS by using a Timepix3 application-specific integrated circuit detector with two supplementary time-to-digital (TDC) lines embedded. In such a system, electron events are characterized by their positional and temporal coordinates, but TDC events only by temporal ones. By sending reference signals from the SU to the TDC line, it is possible to reconstruct the entire spectral image with SU-limited scanning pixel dwell time and thus acquire, with no additional cost, a hyperspectral image at the same rate as that of a single channel detector, such as annular dark-field. To exemplify the possibilities behind event-based hyperspectral EELS, we have studied the decomposition of calcite (CaCO$_3$) into calcium oxide (CaO) and carbon dioxide (CO$_2$) under the electron beam irradiation.

An optical antenna can convert a propagative optical radiation into a localized excitation, and reciprocally. Although optical antennas can be readily created using resonant nanoparticles (metallic or dielectric) as elementary building blocks, the realization of antennas sustaining multiple resonances over a broad range of frequencies remains a challenging task. Here, we use aluminum self-similar, fractal-like structures as broadband optical antennas. Using electron energy loss spectroscopy, we experimentally evidence that a single aluminum Cayley tree, a simple self-similar structure, sustains multiple plasmonic resonances. The spectral position of these resonances is scalable over a broad spectral range spanning two decades, from ultraviolet to mid-infrared. Such multi-resonant structures are highly desirable for applications ranging from non-linear optics to light harvesting and photodetection, as well as surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy., Comment: Authors' version of the published paper. Structural, electronic, and chemical nanoscale modifications of transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers alter their optical properties, including the generation of single photon emitters. A key missing element for complete control is a direct spatial correlation of optical response to nanoscale modifications, due to the large gap in spatial resolution between optical spectroscopy and nanometer resolved techniques, such as transmission electron microscopy or scanning tunneling microscopy. Here, we bridge this gap by obtaining nanometer resolved optical properties using electron spectroscopy, specifically electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) for absorption and cathodoluminescence (CL) for emission, which were directly correlated to chemical and structural information. In an h-BN/WS$_2$/h-BN heterostructure, we observe local modulation of the trion (X$^{-}$) emission due to tens of nanometer wide dielectric patches, while the exciton, X$_A$, does not follow the same modulation. Trion emission also increases in regions where charge accumulation occurs, close to the carbon film supporting the heterostructures. Finally, localized exciton emission (L) detection is not correlated to strain variations above 1 $\%$, suggesting point defects might be involved in their formations.

Silver is considered to be the king among plasmonic materials because it features low inelastic absorption in the visible and infrared (vis-IR) spectral regions compared to other metals. In contrast, copper is commonly regarded as being too lossy for plasmonic applications. Here, we experimentally demonstrate vis-IR plasmons in long copper nanowires (NWs) with quality factors that exceed a value of 60, as determined by spatially resolved, high-resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) measurements. We explain this counterintuitive result by the fact that plasmons in these metal wires have most of their electromagnetic energy outside the metal, and thus, they are less sensitive to inelastic losses in the material. We present an extensive set of data acquired on long silver and copper NWs of varying diameters supporting this conclusion and further allowing us to understand the relative roles played by radiative and nonradiative losses in plasmons that span a wide range of energies down to $<20\,$meV. At such small plasmon energies, thermal population of these modes becomes significant enough to enable the observation of electron energy gains associated with plasmon absorption events. While phonons and their related properties have been studied comprehensively in bulk materials, a thorough understanding of surface phonons for nanoscale objects remains elusive. Infra-red imaging methods with photons or electrons exist, which can map these vibrational excitations down to the individual atom scale. However, no technique so far was able to directly reveal the complete three-dimensional vectorial picture of the phononic electromagnetic density of states from a nanostructured object. Using a highly monochromated electron beam in a scanning transmission electron microscope, we could visualize varying phonon signatures from nanoscale MgO cubes both as a function of the beam position, energy-loss and tilt angle. The vibrational responses were described in terms of well-defined eigenmodes and were used to tomographically reconstruct the phononic surface fields of the object, disclosing effects invisible by conventional mapping. Surface phonon applications rely critically on the way the electromagnetic field is spatially and vectorially shaped, strongly influencing the optical, thermal and electronic behavior of the materials. Such 3D information therefore promises novel insights in nanoscale physical phenomena and is invaluable to the design and optimization of nanostructures for fascinating new uses.

The first colours photographs were created by a process introduced by Edmond Becquerel in 1848. The nature of these photochromatic images colours motivated a debate between scientists during the 19th century, which is still not settled. We present the results of chemical analysis (EDX, HAXPES and EXAFS) and morphology studies (SEM, STEM) aiming at explaining the optical properties of the photochromatic images (UV-visible spectroscopy and low loss EELS). We rule out the two hypotheses (pigment and interferences) that have prevailed since 1848, respectively based on variations in the oxidation degree of the compound forming the sensitized layer and periodically spaced photolytic silver planes. A study of the silver nanoparticles dispersions contained in the coloured layers showed specific localizations and size distributions of the nanoparticles for each colour. These results allow us to formulate a plasmonic hypothesis on the origin of the photochromatic images colours.

Bismuth iron garnet (BIG), i.e. Bi3Fe5O12, is a strong ferrimagnet that also possess outstanding magneto-optical properties such as the largest known Faraday rotation. These properties are related with the distribution of magnetic moments on octahedral and tetrahedral sites, the presence of spin gaps in the density of state and a strong spin-orbit coupling. In this work, first-principles ab initio calculations are performed to study the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of BIG using Density Functional Theory with Hubbard+U (DFT+U) correction including spin-orbit coupling and HSE06 hybrid functional. We found that the presence of spin gaps in the electronic structure results from the interplay between exchange and correlation effects and the crystal field strengths for tetrahedral and octahedral iron sublattices. The DFT+U treatment tends to close the spin-gaps for larger U due to over-localization effects, notably in the octahedral site. On the other hand, the hybrid functional confirms the occurrences of three spin gaps in the iron states of the conduction band as expected from optical measurements. A strong exchange splitting at the top of the valence bands associated with a lone-pair type mixture of O p and Bi s,p states is also obtained. Similar exchange splitting was not previously observed for other iron based garnets, such as for yttrium iron garnet. It follows that hole doping, as obtained by Ca substitution at Bi sites, results in a full spin polarized density at the Fermi energy. This work helps to shed more light on the theoretical comprehension of the properties of BIG and opens the route towards the use of advanced Many Body calculations to predict the magneto-optical coupling effects in BIG in a direct comparison with the experimental measurements.

The evolution of the scanning modules for scanning transmission electron microscopes (STEM) has realized the possibility to generate arbitrary scan pathways, an approach currently explored to improve acquisition speed and to reduce electron dose effects. In this work, we present the implementation of a random scan operating mode in STEM achieved at the hardware level via a custom scan control module. A pre-defined pattern with fully shuffled raster order is used to sample the entire region of interest. Subsampled random sparse images can then be extracted at successive time frames, to which suitable image reconstruction techniques can be applied. With respect to the conventional raster scan mode, this method permits to limit dose accumulation effects, but also to decouple the spatial and temporal information in hyperspectral images. We provide some proofs of concept of the flexibility of the random scan operating mode, presenting examples of its applications in different spectro-microscopy contexts: atomically-resolved elemental maps with electron energy loss spectroscopy and nanoscale-cathodoluminescence spectrum images. By employing adapted post-processing tools, it is demonstrated that the method allows to precisely track and correct for sample instabilities and to follow spectral diffusion with a high spatial localization.

Plasmonic crystals are well known to have band structure including a bandgap, enabling the control of surface plasmon propagation and confinement. The band dispersion relation of bulk crystals has been generally measured by momentum-resolved spectroscopy using far field optical techniques while the defects introduced in the crystals have separately been investigated by near field imaging techniques so far. Particularly, defect related energy levels introduced in the plasmonic band gap have not been observed experimentally. In order to investigate such a localized mode, we performed electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), on a point defect introduced in a plasmonic crystal made up of flat cylinders protruding out of a metal film and arranged on a triangular lattice. The energy level of the defect mode was observed to lie within the full band-gap energy range. This was confirmed by a momentum-resolved EELS measurement of the band gap performed on the same plasmonic crystal. Furthermore, we experimentally and theoretically investigated the emergence of the defect states by starting with a corral of flat cylinders protrusions and adding sequentially additional shells of those in order to eventually forming a plasmonic band-gap crystal encompassing a single point defect. Vibrational optical spectroscopies can be enhanced by surface plasmons to reach molecular-sized limits of detection and characterization. The level of enhancement strongly depends on microscopic details of the sample that are generally missed by macroscopic techniques. Here we investigate phonons in h-BN by coupling them to silver-nanowire plasmons, whose energy is tuned by modifying the nanowire length. Specifically, we use electron beam milling to accurately and iteratively change the nanowire length, followed by electron energy-loss spectroscopy to reveal the plasmon-enhanced vibrational features of h-BN. This allows us to investigate otherwise hidden bulk phonons and observe strong plasmon-phonon coupling. The new milling-and-spectroscopy technique holds great potential for resolving vibrational features in material nanostructures.

The possibility to control the magnetic properties of a material with an electric field at room temperature is highly desirable for modern applications. Moreover, a coupling between magnetic and electric orders within a single material presenting a wide range of exceptional physical properties, such as bismuth iron garnet (BIG), may lead to great advances in the field of spintronic applications. In particular, the combination of the magnetoelectric (ME) coupling with the low damping of spin waves in BIG can allow the control and manipulation of spin waves by an electric field in magnonic devices. Here we report the unambiguous observation of linear magnetoelectric coupling above 300 K in BIG using ferromagnetic resonance technique with electric field modulation. The measured coupling value is comparable with that observed for prototypal magnetoelectric Cr2O3. On the basis of our experimental results, the strength of this linear ME coupling is directly linked to the presence of bismuth ions inducing strong spin orbit coupling and to the appearance of local magnetic inhomogeneities related to the magnetic domain structure. The unprecedented combination of magnetic, optical and magnetoelectrical properties in BIG is expected to trigger significant interest for technological applications as well as for theoretical studies.

The type and distribution of oxygen functional groups in graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) remain still a subject of great debate. Local analytic techniques are required to access the chemistry of these materials at a nanometric scale. Electron energy loss spectroscopy in a scanning transmission electron microscope can provide the suitable resolution, but GO and RGO are extremely sensitive to electron irradiation. In this work we employ a dedicated experimental setup to reduce electron illumination below damage limit. GO oxygen maps obtained at a few nanometers scale show separated domains with different oxidation levels. The C/O ratio varies from about 4:1 to 1:1, the latter corresponding to a complete functionalization of the graphene flakes. In RGO the residual oxygen concentrates mostly in regions few tens nanometers wide. Specific energy-loss near-edge structures are observed for different oxidation levels. By combining these findings with first-principles simulations we propose a model for the highly oxidized domains where graphene is fully functionalized by hydroxyl groups forming a 2D-sp$^3$ carbon network analogous to that of graphane.

Having access to the chemical environment at the atomic level of a dopant in a nanostructure is crucial for the understanding of its properties. We have performed atomically-resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopy to detect individual nitrogen dopants in single-walled carbon nanotubes and compared with first principles calculations. We demonstrate that nitrogen doping occurs as single atoms in different bonding configurations: graphitic-like and pyrrolic-like substitutional nitrogen neighbouring local lattice distortion such as Stone-Thrower-Wales defects. The stability under the electron beam of these nanotubes has been studied in two extreme cases of nitrogen incorporation content and configuration. The strong excitonic emission at 5.75 eV of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) makes this material one of the most promising candidate for light emitting devices in the far ultraviolet (UV). However, single excitons occur only in perfect monocrystals that are extremely hard to synthesize, while regular h-BN samples present a complex emission spectrum with several additional peaks. The microscopic origin of these additional emissions has not yet been understood. In this work we address this problem using an experimental and theoretical approach that combines nanometric resolved cathodoluminescence, high resolution transmission electron microscopy and state of the art theoretical spectroscopy methods. We demonstrate that emission spectra are strongly inhomogeneus within individual flakes and that additional excitons occur at structural deformations, such as faceted plane folds, that lead to local changes of the h-BN stacking order.

The local structural distortions in polydomain ferroelectric PbTiO3/SrTiO3 superlattices are investigated by means of high spatial and energy resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy combined with high angle annular dark field imaging. Local structural variations across the interfaces have been identified with unit cell resolution through the analysis of the energy loss near edge structure of the Ti-L2,3 and O-K edges. Ab-initio and multiplet calculations of the Ti-L2,3 edges provide unambiguous evidence for an inhomogeneous polarization profile associated with the observed structural distortions across the superlattice., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We present a density functional theory study on the shape and arrangement of small BN domains embedded into single-walled carbon nanotubes. We show a strong tendency for the BN hexagons formation at the simultaneous inclusion of B and N atoms within the walls of carbon nanotubes. The work emphasizes the importance of a correct description of the BN-C frontier. We suggest that BN-C interface will be formed preferentially with the participation of N-C bonds. Thus, we propose a new way of stabilizing the small BN inclusions through the formation of nitrogen terminated borders. The comparison between the obtained results and the available experimental data on formation of BN plackets within the single walled carbon nanotubes is presented. The mirror situation of inclusion of carbon plackets within single walled BN nanotubes is considered within the proposed formalism. Finally, we show that the inclusion of small BN plackets inside the CNTs strongly affects the electronic character of the initial systems, opening a band gap. The nitrogen excess in the BN plackets introduces donor states in the band gap and it might thus result in a promising way for n-doping single walled carbon nanotubes.
