Energetic spin-polarized positrons are very useful for forefront research such as e^{−}e^{+} collider physics, but it is still quite challenging to generate such sources. Here, we propose an efficient scheme of trapping and accelerating polarized positrons in plasma wakefields. By developing a fully spin-resolved Monte Carlo method, we find that in the nonlinear Breit-Wheeler pair production the polarization of intermediate γ photons significantly affects the pair spin polarization, and ignoring this effect would result in an overestimation of the pair yield and polarization degree. In particular, seed electrons colliding with a bichromatic laser create polarized γ photons which split into e^{−}e^{+} pairs via the nonlinear Breit-Wheeler process with an average (partial) positron polarization above 30% (70%). Over 70% of positrons are then trapped and accelerated in the recovered wakefields driven by a hollow electron beam, obtaining an energy gain of 3.5 GeV/cm with slight depolarization. Our method provides the potential for constructing compact polarized positron sources for future applications and may also attract broad interest in strong-field physics, high-energy physics, and particle physics.

Quantum electrodynamics (QED) is a foundation of modern physics, yet access to the strong-field QED regime in the laboratory remains a formidable challenge. Currently, high-power lasers at the multi-petawatt level and above are generally believed to be an important approach to test QED physics. Here, we present a different approach by use of an electron beam self-pinched to near-solid-density. The beam self-pinching is realized while it transports through a properly designed hollow cone target, where strong azimuthal magnetic fields are generated by the beam-induced plasma return currents at the inner surface of the cone target. In this way, the beam diameter can be reduced by more than an order of magnitude down to submicron and its density is increased by hundreds of times. The produced ultradense electron beams can unlock a new regime of QED-dominated beam–plasma interactions, for example, more than 60% of the beam energy can be converted into GeV gamma-rays with unprecedented brilliance when such a beam passes through a thin solid foil. Moreover, with proper parameter design, this beam-focusing scheme can also be applied to positron beams and thus may find applications in broad areas, such as particle colliders and strong-field physics.

Ultra-intense short-pulse light sources are powerful tools for a wide range of applications. However, relativistic short-pulse lasers are normally generated in the near-infrared regime. Here, we present a promising and efficient way to generate tunable relativistic ultrashort pulses with wavelengths above 20 µm in a density-tailored plasma. In this approach, in the first stage, an intense drive laser first excites a nonlinear wake in an underdense plasma, and its photon frequency is then downshifted via phase modulation as it propagates in the plasma wake. Subsequently, in the second stage, the drive pulse enters a lower-density plasma region so that the wake has a larger plasma cavity in which longer-wavelength infrared pulses can be produced. Numerical simulations show that the resulting near-single-cycle pulses cover a broad spectral range of 10–40 µm with a conversion efficiency of ∼2.1% (∼34 mJ pulse energy). This enables the investigation of nonlinear infrared optics in the relativistic regime and offers new possibilities for the investigation of ultrafast phenomena and physics in strong fields.

High-energy positrons and bright γ-ray sources are of great importance both in fundamental research and for practical applications. However, collimated GeV electron–positron pair jets and γ-ray flashes are still rarely produced in the laboratory. Here, we demonstrate that by irradiating a near-critical-density plasma channel with two 10 PW-scale laser pulses, highly directional GeV electron–positron pairs and bright γ-ray beams can be efficiently generated. Three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations show the formation of GeV positron jets with high density (8×1021/ cm3), attosecond duration (400 as), and a divergence angle of 14°. Additionally, ultrabright [2×1025 photons s−1 mm−2 mrad−2 (0.1% bandwidth)−1] collimated attosecond (370 as) γ-ray flashes with a laser energy conversion efficiency of 5.6% are emitted. These features show the significant advantage of using a plasma channel as compared with a uniform plasma and thus open up new possibilities for a wide variety of applications.

Optical modulators are easily damaged by high-intensity pulses. Here, the authors propose a method for directly modulating high-power laser light across a broad spectral range using a wave generated in a sub-millimetre-scale underdense plasma by a second laser.

Although several laser–plasma-based methods have been proposed for generating energetic electrons, positrons and γ -photons, manipulation of their microstructures is still challenging, and their angular momentum control has not yet been achieved. Here, we present and numerically demonstrate an all-optical scheme to generate bright GeV γ -photon and positron beams with controllable angular momentum by use of two counter-propagating circularly-polarized lasers in a near-critical-density plasma. The plasma acts as a ‘switching medium’, where the trapped electrons first obtain angular momentum from the drive laser pulse and then transfer it to the γ -photons via nonlinear Compton scattering. Further through the multiphoton Breit–Wheeler process, dense energetic positron beams are efficiently generated, whose angular momentum can be well controlled by laser–plasma interactions. This opens up a promising and feasible way to produce ultra-bright GeV γ -photons and positron beams with desirable angular momentum for a wide range of scientific research and applications.

The acceleration of electron beams with multiple transverse structures in wakefields driven by Laguerre-Gaussian pulses has been studied through three-dimensional (3D) particle-in-cell simulations. Under different laser-plasma conditions, the wakefield shows different transverse structures. In general cases, the wakefield shows a donut-like structure and it accelerates the ring-shaped hollow electron beam. When a lower plasma density or a smaller laser spot size is used, besides the donut-like wakefield, a central bell-like wakefield can also be excited. The wake sets in the center of the donut-like wake. In this case, both a central on-axis electron beam and a ring-shaped electron beam are simultaneously accelerated. Further, reducing the plasma density or laser spot size leads to an on-axis electron beam acceleration only. We show that a ring-shaped hollow electron beam can be injected and accelerated by using a Laguerre-Gaussian laser pulse and ionization-induced injection in a laser wakefield accelerator. The acceleration and evolution of such a hollow, relativistic electron beam are investigated through three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. We find that both the ring size and the beam thickness oscillate during the acceleration. The beam azimuthal shape is angularly dependent and evolves during the acceleration. The beam ellipticity changes resulting from the electron angular momenta obtained from the drive laser pulse and the focusing forces from the wakefield. The dependence of beam ring radius on the laser-plasma parameters (e.g., laser intensity, focal size, and plasma density) is studied. The effects of laser bandwidth on stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) instability in underdense plasma are studied by particle-in-cell simulations. In the simulations, sinusoidal frequency modulation of the incident laser pulse is used. By changing the size of bandwidth, it is shown that the linear growth of SRS can be suppressed considerably, provided the laser bandwidth is much larger than the SRS linear growth rate. Simulations also show that by choosing the proper frequency modulation parameters or decreasing the linear growth rate of SRS, the inhibitory effects become more obvious. The plasma electron temperature tends to weaken the bandwidth effects especially when it is over a keV level. Effects of relativistic electron temperature on stimulated Raman scattering and stimulated Brillouin scattering instabilities for high intensity lasers propagating in underdense plasma are studied theoretically and numerically. The dispersion relations for these instabilities are derived from the relativistic fluid equation. For a wide range of laser intensity and electron temperature, it is found that the maximum growth rate and the instability region in k-space can be reduced at relativistic electron temperature. Based on particle-in-cell simulations, ion acceleration by collisionless electrostatic shock waves in the interaction of intense laser pulses with solid targets containing two ion species of different charge-to-mass ratios R is studied. The acceleration processes of the ions with different R and located in different regions of the target have been considered. Simulations also show that ions with larger R can be reflected and accelerated dramatically between two oppositely propagating shocks generated in plasma dominated by ions with smaller R. The studies suggest a new way to generate high energy ions. The involved phenomena may also occur in space and astrophysical plasmas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

By using three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, externally injected electron beam acceleration and radiation in donut-like wake fields driven by a Laguerre–Gaussian pulse are investigated. Studies show that in the acceleration process the total charge and azimuthal momenta of electrons can be stably maintained at a distance of a few hundreds of micrometers. Electrons experience low-frequency spiral rotation and high-frequency betatron oscillation, which leads to a synchrotron-like radiation. The radiation spectrum is mainly determined by the betatron motion of electrons. The far field distribution of radiation intensity shows axial symmetry due to the uniform transverse injection and spiral rotation of electrons. Our studies suggest a new way to simultaneously generate hollow electron beam and radiation source from a compact laser plasma accelerator. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article informs that developments in laser-wakefield accelerators have led to compact ultrashort X/gamma-ray sources that are comparable with conventional synchrotron sources. Topics include scheme to efficiently produce collimated ultrabright Gamma ray beams with photon energies tunable up to GeV with a multi-petawatt laser pulse into wakefield accelerator; and numerical simulations demonstrate that Gamma ray photons/shot are produced with energy conversion efficiency for photons.
