6. Surface plasmon polariton assisted optical pulling force

Abstract

We demonstrate both analytically and numerically the existence of optical pulling forces acting on particles located near plasmonic interfaces. Two main factors contribute to the appearance of this negative reaction force. The interference between the incident and reflected waves induces a rotating dipole with an asymmetric scattering pattern while the directional excitation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) enhances the linear momentum of scattered light. The strongly asymmetric SPP excitation is determined by spin-orbit coupling of the rotating dipole and surface plasmon polariton. As a result of the total momentum conservation, the force acting on the particle points in a direction opposite to the incident wave propagation. We derive analytical expressions for the force acting on a dipolar particles placed in the proximity of plasmonic surfaces. Analytical expressions for this pulling force are derived within the dipole approximation and are in excellent agreement with results of electromagnetic numerical calculations. Abstract

The boundary problem of linear classical optics about the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with a thin dielectric film has been solved under explicit consideration of its discrete structure. The main attention has been paid to the investigation of the near-zone optical response of dielectrics. The laws of reflection and refraction for discrete structures in the case of a regular atomic distribution are studied and the structure of evanescent harmonics induced by an external plane wave near the surface is investigated in details. It is shown by means of analytical and numerical calculations that due to the existence of the evanescent harmonics the laws of reflection and refraction at the distances from the surface less than two interatomic distances are principally different from the Fresnel laws. Abstract

In spite of the interest in nonlinear optical (NLO) properties in glasses, the composite method has been successful only for the b-BaB2O4 polar crystal incorporated in the borosilicate glass matrix. In the present paper, transparent composites based on low melting borate and boron silicate glasses containing PbO or TeO2 and KNbSi2O7 ferroelectric crystal are obtained by a remelting technology. Depending on glass composition, NLO composites are subdivided in two types. The first are composites containing micron or submicron scaled crystals with a high second harmonic generation (SHG) activity, where refractive indexes of crystals and glass matrix are very similar. Such a type of transparent composites is expected to achieve SHG activity in the future comparable with that of single crystals. The second type are ‘nanocomposites’ where initial crystals are dissolved or transformed up to nanoscaled sizes. They are considered to be an analogue of nanostructured glasses exhibiting moderate second order optical nonlinearity.

Abstract

In dense multiple scattering media, optical fields evolve through both homogeneous and evanescent waves. New regimes of light transport emerge because of the near-field coupling between individual scattering centers at mesoscopic scales. We present a novel propagation model that is developed in terms of measurable far- and near-field scattering cross sections. Our quantitative description explains the increase of total transmission in dense scattering media and its accuracy is established through both full-scale numerical calculations and enhanced backscattering experiments.
