Federated Learning (FL) addresses the challenges posed by data silos, which arise from privacy, security regulations, and ownership concerns. Despite these barriers, FL enables these isolated data repositories to participate in collaborative learning without compromising privacy or security. Concurrently, the advancement of blockchain technology and decentralized applications (DApps) within Web 3.0 heralds a new era of transformative possibilities in web development. As such, incorporating FL into Web 3.0 paves the path for overcoming the limitations of data silos through collaborative learning. However, given the transaction speed constraints of core blockchains such as Ethereum (ETH) and the latency in smart contracts, employing one-shot FL, which minimizes client-server interactions in traditional FL to a single exchange, is considered more apt for Web 3.0 environments. This paper presents a practical one-shot FL system for Web 3.0, termed OFL-W3. OFL-W3 capitalizes on blockchain technology by utilizing smart contracts for managing transactions. Meanwhile, OFL-W3 utilizes the Inter-Planetary File System (IPFS) coupled with Flask communication, to facilitate backend server operations to use existing one-shot FL algorithms. Secure container runtimes serve as the foundational layer for creating and running containers, which is the bedrock of emerging computing paradigms like microservices and serverless computing. Although existing secure container runtimes indeed enhance security via running containers over a guest kernel and a Virtual Machine Monitor (VMM or Hypervisor), they incur performance penalties in critical areas such as networking, container startup, and I/O system calls. In our practice of operating microservices and serverless computing, we build a high-performance secure container runtime named Quark. Unlike existing solutions that rely on traditional VM technologies by importing Linux for the guest kernel and QEMU for the VMM, we take a different approach to building Quark from the ground up, paving the way for extreme customization to unlock high performance. Our development centers on co-designing a custom guest kernel and a VMM for secure containers. To this end, we build a lightweight guest OS kernel named QKernel and a specialized VMM named QVisor. The QKernel-QVisor codesign allows us to deliver three key advancements: high-performance RDMA-based container networking, fast container startup mode, and efficient mechanisms for executing I/O syscalls. In our practice with real-world apps like Redis, Quark cuts down P95 latency by 79.3% and increases throughput by 2.43x compared to Kata. Moreover, Quark container startup achieves 96.5% lower latency than the cold-start mode while saving 81.3% memory cost to the keep-warm mode. Emotion recognition plays a crucial role in human-computer interaction, and electroencephalography (EEG) is advantageous for reflecting human emotional states. In this study, we propose MACTN, a hierarchical hybrid model for jointly modeling local and global temporal information. The model is inspired by neuroscience research on the temporal dynamics of emotions. MACTN extracts local emotional features through a convolutional neural network (CNN) and integrates sparse global emotional features through a transformer. Moreover, we employ channel attention mechanisms to identify the most task-relevant channels. Through extensive experimentation on two publicly available datasets, namely THU-EP and DEAP, our proposed method, MACTN, consistently achieves superior classification accuracy and F1 scores compared to other existing methods in most experimental settings. Furthermore, ablation studies have shown that the integration of both self-attention mechanisms and channel attention mechanisms leads to improved classification performance. Finally, an earlier version of this method, which shares the same ideas, won the Emotional BCI Competition's final championship in the 2022 World Robot Contest.

Serverless computing is a popular cloud computing paradigm, which requires low response latency to handle on-demand user requests. There are two prominent techniques employed for reducing the response latency: keep fully initialized containers alive (Warm Container) or reduce the new container startup (cold start) latency. This paper presents the 3rd container startup mode: Hibernate Container, which starts faster than the cold start container mode and consumes less memory than the Warm Container mode. Hibernate Container is essentially a "deflated" Warm Container. Its application memory is swapped out to disk, the freed memory is reclaimed and file based mmap memory is cleaned-up. The Hibernate Container's deflated memory is inflated in response to user requests. As Hibernate Container's application is fully initialized, its response latency is less than the cold start mode; and as the application memory is deflated, its memory consumption is less than the Warm Container mode. Additionally, when a Hibernate Container is "woken up" to process a request, the Woken-up Container has similar response latency to Warm Container but less memory consumption because not all the deflated memory needs to be inflated. We implemented the Hibernate technique as part of the open source Quark secure container runtime project and our test demonstrated that Hibernate Container consumes about 7\% to 25\% of the Warm Container memory. All of this results in a higher deployment density, lower latency and appreciable improvements in the overall system performance.

Cloud-native containerized applications constantly seek high-performance and easy-to-operate container network solutions. RDMA network is a potential enabler with higher throughput and lower latency than the standard TCP/IP network stack. However, several challenges remain in equipping containerized applications with RDMA network: 1) How to deliver transparent improvements without modifying application code; 2) How to integrate RDMA-based network solutions with container orchestration systems; 3) How to efficiently utilize RDMA for container networks. In this paper, we present an RDMA-based container network solution, TCP Socket over RDMA (TSoR), which addresses all the above challenges. To transparently accelerate applications using POSIX socket interfaces without modifications, we integrate TSoR with a container runtime that can intercept system calls for socket interfaces. To be compatible with orchestration systems like Kubernetes, TSoR implements a container network following the Kubernetes network model and satisfies all requirements of the model. To leverage RDMA benefits, TSoR designs a high-performance network stack that efficiently transfers TCP traffic using RDMA network. Thus, TSoR provides a turn-key solution for existing Kubernetes clusters to adopt the high-performance RDMA network with minimal effort. Our evaluation results show that TSoR provides up to 2.3x higher throughput and 64\% lower latency for existing containerized applications, such as Redis key-value store and Node.js web server, with no code changes. Both the Dictionary Learning (DL) and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) are powerful image representation learning systems based on different mechanisms and principles, however whether we can seamlessly integrate them to improve the per-formance is noteworthy exploring. To address this issue, we propose a novel generalized end-to-end representation learning architecture, dubbed Convolutional Dictionary Pair Learning Network (CDPL-Net) in this paper, which integrates the learning schemes of the CNN and dictionary pair learning into a unified framework. Generally, the architecture of CDPL-Net includes two convolutional/pooling layers and two dictionary pair learn-ing (DPL) layers in the representation learning module. Besides, it uses two fully-connected layers as the multi-layer perception layer in the nonlinear classification module. In particular, the DPL layer can jointly formulate the discriminative synthesis and analysis representations driven by minimizing the batch based reconstruction error over the flatted feature maps from the convolution/pooling layer. Moreover, DPL layer uses l1-norm on the analysis dictionary so that sparse representation can be delivered, and the embedding process will also be robust to noise. To speed up the training process of DPL layer, the efficient stochastic gradient descent is used. In this paper, we propose a structured Robust Adaptive Dic-tionary Pair Learning (RA-DPL) framework for the discrim-inative sparse representation learning. To achieve powerful representation ability of the available samples, the setting of RA-DPL seamlessly integrates the robust projective dictionary pair learning, locality-adaptive sparse representations and discriminative coding coefficients learning into a unified learning framework. Specifically, RA-DPL improves existing projective dictionary pair learning in four perspectives. First, it applies a sparse l2,1-norm based metric to encode the recon-struction error to deliver the robust projective dictionary pairs, and the l2,1-norm has the potential to minimize the error. Sec-ond, it imposes the robust l2,1-norm clearly on the analysis dictionary to ensure the sparse property of the coding coeffi-cients rather than using the costly l0/l1-norm. As such, the robustness of the data representation and the efficiency of the learning process are jointly considered to guarantee the effi-cacy of our RA-DPL. Third, RA-DPL conceives a structured reconstruction weight learning paradigm to preserve the local structures of the coding coefficients within each class clearly in an adaptive manner, which encourages to produce the locality preserving representations. Fourth, it also considers improving the discriminating ability of coding coefficients and dictionary by incorporating a discriminating function, which can ensure high intra-class compactness and inter-class separation in the code space. In this paper, we extend the popular dictionary pair learning (DPL) into the scenario of twin-projective latent flexible DPL under a structured twin-incoherence. Technically, a novel framework called Twin-Projective Latent Flexible DPL (TP-DPL) is proposed, which minimizes the twin-incoherence constrained flexibly-relaxed reconstruction error to avoid the possible over-fitting issue and produce accurate reconstruction. In this setting, our TP-DPL integrates the twin-incoherence based latent flexible DPL and the joint embedding of codes as well as salient features by twin-projection into a unified model in an adaptive neighborhood-preserving manner. As a result, TP-DPL unifies the salient feature extraction, representation and classification. The twin-incoherence constraint on codes and features can explicitly ensure high intra-class compactness and inter-class separation over them. TP-DPL also integrates the adaptive weighting to preserve the local neighborhood of the coefficients and salient features within each class explicitly. For efficiency, TP-DPL uses Frobenius-norm and abandons the costly l0/l1-norm for group sparse representation. Another byproduct is that TP-DPL can directly apply the class-specific twin-projective reconstruction residual to compute the label of data.
