12. Mathematical Intelligence and Mathematical Creativity: A Causal Relationship

Abstract

This study investigated the causal relationship between mathematical creativity and mathematical intelligence. Four hundred thirty-nine 8th-grade students, age ranged from 11 to 14 years, were included in the sample of this study by random cluster technique on which mathematical creativity and Hindi adaptation of mathematical intelligence test were administered with 4-month time lag. Cross-lagged panel analysis was used to analyze the data. The uncorrected cross-lagged correlations appeared to show no causal relation between mathematical creativity and mathematical intelligence. But after the correction the difference in the cross-lagged correlations was found to be small and does not give guarantee of unidirectional causal relation between these two constructs. It revealed that there is a mutually reinforcing (symmetric) relationship between mathematical intelligence and mathematical creativity, i.e., mathematical intelligence causes mathematical creativity and vice-versa.

15. Mathematical Creativity and Mathematical Aptitude: A Cross-Lagged Panel Analysis

Abstract

Cross-lagged panel correlation (CLPC) analysis has been used to identify causal relationships between mathematical creativity and mathematical aptitude. For this study, 480 8th standard students were selected through a random cluster technique from 9 intermediate and high schools of Varanasi, India. Mathematical creativity and mathematical aptitude tests were administered twice, 4 months apart. The CLPC analysis uncovered a significant relationship between mathematical creativity and mathematical aptitude. It appears that mathematical creativity was a cause of mathematical aptitude, rather than the converse (i.e., higher mathematical creativity leading to higher mathematical aptitude). Limitations and future directions are outlined.

Abstract

The relationship between mathematical creativity (MC) and mathematical problem-solving performance (MP) has often been studied but the causal relation between these two constructs has yet to be clearly reported. The main purpose of this study was to define the causal relationship between MC and MP. Data from a representative sample of 480 eighth-grade students were analysed using a cross-lagged panel correlation (CLPC) design. CLPC attempts to rule out plausible alternative explanation of a causal effect. The result suggests that significant predominant causal relationship was found between MC and MP. It indicates that MP was found to be a cause of MC than the converse.

Abstract

Factors that underlie the clustering of metabolic syndrome traits are not fully known. We performed whole-exome sequence analysis in kindreds with extreme phenotypes of early-onset atherosclerosis and metabolic syndrome, and identified novel loss-of-function mutations in the gene encoding the pancreatic elastase chymotrypsin-like elastase family member 2A (CELA2A). We further show that CELA2A is a circulating enzyme that reduces platelet hyperactivation, triggers both insulin secretion and degradation, and increases insulin sensitivity. CELA2A plasma levels rise postprandially and parallel insulin levels in humans. Loss of these functions by the mutant proteins provides insight into disease mechanisms and suggests that CELA2A could be an attractive therapeutic target. Exome sequencing identifies loss-of-function CELA2Amutations in families with early-onset atherosclerosis and metabolic syndrome. Functional studies show that CELA2A is a circulating enzyme that reduces platelet activation, triggers insulin secretion and degradation, and increases insulin sensitivity.

Abstract

Objectives: Genes related to endothelial function are responsible for the regulation of vascular functions. Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate whether endothelial gene-associated polymorphism and their plasma levels can be used to predict the risk for venous thromboembolism (VTE). Methods: We studied 133 patients with VTE and 164 healthy controls. Endothelin (EDN) G8002A, EDN T1370G, EDN 3A/4A, eNOSG894T, angiotensin-converting enzyme I/D, vascular endothelial growth factor C936T, and endothelial cell protein C receptor A6936G polymorphism was genotyped by restriction fragment length polymorphism. Plasma levels of endothelin 1 (EDN1), endothelial nitric oxide synthase, and angiotensin-converting enzyme were measured by enzyme-linked immunoassay kit. Results: The genotype and allele frequency between control and patients with VTE were significantly altered only for EDN T1370G polymorphism. The plasma EDN1 concentration was relatively higher in patients with VTE (P = .0017) compared to healthy controls and showed an association with the EDN1 gene polymorphism in male Indian population. Logistic regression model analysis for EDN T1370G indicated a significant association between EDN G allele and occurrence of VTE. Abstract

Current understanding of tumor immunosuppressive mechanisms forms the basis for modern day immunotherapies. Immunoregulatory role of platelets in cancer remains largely elusive. Platelets from non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients revealed a distinct activation phenotype. TREM-like transcript 1 (TLT-1), a platelet protein, was increased along with enhanced extracellular release from NSCLC platelets. The increased platelet TLT-1 was also evident in humanized mice with patient-derived tumors. In immunocompetent mice with syngeneic tumors, TLT-1 binding to T cells, in vivo, led to suppression of CD8 T cells, promoting tumor growth. We identified direct interaction between TLT-1 and CD3ε on T cells, implicating the NF-κB pathway in CD8 T cell suppression. Anti–TLT-1 antibody rescued patients’ T cells from platelet-induced suppression ex vivo and reduced tumors in mice in vivo. Clinically, higher TLT-1 correlated with reduced survival of NSCLC patients. Our findings thus identify TLT-1 as a platelet-derived immunosuppressor that suppresses CD8 T cells and demonstrate its therapeutic and prognostic significance in cancer.

Abstract

A series of Cr doped Mn-Zn ferrites with compositional formula Mn0.5Zn0.5-xCrxFe2O4 (x = 0, 0.3, 0.5) were prepared by solid-state reaction route. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis reveals that the samples prepared are polycrystalline cubic spinel in structure (Fd3m) with some secondary phase of α-Fe2O3. Slight variation in the lattice parameter of Cr doped Mn0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 has been observed due to difference in ionic radii of cations. Small shift in Raman modes towards higher wave number has been observed. Further the line width decreases with the doping ions. A giant dielectric constant ~104 is observed for parent Mn0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 which is found to decrease with increase in Cr2+ doping. Low dielectric loss is observed for Mn0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 and improves with Cr2+ doping at Zn2+ site. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Cross-lagged panel analysis is found in the main stream of social, behavioral, medical, business and educational research. It is a form of quasi-experimental design used to determine whether the relationship between two variables is spurious i.e., due to a third variable and not due to causation. Cross-lagged panel analysis is a process used to determine which variable is the cause and which variable is the effect. It is an exploratory method of collecting information at two points in time i.e., time 1 and time 2, to clarify the causal relations between uncontrolled variables which could be tested more rigorously in an experimental setting. The Cross-lagged Panel Correlation (CLPC) is a low power test but better adapted than either multiple regression or factor analysis for answering many questions in longitudinal studies. It captures the dynamic relationship among the variables and allows the model to be controlled over time. This paper focuses on the 2w2v (two wave & two variable) design to describe a research method which can be used to explore the causal predominance relationship in the absence of a true experimental design, but only in a passive manner.
