Introduction/Objective. Active treatment options for localized prostate cancer (LPCa) include surgery and radiotherapy with androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) in selected cases, but all options have side effects, mainly addressed to urinary, sexual, and bowel function. Our study aimed to assess and compare patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) after open retropubic radical prostatectomy (ORRP) or external beam radiotherapy (EBRT). Methods. Between June 2019 and May 2021, a total of 120 patients, with LPCa had undergone active treatment, as follow: ORRP – 60 patients and EBRT – 60 patients. A validated questionnaire, the Expanded Prostate Cancer Index Composite Short Form (EPIC-26) instrument was used to assess PROM, through the following domains: urinary, sexual and bowel. Patients completed a questionnaire at baseline and six, 12, and 24 months after primary treatment. Results. All urinary scores had statistically significant interaction between time and group. After six, 12, and 24 months, all urinary scores were statistically significantly lower in the ORRP group. After 12 and 24 months, bowel score values were statistically significantly lower in patients in the ERBT group. Sexual scores change statistically significant during the follow-up period, without difference between the groups (p < 0.05). Conclusion. Both ORRP and EBRT are associated with decline of sexual scores. ORRP showed significant variations in all urinary scores, with more pronounced negative impact on urinary symptoms compared to EBRT during the entire follow-up period. Bowel scores are lower in EBRT.

The term “aristolochic acid nephropathy” (AAN) is used to include any form of toxic interstitial nephropathy that is caused either by ingestion of plants containing aristolochic acids (AA) or by the environmental contaminants in food such as in Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN). Aristolochic acid (AA) intoxication is strongly associated with the development of upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC); however, the underlying molecular mechanism remains to be defined. MicroRNAs (miRNA) regulate several biological processes, including cell proliferation, differentiation, and metabolism, acting as oncogenes or tumor suppressors. A unique miRNA expression profile suggested that miRNAs could function as regulators in UTUC developmental processes.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most frequent forms of malignant tumors in the human population. The literature data about the role of arginine metabolism in CRC point out its double-faced role. In three tissue specimens of 50 patients who underwent surgical resection for colon adenocarcinoma (tumor, adjacent and healthy tissues more than 10 cm from the tumor border – at the incision margin) taken during surgery, polyamines and the concentration of NO2+NO3 and arginase activity were determined. Polyamine levels and arginase activity were significantly increased in cancer and adjacent tissue specimens compared to healthy ones, while the level of NO2+NO3 was significantly lower in cancer compared to both adjacent and healthy tissues. The high polyamine content in the adjacent colonic mucosa indicates a high proliferative potential of tumor-adjacent tissue. Although we found individual correlations indicating the possible prognostic value of arginase, the performed statistical analysis did not show a predictive significance of arginase activity in the examined tissue specimens for five-year survival of the patients. Nevertheless, the obtained results provide the rationale for further studies of arginine metabolism in tissue specimens after surgery in patients with CRC, which could be useful in the evaluation of the risk for tumor growth, recurrence, metastases and survival after surgical intervention.

Introduction/Objective. This 10-year prospective study’s primary objective was to evaluate the incidence of complications of radical retropubic prostatectomy (RRP). The secondary objective was to analyze how RRP affects lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and quality of life (QoL) by using the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS). Methods. We analyzed 254 patients who underwent RRP in the period 2009–2018. All complications were graded according to the Clavien–Dindo classification. To assess urinary symptoms and the QoL, all the examinees filled out the IPSS and the International Prostate Symptom Score for QoL (IPSS QoL) questionnaires during preoperative preparation and three, six, and 12 months after surgery. Results. The incidence of complications Clavien–Dindo grade ≤ II and grade ≥ III were 26.4% and 16.5%, respectively. The mean overall IPSS for the entire group of patients after 12 months of follow-up was significantly different from the preoperative baseline value (p < 0.001). Patients with preoperative moderate (IPSS 8–19) and severe urinary symptoms (IPSS 20+) had a statistically significant reduction of urinary symptoms after RRP (p < 0.001). After 12 months, IPSS QoL was statistically significantly lower than the preoperative one (p < 0.05). Conclusion. For patients with clinically localized prostate cancer, RRP is a safe and effective treatment option. It is associated with a higher rate of complications from the Clavien–Dindo grade ≤ II group. RRP has clinically beneficial effects on LUTS in patients with moderate and severe urinary symptoms and the QoL related to LUTS.

Introduction. Simultaneous ipsilateral coexistence of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) rarely occurs. Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN) is a chronic degenerative tubulointerstitial renal disease, strongly associated with UTUC. Case outline. А 60-year-old man from the region of BEN was referred to our clinic due to right flank pain, fever, and purulent discharge from the cutaneous fistulous opening in the right lumbar area. Multislice computed tomography urography scan showed right-side pyonephrosis and nephrocutaneous fistulous tract between the kidney and the skin in the right lumbar region. Cystoscopy detected a papillary tumor protruding from the right ureteric orifice. Right-side nephroureterectomy with bladder cuff excision was performed. Histopathological examination revealed rhabdoid RCC of the kidney and multifocal urothelial carcinoma of the ureter. Conclusion. Our case report and literature review indicate that due to rising incidence of multiple primary malignant neoplasms (MPMNs), when treating patients with RCC or UTUC, and especially those from the region of BEN, one should keep in mind the likelihood of synchronous or metachronous occurrence of these tumors.

Background/Aim. In recent years, many studies have demonstrated a proximal shift in the distribution of adenomas and colorectal cancers. The aim of this study was to investigate whether there are differences in the incidence and anatomical distribution of adenomas and colorectal cancers spanning a 20 year time gap. Methods. We performed a retrospective observational study of colorectal adenomas and cancers diagnosed during total colonoscopy in a high volume tertiary care facility in two 1-year periods of time – 1990 and 2010. Results. During the analyzed period, 4,048 colonoscopies were performed, 1,148 were performed in 1990 and 2,900 were done in 2010. The study included 466 patients with adenomas and 121 patients with colorectal cancers. Frequency of proximal adenoma changed from 16.5% to 32.7% (p < 0.001). By analyzing colonoscopies in 2010, an increase in the incidence of adenomas compared to 1990 was noticed. The number of adenomas sized 0–5 mm rose from 32.8% to 56.9% (p < 0.001). Frequency of colon carcinoma changed from 5.3% to 2.0% (p < 0.001). Incidence of cancers in the proximal colon rose from 21.3% to 48.4% (p = 0.002). A higher incidence of cancers in the proximal colon and a lower incidence of distal cancers were observed, while no difference was observed in the incidence of rectal cancers. Conclusion. Presence of proximal colon adenoma and cancer is higher, while the overall incidence of colon cancer is lower. This finding should be taken into account when planning the screening for colorectal cancer.

Background: Episodic fever syndromes are commonly seen in pediatric practice. Episodic fever of unknown origin (FUO) lasts for a few days or weeks and is followed by a fever-free period with a sense of well-being. In this condition, activated neutrophils and monocytes intensively generate reactive oxidative species that may further damage various molecules. The aim of the study was to evaluate oxidative stress biomarkers, lipid peroxidation in erythrocytes and plasma, and advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP) in children with episodic FUO. Methods: The study enrolled 25 children with episodic FUO in afebrile phase and 25 healthy children as controls. Lipid peroxidation was evaluated by measuring malondialdehyde (MDA) production with the thiobarbituric-acid-reactive substances (TBARS) assay in erythrocytes and plasma. Oxidative modification of proteins was measured spectrophotometrically by the determination of AOPP in plasma. Results: Mean duration of episodic fevers was 3.96±2.8 years. Erythrocyte MDA levels were higher in children with FUO than in controls (86.26±10.75 vs. 78.0±3.21 nmol/g hemoglobin), although not significantly (p=0.202). The MDA plasma concentrations were similar (2.42±0.35 vs. 2.41±0.39 μmol/L) between the groups (p= 0.732). Unexpectedly, levels of AOPP were significantly lower in children with FUO than in healthy controls (18.8±5.04 vs. 25.1±3.35 μmol/L, p=0.047). Conclusions: Episodic fevers of unknown origin with an average duration of 3.96±2.8 years do not cause significant oxidative modifications of lipids and proteins in children.

Introduction. Stress urinary incontinence is an involuntary leakage of urine on a sudden increase of intra-abdominal pressure by physical activity, exercise, coughing, sneezing or laughing. Objective. To assess symptoms, functional and anatomical status of voiding function, complications and short term success of a novel procedure, tension-free vaginal tape obturator technique (TVT-O) in the treatment of stress urinary incontinence. Methods. A prospective study was performed on 40 female patients who underwent the TVT-O suburethral sling at the Urology Department of the Health Centre in Prokuplje and Urology Hospital in Niš between May 2009 and February 2010. The mean patients’ age was 58 years (range 34-84 years). Preoperative evaluation included a detailed history and gynaecologic examination including urodynamic testing and voiding studies.UDI-6 and UIQ-7 score testing was performed before, and six months after surgery. All patients who demonstrated stress urinary incontinence with a Q-tip test-angle during maximal straining were included into the study. Postoperatively, outcomes evaluation included voiding function, anatomical parameters, complications, as well as subjective success rates. Results. The mayfly (Ephemeroptera) fauna was studied during investigations of the Vlasina River (Serbia) conducted in 1996. Twenty-six species from 14 genera belonging to eight families were recorded. Compared to similar aquatic ecosystems in Serbia and Europe, the ephemeropteran fauna of the Vlasina River is characterized by high species diversity. Good water quality and habitat heterogeneity led to the observed richness of taxa. Based on fauna distribution, the middle reach of the river can be divided into three different segments - upper, middle, and lower. Distribution of the two dominant families, Heptageniidae and Baetidae, is emphasized. Representatives of Baetidae reach their highest density in July, while Heptageniidae were the most abundant in November. The recorded mayflies represent widely distributed European or Holarctic species.

The present paper states conclusions about the quality of Danube water in the Belgrade Region based on analyses of the invertebrate community. The investigation was performed during periods of high (May, 2002) and low (October, 2002) water conditions. Meio- and macrozoobenthos were observed. Qualitative, quantitative, and saprobiological analy­ses were performed. The sampling area covered five stations along 66 km of the river. The community was represented by 26 species. Aquatic worms were the principal component of the benthos with respect to both species richness (six species) and abundance (58.39-99.47 % of the total community). Gastropods were also diverse (six species). Snails were found to be subdominant as far as participation in the total community density is concerned. Structure of the benthic community and the saprobity index (S= 2.78-3.43) indicated the presence of organic pollution. No notable differences of estimated environmental quality were observed between a station upstream from Belgrade and one situated below the exit from the broader territory of Belgrade. Since Belgrade is recognized as one of the main contaminants in regard to biodegradable pollutants in the Middle Danube, this finding points to an impressive self-purifying ability of this huge river.

Using high-level quantum chemical calculations, we predicted a strong O–H⋯C interaction between the apical carbon atoms of pyramidane and its derivatives and water molecules. Analysis of calculated electrostatic potential maps showed that there are areas of strong negative potential above apical carbon atoms in all studied structures. The results of quantum chemical calculations showed that the O–H⋯C interaction between the hydrogen atom of water and the apical carbon atom of pyramidane derivatives with four –CH3 substituents is unexpectedly strong, ΔECCSD(T)/CBS = −7.43 kcal mol−1. The strong hydrogen bonds were also predicted in the case of unsubstituted pyramidane (ΔECCSD(T)/CBS = −6.41 kcal mol−1) and pyramidane with four –OH substituents (ΔECCSD(T)/CBS = −5.87 kcal mol−1). Although there are not many crystal structures of pyramidane-like molecules, we extracted examples of pyramidal-shaped molecules with apical carbon atoms from the Cambridge Structural Database and analyzed their hydrogen-bonding patterns. Analysis of crystal structures confirmed the existence of short non-covalent contacts between apical carbon atoms and neighboring hydrogen atoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigates the effects of negative bias temperature (NBT) stress and irradiation on the threshold voltage (VT) of p-channel VDMOS transistors, focusing on degradation, recovery after each type of stress, and operational behavior under varying conditions. Shifts in VT (ΔVT) were analyzed under different stress orders, showing distinct influence mechanisms, including defects creation and their removal and electrochemical reactions. Recovery data after each type of stress indicated ongoing electrochemical processes, influencing subsequent stress responses. Although the ΔVT is not particularly pronounced during the recovery after irradiation, changes in subthreshold characteristics indicate the changes in defect densities that affect the behavior of the components during further application. Additionally, the findings show that the ΔVT during the NBT stress after irradiation (up to certain doses and conditions) remains relatively stable, but this is the result of a balance of competing mechanisms. A subthreshold characteristic analysis provided a further insight into the degradation dynamics. A particular attention was paid to analyzing ΔVT with a focus on predicting the lifetime. In practical applications, especially under pulsed operation, prior stresses altered the device's thermal and electrical performance. It was shown that self-heating effects were more pronounced in pre-stressed components, increasing the power dissipation and thermal instability. These insights additionally highlight the importance of understanding stress-induced degradation and recovery mechanisms for optimizing VDMOS transistor reliability in advanced electronic systems.
