We discuss the universal orbifold Euler characteristic and generalized orbifold Euler characteristics corresponding to finitely generated groups $A$ (the $A$-Euler characteristics). We show that the collection of all $A$-Euler characteristics for $A$ of the form $A'\times Z$ ($Z$ is the group of integers) with finite $A'$ determine the universal orbifold Euler characteristic.

The notion of effective topological complexity, introduced by B{\l}aszczyk and Kaluba, deals with using group actions in the configuration space in order to reduce the complexity of the motion planning algorithm. In this article we focus on studying several properties of such notion of topological complexity. We introduce a notion of effective LS-category which mimics the behaviour the usual LS-cat has in the non-effective setting. We use it to investigate the relationship between these effective invariants and the orbit map with respect of the group action, and we give numerous examples. Additionally, we investigate non-vanishing criteria based on a cohomological dimension bound of the saturated diagonal., Comment: 31 pages, 1 figure. We establish that the natural permutation representation of highly transitive groups cannot be realized as the full group of automorphisms of an idempotent finite-dimensional evolution algebra acting on the set of lines spanned by natural elements. For instance, for any sufficiently large integer $n$, and $k\geq 4$, there exists no idempotent evolution algebra $X$ such that $\dim X=n$, and $\operatorname{Aut}(X)$ is isomorphic to a proper $k$-transitive subgroup of $S_n$. However, we demonstrate that for any (not necessarily faithful) permutation representation $\xi\colon G \to S_n$ and any field $\Bbbk$, there exists an idempotent finite-dimensional evolution $\Bbbk$-algebra $X$ such that $\operatorname{Aut}(X)\cong G$ and the induced representation given by the $\operatorname{Aut}(X)$-action on the natural idempotents of $X$ is equivalent to $\xi$., Comment: 14 pages, no figures

We raise the question of the realizability of permutation modules in the context of Kahn's realizability problem for abstract groups and the $G$-Moore space problem. Specifically, given a finite group $G$, we consider a collection $\{M_i\}_{i=1}^n$ of finitely generated $\Z G$-modules that admit a submodule decomposition on which $G$ acts by permuting the summands. In this paper we solve in the positive the question of whether any finite set of integers, containing the zero, is the mapping degree set between two oriented closed connected manifolds of the same dimension. In this paper we introduce a new species of evolution algebras that we call Cayley evolution algebras. It is known that every finite group can be represented as the full group of automorphisms of a suitable compact dessin d'enfant. In this paper, we give a constructive and easy proof that the same holds for any countable group by considering non-compact dessins. Moreover, we show that any tame action of a countable group is so realizable.

It is well known that not every finite group arises as the full automorphism group of some group. Here we show that the situation is dramatically different when considering the category of partial groups, ${{\mathcal P}art}$, as defined by Chermak: given any group $H$ there exists infinitely many non isomorphic partial groups ${\mathbb M}$ such that $\operatorname{Aut}_{{\mathcal P}art}({\mathbb M})\cong H$. To prove this result, given any simple undirected graph $G$ we construct a partial group ${\mathbb P}(G)$, called the path partial group associated to $G$, such that $\operatorname{Aut}_{{\mathcal P}art}\big({\mathbb P}(G)\big)\cong \operatorname{Aut}_{{\mathcal G}raphs}(G)$. As a consequence, we solve the Kahn realizability problem in the category of simplicial sets.

An oriented closed connected N-manifold M is inflexible if it does not admit self-maps of unbounded degree. In addition, if all the maps from any other oriented closed connected N-manifold have bounded degree, then M is said to be strongly inflexible. The existence of simply-connected inflexible manifolds was established by Arkowitz and Lupton. However, the existence of simply-connected strongly inflexible manifolds is still an open question. In this paper we show that evolution algebras over any given field $\Bbbk$ are universally finite. In other words, given any finite group $G$, there exist infinitely many regular evolution algebras $X$ such that $Aut(X)\cong G$. The proof is built upon the construction of a covariant faithful functor from the category of finite simple (non oriented) graphs to the category of (finite dimensional) regular evolution algebras. Finally, we show that any constant finite algebraic affine group scheme $\mathbf{G}$ over $\Bbbk$ is isomorphic to the algebraic affine group scheme of automorphisms of a regular evolution algebra., Comment: Minor corrections. We construct the first example of a 5-dimensional simply connected compact manifold that admits a K-contact structure but does not admit a semi-regular Sasakian structure. For this, we need two ingredients: (a) to construct a suitable simply connected symplectic 4-manifold with disjoint symplectic surfaces spanning the homology, all of them but one of genus 1 and the other of genus g>1, (b) to prove a bound on the second Betti number $b_2$ of an algebraic surface with $b_1=0$ and having disjoint complex curves spanning the homology when all of them but one are of genus 1 and the other of genus g>1., Comment: 32 pages, no figures; v2. added a proof that the symplectic 4-manifold in [MRT] cannot be complex; v3. added computation of second Stiefel-Whitney class; v4. small changes. Let $G$ be a finite group and $\mathcal{A}_p(G)$ be the poset of nontrivial elementary abelian $p$-subgroups of $G$. Quillen conjectured that $O_p(G)$ is nontrivial if $\mathcal{A}_p(G)$ is contractible. We prove that $O_p(G)\neq 1$ for any group $G$ admitting a $G$-invariant acyclic $p$-subgroup complex of dimension $2$. In particular, it follows that Quillen's conjecture holds for groups of $p$-rank $3$. We also apply this result to establish Quillen's conjecture for some particular groups not considered in the seminal work of Aschbacher--Smith., Comment: 13 pages

Let $G$ be a group and let $\rho\colon G\to\operatorname{Sym}(V)$ be a permutation representation of $G$ on a set $V$. We prove that there is a faithful $G$-coalgebra $C$ such that $G$ arises as the image of the restriction of $\operatorname{Aut}(C)$ to $G(C)$, the set of grouplike elements of $C$. Furthermore, we show that $V$ can be regarded as a subset of $G(C)$ invariant through the $G$-action, and that the composition of the inclusion $G\hookrightarrow\operatorname{Aut}(C)$ with the restriction $\operatorname{Aut}(C)\to\operatorname{Sym}(V)$ is precisely $\rho$. We use these results to prove that isomorphism classes of certain families of groups can be distinguished through the coalgebras on which they act faithfully., Comment: 13 pages

In this paper we raise the realisability problem in arrow categories. Namely, for a fixed category $\mathcal{C}$ and for arbitrary groups $H\le G_1\times G_2$, is there an object $\phi \colon A_1 \rightarrow A_2$ in $\operatorname{Arr}(\mathcal{C})$ such that $\operatorname{Aut}_{\operatorname{Arr}(\mathcal{C})}(\phi) = H$, $\operatorname{Aut}_{\mathcal{C}}(A_1) = G_1$ and $\operatorname{Aut}_{\mathcal{C}}(A_2) = G_2$? We are interested in solving this problem when $\mathcal C =\mathcal{H}oTop_*$, the homotopy category of pointed topological spaces. To that purpose, we first settle that question in the positive when $\mathcal C = \mathcal{G}raphs$. Then, we construct an almost fully faithful functor from $\mathcal{G}raphs$ to $\operatorname{CDGA}$, the category of commutative differential graded algebras, that provides among other things, a positive answer to our question when $\mathcal C = \operatorname{CDGA}$ and, as long as we work with finite groups, when $\mathcal C =\mathcal{H}oTop_*$. Let $X$ be a finite type $A_n^2$-polyhedron, $n \geq 2$. In this paper we study the quotient group $\mathcal{E}(X)/\mathcal{E}_*(X)$, where $\mathcal{E}(X)$ is the group of self-homotopy equivalences of $X$ and $\mathcal{E}_*(X)$ the subgroup of self-homotopy equivalences inducing the identity on the homology groups of $X$. In this paper we construct an infinite family of homotopically rigid spaces. These examples are then used as building blocks to forge highly connected rational spaces with prescribed finite group of self-homotopy equivalences. We raise the question of realizability of group actions which is an extended version of the 1960's Kahn realizability problem for (abstract) groups. Namely, if $M$ is a $\mathbb ZG$-module for a group $G$, we say that a simply-connected space $X$ realize this action if, for some $k$, $\pi_k(X)$ as a $\mathbb Z \mathcal E (X) $-module for the group $\mathcal E (X)$ of self-homotopy equivalences of $X$, is isomorphic to $M$ as a $\mathbb ZG$-module. Which modules can be so realized? In this paper we obtain a positive answer for any faithful finitely generated $\mathbb Q G$-module, where $G$ is finite. Our proof relies on providing a positive answer to Kahn's problem for a large class of orthogonal groups of which, by using invariant theory, our case is shown to be a particular one., Comment: 13 pages, no figures

Nilpotency for discrete groups can be defined in terms of central extensions. In this paper, the analogous definition for spaces is stated in terms of principal fibrations having infinite loop spaces as fibers, yielding a new invariant we compare with classical cocategory, but also with the more recent notion of homotopy nilpotency introduced by Biedermann and Dwyer. This allows us to characterize finite homotopy nilpotent loop spaces in the spirit of Hubbuck's Torus Theorem, and corresponding results for $p$-compact groups and $p$-Noetherian groups., Comment: 20 pages, no figures

In this paper we prove that the inductive cocategory of a nilpotent $CW$-complex of finite type $X$, $\indcocat X$, is bounded above by an expression involving the inductive cocategory of the $p$-localisations of $X$. Our arguments can be dualised to LS category improving previous results by Cornea and Stanley. Let $G$ be a finite 2-group of maximal nilpotency class, and let $BG$ be its classifying space. We prove that iterated Massey products in $H^*(BG;\F_2)$ do characterize the homotopy type of $BG$ among 2-complete spaces with the same cohomological structure. As a consequence we get an alternative proof of the modular isomorphism problem for 2-groups of maximal nilpotency class.

In this paper we consider classifying spaces of a family of $p$-groups and we prove that mod $p$ cohomology enriched with Bockstein spectral sequences determines their homotopy type among $p$-completed CW-complexes. We describe all the fine group gradings, up to equivalence, on the Lie algebra $\mathfrak d_4$. This problem is equivalent to finding the maximal abelian diagonalizable subgroups of the automorphism group of $\mathfrak d_4$. We prove that there are fourteen by using two different viewpoints. The first approach is computational: we get a full description of the gradings by using a particular implementation of the automorphism group of the Dynkin diagram of $\mathfrak d_4$ and some algebraic groups stuff. The second approach, more qualitative, emphasizes some algebraic aspects, as triality, and it is mostly devoted to gradings involving the outer automorphisms of order three., Comment: 20 pages

In this paper we give a classification of the rank two p-local finite groups for odd p. This study requires the analisis of the possible saturated fusion systems in terms of the outer automorphism group ant the proper F-radical subgroups. Also, for each case in the classification, either we give a finite group with the corresponding fusion system or we check that it corresponds to an exotic p-local finite group, getting some new examples of these for p = 3.

We study the mod p cohomology of the classifying space of the projective unitary group PU(p). We first proof that old conjectures due to J.F. Adams, and Kono and Yagita about the structure of the mod p cohomology of classifying space of connected compact Lie groups held in the case of PU(p). Finally, we proof that the classifying space of the projective unitary group PU(p) is determined by its mod p cohomology as an unstable algebra over the Steenrod algebra for p>3, completing previous works for the cases p=2,3., Comment: 14 pages

A p-compact group, as defined by Dwyer and Wilkerson, is a purely homotopically defined p-local analog of a compact Lie group. It has long been the hope, and later the conjecture, that these objects should have a classification similar to the classification of compact Lie groups. In this paper we finish the proof of this conjecture, for p an odd prime, proving that there is a one-to-one correspondence between connected p-compact groups and finite reflection groups over the p-adic integers. We do this by providing the last, and rather intricate, piece, namely that the exceptional compact Lie groups are uniquely determined as p-compact groups by their Weyl groups seen as finite reflection groups over the p-adic integers. In this paper we answer negatively a question posed by Casacuberta, Farjoun, and Libman about the preservation of perfect groups under localization functors. Indeed, we show that a certain $P$-localization of Berrick and Casacuberta's universal acyclic group is not perfect. We also investigate under which conditions perfectness is preserved: For instance, we show that if the localization of a perfect group is finite then it is perfect., Comment: 11 pages. Often a localization functor (in the category of groups) sends a finite simple group to another finite simple group. We study when such a localization also induces a localization between the automorphism groups and between the universal central extensions.
