Abstract Topological photonics attract significant interests due to their intriguing fundamental physics and potential applications. Researchers are actively exploring various artificial platforms to realize novel topological phenomena, which provides promising pathways for the development of robust photonic devices. Among these platforms, femtosecond laser direct-written photonic waveguides show unique ability to visualize intricate light dynamics in 2 + 1 dimensions, which rendering them ideal tools for investigating topological photonics. By integrating topological concepts into these waveguides, researchers not only deepen their understanding of topological physics but also provide potential methodology for developing advanced topological photonic integrated devices. In this review, we discuss recent experimental implementations of different topological phases within femtosecond laser direct-written photonic waveguides, as well as the fascinating physical phenomena induced by the interplay of topology with non-Hermiticity, nonlinearity and quantum physics are also introduced. The exploration of topological waveguide arrays shows great promise in advancing the field of topological photonics, providing a solid foundation for further research and innovation in this rapidly developing domain.

Despite the fact that doping nanoparticles into insulating transformer oil has proven to be an effective method of enhancing its dielectric and electrical properties, it remains unclear how different types and surface conditions of nanoparticles may affect their dielectric and electrical properties. Therefore, the effect of doping various types of BN nanoparticles (nanosphere, nanotube, and nanosheet) in insulating mineral oil (MO) on the diffusion properties of water molecules and electrical properties across the BN/MO interface was investigated using molecular dynamics (MD) and Density Functional Theory (DFT) simulations. Our results show that different surface morphology and grafted functional groups in different types of BN nanoparticles have a significant impact both on the water diffusion behavior and the interfacial potential barrier across the interface between BN and MO. In the MO system directly doped by BN nanospheres, water diffusion behavior is not significantly restricted. However, grafting -NH2 polar groups onto the BN nanoparticle surface may significantly limit the diffusion behavior of water due to the strong attraction between the -NH2 polar groups and water molecules; the most significant effect is with nanospheres, followed by nanotubes and nanosheets. In terms of electrical properties across the interface between BN and MO, the h-BN surface (derived from BN nanosheets and nanotubes) acts as a trap for electrons in MO (−0.59 eV), while the c-BN surface (derived from BN nanospheres) acts as a potential barrier for electrons in MO (1.45 eV), and it is noteworthy that the presence of water molecules near the interface between BN and MO has little impact on the potential barriers. Advancing a fundamental understanding of the electrical and water diffusion properties of MO in correlation with the surface morphology of different types of nanoparticles is key to improving the insulation properties of oil-impregnated power transformers.

Abstract Background Melanoma is a malignant tumor with a high mortality rate. Some microorganisms have been shown to activate the immune system and limit cancer progression. The objective of this study is to evaluate the anti-melanoma effect of Neospora caninum, a livestock pathogen with no pathogenic activity in humans. Methods Neospora caninum tachyzoites were inoculated into a C57BL/6 mouse melanoma model by intratumoral and distal subcutaneous injections. Tumor volumes were measured, and cell death areas were visualized by hematoxylin and eosin staining and quantified. Apoptosis in cell cultures and whole tumors was detected by propidium iodide (PI) and TUNEL staining, respectively. Cytokine and tumor-associated factor levels in tumors and spleens were detected by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Infiltration of macrophages and CD8+ T cells in the tumor microenvironment (TME) were detected by immunohistochemistry with anti-CD68 and anti-CD8 antibodies, respectively. Finally, 16S rRNA sequencing of mice cecal contents was performed to evaluate the effect of N. caninum on gut microbial diversity. Cation-anion co-doping has proven to be an effective method of improving the photocatalytic performances of CaTiO3 perovskites. In this regard, (La/Ce-N/S) co-doped CaTiO3 models were investigated for the first time using first-principles calculations based on a supercell of 2 × 2 × 2 with La/Ce concentrations of 0.125, 0.25, and 0.375. The energy band structure, density of states, charge differential density, electron-hole effective masses, optical properties, and the water redox potential were calculated for various models. According to our results, (La-S)-doped CaTiO3 with a doping ratio of 0.25 (LCOS1-0.25) has superior photocatalytic hydrolysis properties due to the synergistic performances of its narrow band gap, fast carrier mobility, and superb ability to absorb visible light. Apart from the reduction of the band gap, the introduction of intermediate energy levels by La and Ce within the band gap also facilitates the transition of excited electrons from valence to the conduction band. Our calculations and findings provide theoretical insights and solid predictions for discovering CaTiO3 perovskites with excellent photocatalysis performances.

The gamma-ray vortex burst in the nonlinear Thomson scattering when the laser wakefield accelerated electron bunch collides with an ultra-intense Laguerre–Gaussian laser that was reflected from the refocusing spiral plasma mirror. The orbit angular momentum of the scattering laser would be transferred to the gamma radiation through the scattering process. The 3-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations gave the electron dynamics in the scattering, which determines the characteristics of the vortical radiation. The radiation calculation results illustrated the burst of gamma-ray vortex and surprisingly revealed the radiation pattern distortion phenomenon due to the nonlinear effect. This scheme can not only simplify the experimental setup for the generation of twisted radiation but also boost the yield of vortical gamma photons. The peak brightness of the gamma-ray vortex was estimated to be 1 × 1022 photons/s/mm2/mrad2/0.1% BW at 1 MeV, which might pave the way for the researches on angular momentum-related nuclear physics.

Balantioides coli plays an important role in the diarrhea of weaned piglets, but its pathogenic potential and interaction with gut microbes remain unclear. To investigate the impact of B. coli colonization on the gut bacterial structure and function of weaned piglets, a metagenomic analysis based on shotgun sequencing was performed on fresh fecal samples collected from ten B. coli-colonized piglets and eight B. coli-free ones in this study. The results showed that decreasing diversity and shifted composition and function of the bacterial community were detected in the weaned piglets infected by B. coli. In contrast to the B. coli-negative group, the relative abundances of some members of the Firmicutes phylum including Clostridium, Ruminococcus species, and Intestinimonas butyriciproducens, which produce short-chain fatty acids, were significantly reduced in the B. coli-positive group. Notably, some species of the Prevotella genus (such as Prevotella sp. CAG:604 and Prevotella stercorea) were significantly increased in abundance in the B. coli-positive piglets. A functional analysis of the gut microbiota demonstrated that the differential gene sets for the metabolism of carbohydrates and amino acids were abundant in both groups, and the more enriched pathways in B. coli-infected piglets were associated with the sugar-specific phosphotransferase system (PTS) and the two-component regulatory system, as well as lipopolysaccharide (LPS) biosynthesis. Furthermore, several species of Prevotella were significantly positively correlated to the synthesis of lipid A, leading to the exporting of endotoxins and, thereby, inducing inflammation in the intestines of weaned piglets. Taken together, these findings revealed that colonization by B. coli was distinctly associated with the dysbiosis of gut bacterial structure and function in weaned piglets. Lower relative abundances of Clostridiaceae and Ruminococcaceae and higher abundances of Prevotella species were biomarkers of B. coli infection in weaned piglets.

Wetlands are vulnerable to climate change and human activities. However, the past changes caused by climate and human activities on net primary production (NPP) were unclear on the Zoige Plateau, which is on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. In this study, the impact of climatic and anthropogenic pressure on the NPP of wetlands on the Zoige Plateau from 1990 to 2015 was explored. We assessed and quantified the effects of climatic and anthropogenic factors on NPP using a simulated process model (LPJ_WHyMe) and a remote sensing model (CASA). Our simulations suggested that the annual average potential net primary production (NPPp) fluctuated during the study period and peaked in 2008 (347.37 g C m-2 year-1), while the total wetland NPPp peaked in 2000 (1.75 Tg C year-1). The results also showed that the annual average actual net primary production (NPPa) reached the lowest value of 206.04 g C m-2 year-1 in 2000. The total wetland NPPa ranged from 0.97 to 1.15 Tg C year-1 and continuously decreased over the study period. Our research revealed that human activities accounted for 22.37–36.45% of wetland NPP reduction over the study period. These results suggested that reducing human interventions can improve the NPP of wetlands. However, some of the negative effects of human activities have been offset by ecological restoration projects. These results provide a reference and scientific support for wetland protection and sustainable development.

Carbohydrates are the main source of nutrition for B. coli, supplying energy for cell growth and development. The research aimed at investigating the mechanism of starch on the growth and replication of B. coli. Single-cell separation was used to isolate single trophozoites of B. coli under a stereomicroscope, transcriptomic profiling was conducted based on the SMART-seq2 single-cell RNA-seq method. Comparative genomic analysis was performed on B. coli and eight other ciliates to obtain specific and expanded gene families of B. coli. GO and KEGG enrichment analysis were used to analyze the key genes of B. coli under the action of starch in the present study. The results of single-cell RNA-seq depicts starch affected the growth and replication of B. coli in two ways: (1) the cell cycle was positively promoted by the activation of the cAMP/PKA signaling pathway via glycolysis; (2) the cell autophagy was suppressed through the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway. Genes involved in endocytosis, carbohydrate utilization, and the cAMP/PKA signaling pathway were highly enriched in both specific and expanded gene families of B. coli. Starch can be ingested and hydrolyzed into glucose, in turn affecting various biological processes of B. coli. The molecular mechanism of the effect of starch on the growth and proliferation of B. coli by promoting cell cycle and inhibiting the autophagy of trophozoites has been elucidated in our study.

As a sensitive, observable, and comprehensive indicator of climate change, plant phenology has become a vital topic of global change. Studies about plant phenology and its responses to climate change in natural ecosystems have drawn attention to the effects of human activities on phenology in/around urban regions. The key factors and mechanisms of phenological and human factors in the process of urbanization are still unclear. In this study, we analyzed variations in xylophyta phenology in densely populated cities during the fast urbanization period of China (from 1963 to 1988). We assessed the length of the growing season affected by the temperature and precipitation. Temperature increased the length of the growing season in most regions, while precipitation had the opposite effect. Moreover, the plant-growing season is more sensitive to preseason climate factors than to annual average climate factors. The increased population reduced the length of the growing season, while the growing GDP increased the length of the growing season in most regions (8 out of 13). By analyzing the impact of the industry ratio, we found that the correlation between the urban management of emerging cities (e.g., Chongqing, Zhejiang, and Guizhou) and the growing season is more significant, and the impact is substantial. In contrast, urban management in most areas with vigorously developed heavy industry (e.g., Heilongjiang, Liaoning, and Beijing) has a weak and insignificant effect on plant phenology. These results indicate that different urban development patterns can influence urban plant phenology. Our results provide some support and new thoughts for future research on urban plant phenology.

We experimentally realize fractal-like photonic lattices by use of the cw-laser-writing technique, thereby observing distinct compact localized states (CLSs) associated with different flatbands in the same lattice setting. Such triangle-shaped lattices, akin to the first generation Sierpinski lattices, possess a band structure where singular non-degenerate and nonsingular degenerate flatbands coexist. By proper phase modulation of an input excitation beam, we demonstrate not only the simplest CLSs but also their superimposition into other complex mode structures. Our experimental and numerical results are corroborated by theoretical analysis. Furthermore, we show by numerical simulation a dynamical oscillation of the flatband states due to beating of the CLSs that have different eigenenergies. These results may provide inspiration for exploring fundamental phenomena arising from the interplay of fractal structure, flatband singularity, and real-space topology.

NADPH is a pivotal cofactor that maintains redox homeostasis and lipogenesis in cancer cells and interference with NADPH production is a promising approach for treating cancer. However, how normal and cancer cells differentially exploit NADPH-producing pathways is unclear, and selective approaches to targeting NADPH are lacking. Here, we show that the assayed cancer cell lines preferentially depend on ME1-mediated NADPH production. ME1 knockdown increases intracellular ROS levels and impairs lipogenesis in cancer cells, leading to retarded proliferation and increased anoikis, while sparing normal cells. Notably, ME1 interference ultimately resulted in adaptive upregulation of mitochondrial IDH2 dependent of AMPK-FoxO1 activation to replenish the NADPH pool and mitigate cytosolic ROS. Combining ME1 ablation and IDH2 inhibition drastically reduces intracellular NADPH and prevents resistance to ME1 interference, resulting in increased apoptosis and impeded tumor growth and metastasis. This study demonstrates that cytosolic ME1 integrated with mitochondrial IDH2 is essential for tumor growth and metastasis, thereby highlighting the blockade of metabolic compensation by disrupting mitochondrial-cytosol NADPH transport as a promising approach to selectively targeting NADPH in cancer cells that rely on NADPH-driven antioxidant systems.

We demonstrate experimentally the existence of compact localized states (CLSs) in a quasi-one-dimensional photonic rhombic lattice in the presence of two distinct refractive-index gradients (i.e., a driven lattice ribbon) acting as external electric fields. Such a lattice is composed of an array of periodically arranged evanescently coupled waveguides, which hosts a perfect flatband that touches both remaining dispersive bands when it is not driven. The external driving is realized by modulating the relative writing beam intensity of adjacent waveguides. We find that a y-gradient set perpendicularly to the ribbon preserves the flatband while removing the band-touching. The undriven dipole-like CLS—which occupies two lattice sites over one unit cell—turns into a quincunx-shaped CLS spanned over two unit cells. Instead, an x-gradient acting parallel to the ribbon yields a Stark ladder of the CLS whose spatial profile is unchanged with respect to the undriven case. We notably find that their superposition leads to Bloch-like oscillations in momentum space.

Betatron radiation from laser wakefield accelerated electrons and X-rays scattered off a counter-propagating relativistic electron bunch are collimated and hold the potential to extend the energy range to hard X-ray or gamma ray band. The peak brightness of these incoherent radiations could reach the level of the brightest synchrotron light sources in the world due to their femtosecond pulse duration and source size down to a few micrometers. In this article, the principle and properties of these radiation sources are briefly reviewed and compared. Then we present our recent progress in betatron radiation enhancement in the perspective of both photon energy and photon number. The enhancement is triggered by using a clustering gas target, arousing a second injection of a fiercely oscillating electron bunch with large charge or stimulating a resonantly enhanced oscillation of the ionization injected electrons. By adopting these methods, bright photon source with energy over 100 keV is generated which would greatly impact applications such as nuclear physics, diagnostic radiology, laboratory astrophysics and high-energy density science.

A series of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) samples were synthesized by adjusting the molar ratio of (NH4)2CO3 to Na2CO3 in a mixed precipitant for evaluating the effects of ammonia from (NH4)2CO3 as a complexing agent and Na2CO3 as a precipitant on the morphology and electrochemical performances of LNMO. In this research, a rapid precipitation method followed by hydrothermal treatment was used to prepare the precursors of LNMO, and different molar ratios (0:1, 1:2, 1:1, 2:1, 1:0) of (NH4)2CO3 to Na2CO3 were used for mixed precipitants. The test results revealed that the cathode material exhibits the best electrochemical performance when the molar ratio of (NH4)2CO3 to Na2CO3 is set at 1:2, displaying a specific discharge capacity of 129.4 mA h g−1 at 0.5 C and a capacity retention of 82.3% after 200 charge–discharge cycles. In addition, it still shows a high rate performance with a discharge capacity of 112.7 mA h g−1 at 10 C and 98.8 mA h g−1 at 20 C, which is attributed to an accurate Ni/Mn ratio, smaller primary particle sizes and a porous spherical morphology.

piggyBac, a type II transposon that is useful for efficient transgenesis and insertional mutagenesis, has been used for effective and stable transfection in a wide variety of organisms. In this study we investigate the potential use of the piggyBac transposon system for forward genetics studies in the apicomplexan parasite Eimeria tenella. Using the restriction enzyme-mediated integration (REMI) method, E. tenella sporozoites were electroporated with a donor plasmid containing the enhanced yellow fluorescent protein (EYFP) gene flanked by piggyBac inverted terminal repeats (ITRs), an Asc I-linearized helper plasmid containing the transposase gene and the restriction enzyme Asc I. Subsequently, electroporated sporozoites were inoculated into chickens via the cloacal route and transfected progeny oocysts expressing EYFP were sorted by flow cytometry. A transgenic E. tenella population was selected by successive in vivo passage. Southern-blotting analysis showed that exogenous DNA containing the EYFP gene was integrated into the parasite genome at a limited number of integration sites and that the inserted part of the donor plasmid was the fragment located between the 5' and 3' ITRs as indicated by primer-specific PCR screening. Genome walking revealed that the insertion sites were TTAA-specific, which is consistent with the transposition characteristics of piggyBac.

Microtwinning is observed as an important mechanism in γ′ precipitate-strengthened Ni-based superalloys during service at intermediate temperatures. Here, the effect of crystal orientation and stress direction on microtwinning was investigated. The result indicates that the formation of microtwins exhibits orientation dependence and tension-compression asymmetry. Based on the analysis of slip and twinning competition behavior under different conditions, it is deemed that the a/2〈110〉 matrix dislocations would dissociate into a/6〈112〉 Shockley partials in the γ matrix and then a Shockley partial sheared γ’ phase and formed microtwins.

Photosynthesis system Ⅱ (PS Ⅱ) inhibitors can block electron transport and disrupt plant photosynthesis and are used as herbicides. In order to develop new and effective PS II inhibitors, the lead structure lawsone was first found with remarkable herbicidal activity based on a virtual screening strategy, and its derivatives were designed and synthesized. The results of herbicidal activity evaluation showed that most of the compounds could achieve more than 80 % inhibitory effect on roots and stems of Portulaca oleracea at a dose of 100 μg/mL. Meanwhile, compound 4d showed more than 90 % inhibition on the stem of P. oleracea and on the root of Echinochloa crusgalli, which were superior to lawsone (64.9 and 67.6 %) and atrazine (63.6 and 65.9 %), respectively. Interestingly, 4d exhibited 100 % post-emergence herbicidal activity to Amaranthus retroflexus and Abutilon theophrasti at a dosage of 300 g a.i./ha, which was similar to atrazine but superior to lawsone. In addition, compound 4d can affect the efficiency of the photochemical process and strong bind PS II D1 protein. It revealed that compound 4d can be used as a promising PS II D1 inhibitor. This study provides a promising lead compound for developing new PS II inhibitors.

As the increasing demand for high temperature performance of the Ni-based single crystal blades, the orientation consistency of the blades has become more and more important. In this work, a novel high-throughput mold capable of producing four single crystal blades with exactly the same orientation was proposed. The effects of the two important parameters as connector height and blade placement angle on single crystal growth were investigated by ProCAST simulation. The results showed that the 90° connector with a height of 50 mm could obtain the most appropriate temperature gradient for the production of single crystal blades, and when the blades were placed at 120° and 270°, the flattest liquid isotherm could be obtained. However, due to the difference in the distance of the nucleation points from the mold center and the direction where the thin edge of the blade platform faced, the blade placed at 120° had a larger platform area occupied by the stray grains. Therefore, the structure of this mold was determined by using a 90° connector and placing blades at 270°. At last, using this mold, four single crystal blades with the same three-dimensional orientation and no stray grains were successfully produced. These results fully demonstrated the feasibility of this novel mold and also provided ideas for using simulation methods to guide the design of the new mold structure.

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is an efficient depressant for pyrite (FeS2) flotation. However, the depressing mechanism of H2O2 is not fully understood. In this paper, the depressing capacity of H2O2 for pyrite was examined by flotation tests. Results revealed that pyrite flotation could be inhibited by H2O2 at pH 6.4. The pyrite powder in H2O2 solution enhanced the release of O2 from H2O2. However, the O2 concentration in the solution was less than that of H2O2; thus, H2O2 is the major oxidant in the solution. Moreover, density functional theory calculations were performed to study the interactions between H2O2 and hydrated pyrite (100) surface. The H2O2 molecule tended to react with the pyrite surface to generate one S=O bond and an H2O molecule. The possible binding models of O2 molecules on the pyrite (100) surface were also studied for comparison. The O2 dissociation on the pyrite surface was more favorable than the adsorption of O2 as a whole. In addition, the orbital interaction in the S=O bond raised from the reaction of H2O2/O2 with the pyrite surface was also investigated by the density states analysis. These results provide some insights into the oxidizing effect of H2O2 in pyrite flotation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
