Previously reported TiO2 nanowire fabrication from Ni catalysts shows a surprising amount of phosphorous (P) contamination incorporated into the seed particle. We proposed this unintentional P-doping of Ni particles aids the mechanism for nanowire growth and occurs by an alternative pathway from the Vapor-Liquid-Solid (VLS) mechanism. To confirm this new mechanism, mixed phase NiP/Ni2P (NixPy) and Ni2P nanoparticles were fabricated and the central role of phosphorous in TiO 2 nanowire synthesis confirmed. This newly developed P-assisted fabrication method yielded crystalline rutile TiO2 nanowires. In this mechanism solid, quasi-spherical catalyst particles attached to the ends of nanowires and surrounded by a Ni/P liquid shell are responsible for the nanowire growth. The growing end of the nanowire appears to form a "tangent- plane" to the solid catalyst core with the liquid shell wetting and occupying the interstice between the catalyst and the nanowire. In Ni xPy assisted growth, nanowire diameters occurred as small as 12.3 nm, some of the thinnest yet reported TiO2 nanowires resulting from atmospheric-pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD) growth. © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2013.

A problem for a nanosized penny-shaped material surface attached to the boundary of an elastic isotropic semi-space is considered. An axisymmetric normal traction is applied to a material surface. The surface is modeled using the Steigmann--Ogden form of surface energy. The problem is solved by using the Boussinesq potentials represented by the Hankel transforms of certain unknown functions. With the help of these functions, the problem can be reduced to a system of two singular integral equations. Two types of material surface tip boundary conditions are considered: free tip conditions and conditions with a compensated surface prestress term. The numerical solution of this system is obtained by expanding each unknown function into a series based on Chebyshev polynomials. Then the approximations of the unknown functions can be obtained from a system of linear algebraic equations. Accuracy of the numerical procedure is studied. Various numerical examples for different values of the surface energy parameters are considered. It is shown that both the surface parameters and the type of tip conditions have significant influence on the behavior of the material system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An axisymmetric problem for a frictionless contact of a rigid stamp with a semi-space in the presence of surface energy in the Steigmann–Ogden form is studied. The method of Boussinesq potentials is used to obtain integral representations of the stresses and the displacements. Using the Hankel transform, the problem is reduced to a single integral equation of the first kind on a contact interval with an additional condition. The integral equation is studied for solvability. It is shown that for the classic problem in the absence of surface effects and for the problem with the Gurtin–Murdoch surface energy without surface tension, the obtained equation represents a Cauchy singular integral equation. At the same time, for the Gurtin–Murdoch model with a non-zero surface tension and for the general Steigmann–Ogden model, the problem results in the integral equation of the first kind with a weakly singular or a continuous kernel, correspondingly. Hence, the contact problem is ill-posed in these cases. The integral equation of the first kind with an additional condition is solved approximately by using Gauss–Chebyshev quadrature for evaluation of the integrals.
