We present an enhanced off-lattice kinetic Monte Carlo (OLKMC) model, based on a new method for tolerant classification of atomistic local-environments that is invariant under Euclidean-transformations and permutations of atoms. Our method ensures that environments within a norm-based tolerance are classified as equivalent. During OLKMC simulations, our method guarantees to elide the maximum number of redundant saddle-point searches in symmetrically equivalent local-environments. Hence, we are able to study the trapping/detrapping of hydrogen from up to five-vacancy clusters and simultaneously the effect hydrogen has on the diffusivity of these clusters. These processes occur at vastly different timescales at room temperature in body-centred cubic iron. We are able to predict the diffusion pathways of clusters/complexes without a priori assumptions of their mechanisms, not only reproducing previously reported mechanisms but also discovering new ones for larger complexes. We detail the hydrogen-induced changes in the clusters' diffusion mechanisms and find evidence that, in contrast to mono-vacancies, the introduction of hydrogen to larger clusters can increase their diffusivity. We compare the effective hydrogen diffusivity to Oriani's classical theory of trapping, finding general agreement and some evidence that hydrogen may not always be in equilibrium with traps, when the traps are mobile. Finally, we are able to compute the trapping atmosphere of meta-stable states surrounding non-point traps, opening new avenues to better understand and predict hydrogen embrittlement in complex alloys.

Researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology(NIST) have measured the value of the Planck constant to be $h =6.626\,069\,934(89)\times 10^{-34}\,$J$\,$s (relative standard uncertainty $13\times 10^{-9}$). The result is based on over 10$\,$000 weighings of masses with nominal values ranging from 0.5$\,$kg to 2$\,$kg with the Kibble balance NIST-4. The uncertainty has been reduced by more than twofold relative to a previous determination because of three factors: (1) a much larger data set than previously available, allowing a more realistic, and smaller, Type A evaluation; (2) a more comprehensive measurement of the back action of the weighing current on the magnet by weighing masses up to 2$\,$kg, decreasing the uncertainty associated with magnet non-linearity; (3) a rigorous investigation of the dependence of the geometric factor on the coil velocity reducing the uncertainty assigned to time-dependent leakage of current in the coil., Comment: 11 pages 5 figures, published in metrologia

The ALMA Observation Support Tool (OST) is an ALMA simulator which is interacted with solely via a standard web browser. It is aimed at users who may or may not be experts in interferometry, or those that do not wish to familarise themselves with the simulation components of a data reduction package. It has been designed to offer full imaging simulation capability for an arbitrary ALMA observation while maintaining the accessibility of other online tools such as the ALMA Sensitivity Calculator. Simulation jobs are defined by selecting and entering options on a standard web form. The user can specify the standard parameters that would need to be considered for an ALMA observation (e.g. pointing direction, frequency set up, duration), and there is also the option to upload arbitrary sky models in FITS format. Once submitted, jobs are sequentially processed by a remote server running a CASA-based back-end system. The user is notified by email when the job is complete, and directed to a standard web page which contains the results of the simulation and a range of downloadable data products. The momentum distribution is one of the most important quantities which provides information about interactions in many-body systems. At the same time it is a quantity that can easily be accessed in experiments on ultracold atoms. In this paper, we consider mixtures of light and heavy fermionic atoms in an optical lattice described effectively by the Falicov-Kimball model. Using a Monte Carlo method, we study how different ordered density-wave phases can be detected by measurement of the momentum distribution of the light atoms. We also demonstrate that ordered phases can be seen in Bragg scattering experiments. Our results indicate that the main factor that determines the momentum distribution of the light atoms is the trap confinement. On the other hand, the pattern formed by the heavy atoms seen in the Bragg scattering experiments is very sensitive to the temperature and possibly can be used in low-temperature thermometry., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures

We discuss the application of a strong-coupling expansion (perturbation theory in the hopping) for studying light-Fermi-heavy-Bose (like $^{40}$K-$^{87}$Rb) mixtures in optical lattices. We use the strong-coupling method to evaluate the efficiency for pre-forming molecules, the entropy per particle and the thermal fluctuations. We show that within the strong interaction regime (and at high temperature), the strong-coupling expansion is an economical way to study this problem. In some cases, it remains valid even down to low temperatures. Because the computational effort is minimal, the strong-coupling approach allows us to work with much larger system sizes, where boundary effects can be eliminated, which is particularly important at higher temperatures. Since the strong-coupling approach is so efficient and accurate, it allows one to rapidly scan through parameter space in order to optimize the pre-forming of molecules on a lattice (by choosing the lattice depth and interspecies attraction). Based on the strong-coupling calculations, we test the thermometry scheme based on the fluctuation-dissipation theorem and find the scheme gives accurate temperature estimation even at very low temperature. We believe this approach and the calculation results will be useful in the design of the next generation of experiments, and will hopefully lead to the ability to form dipolar matter in the quantum degenerate regime., Comment: 14 pages,8 figures

Ultracold ground state dipolar 40K-87Rb molecules have recently been produced in a loose harmonic trap by employing a magnetic field sweep across a Feshbach resonance followed by stimulated Raman adiabatic passage [K.-K. Ni et al., Science 322, 231 (2008)]. The overall experimental efficiency for molecule formation was around 20%. We show that the efficiency can be increased to nearly 100% if one first loads the atomic gases into an optical lattice of the appropriate depth and tunes the interspecies attraction to have exactly one atom of each species at an occupied lattice site. Our proposed scheme provides a large enhancement to the dipolar molecule density even at relatively high temperatures, and avoids three-body recombination loss by preventing lattice sites from being triply occupied., Comment: (5 pages, 3 pages, submitted to Phys. The finite temperature phase diagram of two-dimensional dipolar bosons versus dipolar interaction strength is discussed. We identify the stable phases as dipolar superfluid (DSF), dipolar Wigner crystal (DWC), dipolar hexatic fluid (DHF), and dipolar normal fluid (DNF). We also show that other interesting phases like dipolar supersolid (DSS) and dipolar hexatic superfluid (DHSF) are at least metastable, and can potentially be reached by thermal quenching. In particular, for large densities or strong dipolar interactions, we find that the DWC exists at low temperatures, but melts into a DHF at higher temperatures, where translational crystaline order is destroyed but orientational order is preserved. Upon further increase in temperature the DHF phase melts into the DNF, where both orientational and translational lattice order are absent. Lastly, we discuss the static structure factor for some of the stable phases and show that they can be identified via optical Bragg scattering measurements.

We show that there are effective three- and higher-body interactions generated by the two-body collisions of atoms confined in the lowest vibrational states of a 3D optical lattice. The collapse and revival dynamics of approximate coherent states loaded into a lattice are a particularly sensitive probe of these higher-body interactions; the visibility of interference fringes depend on both two-, three-, and higher-body energy scales, and these produce an initial dephasing that can help explain the surprisingly rapid decay of revivals seen in experiments. If inhomogeneities in the lattice system are sufficiently reduced, longer timescale partial and nearly full revivals will be visible. We use the Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism to analyze the ground state phases of harmonically trapped two-species fermion mixtures with unequal masses. In the weakly attracting limit and around unitarity, we find that the superfluid order parameter is spatially modulated around the trap center, and that its global maximum occurs at a finite distance away from the trap center where the mixture is locally unpolarized. As the attraction strength increases towards the molecular limit, the spatial modulations gradually disappear while the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) type nonmodulated superfluid region expands until the entire mixture becomes locally unpolarized., Comment: 4+ pages and 3 figures

We describe interacting mixtures of ultracold bosonic and fermionic atoms in harmonically confined optical lattices. For a suitable choice of parameters we study the emergence of superfluid and Fermi liquid (non-insulating) regions out of Bose-Mott and Fermi-band insulators, due to finite Boson and Fermion hopping. We obtain the shell structure for the system and show that angular momentum can be transferred to the non-insulating regions from Laguerre-Gaussian beams, which combined with Bragg spectroscopy can reveal all superfluid and Fermi liquid shells., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

The attractive Fermi-Hubbard Hamiltonian is solved via the Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism to analyze the ground state phases of population imbalanced fermion mixtures in harmonically trapped two-dimensional optical lattices. In the low density limit the superfluid order parameter modulates in the radial direction towards the trap edges to accommodate the unpaired fermions that are pushed away from the trap center with a single peak in their density. However in the high density limit while the order parameter modulates in the radial direction towards the trap center for low imbalance, it also modulates towards the trap edges with increasing imbalance until the superfluid to normal phase transition occurs beyond a critical imbalance. This leads to a single peak in the density of unpaired fermions for low and high imbalance but leads to double peaks for intermediate imbalance., Comment: 4 pages with 4 figures, accepted to appear in PRA

Regular pattern formation is ubiquitous in nature; it occurs in biological, physical, and materials science systems. Here we propose a set of experiments with ultracold atoms that show how to examine different types of pattern formation. In particular, we show how one can see the analog of labyrinthine patterns (so-called quantum emulsions) in mixtures of light and heavy atoms (that tend to phase separate) by tuning the trap potential and we show how complex geometrically ordered patterns emerge (when the mixtures do not phase separate), which could be employed for low-temperature thermometry. The local density approximation is used to study the ground state superfluid properties of harmonically trapped p-wave Fermi gases as a function of fermion-fermion attraction strength. While the density distribution is bimodal on the weakly attracting BCS side, it becomes unimodal with increasing attraction and saturates towards the BEC side. This non-monotonic evolution is related to the topological gapless to gapped phase transition, and may be observed via radio-frequency spectroscopy since quasi-particle transfer current requires a finite threshold only on the BEC side., Comment: 4 pages and 4 figures, to be submitted to PRA

Weakly interacting atomic or molecular bosons in quantum degenerate regime and trapped in harmonically confined optical lattices, exhibit a wedding cake structure consisting of insulating (Mott) shells. It is shown that superfluid regions emerge between Mott shells as a result of fluctuations due to finite hopping. It is found that the order parameter equation in the superfluid regions is not of the Gross-Pitaeviskii type except near the insulator to superfluid boundaries. The excitation spectra in the Mott and superfluid regions are obtained, and it is shown that the superfluid shells posses low energy sound modes with spatially dependent sound velocity described by a local index of refraction directly related to the local superfluid density. Lastly, the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition and vortex-antivortex pairs are discussed in thin (wide) superfluid shells (rings) limited by three (two) dimensional Mott regions., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures

We analyze the ground state phases of two-component ($\sigma \equiv \lbrace \uparrow, \downarrow \rbrace$) population- and mass-balanced ($N_\uparrow = N_\downarrow$ and $m_\uparrow = m_\downarrow$) but trap-imbalanced ($\omega_\uparrow \ne \omega_\downarrow$) fermion mixtures as a function of interaction strength from the weak attraction Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) to the strong attraction Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) limit. In the BCS limit, we find that the unpolarized superfluid (UPS) fermions exist away from the central core of the trapping potentials, and are surrounded by partially polarized normal (P$\sigma$PN) fermions. As the interactions increase towards unitarity, we find that the central P$\sigma$PN core first transitions to a UPS, and then expands towards the edges until the entire mixture becomes a UPS in the BEC limit., Comment: 4 pages and 3 figures

We have observed that the collisional frequency shift in primary caesium fountain clocks varies with the clock state population composition and, in particular, is zero for a given fraction of the |F = 4, mF = 0> atoms, depending on the initial cloud parameters. We present a theoretical model explaining our observations. The possibility of the collisional shift cancellation implies an improvement in the performance of caesium fountain standards and a simplification in their operation. Our results also have implications for test operation of fountains at multiple pi/2 pulse areas.

A method is described for estimating effective scattering lengths via spectroscopy on a trapped pair of atoms. The method relies on the phenomena that the energy levels of two atoms in a harmonic trap are shifted by their collisional interaction. The amount of shift depends on the strength of the interaction (i.e. scattering length). By combining the spectra of the trap state energy levels and a suitable model for the effective scattering length, an estimate for the latter may be inferred. Two practical methods for measuring the trap spectra are proposed and illustrated in examples. The accuracy of the scheme is analyzed and requirements on measurement precision are given., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

We optimize the turning on of a one-dimensional optical potential, V_L(x,t) = S(t) V_0 cos^2(kx) to obtain the optimal turn-on function S(t) so as to load a Bose-Einstein condensate into the ground state of the optical lattice of depth V_0. Specifically, we minimize interband excitations at the end of the turn-on of the optical potential at the final ramp time t_r, where S(t_r) = 1, given that S(0) = 0. Detailed numerical calculations confirm that a simple unit cell model is an excellent approximation when the turn-on time t_r is long compared with the inverse of the band excitation frequency and short in comparison with nonlinear time \hbar/\mu where \mu is the chemical potential of the condensate. We demonstrate using the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with an optimal turn-on function S(t) that the ground state of the optical lattice can be loaded with very little excitation even for times t_r on the order of the inverse band excitation frequency.

We employ radio-frequency spectroscopy on weakly bound $^6$Li$_2$ molecules to precisely determine the molecular binding energies and the energy splittings between molecular states for different magnetic fields. These measurements allow us to extract the interaction parameters of ultracold $^6$Li atoms based on a multi-channel quantum scattering model. We determine the singlet and triplet scattering lengths to be $a_s=45.167(8)a_0$ and $a_t=-2140(18)a_0$ (1 $a_0$ = 0.0529177 nm), and the positions of the broad Feshbach resonances in the energetically lowest three $s-$wave scattering channels to be 83.41(15) mT, 69.04(5) mT, and 81.12(10) mT.

Feshbach resonances in lithium-6 were experimentally studied and theoretically analyzed. In addition to two previously known s-wave resonances, we found three p-wave resonances. Four of these resonances are narrow and yield a precise value of the singlet scattering length, but do not allow us to accurately predict the location of the broad resonance near 83 mT. Its position was previously measured in a molecule-dissociation experiment for which we, here, discuss systematic shifts.

We calculate the four-wave mixing (FWM) in a Bose-Einstein condensate system having multiple spin wave packets that are initially overlapping in physical space, but have nonvanishing relative momentum that cause them to recede from one another. Three receding condensate atom wave packets can result in production of a fourth wave packet by the process of FWM due to atom-atom interactions. We consider cases where the four final wave packets are composed of 1, 2, 3 and 4 different internal spin components. FWM with 1- or 2-spin state wave packets is much stronger than 3- or 4-spin state FWM, wherein two of the coherent moving BEC wave packets form a polarization-grating that rotates the spin projection of the third wave into that of fourth diffracted wave (as opposed to the 1- or 2-spin state case where a regular density-grating is responsible for the diffraction). We investigate the existence of quantum {\it quasi} phase transitions for an ensemble of ultracold bosons in a one-dimensional optical lattice, performing exact diagonalizations of the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian. When an external parabolic potential is added to the system {\it quasi} phase transitions are induced by the competition of on-site mean-field energy, hopping energy, and energy offset among lattice sites due to the external potential and lead to the coexistence of regions of particle localization and delocalization in the lattice. We clarify the microscopic mechanisms responsible for these {\it quasi} phase transitions as a function of the depth of the external potential when the on-site mean-field energy is large compared to the hopping energy. In particular, we show that a model Hamiltonian involving a few Fock states can describe the behavior of energy gap, mean particle numbers per site, and number fluctuations per site almost quantitatively. The role of symmetry on the gap as a function of the depth of the external trapping potential is elucidated. We discuss possible experimental signatures of {\it quasi} phase transitions studying the single particle density matrix and explain microscopically the occurrence of local maxima in the momentum distribution. We predict the presence and positions of purely-long-range bound states of $^4$He$(2s ^3S)+{}^4$He$(2p ^3P)$ near the $2s ^3S_1+2p ^3P_{0,1}$ atomic limits. The results of the full multichannel and approximate models are compared, and we assess the sensitivity of the bound states to atomic parameters characterizing the potentials. Photoassociation to these purely-long-range molecular bound states may improve the knowledge of the scattering length associated with the collisions of two ultracold spin-polarized $^4$He$(2s ^3S)$ atoms, which is important for studies of Bose-Einstein condensates., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures

The mode structure of a Bose-Einstein condensate non-adiabatically loaded into a one-dimensional optical lattice is studied by analyzing the visibility of the interference pattern as well as the radial profile of the condensate after a time-of-flight. A simple model is proposed that predicts the short-time decrease of the visibility as a function of the condensate parameters. In the radial direction, heavily damped oscillations are observed, as well as an increase in the condensate temperature. These findings are interpreted as a re-thermalization due to dissipation of the initial condensate excitations into high-lying modes., Comment: 5 pages; submitted to PRA

We measure a zero crossing in the scattering length of a mixture of the two lowest hyperfine states of 6-Li. To locate the zero crossing, we monitor the decrease in temperature and atom number arising from evaporation in a CO2 laser trap as a function of magnetic field B. The temperature decrease and atom loss are minimized for B=528(4) G, consistent with no evaporation. We also present preliminary calculations using potentials that have been constrained by the measured zero crossing and locate a broad Feshbach resonance at approximately 860 G, in agreement with previous theoretical predictions. We propose creation of a molecular Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) by loading an atomic BEC into an optical lattice and driving it into a Mott insulator (MI) with exactly two atoms per site. Molecules in a MI state are then created under well defined conditions by photoassociation with essentially unit efficiency. Finally, the MI is melted and a superfluid state of the molecules is created. We study the deterministic entanglement of a pair of neutral atoms trapped in an optical lattice by coupling to excited-state molecular hyperfine potentials. Information can be encoded in the ground-state hyperfine levels and processed by bringing atoms together pair-wise to perform quantum logical operations through induced electric dipole-dipole interactions. The possibility of executing both diagonal and exchange type entangling gates is demonstrated for two three-level atoms and a figure of merit is derived for the fidelity of entanglement. The fidelity for executing a CPHASE gate is calculated for two 87Rb atoms, including hyperfine structure and finite atomic localization. The main source of decoherence is spontaneous emission, which can be minimized for interaction times fast compared to the scattering rate and for sufficiently separated atomic wavepackets. In experiments conducted recently at MIT on Na Bose-Einstein condensates [S. Inouye et al, Nature 392, 151 (1998); J. Stenger et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 2422 (1999)], large loss rates were observed when a time-varying magnetic field was used to tune a molecular Feshbach resonance state near the state of a pair of atoms in the condensate. A collisional deactivation mechanism affecting a temporarily formed molecular condensate [see V. A. Yurovsky, A. Ben-Reuven, P. S. Julienne and C. J. Williams, Phys. Rev. A 60, R765 (1999)], studied here in more detail, accounts for the results of the slow-sweep experiments. A best fit to the MIT data yields a rate coefficient for deactivating atom-molecule collisions of 1.6e-10 cm**3/s. In the case of the fast sweep experiment, a study is carried out of the combined effect of two competing mechanisms, the three-atom (atom-molecule) or four-atom (molecule-molecule) collisional deactivation vs. a process of two-atom trap-state excitation by curve crossing [F. H. Mies, P. S. Julienne, and E. Tiesinga, Phys. Rev. A 61, 022721 (2000)].
