1. GCA-SUN: A Gated Context-Aware Swin-UNet for Exemplar-Free Counting

Abstract

Exemplar-Free Counting aims to count objects of interest without intensive annotations of objects or exemplars. To achieve this, we propose Gated Context-Aware Swin-UNet (GCA-SUN) to directly map an input image to the density map of countable objects. Specifically, a Gated Context-Aware Modulation module is designed in the encoder to suppress irrelevant objects or background through a gate mechanism and exploit the attentive support of objects of interest through a self-similarity matrix. The gate strategy is also incorporated into the bottleneck network and the decoder to highlight the features most relevant to objects of interest. By explicitly exploiting the attentive support among countable objects and eliminating irrelevant features through the gate mechanisms, the proposed GCA-SUN focuses on and counts objects of interest without relying on predefined categories or exemplars. Experimental results on the FSC-147 and CARPK datasets demonstrate that GCA-SUN outperforms state-of-the-art methods.

3. Memory-based Controllers for Efficient Data-driven Control of Soft Robots

Abstract

Controller design for soft robots is challenging due to nonlinear deformation and high degrees of freedom of flexible material. The data-driven approach is a promising solution to the controller design problem for soft robots. However, the existing data-driven controller design methods for soft robots suffer from two drawbacks: (i) they require excessively long training time, and (ii) they may result in potentially inefficient controllers. This paper addresses these issues by developing two memory-based controllers for soft robots that can be trained in a data-driven fashion: the finite memory controller (FMC) approach and the long short-term memory (LSTM) based approach. An FMC stores the tracking errors at different time instances and computes the actuation signal according to a weighted sum of the stored tracking errors. We develop three reinforcement learning algorithms for computing the optimal weights of an FMC using the Q-learning, soft actor-critic, and deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) methods. An LSTM-based controller is composed of an LSTM network where the inputs of the network are the robot's desired configuration and current configuration. The LSTM network computes the required actuation signal for the soft robot to follow the desired configuration. We study the performance of the proposed approaches in controlling a soft finger where, as benchmarks, we use the existing reinforcement learning (RL) based controllers and proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers. Our numerical results show that the training time of the proposed memory-based controllers is significantly shorter than that of the classical RL-based controllers. Moreover, the proposed controllers achieve a smaller tracking error compared with the classical RL algorithms and the PID controller.

4. Perceptual Quality Assessment for Digital Human Heads

Abstract

Digital humans are attracting more and more research interest during the last decade, the generation, representation, rendering, and animation of which have been put into large amounts of effort. However, the quality assessment of digital humans has fallen behind. Therefore, to tackle the challenge of digital human quality assessment issues, we propose the first large-scale quality assessment database for three-dimensional (3D) scanned digital human heads (DHHs). The constructed database consists of 55 reference DHHs and 1,540 distorted DHHs along with the subjective perceptual ratings. Then, a simple yet effective full-reference (FR) projection-based method is proposed to evaluate the visual quality of DHHs. The pretrained Swin Transformer tiny is employed for hierarchical feature extraction and the multi-head attention module is utilized for feature fusion. The experimental results reveal that the proposed method exhibits state-of-the-art performance among the mainstream FR metrics. The database is released at https://github.com/zzc-1998/DHHQA.

5. Mining Cross-Person Cues for Body-Part Interactiveness Learning in HOI Detection

Abstract

Human-Object Interaction (HOI) detection plays a crucial role in activity understanding. Though significant progress has been made, interactiveness learning remains a challenging problem in HOI detection: existing methods usually generate redundant negative H-O pair proposals and fail to effectively extract interactive pairs. Though interactiveness has been studied in both whole body- and part- level and facilitates the H-O pairing, previous works only focus on the target person once (i.e., in a local perspective) and overlook the information of the other persons. In this paper, we argue that comparing body-parts of multi-person simultaneously can afford us more useful and supplementary interactiveness cues. That said, to learn body-part interactiveness from a global perspective: when classifying a target person's body-part interactiveness, visual cues are explored not only from herself/himself but also from other persons in the image. We construct body-part saliency maps based on self-attention to mine cross-person informative cues and learn the holistic relationships between all the body-parts. We evaluate the proposed method on widely-used benchmarks HICO-DET and V-COCO. With our new perspective, the holistic global-local body-part interactiveness learning achieves significant improvements over state-of-the-art. 48. UiO-66-NH2-Embedded Nanofibrous Membrane for Cr(VI) Adsorption and Visible-Light Photocatalytic Reduction

Abstract

The environmental challenges caused by hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] cannot be ignored. Here, a novel oxidized PASS (OPASS)/UiO-66-NH2nanofibrous membrane (OPASS/U NM) was successfully fabricated by electrospinning and an in situ growth process and applied for the removal of Cr(VI). It is found that the OPASS/U NM exhibits high adsorption performance due to its large surface area. Meanwhile, UiO-66-NH2particles are seamlessly and uniformly embedded on the surface of the OPASS fiber, which would endow the OPASS/U NM with photocatalysis reduction performance. Thus, under visible light, the OPASS/U NM could rapidly absorb Cr(VI) and reduce it to Cr(III), and the maximum removal capacity at pH 3.0 reached 20.10 mg/g. Furthermore, a possible photocatalytic reaction mechanism for removal of Cr(VI) is proposed. The OPASS/U NM also exhibits good stability, outstanding solvent resistance, and excellent recyclability. It retains a 92% reduction efficiency even after three cycles and shows a high recovery rate (>95%). More importantly, it can endure a series of strong polar solvents such as dimethylacetamide, N-methylpyrrolidone, and N,N-dimethylformamide. This research not only offers a strategy for enhancing the removal of Cr(VI) but also introduces a composite membrane suitable for wastewater containing aggressive solvents.

Abstract

Textiles with outstanding moisture transport characteristics and excellent flammability is of vital importance for human beings. In this work, the poly(arylene sulfide sulfone)–polydopamine/polyphenylene sulfide–polydopamine/poly(arylene sulfide sulfone) (PASS‐PDA/PPS‐PDA/PASS) composite fibric with multigradient porous structures from macro to submicron levels prepared via micrometer and nanometer fibers for water transport and evaporation has been fabricated. The introduction of PDA can effectively improve the hydrophilicity of the composite membrane. Meanwhile, superhydrophobic PASS layer with beaded structure was obtained by electrospray as the inner layer. It is found that PASS‐PDA‐72 fabric exhibited outstanding water diffusion property (spreading diameter = 10.47 cm) and ultrafast the water evaporation (0.20 g h−1). Meanwhile, the beaded‐structure PASS fabrics with high hydrophobicity (water contact angle is 130°C) was selected to absorb water from the surface of human skin and transport it to the other side to evaporate quickly, giving the surface of human skin a comfortable and dry environment. What is more, the PASS‐PDA/PPS‐PDA/PASS composite membrane exhibited excellent thermal stability (Tdmax = 544°C) and flame retardancy, which will have potential for the application in the field of fire protection.
