OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of positive intervention on the anxiety and the physiological and psychological aspects among preoperative and post-surgical patients with spinal anesthesia. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A randomized trial was conducted with an intervention group (n=58) and a control group (n=59). In the intervention group, the patients were well-informed of the details during spinal anesthesia. Multiple methods were performed to control anxiety before surgery, and nurses were not allowed to discuss the condition during surgery. Anesthesiologists were invited to visit patients to avoid excessive anxiety. RESULTS: The intervention group showed lower scores of State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) (p<0.05) than the control group 24 hours post-operation. Physiological indices such as systolic blood pressure, low frequency (LF) power, high frequency (HF) power and ration of LF/HF showed better surgery recovery (p<0.05) than the control group. The length of post-anesthesia care unit stay was also significantly shortened in the intervention group (p=0.001) compared with the control group. Positive intervention may alleviate the anxiety in surgical patients receiving spinal anesthesia and improve the physiological and psychological outcomes clinically. CONCLUSIONS: Our results provide evidence indicating that proper intervention can be promoted clinically to improve the satisfaction and quality of life of patients undergoing spinal anesthesia. We present the dynamics of sessile water drops during their detachment from a superhydrophobic surface induced by ultrasound. The superhydrophobic surface not only serves as a reflector of the ultrasound emitted from the source but also reduces the adhesive force between the drop and the solid surface. The drop is subject to an acoustic radiation force in the ultrasonic field due to the nonlinear effect of the latter. By shifting the reflector upward to approach the first resonance distance, the sessile drop is first elongated in the vertical direction, with its contact line and contact angle decreasing, and finally detaches from the superhydrophobic surface when the acoustic radiation force overcomes the sum of the gravitational and adhesive forces. The acoustic radiation pressure and acoustic radiation force are calculated by solving the acoustic field with the finite element method. The results indicate that the distribution of acoustic radiation pressure provides the upward force to make the drop detach. After its detachment from the reflector, the drop undergoes vertical vibration accompanied by shape oscillations. Oscillations of a water drop that is pinned on the reflector are also demonstrated. Single-axis acoustic levitation of substances, such as foam, water, polymer, and aluminum, is achieved by employing various liquids as the sound reflectors. The interaction of acoustic levitation field with liquid reflecting surface is investigated theoretically by considering the deformation of the liquid surface under acoustic radiation pressure. Numerical calculations indicate that the deformation degree of the reflecting surface shows a direct proportion to the acoustic radiation power. Appropriate deformation is beneficial whereas excessive deformation is unfavorable to enhance the levitation capability. Typically, the levitation capability with water reflector is smaller than that with the concave rigid reflector but slightly larger than that with the planar rigid reflector at low emitter vibration intensity. It is previously predicted that the equilibrium shape of a rotating liquid drop evolves from the axisymmetric to the two-, three-, and four-lobed morphologies as the angular velocity increases. Although the two- and three-lobed shape bifurcations have been observed in experiments, the four-lobed equilibrium shape is scarcely reported. Here, we investigate the multiple-lobed shape bifurcations of rotating drops by using acoustic levitation, and in particular, follow the evolution of the four-lobed equilibrium shape. A new shape family of rotating drops characterized by five-lobed bifurcation is also observed, which is unexpected in the theoretical predictions. A numerical method is employed to simulate the shape evolution of acoustically levitated and rotating drops. And the results validate the existence of bifurcation point shifts among all the lobed-shape families due to the initial drop flattening induced by the acoustic radiation pressure, which plays a decisive role in the emergence of the five-lobed shape. The temperature-dependent physical conditions for single-axis acoustic levitation are theoretically analyzed with consideration of the deviation of the actual acoustic field from the plane standing wave approximation. The effects of temperature variation on the resonant conditions, levitation force and threshold pressures p[sub m] (the minimum entrapping pressure) and p[sub M] (the maximum pressure to keep the integration of a liquid drop) are discussed by assuming a quasi-static heating and cooling process. The first resonant spacing H[sub 1] between the reflector and emitter is larger than that predicted for plane standing waves, and its temperature dependence comes mainly from the variation of wavelength, which is proportional to T[sup ½]. The maximum levitation force F[sub M] has a drastic decreasing tendency with temperature rise due to its sensitivity to the ratios of the geometric parameters to wavelength. For the containerless processing of water and the Pb-Sn eutectic alloy, p[sub m] decreases whereas p[sub M] increases with the enhancement of temperature, which narrows the allowed pressure range for the safe and stable levitation of the processed drops at higher temperatures. As an experimental application of these analyses, the acoustically levitated water and the Pb-Sn eutectic alloy melt are highly undercooled by up to 24 and 38 K, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Here the transcriptome and differential gene expression in the adult brain and gonads of the Chinese sea perch Lateolabrax maculatus were reported. A total of 78 256 909 clean reads were generated from the adult brain, ovary and testis by using the Illumina HiSeq2000 platform and assembled into 274 909 contigs. A total of 31 683 unigenes were annotated based on sequence similarity and 20 702 unigenes were found to exhibit 8237 gene ontology terms and 3888 signal pathways. Transcripts of 26 623 unigenes were present in all of the tissues, whereas pairwise comparisons revealed that 671/367, 496/315 and 1668/580 unigenes were up-down regulated by at least two-fold between the brain and ovary, ovary and testis and brain and testis, respectively. Homology search led to the identification of reproduction-associated genes of the brain-gonad axis, including those involved in sex differentiation and maintenance. The data provided an integrated and comprehensive transcriptome resource for L. maculatus, which could be used for further research on hypothalamus-pituitary-gonad axis gene function, reproduction regulation and sex-biased gene expression.
