Background: Hearing loss is the most commoncongenital defect worldwide and seen in every 1-3 of 1000 live births. In thisstudy, we aimed to determine risk factors for hearing loss in babies admittedto Hearing Screening Unit and to investigate the impact of these risk factorson the screening test results.Material and Method: This cross-sectional study wasconducted with 253 babies who underwent hearing screening test at Adana NumuneResearch and Training Hospital between 1 March 2014 and 30 April 2014. Astructured questionnaire form was prepared and applied to the mothers’of these babies with face-to-face interviews and the results of the TransientEvoked Oto-acoustic Emissions (TEOAE) and the Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR)tests were recorded. Chi-square, Mann-Whitney U test and LRA were used for dataanalysis. Results: Mean age of 253 babies was29.1±45.3 days. Analyses revealed that ratio of failure from the test increasedas age of the baby increased (Z= –4.503, p=0.000). Likelihood of failing from hearingtest increased as ratio of vaccination against influenza during pregnancy (OR=4.380, p=0.036), ratio of experiencing a systemic disease during pregnancy (OR= 6.942, p=0.008) and ratio of baby'sstaying icteric for a long time (OR=4.198, p=0.040) increased as the result of analysis of some variables whichinfluence failing from the test using LRA.Conclusion: The babies who carry risk factorsshould be determined beside the necessity of undergoing hearing screening testfor every newborn. Hearing loss should be detected in the early period, becausethese children may achieve speech, cognitive, social and emotional developmentclose to their peers through providing an early and proper hearing device andcommencing regular hearing rehabilitation programs., Amaç: İşitme kaybı, 1000 canlı doğumda 1-3 insidansla enyaygın görülen doğumsal defekttir. Analizlere göre; bebeğin yaşı arttıkça işitme tarama testlerinden kalmaoranı artmaktadır (Z= –4.503, p=0.000). İşitme taramatestinden kalma durumunu etkileyen bazı değişkenlerin LRA ile incelenmesisonucunda annenin gebelikte grip aşısı yaptırmaoranı (OR= 4.380, p=0.036), annenin gebelik sırasında sistemikhastalığı geçirme oranı (OR= 6.942,p=0.008) ve bebeğin uzun süreli sarılık durumu yaşama oranı (OR= 4.198, p=0.040) arttıkça işitmetestinden kalma ihtimalinin arttığı bulundu. Sonuç:Yeni doğan her bebekte işitme taramasıyapılması gerekliliğinin yanı sıra risk faktörü taşıyan bebeklerbelirlenmelidir. İşitme kaybı erken dönemde saptanmalıdır çünkü erken dönemdetanı konarak uygun işitme cihazı sağlanması ve erken dönemde düzenli işitselrehabilitasyon programlarına başlanmasıyla bu çocuklar normal işitenakranlarına yakın düzeyde konuşma-dil gelişimi, bilişsel, sosyal ve duygusalgelişim gösterebilirler.

Amaç: Ses Handikap Endeksi (SHE) Türkçe versiyonunun güvenilirliği ve geçerliliği araştırıldı, uygulama kolaylığı sağlayacak kısa bir SHE versiyonu geliştirildi. Hastalar ve Yöntemler: Orijinal Voice Handicap Index 10 KBB uzmanı tarafından Türkçeye çevrildi, daha sonra bir dilbilimci tarafından İngilizceye geri çevrildi, son olarak üç kişiden oluşan değerlendirme komisyonu tarafından çeviri metnine son şekli verildi. Türkçeye çevrilen anket 220 denekten oluşan bir gruba 7-14 gün arayla iki kez uygulandı; deneklerin verdikleri yanıtlara göre güvenilirlik ve geçerlilik analizleri yapıldı. Bulgular: İç tutarlılık güvenilirliği ileri derecede anlamlı bulundu (Cronbach alfa=0.97). Test-tekrar test korelasyon katsayısı toplam skor için 0.93 bulundu. Faktör analizi sonucunda toplam varyansın %64.8’ini açıklayan üç faktör elde edildi. Düzeltilmiş maddetoplam korelasyon katsayıları 0.50-0.80 arasında değişiyordu. Düzeltilmiş madde-toplam korelasyon katsayılarına göre en güçlü 10 madde (E7, E9, Fi10, F11, F12, E15, F16, Fi18, Fi20 ve E29) seçilerek kısa versiyon SHE geliştirildi. Sonuç: Ses Handikap Endeksi Türkçe versiyonunda bazı maddelerin sorunlu olması nedeniyle, kliniklerde kısa versiyon Türkçe SHE’nin kullanılması daha uygundur., Objectives: We investigated the reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the Voice Handicap Index (VHI), and developed a short VHI form that would be more practical. Patients and Methods: the original VHI was translated to Turkish by 10 otolaryngologists, then it was translated back to English by a linguist, and the final text was prepared by the evaluation committee composed of three members. the translated version was administered to a group of 220 subjects twice with 7-14 days intervals. Based on the responses, statistical analyses were performed to assess its reliability and validity. Results: Internal consistency reliability was found to be highly significant (Cronbach‘s alpha=0.97). Test-retest correlation coefficient was 0.93 for the total score. the factor analysis yielded three factors explaining 64.8% of the total variance. the corrected item-total correlation coefficients ranged from 0.50 to 0.80. the 10 most robust VHI items, namely, E7, E9, P10, F11, F12, E15, F16, P18, P20 and E29, were selected using the corrected itemtotal correlation coefficients, and a shortened form of the Turkish VHI was developed. Conclusion: As some items are thought to be contentious in the Turkish VHI, the short form of the Turkish VHI is more suitable for use in clinics.

Effüzyonlu otoitis media?lı hastalarda ventilasyon tüpü takılmasının komplikasyonlarından biri de miringosklerozdur. Kulak zarında meydana gelen miringoskleroz işitme kaybına neden olabilmektedir. Miringosklerozun önlenmesi bu açıdan önemlidir. Miringosekleroz gelişiminde, orta kulak kavitesinde gelişen hiperoksik durum nedeniyle artan serbest oksijen radikalleri ve mekanik hasarlanmanın asıl neden olabileceği gösterilmiştir. Çalışmamızın amacı antioksidan bir madde olan Epigallokateşin-3-gallat (EGCG)?ın miringosklerozu önlemedeki rolünü araştırmaktır.Bu çalışmada 18 adet rat rastgele üç gruba ayrıldı. Gruplardaki bütün ratların bilateral kulak zarlarına miringotomi uygulanıp 1. gruba herhangi bir tedavi verilmedi. 2. gruptaki ratlara intraperitoneal olarak serum fizyolojik, 3. gruptaki ratlara ise intraperitoneal olarak EGCG verildi. İşlem sonrasında ratların bullaları çıkarıldı. Ayrıca ratların dekapitasyon sırasında intra kardiyak olarak kanlarıda alındı. Her bir grubtaki miringoskleroz derecesi önce vizüel sonra histopatolojik olarak değerlendirildi. Alınan kanlarda Malondialdehid (MDA), Süperoksit dismutaz (SOD), Katalaz (CAT) ve Glutatyon peroksidaz (GPX) düzeylerine bakıldı. EGCG verilen grupta miringoskleroz (MS) vizüel ve histopatolojik olarak diğer gruplara göre anlamlı derecede düşük bulundu (P< 0,005). EGCG verilen grupta MDA, SOD, ve CAT düzeyleri arasında diğer gruplara göre anlamlı farklar bulundu (P0,05).Sonuç olarak antioksidan bir madde olan EGCG?nin miringotomi uygulanan kulaklarda miringoskleroz gelişimini önlediği ve antioksidan enzimler üzerinde olumlu etkileri olduğu ortaya konulmuştur. One of the complications of the ventilation tube insertion in patients with otitis mediawith effusion is myringosclerosis. The prevention of myringosclerosis is important because it can cause hearing loss. The pathogenesis of myringosclerosis might be due to an increased production of O2 derived free radicals as an outcome of a hyperoxic condition and mechanical damage in the middle ear cavity. Aim of our study is to evaluate the protective effect of Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) as an antioxidant on myringosclerosis.In this study, 18 rats were divided into 3 groups randomly. After myringotomy of all of rats, group 1 was left untreated. Intraperitoneal saline was given to group 2 and intraperitoneal EGCG was given to group 3. After the processing, the bullas of rats were removed. Also intracardiac blood were taken during decapitation. The grade of myringosclerosis in all of the groups was evaluated visually and histopathological. Malondialdehyde (MDA), Superoxide dismutase (SOD), Catalase (CAT) and Glutathione peroxidase (GPX) levels were looked at blood samples.The grade of myringosclerosis (MS) was significantly more lower in EGCG group than other groups (P< 0,005). MDA, SOD and CAT levels were significantly different in EGCG group than others (P< 0,005). GPX levels were not significantly different in all groups (P>0,05).In conclusion; we showed that EGCG as an antioxidant has a preventive role in the development of myringosclerosis in the experimental animal model after myringotomy and a positive effect on antioxidant enzymes. 52

The frequency of hearing loss is generally 1 or 2?in 1000 live births.The existence of approximately 60 elements in total was detected in the tissue and humor of the living oraganism whose main structure is consisted of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, azote, phosphorus and sulphur. These elements which ensure the continuity of body functions by joining physiological and biochemical reactions and which are necessary for the organism to continue its normal life are called trace elements.So far, rare-earth elements have been associated with hearing loss as well as with many diseases. Copper (Cu), zinc (Zn) and selenium (Se) are the rare-earth elements which are found in the central nervous system of a high percentage and are necessary for the normal brain functions.There are many studies which indicate that low hearing or a change in hearing physiology or functional disorders in other central or peripheric nervous system occur in the lack of copper, zinc and selenium.In light of the foregoing we wanted to carry out a research into whether there was a change in the levels of blood, copper, zinc and selenium among the patients who had sensorineural hering loss. 61
