The food supply chain is characterised by its complexity and interconnectedness, involving various actors, from farmers to consumers. It emphasises the critical importance of maintaining product integrity, safety, and quality throughout the process to meet stringent regulatory standards and consumer expectations. However, food supply chain is plagued by challenges such as counterfeiting, quality issues, and safety concerns, prompting the adoption of product traceability as a remedy. Current traceability systems (e.g., systems based on centralised and EPCIS architectures) aim to capture traceability data from the initial link to the final link in the supply chain, allowing for tracing a product from the end consumer back to its origin. Nevertheless, trust issues persist in these systems, particularly concerning the integrity and reliability of traceability data. Blockchain has been proposed to address these trust issues by creating an immutable and transparent ledger distributed across all peers. Despite this innovation, different studies underscore the inadequacy of relying solely on blockchain to ensure the trustworthiness of traceability data. This paper addresses this gap by proposing an adaptable and extensible framework that combines blockchain with a multi-trust packages-based trust model. The framework seeks to strengthen trust relationships among supply chain actors by improving the accuracy of identifying specific areas within the supply chain where compromises in quality and safety have occurred.

This study assessed the prevalence, awareness of risk factors, and prevention and treatment of hypercholesterolemia among adults who visited Woldia referral hospital, Northeast Ethiopia.Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among adults who visited Woldia referral hospital from May to August 2022. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire through a face-to-face interview and patient medical record review. Logistic regression analysis was employed to determine the association between hypercholesterolemia and other variables. A p-value at a 95% confidence level was statistically significant.Results: A total of 1180 eligible adults were included in the study. The magnitude of hypercholesterolemia was 26.4%. The majority of the respondents were aware of some risk factors, such as higher fat intake (82.3%), obesity (67.2%), and lack of adequate exercise (56.1%). However, the majority of the respondents were not aware that smoking, alcohol consumption, and age (86.8% for all) had cardiovascular risk. The majority of the respondents were aware that eating a limited amount of saturated fat (56.5%), maintaining a healthy weight (67.2%), and taking prescribed medications properly (86.8%) can prevent the risk of hypercholesterolemia. However, a larger proportion of respondents were unaware that smoking cessation (86.8%), exercise (55.3%), alcohol restriction (86.8%), and stress avoidance (75.3%) can prevent cardiovascular risks. Age (p = 0.036), smoking (p = 0.007), alcohol use (p = 0.013), fruit consumption (p = 0.019), saturated oil use (p = 0.031), level of physical activity (p < 0.001), and body mass index (p = 0.03) were significantly associated with hypercholesterolemia.Conclusion: This study concluded that more than one-fourth of adults had hypercholesterolemia. The majority of the respondents did not have an awareness of common cardiovascular risk factors and prevention and treatment techniques regarding unhealthy lifestyles and physical inactivity.Keywords: hypercholesterolemia, cholesterol, dyslipidemia, awareness, prevention, risk factors

AbstractIntercropping of cereals and legumes is common in Ethiopia. However, intercropping of lupine with tef is a new practice in Northwestern Ethiopia’s tef-based cropping system. In the 2016 and 2017 main cropping seasons, a field experiment was conducted in Gozamin District, East Gojjam Zone, to assess the effect of plant density of lupine intercropping with tef on the productivity of tef fields. The two experimental factors were two inter-row spacings (20 and 40 cm) and three intra-row spacings (10, 15, and 20 cm) of lupine intercropped with tef, and their factorial combination was studied using a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The highest tef grain yield (1.80 t ha−1) was recorded from 40 and 20 cm inter- and intra-row spacing of lupine intercropped with tef, respectively. The highest lupine yield (2.74 t ha−1) was recorded from sole cropping. A total of 40 and 15 cm inter- and intra-row spacing of lupine intercropped with tef improved tef equivalent yield (2.32 t ha−1), area time equivalent ratio (1.09), actual yield loss (0.87), monetary advantage index (396.2 USD), net benefit (2479.5 USD ha−1), and marginal rate of return (MRR) (682%). Among all planting densities, 40 and 15 cm inter- and intra-row spacing of lupine were the most profitable and had the highest yield advantage based on equivalent yield and other economic benefits. To maximize the productivity of tef fields, 40 cm of inter- and 15 cm of intra-row spacing of lupine intercropping with tef was recommended.

Doping in sports is increasing and diversifying involving physiological, mechanical, and pharmacological techniques and becoming a serious public health problem. Pharmacy professionals have a vital role in the fight against doping. This study assessed the knowledge, attitude, and practice of pharmacists on the use of doping agents by sportsmen and women.Methods: A community-based cross-sectional descriptive study was done targeting community pharmacists of Dessie city, Northeast Ethiopia. Structured questionnaires were distributed and collected between April and March of 2018. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 20.0. Linear regression was used and the level of statistical significance was set at a p-value < 0.05.Results: Of the 61 pharmacy professionals who participated in the study, 46 (75.4%) were males and 15 (24.6%) were females. Only 25 (41.0%) and 13 (21.3%) of the respondents said they watch and play sport regularly, respectively. The majority of the participants, 50 (82%), supported the prohibition of performance-enhancing drugs in sport. The majority of the respondents, 55.7%, agree that pharmacists are a potential source of doping agents. Only 27.9% of them mentioned World Anti-doping Agency (WADA) as the source of information about doping agents. Regarding identifying the WADA status of 13 agents, the average score out of 13 was 4.95, while 80.3% of them scored less than or equal to seven. Factors associated with knowledge of participants were being male (β = 4.48, p= 0.02) and regularly watching sport (β = 2.64, p= 0.01).Conclusion: Even though the pharmacists’ low knowledge score revealed that they need further specialized training on doping and anti-doping, majority of them support banning doping substances from sport. Agronomic strategies such as choosing the optimal row ratio and planting legume crops at the right time are crucial for enhancing crop productivity. A field experiment was conducted in 2016 and 2017 to assess the influence of plant density and lupine intercropping time on tef field productivity. The treatments were as follows: tef was planted at a 20 cm inter-row spacing, lupine was sown at 20 and 40 cm inter-row spacing (row ratio of 1 tef: 1 lupine and 2 tef: 1 lupine) and lupine intercropped three times (1, 2, and 3 weeks after tef planting). Randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 3 replications were used. Two sole tef and lupine were planted. The results revealed 40 cm inter-row spacing and delayed lupine intercropping (3 weeks after tef planting) provided the maximum tef grain yield of 1.80 t ha−1. The sole cropping of lupine produced the highest lupine grain yield (2.63 t ha−1). Lupine intercropping at 40 cm inter-row spacing and two weeks after tef planting resulted in the highest land equivalent ratio (1.54), tef equivalent yield (2.45 t ha−1), area time equivalent ratio (1.11), system productivity index (2.5), monetary advantage index (15206 birr ha−1), net benefit (65109 birr ha−1), and marginal rate of return (602%). Therefore, farmers in the northwest Ethiopian highlands should consider intercropping lupine two weeks after tef planting in-between two rows of tef as an effective intercropping system.

Abstract Background Diarrhea, defined as three or more loose stool per day, is a major cause of child mortality. Exploring its prevalence, and influencing factors is crucial for public health decision and targeted interventions. This study aimed to investigate these aspects using 2021 Madagascar demographic health survey data. Method This study employed a cross-sectional design, analyzing data from a total of 8,740 weighted under-five children. The dependent variable was the occurrence of diarrhea, which was measured based on caregiver-reported incidents within the previous two weeks prior to the survey. To identify factors associated with diarrhea, a multilevel logistic regression model was utilized, allowing for the examination of both individual and contextual factors. Statistical significance was determined at a p-value of less than 0.05. Results The analysis identified several significant factors associated with diarrhea in children under five. Abstract Background Cervical cancer is a leading cause of cancer mortality globally, especially in Africa, including Ethiopia. This review assesses predictors of cervical cancer screening uptake among Ethiopian-eligible women using the Health Belief Model. Higher education levels, perceived susceptibility, severity, and fewer barriers are associated with increased screening. Effective HBM-based interventions could enhance screening rates, potentially reducing cervical cancer incidence and mortality. Objective The review aimed to synthesize the existing literature on the prevalence of Cervical Cancer Screening Service Uptake and Associated Factors among Eligible Women using the Health belief model in Ethiopia, 2024. Method This systematic review and meta-analysis searched Google Scholar, PubMed, and the Cochrane Library engine. Key terms such as "Cervical cancer screening", "uptake", "utilization", "factors", "barriers", and "Ethiopia" were used to identify relevant articles. Data extraction utilized a detailed form, and the methodological quality of each study was assessed using the JBI quality appraisal checklist for cross-sectional studies. Statistical analysis was conducted using STATA version 17, and the meta-analysis findings were presented using forest plots and tables. Result The result of seven studies revealed that the overall prevalence of Cervical Cancer Screening Service Uptake among eligible women in Ethiopia was 21% (95% CI: 15%-27%). Factors independently associated with Cancer Screening Service Uptake included: Knowledge (OR = 4.563, 95% CI: 1.012–4.188), age 30 up to 49 (OR = 4.106, 95% CI: 1.562–6.650), history of STD (OR = 2.59, 95% CI: 1.694–4.486), high perceived susceptibility (OR = 3.814, 95% CI: 2.312–5.316), high perceived severity (OR = 2.603, 95% CI: 2.203–3.003), low perceived barrier (OR = 4.390, 95% CI: 1.331–8.449), high perceived self-efficacy (OR = 4.77, 95% CI: 4.102–5.431), high perceived benefit (OR = 3.67, 95% CI: 1.851–5.489), and education level greater than primary level (OR = 4.497, 95% CI: 3.619–5.375). Conclusion Cervical cancer is a major public health challenge in Ethiopia. Consequently, there is a pressing need for the governments to formulate comprehensive, multi-sectorial policies and strategies. These initiatives should be designed to address the problem influenced by interconnected factors, to reduce the prevalence of cervical cancer in Ethiopia.

Abstract Introduction Fertility refers to the biological capacity to reproduce and have children. It is a key aspect of reproductive health influenced by various factors. Therefore, this study aims to explore the determinants of fertility rates based on urban and rural settings in Ethiopia. Method A stratified two-stage cluster sampling approach was used, employing data from the 2019 Ethiopian Mini Demographic and Health Survey ( https://dhsprogram.com ). The study comprised 8,885 women aged 15 to 49 years. The study employed Stata 17, and the data was described using descriptive statistics. Associations were examined using decomposition analysis and negative binomial regression. The Incidence Rate Ratio and p-value were used to determine the statistical significance of the variables examined. Results The negative binomial regression found that factors such as maternal age (IRR, 1.08, P-value,0.00), living in rural (IRR,1.09, P-value,0.00), being Muslim (IRR,1.13, P-value,0.00), being from other religious groups (IRR,1.16, P-value,0.00), having six up to nine household members (IRR,1.24, P-value,0.00), having greater than nine household member(IRR,1.14, P-value,0.04), having one child under five year (IRR,1.35, P-value,0.00), having two children under five year (IRR,1.77, P-value,0.00), and having more than two under five years (IRR,1.99, P-value,0.00), being currently pregnant (IRR,1.08, P-value,0.00), use of contraceptive(IRR,1.13, P-value,0.00) are positively associated with bearing more children. On the other hand, completing primary education (IRR,0.84, P-value,0.00), secondary education (IRR,0.61, P-value,0.00), being from the richest household (IRR = 0.94, P-value,0.00), and being single/divorced and widowed (IRR,0.49, P-value,0.00) are negatively associated with having more children because their IRR is less than one. The decomposition analysis also demonstrated that marital status has a stronger negative correlation with fertility in rural compared to urban settings. Additionally, the number of children under five exerts a greater influence on fertility in urban areas. Conclusion the study found significant rural-urban differences in the factors shaping fertility in Ethiopia. While demographics like maternal age, education, and wealth influenced fertility in both settings, the relationships varied in nature and magnitude. To address this, Policymakers should develop targeted fertility programs that address the unique needs and challenges faced by rural and urban populations.

Abstract Background Malaria continues a significant public health challenge in Ethiopia, with Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs) proving effective in reducing transmission. Despite their effectiveness, consistent LLIN utilization is influenced by various factors. While previous research has quantitatively analyzed LLIN ownership and usage, there is a lack of in-depth examination of the behavioral, sociocultural, socioeconomic, and distribution-related factors affecting their sustained use. This study aimed to explore barriers to persistent LLIN use among communities in northwest Ethiopia. Methods The study area found in Northwest Ethiopia, specifically in East Belessa District, is located at 12° 14’ 60.00” N latitude and 37° 44’ 59.99” E longitude, with an altitude between 1,200 and 1,800 m above sea level. Thirty-nine community members from five focus group discussions, along with five key informants, were interviewed between February 1st and 30th, 2020, about their use of Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs). An interpretive description approach was employed to explore local contexts and factors affecting LLIN utilization. Focus group participants were selected based on residency status, pregnancy, caretaking of under-five children, and experience with LLINs. Key informants included health extension workers and the woreda malaria officer. Data were organized and analyzed using Open Code Version 4.03 software, with coding and theme identification conducted accordingly. Results All 44 community members from the five focus group discussions and the five key informants participated fully in the study. The study categorized its findings into three main themes: knowledge of malaria and Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLIN) use, perception of malaria threat, and barriers to sustained LLIN utilization. It identified factors spanning individual, socio-cultural, institutional, and socio-economic realms that impede consistent LLIN usage. Key hindrances include cultural misinterpretations, discomfort from heat and bed bugs, diverse net shapes, insufficient sleeping spaces, lack of awareness, inadequate distribution, neglect of vulnerable groups, misuse of non-sleeping purposes, hesitancy to hang nets, and restricted accessibility. Conclusions This study reveals that practical concerns, including inadequate access to LLINs, distribution issues, discomfort from net shape and warmth, and unintended uses for non-malaria purposes, impact LLIN utilization. Socio-cultural norms, housing conditions, and varied understanding of malaria also contribute to inconsistent LLIN use. Strategies like providing compatible nets and comprehensive education could improve the Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets program’s effectiveness in the area.

Abstract Background Road traffic accidents (RTAs) are a pressing public health issue in Ethiopia, exacerbated by rapid urbanization and motorization. Despite efforts, escalating rates persist due to various factors like human behavior and road infrastructure deficiencies. This study addresses the need for comprehensive data on RTAs in Ethiopia, aiming to uncover socioeconomic and behavioral factors to inform evidence-based policies. Methods A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted from March to April 2024, adhering to PRISMA guidelines. Major databases like Google Scholar, PubMed, and the Cochrane Library were searched using specific keywords related to RTAs and Ethiopia. Studies conducted between 2014 and 2024 were included, with eligibility criteria. Data extraction followed a standardized Microsoft Excel format. Study quality was assessed using the JBI checklist, with high-quality articles included. Statistical analysis, conducted using STATA version 17, included descriptive analysis, forest plots for RTA prevalence, and examination of publication bias using Egger and Begs tests. Subgroup analysis and meta-regression explored moderating factors and sources of heterogeneity. Results The systematic review identified eight studies meeting inclusion criteria, conducted between 2014 and 2022. RTA prevalence was 36% (95% CI: 23; 49). Sensitivity analysis confirmed the robustness of the estimated prevalence. Publication bias was detected via Egger’s test, though Begg’s test was non-significant. Meta-regression found no significant influence of publication year or sample size on RTA prevalence. Socioeconomic factors like income level and driving experience, alongside behavioral factors like traffic rule violations and substance use, were identified as key drivers of RTAs in Ethiopia. Conclusions The study highlights the significant burden of road traffic accidents in Ethiopia, influenced by socioeconomic and behavioral factors. Socioeconomic factors such as income level and driving experience, along with behavioral factors like traffic rule violations and substance use, emerged as prominent determinants of RTAs. Policymakers should prioritize evidence-based interventions targeting these factors to improve road safety nationwide.

Abstract Background Cervical cancer is a significant global health challenge, with the majority of cases and deaths occurring in low-resource regions like sub-Saharan Africa including Ethiopia. Women living with HIV (WLHIV) in this area face a six-fold higher risk of cervical cancer compared to women living without HIV Both the availability of screening services and their utilization remain low, particularly among WLHIV, hindering efforts to reduce the cervical cancer burden in this vulnerable population. Objective This study aimed to synthesize the current research on the prevalence of cervical cancer screening utilization and the associated factors among women living with HIV in Ethiopia. Method We conducted a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis, searching databases such as Google Scholar, PubMed, and the Cochrane Library for relevant studies published from 2015 up to 2023 and the search period for these relevant articles was from April 1 up to April 30, 2024. Data from included studies was extracted, organized in Excel, and then analyzed using STATA 17. The overall effect across all studies was calculated using a random-effect model. Potential publication bias and heterogeneity in the results between studies were assessed using Egger’s test, forest plot, and I² statistic, respectively. Result According to the systematic review and meta-analysis, the overall prevalence of cervical cancer screening utilization among women living with HIV in Ethiopia was 24% (17 − 32%). Several factors were independently associated with cervical cancer screening utilization, including age (40–49) years (OR = 3.95, 95% CI: 3.307–4.595), age (18–29) years (OR = 5.021, 95% CI: 1.563–9.479), education level greater than college (OR = 3.293, 95% CI: 1.835–4.751), having good knowledge (OR = 3.421, 95% CI: 2.928–3.915), early initiation of sexual intercourse (OR = 3.421, 95% CI: 2.928–3.915), awareness of cervical cancer (OR = 3.551, 95% CI: 2.945–4.157), having information about cancer (OR = 3.671, 95% CI: 2.606–4.736), CD4 count less than 500 cell/mm3 (OR = 4.001, 95% CI: 1.463–6.539), government employee (OR = 5.921, 95% CI: 1.767–10.076), and perceived susceptibility (OR = 2.950, 95% CI: 2.405–3.496). Conclusion This systematic review and meta-analysis show that the pooled prevalence of cervical cancer screening rates among Women living with HIV in Ethiopia is notably low, at only 24%. Factors influencing service utilization include age, education level, knowledge about cervical cancer, early sexual initiation, awareness of the disease itself, and HIV-related conditions. To enhance screening rates, interventions must target these factors and address systemic healthcare deficiencies.

Abstract Background The way the healthcare delivery system is reflected by patient satisfaction. Establishing a health system with better results depends on it. It has been assumed that higher patient satisfaction levels correlate with quality healthcare outcomes. There is little national data to support patient satisfaction with inpatient health services in Ethiopia. In order to estimate the pooled proportion of patient satisfaction and determine the associated factors with inpatient health services at public hospitals, a systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted. Methods The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines were followed in the extraction of the data. To get the included studies, the following electronic databases were searched: Pub-Med, Google Scholar, Med-Line, Web of Science, Scopus and Repositories. Software called STATA version 17 was used to analyze statistical data using the random effects model. Forest plots were used to display the pooled results. Results Of the 1583 records resulted in electronic databases searching, 11 studies with 3,958 participants were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. The estimated pooled proportion of patient satisfaction with inpatient health services was found to be 57.4% (95% CI: 50.88–64.59, I 2 = 95.25%). Assuring privacy for patients (OR = 7.44, 95% CI: 3.63–15.25, I 2 = 0.0%), availability of direction signs (2.96, 95% CI: 1.91–4.57, I 2 = 0.0%), providing adequate information (OR = 3.27, 95% CI: 1.63–6,58, I 2 = 65.60%), history of previous admission (OR = 0.29, 0.18–0.46, I 2 = 86.36%) and providing on time treatment (OR = 1.63, 95% CI: 1.21–2.20, I 2 = 86.36%) were statistically significant factors associated with patient satisfaction with inpatient health services. Conclusion The estimated pooled level of patient satisfaction with inpatient health services is low in Ethiopia. A higher level of patient satisfaction with inpatient health treatments was predicted by factors such as privacy assurance, fast services, availability of direction signs, provision of services with adequate information transfer, and no history of previous admission. To improve patient satisfaction, the Ministry of Health and hospital administration must place a strong emphasis on ensuring the provision of high-quality, standard-based inpatient healthcare.

Abstract Background Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global public health concern that is fueled by the overuse of antimicrobial agents. Low- and middle-income countries, including those in Africa,. Point prevalence surveys (PPS) have been recognized as valuable tools for assessing antimicrobial utilization and guiding quality improvement initiatives. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the prescription rates, indications, and quality of antimicrobial use in African health facilities. Methods A comprehensive search was conducted in multiple databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Hinari (Research4Life) and Google Scholar. Studies reporting the point prevalence of antimicrobial prescription or use in healthcare settings using validated PPS tools were included. The quality of the studies was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal checklist. A random-effects meta-analysis was conducted to combine the estimates. Abstract Background Cervical cancer, ranking as the fourth most common gynecological cancer worldwide, claimed an estimated 570,000 lives and resulted in 311,000 new cases in 2018. This disease disproportionately affects those living in poverty and is more prevalent in countries with weak healthcare systems. Low and middle-income nations, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, face higher incidence and mortality rates due to limited access to vaccines, screening, and treatment. The world health organization recommends regular screening for women from age 25, setting a 90-70-90 target for low- and middle-income countries by 2030. Despite limited previous knowledge, the study aims to assess the pooled prevalence of cervical cancer screening practices and associated factors among female healthcare professionals in Ethiopia in 2024. Objective The study aimed to synthesize the existing literature on cervical cancer screening practice and associated factors among female health workers in Ethiopia. Methods Studies were searched through the search engine of Google Scholar, PubMed, and Cochrane Library. Searching was made using Keywords/ MeSH terms Cervical cancer; utilization; Preventive practice. Heterogeneity was assessed using the Cochran Q test and I2 statistics. A random-effects model with a 95% confidence interval was used for the pooled prevalence and odds ratio estimations. Result Seven studies were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. The overall pooled prevalence of cervical cancer screening practice among female health workers in Ethiopia was 18%. Conclusion The implementation of preventive measures for cervical cancer screening was found to be suboptimal. Our findings underscore the importance of enhancing awareness among this demographic, which is crucial in mobilizing local communities. It is imperative to provide continuous education to female health workers regarding cervical cancer. The Ministry of Health should collaborate with various organizations to ensure the accessibility of cost-effective screening services in all healthcare facilities.

Abstract Background Dental caries (decay or cavities) is the breakdown of teeth as a result of bacteria. Dental caries is one of the most preventable oral health problems and the most common chronic disease in primary school children. Poor dental and oral health affects the quality of children’s lives. Objectives The study aimed to synthesize the existing literature on the prevalence and associated factors of dental caries among primary school children in Ethiopia in 2024. Methodology Studies were searched through the search engines of Google Scholar, PubMed, Scopus, MEDLINE, and the Cochrane Library. Searching was made using keywords and MeSH terms for dental caries, dental plaque, primary school children, and Ethiopia. Heterogeneity was assessed using the Cochran Q test and I2 statistics. A random-effects model with a 95% confidence interval was used for prevalence and odds ratio estimations. Result The result of seven studies disclosed that the overall prevalence of dental caries in primary school children in Ethiopia was 35% (26–45%). high intake of sweets (OR = 2.71,95%CI:1.968–3.451), a poor habit of tooth cleaning (OR = 2.46; 95% CI: 2.761–5.045), Grade level 1–4(OR = 2.46; 95% CI: 1.523–3.397), having a history of toothache(OR = 2.99; 95% CI: 2.679–3.314), absence of toothpaste use(OR = 1.42; 95% CI: -1.278-4.109), reduction of the previous year’s academic score(OR = 5.51; 95% CI: 1.952–9.066), had a significant microbial load(OR = 3.82, CI: 3.439–4.192) and have acid bacillary pH on their teeth(OR = 2.42, CI: 1.494–3.335) were independent variables associated with dental carries among primary school children. Conclusion The overall prevalence of dental caries among primary school children in Ethiopia is 35%, ranging from 26 to 45%. However, variations in prevalence rates are observed based on sampling techniques. Studies using simple random sampling report a higher prevalence rate of 42%, while those employing multi-stage random sampling and systematic random sampling show lower rates of 30% and 35%, respectively. This indicates that the choice of sampling technique can impact reported prevalence rates, with simple random sampling yielding higher estimates compared to other methods.

BackgroundOptimal medication adherence is vital for the successful implementation of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in managing HIV infection. Global efforts aim to minimize the burden of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), including HIV-associated drug resistance.MethodsThis systematic review and meta-analysis followed PRISMA guidelines and searched multiple databases for eligible studies published until July 10, 2023. Eligible studies focused on Ethiopians receiving HAART, reported the prevalence of optimal adherence, and used appropriate assessment tools. Quality of included studies was assessed using JBI checklists A weighted inverse variance random-effects model was applied to calculate the pooled prevalence.ResultsOur meta-analysis aimed to determine the pooled prevalence of optimum Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART) adherence among HIV-positive adults in Ethiopia and explore variations based on assessment methods, recall periods, and regional factors. The estimated national pooled prevalence of optimal HAART adherence was 79% (95% CI: 74–83, I2 = 98.1%; p-value < 0.001). Assessment methods revealed a prevalence of 64% (95% CI: 54–73) using structured assessment and 82% (95% CI: 78–86) with self-reporting. Optimum adherence varied based on recall periods, ranging from 78 to 85% with self-reporting. Heterogeneity analysis indicated substantial variation (I2 = 98.1%; p-value < 0.001), addressed through subgroup analysis, sensitivity analysis, and univariate meta-regression. Subgroup analysis based on region identified varying prevalence: SNNPR (83%), Oromia (81%), Amhara (79%), and Addis Ababa (74%). Considering the 2018 guideline revision, year-based subgroup analysis showed a prevalence of 78% and 78% before and after 2018, respectively. Sensitivity analysis demonstrated the stability of results, with excluded studies having a minimal impact. Publication bias analysis indicated an absence of bias, as evidenced by a non-significant Egger's regression test (p-value = 0.002) and no adjustment in trim and fill analysis.ConclusionsThe estimated overall prevalence of optimal adherence was 79%, indicating a substantial level of adherence to HAART in the Ethiopian context. The study identified variations in adherence levels based on assessment methods and recall periods, highlighting the importance of considering these factors in evaluating adherence rates. Abstract Introduction Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a pressing global health concern, particularly pronounced in low-resource settings. In Ethiopia, the escalating prevalence of carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) poses a substantial threat to public health. Methods A comprehensive search of databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Hinari, and Google Scholar, identified relevant studies. Inclusion criteria encompassed observational studies reporting the prevalence of meropenem-resistant P. aeruginosa in Ethiopia. Quality assessment utilized JBI checklists. A random-effects meta-analysis pooled data on study characteristics and prevalence estimates, with subsequent subgroup and sensitivity analyses. Publication bias was assessed graphically and statistically. Results Out of 433 studies, nineteen, comprising a total sample of 11,131, met inclusion criteria. The pooled prevalence of meropenem-resistant P. aeruginosa was 15% (95% CI: 10–21%). Significant heterogeneity (I2 = 83.6%) was observed, with the number of P. aeruginosa isolates identified as the primary source of heterogeneity (p = 0.127). Subgroup analysis by infection source revealed a higher prevalence in hospital-acquired infections (28%, 95% CI: 10, 46) compared to community settings (6%, 95% CI: 2, 11). Geographic based subgroup analysis indicated the highest prevalence in the Amhara region (23%, 95% CI: 8, 38), followed by Addis Ababa (21%, 95% CI: 11, 32), and lower prevalence in the Oromia region (7%, 95% CI: 4, 19). Background: Despite the global surge in the Corona virus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, people's efforts to combat the pandemic have been insufficient. The world has experienced a number of challenges in terms of COVID-19 vaccine acceptance. Therefore, understanding the community's willingness to receive the vaccine will aid in the creation and implementation of effective COVID-19 immunization. As a result, the aim of this study was to assess the magnitude of COVID-19 vaccine acceptance and associated factors among adults in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study with 419 household heads was undertaken in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. To identify factors associated with the outcome and independent variables, bi-variable and multi-variable logistic regression analyses were used. A 95% confidence interval and a p-value of less than 0.05 were deemed sufficient to declare a significant association. Results: The level of COVID-19 vaccine acceptance was 46.3 % (95 % CI: 43.87–48.73). Moreover, age groups above 58 years (AOR = 0.38, 95: CI: 0.17, 0.84), chronic disease (AOR: 2.09, 95 % CI: 1.28–3.42), a positive attitude (AOR: 1.64, 95 % CI: 1.29–2.04), being a Muslim (AOR: 0.36, 95 % CI: 0.19–0.71) and social support (AOR: 1.7, 95 % CI: 1.04–2.79) were all significantly related to COVID-19 vaccine acceptance. Conclusion: The findings of this study revealed a lower rate of COVID-19 vaccination acceptance. Age, chronic disease, attitude, and social support were significant predictors of COVID-19 vaccine acceptance. Therefore, emphasis should be given for community mobilization, especially for the elderly, those with limited social engagement, and those who have a negative attitude toward COVID-19 vaccination.

The Gedeo zone agroforestry systems are the main source of Ethiopia’s coffee beans. However, land-use and suitability analyses are not well documented due to complex topography, heterogeneous agroforestry, and lack of information. This research aimed to map the coffee coverage and identify land suitability for coffee plantations using remote sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) in the Gedeo zone, Southern Ethiopia. Remote sensing classifiers often confuse agroforestry and plantations like coffee cover with forest cover because of their similar spectral signatures. Mapping shaded coffee in Gedeo agroforestry using optical or multispectral remote sensing is challenging. To address this, the study identified and mapped coffee coverage from Sentinel-1 data with a decibel (dB) value matched to actual coffee coverage. The actual field data were overlaid on Sentinel-1, which was used to extract the raster value. Pre-processing, classification, standardization, and reclassification of thematic layers were performed to find potential areas for coffee plantation. Hierarchy levels of the main criteria were formed based on climatological, edaphological, physiographic, and socioeconomic factors. These criteria were divided into 14 sub-criteria, reclassified based on their impact on coffee growing, with their relative weights derived using AHP. From the total study area of 1356.2 km2, the mapped coffee coverage is 583 km2. The outcome of the final computed factor weight indicated that average annual temperature and mean annual rainfall are the primary factors, followed by annual mean maximum temperature, elevation, annual mean minimum temperature, soil pH, Land Use/Land Cover (LULC), soil texture, Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC), slope, Soil Organic Matter (SOM), aspect, distance to roads, and distance to water, respectively. The identified coffee plantation potential land suitability reveals unsuitable (413 km2), sub-suitable (596.1 km2), and suitable (347.1 km2) areas. This study provides comprehensive spatial details for Ethiopian cultivators, government officials, and agricultural extension specialists to select optimal coffee farming locations, enhancing food security and economic prosperity.

Introduction: Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is responsible for half of all maternal deaths during childbirth. Despite being preventable and curable, PPH remains the leading cause of maternal death in Ethiopia. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify the determinants of PPH among women delivered at public hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in 2022. Methods: A facility-based, unmatched case control study with 378 study participants was carried out in selected public hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Women who gave birth and developed PPH were considered cases, while women who gave birth in public hospitals in Addis Ababa and did not develop PPH were controls. Binary and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to identify independent predictors of PPH. Variables was considered statistically significant in the final model if their p-value was less than 0.05. Results: The result of this study identified that antenatal care follow-up (AOR: 2.58; 95% CI: 1.12, 5.96), history of cesarean delivery (AOR: 3.47; 95% CI: 1.40, 8.58), prolonged labor (AOR: 5.14; CI: 2.07, 12.75), and genital trauma apart from episiotomy (AOR: 4.39; CI: 1.51, 12.81) were determinants of PPH. Conclusion: According to the finding of this study duration of labor, history of cesarean section, antenatal care follow-up, and genital trauma other than episiotomy were independent determinants of PPH. Therefore, it is crucial to screen and closely monitor high-risk mothers during antepartum care visit, including those who have a history of cesarean delivery.

However, data on the prevalence and factors associated with unmet drug-related needs in patients with diabetes in Ethiopia is limited. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the prevalence of unmet drug-related needs among patients with diabetes mellitus in Ethiopia.MethodsA thorough exploration of databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Hinari, and Embase and Google Scholar, was conducted to identify pertinent studies. Inclusion criteria involved observational studies that reported the prevalence of unmet drug-related needs in Ethiopian patients with diabetes. The quality of the studies was assessed using Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) checklists. A random-effects meta-analysis was employed to amalgamate data on study characteristics and prevalence estimates, followed by subsequent subgroup and sensitivity analyses. Graphical and statistical assessments were employed to evaluate publication bias.ResultsAnalysis of twelve studies involving 4,017 patients revealed a pooled prevalence of unmet drug-related needs at 74% (95% CI 63-83%). On average, each patient had 1.45 unmet drug-related needs. The most prevalent type of unmet need was ineffective drug therapy, 35% (95% CI 20-50). Type 2 diabetes, retrospective study designs, and studies from the Harari Region were associated with a higher prevalence. Frequently reported factors associated with the unmet drug-related needs includes multiple comorbidities, older age, and polypharmacy. BackgroundUncontrolled hypertension (HTN) is a major risk factor for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease. The prevalence of HTN in the Ethiopian adult population is almost 20%.This study aimed to determine the prevalence of uncontrolled HTN and its contributing factors among patients with HTN in Ethiopia undergoing treatment.MethodsElectronic bibliographic databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, Hinari (Research4Life), Embase, and Scopus were searched for original records in the English language that assessed HTN control in Ethiopia and were available before 29 June 2023. The data were extracted using a format prepared in Microsoft Excel and exported to the software STATA 17.0 for analysis. The study protocol was registered at PROSPERO with the reference number CRD42023440121.ResultsA total of 26 studies with 9,046 patients with HTN were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis, of which 11 studies were used to assess factors contributing to uncontrolled blood pressure (BP) in patients in Ethiopia. The estimated prevalence of uncontrolled HTN in the population of Ethiopia is 51% [95% confidence interval (CI), 42%–60%]. The subgroup analysis, based on the assessment tools, region, and follow-up period, revealed that the prevalence of uncontrolled BP was highest following the guidelines of the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology (AHA/ACC) (89%; 95% CI: 87%–91%) and in Addis Ababa (58%; 95% CI: 40%–76%), and the lowest proportion of uncontrolled BP was in the 3-month follow-up period (34%; 95% CI: 29%–39%). The presence of diabetes mellitus showed the highest impact (pooled odds ratio: 5.19; CI: 1.41–19.11) for uncontrolled HTN. The univariate meta-regression method confirmed that the sample size, year of publication, and subgroups were not sources of heterogeneity in the pooled estimates. Egger's regression test did not indicate the presence of publication bias.ConclusionMore than half of the hypertensive patients in Ethiopia have uncontrolled BP. Diabetes mellitus, advanced age, male sex, and the presence of comorbidities are among the factors contributing to uncontrolled HTN in Ethiopia. Background. Globally, imprudent consumption practices contribute to the widespread threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Standardized monitoring of antibiotic use is essential to combat AMR, yet few studies in sub-Saharan Africa, including Ethiopia, have utilized the World Health Organization (WHO) point-prevalence survey (PPS) methodology to examine antimicrobial use. Our setting lacks sufficient national data on this issue. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of antimicrobial use, common antimicrobial drug types, and indications for antimicrobial use in a major public hospital. Methodology. A cross-sectional PPS study design conducted in a hospital setting was utilized to explore the usage of antimicrobials in the adult wards of Felege Hiwot Comprehensive Specialized Hospital (FHCSH), employing the WHO-PPS methodology. The research was carried out between December 24th and 26th, 2022. All patients present in a hospital ward at 8 : 00 am on the designated survey day were included. Data were gathered through a combination of reviewing patients' medical records and conducting interviews with the attending physicians. Results. A total of 410 hospitalized patients were surveyed, out of which 258 (62.9%) patients were treated with at least one antimicrobial on the date of PPS. All antimicrobials were prescribed empirically. The most common indication for the therapeutic use of antimicrobials was community-acquired infections (166, 64.3%). The top three wards with a large number of antimicrobial prescriptions were the surgical (158, 42.5%), medical (144, 38.7%), and gynecology (55, 14.8%) wards. Ceftriaxone was the most frequently used antibiotic (35%) in all the wards. The mean number of antimicrobials prescribed to the patient was 1.44. Of the prescribed 372 antimicrobials, 60.1% belonged to the WHO watch group. Conclusion. Our findings indicate that a significant number of patients received at least one antimicrobial during the point-prevalence survey (PPS). Empirical prescriptions for community-acquired infections were prevalent. These results underscore the need for robust antimicrobial stewardship programs in Ethiopian hospitals.

IntroductionHepatitis B virus (HBV) is one of the major public health problems globally and needs an urgent response. It is one of the most responsible causes of mortality among the five hepatitis viruses, and it affects almost every class of individuals. Different studies were conducted on the prevalence of HBV among pregnant women in East African countries, but none of them showed the pooled prevalence of HBV among the pregnant women. Thus, the main objective of this study was to determine the pooled prevalence and its determinants among pregnant women in East Africa.MethodsWe searched studies using PubMed, Scopus, Embase, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar and grey literature that were published between January 01/2020 to January 30/2024. The studies were assessed using the Newcastle Ottawa Scale (NOS) quality assessment scale. The random-effect (DerSimonian) model was used to determine the pooled prevalence and associated factors of HBV among pregnant women. Heterogeneity were assessed by I2 statistic, sub-group analysis, and sensitivity analysis. Publication bias was assessed by Egger test, and the analysis was done using STATA version 17.ResultA total of 45 studies with 35639 pregnant women were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. The overall pooled prevalence of HBV among pregnant women in East Africa was 6.0% (95% CI: 6.0%-7.0%, I2 = 89.7%). The highest prevalence of 8% ((95% CI: 6%, 10%), I2 = 91.08%) was seen in 2021, and the lowest prevalence 5% ((95% CI: 4%, 6%) I2 = 52.52%) was observed in 2022. A pooled meta-analysis showed that history of surgical procedure (OR = 2.14 (95% CI: 1.27, 3.61)), having multiple sexual partners (OR = 3.87 (95% CI: 2.52, 5.95), history of body tattooing (OR = 2.55 (95% CI: 1.62, 4.01)), history of tooth extraction (OR = 2.09 (95% CI: 1.29, 3.39)), abortion history(OR = 2.20(95% CI: 1.38, 3.50)), history of sharing sharp material (OR = 1.88 (95% CI: 1.07, 3.31)), blood transfusion (OR = 2.41 (95% CI: 1.62, 3.57)), family history of HBV (OR = 4.87 (95% CI: 2.95, 8.05)) and history needle injury (OR = 2.62 (95% CI: 1.20, 5.72)) were significant risk factors associated with HBV infection among pregnant women.ConclusionsThe pooled prevalence of HBV infection among pregnant women in East Africa was an intermediate level and different across countries ranging from 1.5% to 22.2%. The result of this pooled prevalence was an indication of the need for screening, prevention, and control of HBV infection among pregnant women in the region. Therefore, early identification of risk factors, awareness creation on the mode of transmission HBV and implementation of preventive measures are essential in reducing the burden of HBV infection among pregnant women.

Abstract Background Salmonella are the major pathogenic bacteria in humans as well as in animals. Salmonella species are leading causes of acute gastroenteritis in several countries and salmonellosis remains an important public health problem worldwide, particularly in the developing countries. The situation is more aggravated by the ever increasing rate of antimicrobial resistance strains. Cattle have been implicated as a source of human infection with antimicrobial resistant Salmonella through direct contact with livestock and through the isolation of antimicrobial resistant Salmonella from raw milk, cheddar cheese, and hamburger meat traced to dairy farms. Despiite the presence of many studies on the prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of Salmonella in Ethiopia, nothing has been said on the degree of the situation among apparently healthy lactating cows and in contact humans. Hence this study was conducted to determine the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance pattern of Salmonella isolates from lactating cows and in contact humans in dairy farms of Addis Ababa. Methods a cross sectional study was conducted in Addis Ababa by collecting milk and faecal samples from lactating cows and stool samples from humans working in dairy farms. Samples were pre-enriched in buffered peptone water followed by selective enrichment using selenite cysteine and Rapaport-Vassilidis broths. Isolation and identification was made by inoculating the selectively enriched sample on to Xylose Lysine Deoxycholate agar followed by confirmation of presumptive colonies using different biochemical tests. The Kibry Bauer disk diffusion method was used for antimicrobial sensitivity testing. Results 10.7% (21/195) of cows and 13.6% (3/22) of the human subjects sheded Salmonella. 83% resistance to two or more antimicrobials and 100% resistance to ampicillin were observed. Most of the isolates were relatively sensitive to ciprofloxacin, cotrimoxazole, and chloramphenicol. Conclusion High proportion of Salmonella isolates developed resistance to the commonly prescribed antimicrobials and this may be a considerable risk in the treatment of clinical cases. So, wise use of antimicrobials must be practiced to combat the ever increasing situation of antimicrobial resistance.

Background: Diarrhea, defined as three or more loose stool per day, is a major cause of child mortality. Exploring its prevalence, and influencing factors is crucial for public health decision and targeted interventions. This study aimed to investigate these aspects using 2021 Madagascar demographic health survey data. Method: This study employed a cross-sectional design, analyzing data from a total of 8,740 weighted under-five children. The dependent variable was the occurrence of diarrhea, which was measured based on caregiver-reported incidents within the previous two weeks prior to the survey. To identify factors associated with diarrhea, a multilevel logistic regression model was utilized, allowing for the examination of both individual and contextual factors. Statistical significance was determined at a p-value of less than 0.05. Results: The analysis identified several significant factors associated with diarrhea in children under five. Children aged 7–12 months had a significantly higher risk of diarrhea (OR = 2.699, 95% CI: 2.028–3.591, p < 0.001) compared to those aged 0–6 months, while those aged 13–24 months were also at increased risk (OR = 2.079, 95% CI: 1.579–2.737, p < 0.001). Children using improved water sources had a lower likelihood of diarrhea (OR = 0.742, 95% CI: 0.583–0.944, p = 0.015). Female children were less likely to experience diarrhea compared to males (OR = 0.823, 95% CI: 0.708–0.956, p = 0.011). Mothers aged 25–34 years (OR = 0.741, 95% CI: 0.626–0.878, p = 0.001) and 35–49 years (OR = 0.628, 95% CI: 0.502–0.787, p = 0.03) had lower odds of their children having diarrhea compared to younger mothers (15–24 years). Primary maternal education was associated with a lower risk of diarrhea (OR = 0.77, 95% CI: 0.622–0.958, p = 0.019). Children from poorer (OR = 0.744, 95% CI: 0.591–0.937, p = 0.012) and middle-income households (OR = 0.732, 95% CI: 0.564–0.949, p = 0.019) had lower odds of diarrhea compared to those from the poorest households. Media exposure was significantly associated with higher odds of diarrhea (OR = 1.462, 95% CI: 1.208–1.769, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Maternal age over 25 years, child age between 7 months to 2 years, and media access are risk factors for diarrhea. In contrast, medium or low wealth levels, the mother's educational status, the child's sex, and the source of drinking water seem to be protective factors. Public health interventions should prioritize improving access to clean water and sanitation facilities, along with promoting handwashing with soap. Background: Cervical cancer is a leading cause of cancer mortality globally, especially in Africa, including Ethiopia. This review assesses predictors of cervical cancer screening uptake among Ethiopian-eligible women using the Health Belief Model. Higher education levels, perceived susceptibility, severity, and fewer barriers are associated with increased screening. Effective HBM-based interventions could enhance screening rates, potentially reducing cervical cancer incidence and mortality. Objective: The review aimed to synthesize the existing literature on the prevalence of Cervical Cancer Screening Service Uptake and Associated Factors among Eligible Women using the Health belief model in Ethiopia, 2024. Method: This systematic review and meta-analysis searched Google Scholar, PubMed, and the Cochrane Library engine. Key terms such as "Cervical cancer screening", "uptake", "utilization", "factors", "barriers", and "Ethiopia" were used to identify relevant articles. Data extraction utilized a detailed form, and the methodological quality of each study was assessed using the JBI quality appraisal checklist for cross-sectional studies. Statistical analysis was conducted using STATA version 17, and the meta-analysis findings were presented using forest plots and tables. Result: The result of seven studies revealed that the overall prevalence of Cervical Cancer Screening Service Uptake among eligible women in Ethiopia was 21% (95% CI: 15%-27%). Factors independently associated with Cancer Screening Service Uptake included: Knowledge (OR = 4.563, 95% CI: 1.012–4.188), age 30 up to 49 (OR = 4.106, 95% CI: 1.562–6.650), history of STD (OR = 2.59, 95% CI: 1.694–4.486), high perceived susceptibility (OR = 3.814, 95% CI: 2.312–5.316), high perceived severity (OR = 2.603, 95% CI: 2.203–3.003), low perceived barrier (OR = 4.390, 95% CI: 1.331–8.449), high perceived self-efficacy (OR = 4.77, 95% CI: 4.102–5.431), high perceived benefit (OR = 3.67, 95% CI: 1.851–5.489), and education level greater than primary level (OR = 4.497, 95% CI: 3.619–5.375). Conclusion: Cervical cancer is a major public health challenge in Ethiopia. Consequently, there is a pressing need for the governments to formulate comprehensive, multi-sectorial policies and strategies. Introduction: Fertility refers to the biological capacity to reproduce and have children. It is a key aspect of reproductive health influenced by various factors. Therefore, this study aims to explore the determinants of fertility rates based on urban and rural settings in Ethiopia. Method: A stratified two-stage cluster sampling approach was used, employing data from the 2019 Ethiopian Mini Demographic and Health Survey (https://dhsprogram.com). The study comprised 8,885 women aged 15 to 49 years. The study employed Stata 17, and the data was described using descriptive statistics. Associations were examined using decomposition analysis and negative binomial regression. The Incidence Rate Ratio and p-value were used to determine the statistical significance of the variables examined. Results: The negative binomial regression found that factors such as maternal age (IRR, 1.08, P-value,0.00), living in rural (IRR,1.09, P-value,0.00), being Muslim (IRR,1.13, P-value,0.00), being from other religious groups (IRR,1.16, P-value,0.00), having six up to nine household members (IRR,1.24, P-value,0.00), having greater than nine household member(IRR,1.14, P-value,0.04), having one child under five year (IRR,1.35, P-value,0.00), having two children under five year (IRR,1.77, P-value,0.00), and having more than two under five years (IRR,1.99, P-value,0.00), being currently pregnant (IRR,1.08, P-value,0.00), use of contraceptive(IRR,1.13, P-value,0.00) are positively associated with bearing more children. On the other hand, completing primary education (IRR,0.84, P-value,0.00), secondary education (IRR,0.61, P-value,0.00), being from the richest household (IRR = 0.94, P-value,0.00), and being single/divorced and widowed (IRR,0.49, P-value,0.00) are negatively associated with having more children because their IRR is less than one. The decomposition analysis also demonstrated that marital status has a stronger negative correlation with fertility in rural compared to urban settings. Additionally, the number of children under five exerts a greater influence on fertility in urban areas. Conclusion: the study found significant rural-urban differences in the factors shaping fertility in Ethiopia. While demographics like maternal age, education, and wealth influenced fertility in both settings, the relationships varied in nature and magnitude. Background: Road traffic accidents (RTAs) are a pressing public health issue in Ethiopia, exacerbated by rapid urbanization and motorization. Despite efforts, escalating rates persist due to various factors like human behavior and road infrastructure deficiencies. This study addresses the need for comprehensive data on RTAs in Ethiopia, aiming to uncover socioeconomic and behavioral factors to inform evidence-based policies. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted from March to April 2024, adhering to PRISMA guidelines. Major databases like Google Scholar, PubMed, and the Cochrane Library were searched using specific keywords related to RTAs and Ethiopia. Studies conducted between 2014 and 2024 were included, with eligibility criteria. Data extraction followed a standardized Microsoft Excel format. Study quality was assessed using the JBI checklist, with high-quality articles included. Statistical analysis, conducted using STATA version 17, included descriptive analysis, forest plots for RTA prevalence, and examination of publication bias using Egger and Begs tests. Subgroup analysis and meta-regression explored moderating factors and sources of heterogeneity. Results: The systematic review identified eight studies meeting inclusion criteria, conducted between 2014 and 2022. RTA prevalence was 36% (95% CI: 23; 49). Sensitivity analysis confirmed the robustness of the estimated prevalence. Publication bias was detected via Egger's test, though Begg's test was non-significant. The Gedeo zone agroforestry systems are the main source of Ethiopia's coffee beans. However, land-use and suitability analyses are not well documented due to complex topography, heterogeneous agroforestry, and lack of information. This research aimed to map the coffee coverage and identify land suitability for coffee plantations using remote sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) in the Gedeo zone, Southern Ethiopia. Remote sensing classifiers often confuse agroforestry and plantations like coffee cover with forest cover because of their similar spectral signatures. Mapping shaded coffee in Gedeo agroforestry using optical or multispectral remote sensing is challenging. To address this, the study identified and mapped coffee coverage from Sentinel-1 data with a decibel (dB) value matched to actual coffee coverage. The actual field data were overlaid on Sentinel-1, which was used to extract the raster value. Pre-processing, classification, standardization, and reclassification of thematic layers were performed to find potential areas for coffee plantation. Hierarchy levels of the main criteria were formed based on climatological, edaphological, physiographic, and socioeconomic factors. These criteria were divided into 14 sub-criteria, reclassified based on their impact on coffee growing, with their relative weights derived using AHP. From the total study area of 1356.2 km2, the mapped coffee coverage is 583 km2. The outcome of the final computed factor weight indicated that average annual temperature and mean annual rainfall are the primary factors, followed by annual mean maximum temperature, elevation, annual mean minimum temperature, soil pH, Land Use/Land Cover (LULC), soil texture, Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC), slope, Soil Organic Matter (SOM), aspect, distance to roads, and distance to water, respectively. The identified coffee plantation potential land suitability reveals unsuitable (413 km2), sub-suitable (596.1 km2), and suitable (347.1 km2) areas. This study provides comprehensive spatial details for Ethiopian cultivators, government officials, and agricultural extension specialists to select optimal coffee farming locations, enhancing food security and economic prosperity. Background: Cervical cancer is a significant global health challenge, with the majority of cases and deaths occurring in low-resource regions like sub-Saharan Africa including Ethiopia. Women living with HIV (WLHIV) in this area face a six-fold higher risk of cervical cancer compared to women living without HIV Both the availability of screening services and their utilization remain low, particularly among WLHIV, hindering efforts to reduce the cervical cancer burden in this vulnerable population. Objective: This study aimed to synthesize the current research on the prevalence of cervical cancer screening utilization and the associated factors among women living with HIV in Ethiopia. Method: We conducted a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis, searching databases such as Google Scholar, PubMed, and the Cochrane Library for relevant studies published from 2015 up to 2023 and the search period for these relevant articles was from April 1 up to April 30, 2024. Data from included studies was extracted, organized in Excel, and then analyzed using STATA 17. The overall effect across all studies was calculated using a random-effect model. Potential publication bias and heterogeneity in the results between studies were assessed using Egger's test, forest plot, and I² statistic, respectively. Result: According to the systematic review and meta-analysis, the overall prevalence of cervical cancer screening utilization among women living with HIV in Ethiopia was 24% (17 − 32%). Several factors were independently associated with cervical cancer screening utilization, including age (40–49) years (OR = 3.95, 95% CI: 3.307–4.595), age (18–29) years (OR = 5.021, 95% CI: 1.563–9.479), education level greater than college (OR = 3.293, 95% CI: 1.835–4.751), having good knowledge (OR = 3.421, 95% CI: 2.928–3.915), early initiation of sexual intercourse (OR = 3.421, 95% CI: 2.928–3.915), awareness of cervical cancer (OR = 3.551, 95% CI: 2.945–4.157), having information about cancer (OR = 3.671, 95% CI: 2.606–4.736), CD4 count less than 500 cell/mm3 (OR = 4.001, 95% CI: 1.463–6.539), government employee (OR = 5.921, 95% CI: 1.767–10.076), and perceived susceptibility (OR = 2.950, 95% CI: 2.405–3.496). Conclusion: This systematic review and meta-analysis show that the pooled prevalence of cervical cancer screening rates among Women living with HIV in Ethiopia is notably low, at only 24%. Factors influencing service utilization include age, education level, knowledge about cervical cancer, early sexual initiation, awareness of the disease itself, and HIV-related conditions. Background: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global public health concern that is fueled by the overuse of antimicrobial agents. Low- and middle-income countries, including those in Africa,. Point prevalence surveys (PPS) have been recognized as valuable tools for assessing antimicrobial utilization and guiding quality improvement initiatives. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the prescription rates, indications, and quality of antimicrobial use in African health facilities. Methods: A comprehensive search was conducted in multiple databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Hinari (Research4Life) and Google Scholar. Studies reporting the point prevalence of antimicrobial prescription or use in healthcare settings using validated PPS tools were included. The quality of the studies was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal checklist. A random-effects meta-analysis was conducted to combine the estimates. Heterogeneity was evaluated using Q statistics, I² statistics, meta-regression, and sensitivity analysis. Publication bias was assessed using a funnel plot and Egger's regression test, with a p-value of < 0.05 indicating the presence of bias. Results: Out of 1790 potential studies identified, 32 articles were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled prescription rate in acute care hospitals was 60%, with significant heterogeneity (I2 = 99%, p < 0.001). Therapeutic prescriptions constituted 62% of all the prescribed antimicrobials. Prescription quality varied: documentation of reasons in notes was 64%, targeted therapy was 10%, and parenteral prescriptions were 65%, with guideline compliance at 48%. Hospital-acquired infections comprised 20% of all prescriptions. Subgroup analyses revealed regional disparities in antimicrobial prescription prevalence, with Western Africa showing a prevalence of 65% and 44% in Southern Africa. Publication bias adjustment estimated the prescription rate at 54.8%, with sensitivity analysis confirming minor variances among studies. Conclusion: This systematic review and meta-analysis provide valuable insights into antimicrobial utilization in African health facilities. The findings highlight the need for improved antimicrobial stewardship and infection control programs to address the high prevalence of irrational antimicrobial prescribing. Background: The way the healthcare delivery system is reflected by patient satisfaction. Establishing a health system with better results depends on it. It has been assumed that higher patient satisfaction levels correlate with quality healthcare outcomes. There is little national data to support patient satisfaction with inpatient health services in Ethiopia. In order to estimate the pooled proportion of patient satisfaction and determine the associated factors with inpatient health services at public hospitals, a systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted. Methods: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines were followed in the extraction of the data. To get the included studies, the following electronic databases were searched: Pub-Med, Google Scholar, Med-Line, Web of Science, Scopus and Repositories. Software called STATA version 17 was used to analyze statistical data using the random effects model. Forest plots were used to display the pooled results. Results: Of the 1583 records resulted in electronic databases searching, 11 studies with 3,958 participants were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. The estimated pooled proportion of patient satisfaction with inpatient health services was found to be 57.4% (95% CI: 50.88–64.59, I2 = 95.25%). Assuring privacy for patients (OR = 7.44, 95% CI: 3.63–15.25, I2 = 0.0%), availability of direction signs (2.96, 95% CI: 1.91–4.57, I2 = 0.0%), providing adequate information (OR = 3.27, 95% CI: 1.63–6,58, I2 = 65.60%), history of previous admission (OR = 0.29, 0.18–0.46, I2 = 86.36%) and providing on time treatment (OR = 1.63, 95% CI: 1.21–2.20, I2 = 86.36%) were statistically significant factors associated with patient satisfaction with inpatient health services. Conclusion: The estimated pooled level of patient satisfaction with inpatient health services is low in Ethiopia. A higher level of patient satisfaction with inpatient health treatments was predicted by factors such as privacy assurance, fast services, availability of direction signs, provision of services with adequate information transfer, and no history of previous admission. To improve patient satisfaction, the Ministry of Health and hospital administration must place a strong emphasis on ensuring the provision of high-quality, standard-based inpatient healthcare.
