The aggregation of topological spin textures at nano and micro scales has practical applications in spintronic technologies. Here, the authors report the in-plane current-induced proliferation and aggregation of bimerons in a bulk chiral magnet. It is found that the spin-transfer torques can induce the proliferation and aggregation of bimerons only in the presence of an appropriate out-of-plane magnetic field. It is also found that a relatively small damping and a relatively large non-adiabatic spin-transfer torque could lead to more pronounced bimeron proliferation and aggregation. Particularly, the current density should be larger than a certain threshold in order to trigger the proliferation; namely, the bimerons may only be driven into translational motion under weak current injection. Besides, the authors find that the aggregate bimerons could relax into a deformed honeycomb bimeron lattice with a few lattice structure defects after the current injection. The results are promising for the development of bio-inspired spintronic devices that use a large number of aggregate bimerons. Topological magnetic (anti)skrymions are robust string-like objects heralded as potential components in next-generation topological spintronics devices due to their manipulability via low-energy stimuli such as magnetic fields, heat, and electric/thermal current. While these two-dimensional (2D) topological objects are widely studied, intrinsically three-dimensional (3D) electron-spin real-space topology remains less explored despite its prevalence in bulky magnets. Here, we capture the 3D structure of antiskyrmions in a single-crystal, precision-doped (Fe_{0.63}Ni_{0.3}Pd_{0.07})_{3}P lamellae using holographic vector field electron tomography at room temperature and zero field. Our measurements reveal hybrid string-like solitons composed of skyrmions with topological number W = -1 on the lamellae's surfaces and an antiskyrmion (W = +1) connecting them. High resolution images uncover a Bloch point (BP) quadrupole (four magnetic (anti)monopoles) positioned along the rectangular antiskyrmion's four corners (Bloch lines), which enable the observed lengthwise topological transitions. Furthermore, we calculate and compare the energy densities of hybrid strings with ideal (anti)skyrmion strings using micromagnetic simulations, which suggest that this composite (anti)BP structure stabilizes via the subtle interplay between the magnetostatic interaction and anisotropic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The interface composed of magnets and strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) materials forms an important platform for spintronic devices and intriguing magnetic phenomena, such as the chiral spin textures and magnetic proximity effect (MPE). The interface exchange interaction and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) have been discussed in a wide range of heterostructures, while the crystal stacking geometry modulation on these interface interactions has rarely been considered. Here, we show a pronounced geometry modulation on the interface magnetism through comparing a rutile and an anatase IrO2 capping on a ferrimagnetic CoFe2O4. The rutile heterostructure with a high-symmetry interface shows a conventional anomalous Hall effect (AHE) profile due to the MPE. In contrast, the anatase one with a low-symmetry interface exhibits a topological-like AHE even at zero-field, suggesting the emergence of non-coplanar magnetic order at the interface. Our results suggest that the influence of DMI at the interface can be more accentuated by forming a low-symmetry interface and raises a new means of designing interface magnetism via the geometry modulation., Comment: 4 figures

Magnetic skyrmions, vortex-like topological spin textures, have attracted much interest in a wide range of research fields from fundamental physics to spintronics applications. Recently, growing attention has also been paid to antiskyrmions emerging in opposite topological charge in non-centrosymmetric magnets with $D_{2\mathrm{d}}$ or $S_4$ symmetry. In these magnets, complex interplay among anisotropic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, uniaxial magnetic anisotropy, and magnetic dipolar interactions generates a variety of magnetic structures. However, the relation between the stability of antiskyrmions and these magnetic interactions remains to be elucidated. In this work, we control the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy of schreibersite (Fe,Ni)$_3$P with $S_4$ symmetry by doping and investigate its impact on the stability of antiskyrmions. Our magnetometry study, supported by ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy, shows that the variation of the Ni content and slight doping with 4$d$ transition metals considerably change the magnetic anisotropy. In particular, doping with Pd induces easy-axis anisotropy, giving rise to formation of antiskyrmions, while a temperature-induced spin reorientation is observed in a Rh-doped compound. In combination with Lorentz transmission electron microscopy and micromagnetic simulations, we quantitatively analyze the stability of antiskyrmion as functions of uniaxial anisotropy and demagnetization energy, and demonstrate that subtle balance between them is necessary to stabilize the antiskyrmions., Comment: This is a post-peer-review, pre-copyedit version of an article published in Advanced Materials (2022). The advent of ferromagnetism in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) magnets has stimulated high interest in exploring topological magnetic textures, such as skyrmions for use in future skyrmion-based spintronic devices. To engineer skyrmions in vdW magnets by transforming Bloch-type magnetic bubbles into N\'eel-type skyrmions, the heterostructure of heavy metal/vdW magnetic thin film has been made to induce interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). However, the unambiguous identification of the magnetic textures inherent to vdW magnets, e.g., whether the magnetic twists (skyrmions/domain walls) are N\'eel- or Bloch-type, is unclear. Here we demonstrate that the N\'eel- or Bloch-type magnetic twists can be tuned in the vdW magnet Fe3GeTe2 (FGT) with/without interfacial DMI. We use an in-plane magnetic field to align the modulation wavevector q of the magnetizations in order to distinguish the N\'eel- or Bloch-type magnetic twists. We observe that q is perpendicular to the in-plane field in the heterostructure (Pt/oxidized-FGT/FGT/oxidized-FGT), while q aligns at a rotated angle with respect to the field direction in the thin plate by thinning bulk FGT. We find that the aligned domain wall twists hold fan-like modulations, coinciding qualitatively with our computational results.

Topological spin textures have attracted much attention both for fundamental physics and spintronics applications. Among them, antiskyrmions possess a unique spin configuration with Bloch-type and N\'eel-type domain walls due to anisotropic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in the noncentrosymmetric crystal structure. However, antiskyrmions have thus far only been observed in a few Heusler compounds with $D_{2\mathrm{d}}$ symmetry. Here, we report a new material Fe$_{1.9}$Ni$_{0.9}$Pd$_{0.2}$P in a different symmetry class ($S_4$ symmetry), where antiskyrmions exist over a wide temperature region including room temperature, and transform to skyrmions upon changing magnetic field and lamella thickness. The periodicity of magnetic textures greatly depends on crystal thickness, and domains with anisotropic sawtooth fractals are observed at the surface of thick crystals, which are attributed to the interplay between dipolar interaction and DMI as governed by crystal symmetry. The electrical Hall effect can be significantly enhanced through the interplay of the conduction electrons with magnetism, which is known as the anomalous Hall effect (AHE). Whereas the mechanism related to band topology has been intensively studied towards energy efficient electronics, those related to electron scattering have received limited attention. Here we report the observation of giant AHE of electron-scattering origin in a chiral magnet MnGe thin film. The Hall conductivity and Hall angle respectively reach 40,000 {\Omega}-1cm-1 and 18 % in the ferromagnetic region, exceeding the conventional limits of AHE of intrinsic and extrinsic origins, respectively. A possible origin of the large AHE is attributed to a new type of skew-scattering via thermally-excited spin-clusters with scalar spin chirality, which is corroborated by the temperature-magnetic-field profile of the AHE being sensitive to the film-thickness or magneto-crystalline anisotropy. The competition between the ferromagnetic exchange interaction and anti-symmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction can stabilize a helical phase or support the formation of skyrmions. In thin films of chiral magnets, the current density can be large enough to unpin the helical phase and reveal its nontrivial dynamics. We theoretically study the dynamics of the helical phase under spin-transfer torques that reveal distinct orientation processes, driven by topological defects in the bulk or induced by edges, limited by instabilities at higher currents. Our experiments confirm the possibility of on-demand switching the helical orientation by current pulses. The quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) is an exotic quantum phenomenon originating from dissipation-less chiral channels at the sample edge. While the QAHE has been observed in magnetically doped topological insulators (TIs), exploiting magnetic proximity effect on the TI surface from adjacent ferromagnet layers may provide an alternative approach to the QAHE by opening an exchange gap with less disorder than that in the doped system. Nevertheless, the engineering of a favorable heterointerface that realizes the QAHE based on the magnetic proximity effect remains to be achieved. Here, we report on the observation of the QAHE in a proximity coupled system of non-magnetic TI and ferromagnetic insulator (FMI). We have designed sandwich heterostructures of (Zn,Cr)Te/(Bi,Sb)2Te3/(Zn,Cr)Te that fulfills two prerequisites for the emergence of the QAHE; the formation of a sizable exchange gap at the TI surface state and the tuning of the Fermi energy into the exchange gap. The efficient proximity coupling in the all-telluride based heterostructure as demonstrated here will enable a realistic design of versatile tailor-made topological materials coupled with ferromagnetism, ferroelectricity, superconductivity, and so on., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures

Since the discovery of ferromagnetic two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) crystals, significant interest on such 2D magnets has emerged, inspired by their appealing properties and integration with other 2D family for unique heterostructures. In known 2D magnets, spin-orbit coupling (SOC) stabilizes perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). Such a strong SOC could also lift the chiral degeneracy, leading to the formation of topological magnetic textures such as skyrmions through the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Here, we report the experimental observation of N\'eel-type chiral magnetic skyrmions and their lattice (SkX) formation in a vdW ferromagnet Fe3GeTe2 (FGT). We demonstrate the ability to drive individual skyrmion by short current pulses along a vdW heterostructure, FGT/h-BN, as highly required for any skyrmion-based spintronic device. Using first principle calculations supported by experiments, we unveil the origin of DMI being the interfaces with oxides, which then allows us to engineer vdW heterostructures for desired chiral states. Magnetic skyrmion textures are realized mainly in non-centrosymmetric, e.g. chiral or polar, magnets. Extending the field to centrosymmetric bulk materials is a rewarding challenge, where the released helicity / vorticity degree of freedom and higher skyrmion density result in intriguing new properties and enhanced functionality. We report here on the experimental observation of a skyrmion lattice (SkL) phase with large topological Hall effect and an incommensurate helical pitch as small as 2.8 nm in metallic Gd3Ru4Al12, which materializes a breathing kagom\'e lattice of Gadolinium moments. The magnetic structure of several ordered phases, including the SkL, is determined by resonant x-ray diffraction as well as small angle neutron scattering. The SkL and helical phases are also observed directly using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. Emergent phenomena and functions arising from topological electron-spin textures in real space or momentum space are attracting growing interest for new concept of states of matter as well as for possible applications to spintronics. One such example is a magnetic skyrmion, a topologically stable nanoscale spin vortex structure characterized by a topological index. Real-space regular arrays of skyrmions are described by combination of multi-directional spin helixes. Nanoscale configurations and characteristics of the two-dimensional skyrmion hexagonal-lattice have been revealed extensively by real-space observations. Other three-dimensional forms of skyrmion lattices, such as a cubic-lattice of skyrmions, are also anticipated to exist, yet their direct observations remain elusive. Here we report real-space observations of spin configurations of the skyrmion cubic-lattice in MnGe with a very short period (~3 nm) and hence endowed with the largest skyrmion number density. The skyrmion lattices parallel to the {100} atomic lattices are directly observed using Lorentz transmission electron microscopes (Lorentz TEMs). It enables the first simultaneous observation of magnetic skyrmions and underlying atomic-lattice fringes. These results indicate the emergence of skyrmion-antiskyrmion lattice in MnGe, which is a source of emergent electromagnetic responses and will open a possibility of controlling few-nanometer scale skyrmion lattices through atomic lattice modulations.
