Abstract In individuals with acne vulgaris, alterations occur in serum metabolite composition, yet the exact causal link between these metabolites and acne development remains elusive. Using genome-wide association datasets, we performed bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) to investigate the potential causal relationship between 309 serum metabolites and acne vulgaris. We performed sensitivity analysis to evaluate the presence of heterogeneity and pleiotropy. Forward MR analysis found 14 serum metabolites significantly associated with acne vulgaris, and reverse MR analysis found no significant association between acne vulgaris and these serum metabolites. Through validation using data from the FinnGen database of acne vulgaris studies, we found a conclusive and significant correlation between stearoylcarnitine and acne vulgaris. This provides new evidence in the search for new targets for the treatment of acne vulgaris.

Abstract Objective This study aims to translate the Pectus Excavatum Evaluation Questionnaire(PEEQ) into Chinese, and to comprehensively assess subjective outcomes in quality of life of children with pectus excavatum. Methods The PEEQ was translated from English to Chinese as according to the PRO translation guidelines. Structural validity and reliability of the questionnaire were examined by validated factor analysis and Cronbach’s alpha coefficient analysis respectively. Results The results of the validation factor analysis for the Chinese PEEQ parent’s and child’s questionnaires demonstrated that the fit indicators for each dimension met the required criteria. The overall Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of parent’s and child’s questionnaires were 0.840 and 0.854. Both the item-level content validity index (I-CVI) and scale-level content validity index (S-CVI) of each sub-questionnaire were 1. Conclusion The Chinese version of the PEEQ parent’s questionnaire is suitable as a proxy assessment for patients with PE, but the child’s questionnaire needs further adjustments.

Abstract Background A data mining algorithm is proposed based on BERTopic to provide new insights into the analysis of medication rules in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) prescriptions. Methods Using the BERTopic algorithm, collected TCM prescriptions for corneal diseases are converted to embeddings through a transformer based on the Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers pre‐trained model. Then, Uniform Manifold Approximation and Projection is applied to perform dimensionality reduction in prescription embeddings. Subsequently, Hierarchical Density‐Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise is used for clustering. Finally, class‐based term frequency–inverse document frequency is used to generate several main drug combinations from the clustered results. Results The highest frequency of drugs used included Buddleja officinalis, Bidens pilosa, Angelica sinensis, Eriocaulon buergerianum, and Raw Rehmannia glutinosa. The most frequent drug combinations were “Eriocaulon buergerianum, Raw Rehmannia glutinosa, Prunella vulgaris, Notopterygium incisum” “Lycii Fructus, Bidens pilosa, Buddleja officinalis” and “Kochiae Fructus, Cortex Dictamni.” Conclusions The proposed data mining algorithm based on BERTopic demonstrated promising outcomes in the analysis of TCM prescription medication rules. This method exhibited simplicity and efficiency, thereby offering a novel avenue for analysis.

Through analysis of four aspects, including the distribution and production of global oil and gas fields, the distribution and changes of remaining recoverable reserves, the differences in oil and gas production between regions/countries, and the development potential of oil and gas fields with production capacity not built and to be built, this paper presents the situation and trends of global oil and gas development in 2022. It is found that, in 2022, oil and gas fields are widely distributed worldwide, and upstream production activities continue to recover; the oil and gas reserves decrease slightly year on year, and the oil and gas reserves in sea areas increase significantly; the oil and gas production increases continuously, and the key resource countries make a significant contribution in oil and gas production growth; the oil and gas fields with production capacity not built and to be built hold abundant reserves, and their development potential will be gradually released with the economic benefits increase. Further analysis is conducted from the perspectives of global oil and gas resources continuity, geopolitical risks, potential of international cooperation, and upgrade of unconventional oil and gas technology. Finally, in view of core business domains and strategies under the new situation, the Chinese oil companies are recommended to: (1) keep a foothold in onshore conventional oil and gas development by virtue of their comparative advantages and learning from other's experience in cooperation; (2) carry out pilot tests on development adjustment, and deepen the international cooperation in enhanced oil/gas recovery; (3) improve the oil and gas operation capabilities in sea areas to transform from follower as minority shareholder to joint venture and then to independent operations; and (4) seek appropriate ways for shale oil/gas development to reduce the dependence on foreign oil and gas.

Abstract We aimed to analyse postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) incidence and risk factors in elderly adults who underwent surgery for oral malignancies. A total of 112 elderly patients (aged ≥ 55 years) were selected for expanded resection of oral malignancy and cervical lymphatic dissection at our institution from December 2020 to December 2021. Participants were cognitively evaluated using the neuropsychological test scale 1 day before and 7 days after surgery to determine whether they had developed POCD. Based on whether POCD occurred 7 days after surgery, patients were classified into the POCD and non-POCD groups. Logistic regression was applied to perioperative factors to analyse the risk factors for POCD onset. Seven days after surgery for oral malignancy, there were 37 (33.1%) POCD morbidities. Abstract The underground coal mine production of the fully mechanized mining face exists many problems, such as poor operating environment, high accident rate and so on. Recently, the intelligent autonomous coal mining is gradually replacing the traditional mining process. The artificial intelligence technology is an active research area and is expect to identify and warn the underground abnormal conditions for intelligent longwall mining. It is inseparable from the construction of datasets, but the downhole dataset is still blank at present. This work develops an image dataset of underground longwall mining face (DsLMF+), which consists of 138004 images with annotation 6 categories of mine personnel, hydraulic support guard plate, large coal, towline, miners’ behaviour and mine safety helmet. All the labels of dataset are publicly available in YOLO format and COCO format. The availability and accuracy of the datasets were reviewed by experts in coal mine field. The dataset is open access and aims to support further research and advancement of the intelligent identification and classification of abnormal conditions for underground mining.

Background: Lipids, as a fundamental cell component, play an regulating role in controlling the different cellular biological processes involved in viral infections. A notable feature of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is impaired lipid metabolism. The function of lipophagy-related genes in COVID-19 is unknown. The present study aimed to investigate biomarkers and drug targets associated with lipophagy and lipophagy-based therapeutic agents for COVID-19 through bioinformatics analysis. Methods: Lipophagy-related biomarkers for COVID-19 were identified using machine learning algorithms such as random forest, Support Vector Machine-Recursive Feature Elimination, Generalized Linear Model, and Extreme Gradient Boosting in three COVID-19-associated GEO datasets: scRNA-seq (GSE145926) and bulk RNA-seq (GSE183533 and GSE190496). The cMAP database was searched for potential COVID-19 medications. Results: The lipophagy pathway was downregulated, and the lipid droplet formation pathway was upregulated, resulting in impaired lipid metabolism. Seven lipophagy-related genes, including ACADVL, HYOU1, DAP, AUP1, PRXAB2, LSS, and PLIN2, were used as biomarkers and drug targets for COVID-19. Moreover, lipophagy may play a role in COVID-19 pathogenesis. As prospective drugs for treating COVID-19, seven potential downregulators (phenoxybenzamine, helveticoside, lanatoside C, geldanamycin, loperamide, pioglitazone, and trichostatin A) were discovered. These medication candidates showed remarkable binding energies against the seven biomarkers. Conclusions: The lipophagy-related genes ACADVL, HYOU1, DAP, AUP1, PRXAB2, LSS, and PLIN2 can be used as biomarkers and drug targets for COVID-19. Seven potential downregulators of these seven biomarkers may have therapeutic effects for treating COVID-19.

BackgroundNumerous studies have suggested a correlation between gut microbiota and acne vulgaris; however, no specific causal link has been explored.Materials and methodsTo investigate the possible causal relationship between gut microbiota and acne vulgaris, this study employed a large-scale genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistic. Initially, a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was utilized to identify the specific gut microflora responsible for acne vulgaris. We used the Inverse Variance Weighted (IVW) method as the main MR analysis method. Additionally, we assessed heterogeneity and horizontal pleiotropy, while also examining the potential influence of individual single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on the analysis results. In order to eliminate gut microbiota with reverse causal associations, we conducted reverse MR analysis. Multivariate Mendelian randomization analysis (MVMR) was then employed to verify the independence of the causal associations. Finally, we performed SNP annotation on the instrumental variables of independent gut microbiota and acne vulgaris to determine the genes where these genetic variations are located. ABSTRACT Nervous necrosis virus (NNV), a highly contagious fish virus, has caused huge economic losses to the global aquaculture industry. A previous study showed that protein A (ProA) encoded by orange-spotted grouper NNV triggers type I interferon (IFN) production in fish cells, but the activation and modulation of correlative signal pathways remain unclear. Here, we proved that ProA induces fish cell-specific IFN promoter activation in a dose-dependent manner. In channel catfish ovary (CCO, an NNV-permissive cell), ProA evoked expression and secretion of functional IFN with anti-DNA virus activity, suggesting a good model for IFN signaling research. A contrastive study of signaling in CCO and fathead minnow (FHM, an NNV-nonpermissive cell) using RNAi knockdown or dominant negative mutant overexpression verified that ProA-mediated IFN activation went through retinoic acid-inducible gene I (RIG-I)-like receptor (RLR) pathway (RIG-I/MDA5-MAVS-TRAF3-TBK1-IRF3) while NOD1-RIPK2-NFκB and TLR3-TRIF branches were unnecessary. As RNA receptors upregulated by ProA in FHM, RIG-I and MDA5 promoted ProA-mediated IFN activation to form a positive feedback loop, while LGP2, NOD1, and PKR inhibited this activation as negative modulators. In ProA-expressed, NNV-infected CCO, the transcription of RIG-I, MDA5, MAVS, TBK1, IRF3, and IFN was downregulated, but the expression of LGP2, TRAF3, and NOD1 remained unchanged, suggesting unknown IFN suppression mechanism by NNV infection. IFN inhibition by overexpressing mutated RIG-I greatly enhanced NNV replication in FHM, implying that RIG-I might be the main target for both ProA-mediated activation and NNV infection-induced inhibition. This study provides overviews and foundations for understanding the interaction between betanodavirus-encoded protein and fish innate immune signaling. IMPORTANCE As a major pathogen, nervous necrosis virus (NNV) infects more than 120 fish species worldwide and is virulent to larvae and juvenile fish, hampering the development of the fish fry industry. Understanding virus-host interaction and underlying mechanisms is an important but largely unknown issue in fish virus studies. Here, using channel catfish ovary and fathead minnow cells as models for the study of innate immunity signaling, we found that NNV-encoded ProA activated interferon signaling via the retinoic acid-inducible gene I (RIG-I)-like receptor (RLR) pathway which was still suppressed by the infection of wild-type NNV. This finding has important implications for the comprehension of NNV protein function and the immune response from different cells. First, RIG-I is the key node for anti-NNV innate immunity. Second, the response intensity of RLR signaling determines the degree of NNV proliferation. This study expands our knowledge regarding the overview of signal pathways affected by NNV-encoded protein and also highlights potential directions for the control of aquatic viruses.

BackgroundAcne is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that affects the pilosebaceous follicle and is influenced by heredity, hormones, inflammation, and the environment. At present, the recognized pathogenesis mainly includes four categories: excessive sebum secretion, excessive Cutibacterium acnes proliferation, excessive keratinization of sebaceous glands in hair follicles, and inflammatory mechanisms. Previous studies have found that DNA methylation is closely related to some chronic inflammatory skin diseases, and there is evidence that DNA methylation is controlled by genetic factors, making us want to know the relationship between DNA methylation, genetic variation and acne.Materials and methodsIn our previous study, we performed genome-wide DNA methylation analysis in peripheral blood samples from 44 patients with severe acne and 44 unaffected normal subjects, and identified 23 differentially methylated probes (DMPs). In this study, we identified single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with severe acne by genome-wide association analysis in these 88 samples. To test the association between SNPs and DMPs, we conducted DNA methylation quantitative trait loci (methQTL) analysis. Next, causal inference testing (CIT) was used to determine whether genetic variation influences DNA methylation, which impacts disease phenotypes.ResultWe found 38,269 SNPs associated with severe acne. Misinformation has posed significant threats to all aspects of people’s lives. One of the most active areas of research in misinformation examines how individuals are misinformed. In this paper, we study how and to what extent agents are misinformed in an extended bounded confidence model, which consists of three parts: (i) online selective neighbors whose opinions differ from their own but not by more than a certain confidence level; (ii) offline neighbors, in a Watts–Strogatz small-world network, whom an agent has to communicate with even though their opinions are far different from their own; and (iii) a Bayesian analysis. Furthermore, we introduce two types of epistemically irresponsible agents: agents who hide their honest opinions and focus on disseminating misinformation and agents who ignore the messages received and follow the crowd mindlessly. Simulations show that, in an environment with only online selective neighbors, the misinforming is more successful with broader confidence intervals. Having offline neighbors contributes to being cautious of misinformation, while employing a Bayesian analysis helps in discovering the truth. Moreover, the agents who are only willing to listen to the majority, regardless of the truth, unwittingly help to bring about the success of misinformation attempts, and they themselves are, of course, misled to a greater extent.

BackgroundIn recent years, the number of people using mobile applications to promote health and welfare has exponentially increased. However, there are fewer applications in the field of ERAS. How to promote the rapid rehabilitation of patients with malignant tumor surgery during perioperative period and the mastery of its long-term nutritional state is a problem to be solved.ObjectiveThe purpose of this study is to design and develop a mobile application, and use Internet technology to better manage nutritional health to achieve rapid recovery of patients with malignant tumor surgery.MethodsThis study is divided into three stages: (1) Design: use participating design to make the MHEALTH APP adapt to the clinical practice of nutritional health management; (2) Development: the WeChat Applet of Nutrition and Health Assessment (WANHA) developed using the Internet technology development, and web management programs. (3) Procedure test: patients and medical staff evaluate WANHA’s quality (UMARS), availability (SUS), and satisfaction, and conduct semi-structured interviews.ResultsIn this study, 192 patients with malignant tumor surgery, 20 medical staff used WANHA. Patients with nutritional risks are supported by supporting treatment. The results show that patients who have not been treated during the perioperative period, the incidence of postoperative complications (22.4%) and the average hospitalization time after surgery decreased significantly. The incidence of nutritional risks is nearly more than the preoperative level. 45 patients and 20 medical staff participated in the survey of WANHA’s SUS, UMARS, and satisfaction. In the interview, most patients and medical personnel believe that the procedure can improve the current medical services and nutritional health knowledge levels, promote the communication of medical staff and patients, and strengthen the nutritional health management of patients with malignant tumors under the concept of ERAS.ConclusionWeChat Applet of Nutrition and Health Assessment is a MHEALTH APP that enhances the nutrition and health management of patients with perioperative period. It can play a huge role in improving medical services, increasing patient satisfaction, and ERAS.

Procedural sedation and analgesia are now considered standard care for managing pain and anxiety in pediatric dental patients undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures outside of the operating room. Anxiolysis, which combines both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic approaches, plays a significant role in procedural sedation. Non-pharmacologic interventions such as Behavior Management Technology can help reduce preprocedural agitation, ease the transition to sedation, reduce the required amount of medication for effective sedation, and decrease the occurrence of adverse events. As the introduction of novel sedative regimen and methods in pediatric dentistry, the potential role of mainstay sedatives administered by new routes, for new indications, and with new delivery techniques, should be considered. The purpose of this paper is to examine and discuss the current state of sedation techniques in pediatric dentistry.

Abstract Due to the rapid development of new energy power generation, most coal-fired power plants cannot always operate at full capacity. The changes in flue gas temperature at the inlet of low-low temperature electrostatic precipitator and unit load are the important factors affecting the emission of condensable and filterable particulate matter (CPM and FPM). CPM and FPM were sampled from a typical ultra-low emission coal-fired power unit with different operating loads (650, 850, and 1000 MW) and flue gas temperature (90 and 100°C). The emission concentration of FPM, organic and inorganic components of CPM were obtained. The representative organic matter n-alkanes and phthalates in CPM (C-N and C-P) were quantified. The concentrations of CPM emitted from the coal-fired unit ranged from 6.66–8.93 mg Nm−3, which was 2.4–6.2 times higher than FPM. The emission concentration of CPM was the lowest from the unit under high load and low flue gas temperature. The decrease of flue gas temperature increased of SO42– emission concentration, which was the soluble ion with the highest concentration in CPM. The effect of unit load and flue gas temperature changes on monocomponent C-N and C-P was limited; however, the effect on its total emission concentration was consistent with that on CPM. The concentrations of n-alkanes and phthalates in CPM accounted for more than 20% at all four stages.

The integrity of the packaging of a liquid foodstuff makes it difficult to detect spoilage. Therefore, it is important to develop a sensitive, fast and real-time material for liquid food detection. CMC, as lignocellulose derivatives and starch are widely used in the food industry. In this study, starch films with pH-responsive properties are successfully prepared from full-component starch and corn amylopectin (CA) by adding CMC. The effects of CMC on the mechanical properties, morphology characteristics, physical and chemical structures, stability and pH responsiveness of the starch films are analyzed. The starch/CMC-1.0 g composite films display good electrical conductivity and reduce the resistance of the composite film by two orders of magnitude. The composite films have pH response ability; in the simulation of orange juice spoilage experiment, the CA/CMC composite film has a more sensitive current response and was more suitable for the application to liquid food quality detection. Additionally, the starch/CMC composite films have potential applications for rapid detection and real-time monitoring of the safety of liquid food.

BackgroundHigh-flow nasal oxygenation (HFNO) has been suggested as an alternative oxygenation method during procedural sedation. This randomized, non-inferiority trial evaluated the safety and efficacy of HFNO compared with laryngeal mask airway (LMA) in pediatric ambulatory oral surgery under deep sedation.MethodsIn total, 120 children aged 2–7 years (weight: 10–30 kg) were equally assigned into two groups, namely, HFNO with propofol total intravenous anesthesia infusion (HFNO-IV) or LMA with propofol total intravenous anesthesia infusion (LMA-IV). The primary objective was to monitor carbon dioxide (CO2) accumulation during perioperative surgery. Secondary objectives included monitoring transcutaneous oxygen saturation, grade exposure to the surgical field, perioperative adverse events, or other events. The predefined non-inferiority margin was 7 mmHg. During the COVID-19 pandemic, a novel WeChat applet was implemented to gather follow-up data after discharge.ResultsNon-inferiority could be declared for HFNO relative to LMA (mean difference in transcutaneous CO2 (TcCO2) = −1.4 mmHg, 95% CI: −2.9, 0.1 mmHg; P > 0.05). The pre-surgical TcCO2 of the HFNO-IV group (45.4 ± 4.5 mmHg) was similar to that of the LMA-IV group (44.0 ± 3.5 mmHg), within the clinically acceptable normal range. All the children maintained SpO2 levels of >97%. The surgical field exposure score of the HFNO group was significantly better than that of the LMA group. There was no significant difference between the two groups regarding risk or adverse events.ConclusionHFNO was not inferior to LMA for maintaining oxygenation and ventilation in patients undergoing pediatric ambulatory oral surgery under deep sedation under strict isolation from the oral cavity to the upper airway.

Porous carbon materials derived from ZIF-8 have attracted extensive research attention on account of their large surface area, tunable mesoporosity and abundant nitrogen content. However, directly carbonized ZIF-8 usually suffers from a low electronic conductivity, poor wettability and relatively low mesoporosity, which severely restricts their capacitive performance. Herein, P-doped modified carbon materials derived from ZIF-8 (ZPCs) were synthesized by using nontoxic phytic acid as a phosphorus source, followed by carbonization at high temperature. Benefiting from its relatively high specific surface area of 911.7 m2 g−1 and higher ratio of mesopores, as well as N, O and P doping, ZPC-1000 delivers the largest specific capacity, up to 219.4 F g−1 at 1 A g−1, among the prepared samples and an outstanding cycle span, retaining 100% capacity after 2000 cycles at 5 A g−1. In this work, we highlight the strategy of constructing a synergistic effect between high mesoporosity and heteroatom doping, which can greatly boost the capacitive performance of carbon materials.

Abstract Purpose The scanning of plaster models for three-dimensional (3D) construction requires their rigid fixation in the intercuspal position. Factors such as installation, motion, and scanning procedures influenced the accuracy of this method, which ultimately influence the results. Therefore, the present study attempted to provide an optimal and accurate method with less complex procedures and a more accessible equipment for determining the intercuspal relation in the 3D occlusal construction of dental models. Methods A pair of plastic mounting plates that could be directly attached to a mechanical articulator was designed and 3D printed. Nine axial hemispherical concaves were introduced on the axial surface of each plate. The rigidly fixed maxillary and mandibular dental models were scanned directly. The distances D R between nine pairs of concaves on both mounting plates adhered to the maxillary and mandibular sections of the articulator were measured using the three-coordinate measuring machine Faro Edge as the reference. The present study comprised seven test groups varying in number and location. Assessing the reference points from each of the seven groups performed the 3D construction. The Geomagic Studio software was used to construct the concaves of digital casts, and the distances D M between the pairs of concaves were measured as test values. Variable differences between D R and D M were analyzed. Results An optimum distribution scheme was obtained for reference point registration by quantitatively evaluating accuracy levels of the 3D constructions of different reference point distribution patterns. This scheme can serve as a reference for related studies and dental clinic operations. Conclusions Three-dimensional construction of the intercuspal relation during scanning of the maxillary and mandibular models with an accuracy of 0.046 mm ± 0.009 mm can be achieved using the improved design of mounting plates.

Introduction: Zoledronic acid (ZA) is a widely used bisphosphonate compound for the prevention of skeletal metastasis-associated osteolysis and treatment of post-menopause osteoporosis. Acute kidney injury is one of the commonly described renal complications. Electrolytes disorder has also been reported relevant to ZA exposure and nephrotoxicity. Syndrome of persistent hypophosphatemia, hypokalemia and metabolic acidosis is regarded as the initial signs of acute kidney injury. Case presentation: We reported a 64-year-old female with bone metastasis from lung adenocarcinoma who received a 5-year history of 4-week cycle ZA infusion. She initially presented symptomatic severe hypophosphatemia and was finally identified with ZA-induced generalized tubular dysfunction as Fanconi’s syndrome and distal renal tubular acidosis. Renal pathological findings revealed toxic renal tubular necrosis. The ZA infusion was thus extended to an 8-week cycle with oral phosphate supplementation and alfacalcidol. Although periodic changes pre- and post-ZA infusion existed yet, hypophosphatemia was effectively improved and the rapid decline of eGFR was partially delayed. We reviewed the literature and mainly summarized the characteristics of bisphosphonates-associated hypophosphatemia. Moderate hypophosphatemia was more frequently mentioned in contrast to severe cases being predisposed to be reported. And progressive hypophosphatemia serves as an early sign of kidney injury. Conclusion: Progressive electrolyte disorders and CKD were the long-term renal outcome of the current patient. We would like to arouse more attention to electrolytes imbalance related to early ZA-induced kidney injury and emphasize the significance of close monitoring.

One of the major issues in industry is cooling of pipes when using forced convection mechanism is not able to cool pipes, but free convection mechanism can be a suitable method. In this regard, a half-pipe was installed in the center of a half-elliptical enclosure in which the gap of between them was saturated with nanofluid of water and alumina (aluminum oxide) nanoparticle depending on temperature and nanoparticle diameter. Several samples were simulated by means of CFD and FVM to understand the impacts of Rayleigh number, inclined angle, and volume fraction of nanoparticles on the heat flux of hot pipe. In addition, the dynamic viscosity and thermal conductivity coefficient of nanofluid depended on temperature, nanoparticle diameter, and volume fraction, which were used for precising simulation to physical results. The obtained results showed that adding 3% volume fraction of alumina could increase the average heat flux of hot half-pipe by 8.7%. Moreover, at high Rayleigh numbers, volume fraction of 1% was optimum amount for volume fraction. In addition, inclined angle had considerable influence on average heat flux, specifically, in high Rayleigh numbers.

Model-identification and parameter extraction of the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is a well-defined procedure for improving the PEMFC efficiency for designing and control purposes. This paper presents a new version of the improved fluid search optimization algorithm for optimal parameter identification of the undetermined parameters of the PEMFCs. The total of square deviations between the experimentally measured values and the optimal achieved values from the algorithm is considered the cost function. Two empirical PEMFC models including BCS 500-W and NedStack PS6 are employed and analyzed to present the capability of the proposed procedure under different conditions. Simulation results are compared with different optimizers under the same conditions to demonstrate the system efficiency. The final results showed that the proposed chaos-based fluid search optimization algorithm is successfully used to extract the parameters of a PEMFC model precisely.

Background: Naoxintong Capsule (NXT) is a formulated Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) widely applied in the treatment of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, most of which are closely related to hyperlipidemia as a major risk factor. Given the current limited understandings to the role of gut microbiota in the lipid-lowering effect of NXT and other TCM products, this study investigated the regulation of gut microbiota and lipid metabolism by NXT, and their potential relationship.Methods: The chemical components of NXT were firstly analyzed with HPLC-MS method. In high fat diet (HFD)-fed rat models, as well as normal rats as control, the histopathological and biochemical changes of serum and liver were examined, including total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). In addition, the gut microbiota community was analyzed using 16S rRNA sequencing technique, the fecal levels of gut microbiota related metabolites, including bile acids (BAs) and short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) were determined with HPLC-MS. The correlations of the clinical indicators and gut microbiota related indicators were then investigated statistically.Results: The results showed that NXT exerted potential preventive effect on hyperlipidemia. Specifically, NXT significantly reduced the body weight, TC, TG and LDL-C in serum, increased HDL-C in serum, reduced the TC and TG in liver, as well as protected liver. The body weight, serum lipid levels and liver function were all significantly alleviated. The gut microbiota of the HFD-fed rats was reconstituted with supplementation of NXT. The fecal levels of gut microbiota related metabolites, including BAs and SCFAs were also altered. The correlation between the gut microbiota and clinical/metabolomic parameters was then studied. As the result, the amount of propionic aicd, Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio (F/B) and the relative abundance of Collinsella in feces are the most possibly potential therapeutic biomarkers of NXT.Conclusion: NXT was effective in regulation of gut microbiota and prevention of hyperlipidemia in HFD fed rats. The present work might provide novel insights into the anti-hyperlipidemia effect of TCM and afford new scientific evidence for clinical application of TCM.

It remains controversial whether long-term logographic-logographic bilingual experience shapes the special brain functional subnetworks underlying different components of executive function (EF). To address this question, this study explored the differences in the functional connections underlying EF between the Cantonese-Mandarin bilinguals and Mandarin monolinguals. 31 Cantonese-Mandarin bilinguals and 31 Mandarin monolinguals were scanned in a 3-T magnetic resonance scanner at rest. 4 kinds of behavioral tasks of EF were tested. Network-based statistics (NBS) was performed to compare the connectomes of fronto-parietal (FP) and cingulo-opercular (CO) network between groups. The results showed that the bilinguals had stronger connectivity than monolinguals in a subnetwork located in the CO network rather than the FP network. The identified differential subnetwork referred to as the CO subnetwork contained 9 nodes and 10 edges, in which the center node was the left mid-insula with a degree centrality of 5. The functional connectivity of the CO subnetwork was significantly negatively correlated with interference effect in bilinguals. The results suggested that long-term Cantonese-Mandarin bilingual experience was associated with stronger functional connectivity underlying inhibitory control in the CO subnetwork.

This paper presents a multi-criteria economics, environment, and thermodynamics assessment for a combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP) system consist of a heat recovery system, a small absorption chiller, a 5kW PEMFC stack, gas compressor, and a humidifier. This study presents an improved version of a new optimization technique called improved emperor penguin optimization (IEPO) algorithm for optimizing the system efficiency. After simulations, the system is analyzed in terms of energy and exergy efficiencies, annual cost, and pollutant emission reduction. Simulation results declare low operating temperature develop GHG emission reduction, high relative humidity, pressure of inlet gases, and system exergy performance. The results of the IEPO algorithm are the compared with the standard EPO and also NSGA-II as a widely used optimization algorithm for showing the superiority of the algorithm. Abstract Understanding the origins and introduction pathways of invasive species is a fundamental issue for invasion biology, which is necessary for predicting and preventing future invasion. Once an invasive species is established in a new location, this location could serve as a stepping‐stone for further invasions. However, such “stepping‐stone” effect has not been widely investigated. Using the published literature and records, we compiled the first found locations of 127 top invasive species in China. Our study showed that the most common landing spots of these invasive species were Hong Kong (22 species) and Taiwan (20 species), which accounted for one‐third of the invasive species in China. Our analysis revealed that the invasive species in mainland China were more likely to transport from Hong Kong than Macau, a neighboring region with a similar area and colonial history. Similarly, more invasive species were also first landed on Taiwan than Hainan, a nearby island sharing similar climate conditions. Together, our findings indicate that Hong Kong and Taiwan are the most important stepping‐stones for invasive species to the mainland of China and suggesting that the increasing trade exchange of China's coastal ports constitutes a potential risk for the spread of more invasive species. We suppose that they would be the future stepping‐stones for invasive species to the mainland of China and these coastal ports regions where improved biosecurity is needed now.

Cantonese-Mandarin bilinguals are logographic-logographic bilinguals that provide a unique population for bilingual studies. Whole brain functional connectivity analysis makes up for the deficiencies of previous bilingual studies on the seed-based approach and helps give a complete picture of the brain connectivity profiles of logographic-logographic bilinguals. The current study is to explore the effect of the long-term logographic-logographic bilingual experience on the functional connectivity of the whole-brain network. Thirty Cantonese-Mandarin bilingual and 30 Mandarin monolingual college students were recruited in the study. Resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) was performed to investigate the whole-brain functional connectivity differences by network-based statistics (NBS), and the differences in network efficiency were investigated by graph theory between the two groups (false discovery rate corrected for multiple comparisons, q = 0.05). Compared with the Mandarin monolingual group, Cantonese-Mandarin bilinguals increased functional connectivity between the bilateral frontoparietal and temporal regions and decreased functional connectivity in the bilateral occipital cortex and between the right sensorimotor region and bilateral prefrontal cortex. No significant differences in network efficiency were found between the two groups. Compared with the Mandarin monolinguals, Cantonese-Mandarin bilinguals had no significant discrepancies in network efficiency. However, the Cantonese-Mandarin bilinguals developed a more strongly connected subnetwork related to language control, inhibition, phonological and semantic processing, and memory retrieval, whereas a weaker connected subnetwork related to visual and phonology processing, and speech production also developed.

It is unclear whether the brain activity during phonological processing of second languages (L2) is similar to that of the first language (L1) in trilingual individuals, especially when the L1 is logographic, and the L2s are logographic and alphabetic, respectively. To explore this issue, this study examined brain activity during visual and auditory word rhyming tasks in Cantonese–Mandarin–English trilinguals. Thirty Chinese college students whose L1 was Cantonese and L2s were Mandarin and English were recruited. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was conducted while subjects performed visual and auditory word rhyming tasks in three languages (Cantonese, Mandarin, and English). The results revealed that in Cantonese–Mandarin–English trilinguals, whose L1 is logographic and the orthography of their L2 is the same as L1—i.e., Mandarin and Cantonese, which share the same set of Chinese characters—the brain regions for the phonological processing of L2 are different from those of L1; when the orthography of L2 is quite different from L1, i.e., English and Cantonese who belong to different writing systems, the brain regions for the phonological processing of L2 are similar to those of L1. A significant interaction effect was observed between language and modality in bilateral lingual gyri. Regions of interest (ROI) analysis at lingual gyri revealed greater activation of this region when using English than Cantonese and Mandarin in visual tasks.

Background The interactions between the gut microbiome and obesity have been extensively studied. Although the oral cavity is the gateway to the gut, and is extensively colonized with microbes, little is known about the oral microbiome in people with obesity. In the present study, we investigated the salivary microbiome in obese and normal weight healthy participants using metagenomic analysis. The subjects were categorized into two groups, obesity and normal weight, based on their BMIs. Methods We characterized the salivary microbiome of 33 adults with obesity and 29 normal weight controls using high-throughput sequencing of the V3–V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene (Illumina MiSeq). None of the selected participants had systemic, oral mucosal, or periodontal diseases. Results The salivary microbiome of the obesity group was distinct from that of the normal weight group. The salivary microbiome of periodontally healthy people with obesity had both significantly lower bacterial diversity and richness compared with the controls. The genus Prevotella, Granulicatella, Peptostreptococcus, Solobacterium, Catonella, and Mogibacterium were significantly more abundant in the obesity group; meanwhile the genus Haemophilus, Corynebacterium, Capnocytophaga, and Staphylococcus were less abundant in the obesity group. We also performed a functional analysis of the inferred metagenomes, and showed that the salivary community associated with obesity had a stronger signature of immune disease and a decreased functional signature related to environmental adaptation and Xenobiotics biodegradation compared with the normal weight controls. Discussion Our study demonstrates that the microbial diversity and structure of the salivary microbiome in people with obesity are significantly different from those of normal weight controls. These results suggested that changes in the structure and function of salivary microbiome in people with obesity might reflect their susceptibility to oral diseases.

Background/Aims: Treatments targeting cancer stem cells (CSCs) are most effective cancer therapy, whereas determination of CSCs is challenging. We have recently reported that Lgr5-positive cells are cancer stem cells (CSCs) in human skin squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Ginsenoside Rh2 (GRh2) has been shown to significantly inhibit growth of some types of cancers, whereas its effects on the SCC have not been examined. Methods: Here, we transduced human SCC cells with lentivirus carrying GFP reporter under Lgr5 promoter. The transduced SCC cells were treated with different doses of GRh2, and then analyzed cell viability by CCK-8 assay and MTT assay. The effects of GRh2 on Lgr5-positive CSCs were determined by fow cytometry and by tumor sphere formation. Autophagy-associated protein and β-catenin were measured by Western blot. Expression of short hairpin small interfering RNA (shRNA) for Atg7 and β-catenin were used to inhibit autophagy and β-catenin signaling pathway, respectively, as loss-of-function experiments. Results: We found that GRh2 dose-dependently reduced SCC viability, possibly through reduced the number of Lgr5-positive CSCs. GRh2 increased autophagy and reduced β-catenin signaling in SCC cells. Inhibition of autophagy abolished the effects of GRh2 on β-catenin and cell viability, while increasing β-catenin abolished the effects of GRh2 on autophagy and cell viability. Conclusion: Taken together, our data suggest that GRh2 inhibited SCC growth, possibly through reduced the number of Lgr5-positive CSCs. This may be conducted through an interaction between autophagy and β-catenin signaling.
