In this work, we studied four types of cosmological models with different mechanisms driving the accelerated expansion of the universe, include Braneworld models, Chaplygin Gas models, Emergent Dark Energy models, and cosmological torsion models. Considering that the dynamics of these models at low redshifts are very similar and difficult to distinguish, we used the latest and largest UV and X-ray measurements of quasars (QSOs) observations covering the range of redshift $0.009

The $Omh^2(z_i,z_j)$ two point diagnostics was proposed as a litmus test of $\Lambda$CDM model and measurements of cosmic expansion rate $H(z)$ have been extensively used to perform this test. The results obtained so far suggested a tension between observations and predictions of the $\Lambda$CDM model. However, the dataset of $H(z)$ direct measurements from cosmic chronometers and BAO was quite limited. This motivated us to study the performance of this test on a larger sample obtained in an alternative way. In this paper, we present a model-independent approach to calibrate the largest quasar sample. Calibrating quasar samples is essentially constraining the parameters of the linear relation between the $\log$ of the ultraviolet (UV) and X-ray luminosities. This calibration allows quasars to be used as standardized candles. There is a strong correlation between the parameters characterizing the quasar luminosity relation and the cosmological distances inferred from using quasars as standardized candles. We break this degeneracy by using Gaussian process regression to model-independently reconstruct the expansion history of the Universe from the latest type Ia supernova observations. Using the calibrated quasar dataset, we further reconstruct the expansion history up to redshift of $z\sim 7.5$. Finally, we test the consistency between the calibrated quasar sample and the standard $\rm{\Lambda}CDM$ model based on the posterior probability distribution of the GP hyperparameters. Our results show that the quasar sample is in good agreement with the standard $\rm{\Lambda}CDM$ model in the redshift range of the supernova, despite of mildly significant deviations taking place at higher redshifts. Fitting the standard $\rm{\Lambda}CDM$ model to the calibrated quasar sample, we obtain a high value of the matter density parameter $\Omega_m = 0.382^{+0.045}_{-0.042}$, which is marginally consistent with the constraints from other cosmological observations., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

Recently, two classes of quasar samples were identified, which are promising as new cosmological probes extending to higher redshifts. The first sample uses the nonlinear relation between the ultraviolet and X-ray luminosities of quasars to derive luminosity distances, whereas the linear sizes of compact radio quasars in the second sample can serve as standardized rulers, providing angular-diameter distances. In this study, under the assumption of a flat universe, we refreshed the calibration of multiple measurements of high-redshift quasars (in the framework of a cosmological-model-independent method with the newest Hubble parameters data). Furthermore, we placed constraints on four models that characterize the cosmic equation of state ($w$). The obtained results show that: 1) the two quasar samples could provide promising complementary probes at much higher redshifts, whereas compact radio quasars perform better than ultraviolet and X-ray quasars at the current observational level; 2) strong degeneracy between the cosmic equation of state ($w$) and Hubble constant ($H_0$) is revealed, which highlights the importance of independent determination of $H_0$ from time-delay measurements of strongly lensed Quasars; 3)together with other standard ruler probes, such as baryon acoustic oscillation distance measurements, the combined QSO+BAO measurements are consistent with the standard $\Lambda$CDM model at a constant equation of state $w=-1$; 4) ranking the cosmological models, the polynomial parametrization gives a rather good fit among the four cosmic-equation-of-state models, whereas the Jassal-Bagla-Padmanabhan (JBP) parametrization is substantially penalized by the Akaike Information Criterion and Bayesian Information Criterion criterion., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in SCPMA

A model-independent test of the cosmic curvature parameter $\Omega_k$ is very important in cosmology. In order to estimate cosmic curvature from cosmological probes like standard candles, one has to be able to measure the luminosity distance $D_L(z)$, it's derivative with respect to redshift $D'_L(z)$ and independently know the expansion rate $H(z)$ at the same redshift. In this paper, we study how such an idea could be implemented with the future generation of space-based DECi-hertz Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (DECIGO), in combination with cosmic chronometers providing cosmology-independent $H(z)$ data. Our results show that for the Hubble diagram of simulated DECIGO data acting as a new type of standard siren, it would be able to constrain cosmic curvature with the precision of $\Delta \Omega_k= 0.09$ with the currently available sample of 31 measurements of Hubble parameters. In the framework of the third generation ground-based gravitational wave detectors, the spatial curvature is constrained to be $\Delta\Omega_k= 0.13$ for Einstein Telescope (ET). More interestingly, compared to other approaches aiming for model-independent estimations of spatial curvature, our analysis also achieves the reconstruction of the evolution of $\Omega_k(z)$, in the framework of a model-independent method of Gaussian processes (GP) without assuming a specific form. General relativity reproduces main current cosmological observations, assuming the validity of cosmic distance duality relation (CDDR) at all scales and epochs. However, CDDR is poorly tested in the redshift interval between the farthest observed Type Ia supernovae (SN Ia) and that of the Cosmic Microwave background (CMB). We present a new idea of testing the validity of CDDR, through the multiple measurements of high-redshift quasars. Luminosity distances are derived from the relation between the UV and X-ray luminosities of quasars, while angular diameter distances are obtained from the compact structure in radio quasars. This will create a valuable opportunity where two different cosmological distances from the same kind of objects at high redshifts are compared. Our constraints are more stringent than other currently available results based on different observational data and show no evidence for the deviation from CDDR at $z\sim 3$. The gas depletion factor $\gamma(z)$, i.e., the average ratio of the gas mass fraction to the cosmic mean baryon fraction of galaxy clusters, plays a very important role in the cosmological application of the gas mass fraction measurements. In this paper, using the newest catalog of 182 galaxy clusters detected by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) Polarization experiment, we investigate the possible redshift evolution of $\gamma(z)$ through a new cosmology-independent method. The method is based on non-parametric reconstruction using the measurements of Hubble parameters from cosmic chronometers. Unlike hydrodynamical simulations suggesting constant depletion factor, our results reveal the trend of $\gamma(z)$ decreasing with redshift. This result is supported by a parametric model fit as well as by calculations on the reduced ACTPol sample and on the alternative sample of 91 SZ clusters reported earlier in ACT compilation. Discussion of possible systematic effects leaves an open question about validity of the empirical relation $M_{tot}$-$f_{gas}$ obtained on very close clusters. These results might pave the way to explore the hot gas fraction within large radii of galaxy clusters as well as its possible evolution with redshift, which should be studied further on larger galaxy cluster samples in the upcoming X-ray/SZ cluster surveys., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 1 table. Probing the speed of light is as an important test of General Relativity but the measurements of $c$ using objects in the distant universe have been almost completely unexplored. In this letter, we propose an idea to use the multiple measurements of galactic-scale strong gravitational lensing systems with type Ia supernova acting as background sources to estimate the speed of light. This provides an original method to measure the speed of light using objects located at different redshifts which emitted their light in a distant past. Moreover, we predict that strongly lensed SNe Ia observed by the LSST would produce robust constraints on $\Delta c/c$ at the level of $10^{-3}$. Direct measurements of Hubble parameters $H(z)$ are very useful for cosmological model parameters inference. Based on them, Sahni, Shafieloo and Starobinski introduced a two-point diagnostic $Omh^2(z_i, z_j)$ as an interesting tool for testing the validity of the $\Lambda$CDM model. Applying this test they found a tension between observations and predictions of the $\Lambda$CDM model. We use the most comprehensive compilation $H(z)$ data from baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) and differential ages (DA) of passively evolving galaxies to study cosmological models using the Hubble parameters itself and to distinguish whether $\Lambda$CDM model is consistent with the observational data with statistical analysis of the corresponding $Omh^2(z_i, z_j)$ two-point diagnostics. Our results show that presently available $H(z)$ data significantly improve the constraints on cosmological parameters. The corresponding statistical $Omh^2(z_i, z_j)$ two-point diagnostics seems to prefer the quintessence with $w>-1$ over the $\Lambda$CDM model. Better and more accurate prior knowledge of the Hubble constant, will considerably improve the performance of the statistical $Omh^2(z_i, z_j)$ method., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables

We present a new idea of testing the validity of the Friedman-Lema\^{\i}tre-Robertson-Walker metric, through the multiple measurements of galactic-scale strong gravitational lensing systems with type Ia supernovae in the role of sources. Each individual lensing system will provide a model-independent measurement of the spatial curvature parameter referring only to geometrical optics independently of the matter content of the universe. This will create a valuable opportunity to test the FLRW metric directly. Our results show that with hundreds of strongly lensed SNe Ia observed by LSST, one would produce robust constraints on the spatial curvature with accuracy $\Delta \Omega_k=0.04$ comparable to the Planck 2015 results., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, Accepted for publication in Physical Review D

The purpose of this work is to investigate the prospects of using the future standard siren data without redshift measurements to constrain cosmological parameters. With successful detections of gravitational wave (GW) signals an era of GW astronomy has begun. Unlike the electromagnetic domain, GW signals allow direct measurements of luminosity distances to the sources, while their redshifts remain to be measured by identifying electromagnetic counterparts. This leads to significant technical problems for almost all possible BH-BH systems. It is the major obstacle to cosmological applications of GW standard sirens. In this paper, we introduce the general framework of using luminosity distances alone for cosmological inference. The idea is to use the prior knowledge of the redshift probability distribution for coalescing sources from the intrinsic merger rates assessed with population synthesis codes. Then the posterior probability distributions for cosmological parameters can be calculated. We demonstrate the performance of our method on the simulated mock data and show that the luminosity distance measurement would enable an accurate determination of cosmological parameters up to $20%$ uncertainty level. We also find that in order to infer $H_0$ to 1% level with flat $\Lambda$CDM model, we need about $10^5$ events., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. The revised version to be submitted to JCAP

As an important candidate gravity theory alternative to dark energy, a class of $f(R)$ modified gravity, which introduces a perturbation of the Ricci scalar $R$ in the Einstein-Hilbert action, has been extensively applied to cosmology to explain the acceleration of the universe. In this paper, we focus on the recently-released VLBI observations of the compact structure in intermediate-luminosity quasars combined with the angular-diameter-distance measurements from galaxy clusters, which consists of 145 data points performing as individual cosmological standard rulers in the redshift range $0.023\le z\le 2.80$, to investigate observational constraints on two viable models in $f(R)$ theories within the Palatini formalism: $f_1(R)=R-\frac{a}{R^b}$ and $f_2(R)=R-\frac{aR}{R+ab}$. We also combine the individual standard ruler data with the observations of CMB and BAO, which provides stringent constraints. Furthermore, two model diagnostics, $Om(z)$ and statefinder, are also applied to distinguish the two $f(R)$ models and $\Lambda$CDM model. Our results show that (1) The quasars sample performs very well to place constraints on the two $f(R)$ cosmologies, which indicates its potential to act as a powerful complementary probe to other cosmological standard rulers. (2) The $\Lambda$CDM model, which corresponds to $b=0$ in the two $f(R)$ cosmologies is still included within $1\sigma$ range. However, there still exists some possibility that $\Lambda$CDM may not the best cosmological model preferred by the current high-redshift observations. (3) The information criteria indicate that the cosmological constant model is still the best one, while the $f_1(R)$ model gets the smallest observational support. (4) The $f_2(R)$ model, which evolves quite different from $f_1(R)$ model at early times, still significantly deviates from both $f_1(R)$ and $\Lambda$CDM model at the present time., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in JCAP

In this paper, we use multi-frequency angular size measurements of 58 intermediate-luminosity quasars reaching the redshifts $z\sim 3$ and demonstrate that they can be used as standard rulers for cosmological inference. Our results indicate that, for the majority of radio-sources in our sample their angular sizes are inversely proportional to the observing frequency. From the physical point of view it means that opacity of the jet is governed by pure synchrotron self-absorption, i.e. external absorption does not play any significant role in the observed angular sizes at least up to 43 GHz. Therefore, we use the value of the intrinsic metric size of compact milliarcsecond radio quasars derived in a cosmology independent manner from survey conducted at 2 GHz and rescale it properly according to predictions of the conical jet model. This approach turns out to work well and produce quite stringent constraints on the matter density parameter $\Omega_m$ in the flat $\Lambda$CDM model and Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati braneworld model. In this paper, we present a new compiled milliarcsecond compact radio data set of 120 intermediate-luminosity quasars in the redshift range $0.46< z <2.76$. These quasars show negligible dependence on redshifts and intrinsic luminosity, and thus represents, in the standard model of cosmology, a fixed comoving-length of standard ruler. We implement a new cosmology-independent technique to calibrate the linear size of of this standard ruler as $l_m= 11.03\pm0.25$ pc, which is the typical radius at which AGN jets become opaque at the observed frequency $\nu\sim 2$ GHz. In the framework of flat $\Lambda$CDM model, we find a high value of the matter density parameter, $\Omega_m=0.322^{+0.244}_{-0.141}$, and a low value of the Hubble constant, $H_0=67.6^{+7.8}_{-7.4}\; \rm{kms}^{-1}\rm{Mpc}^{-1}$, which is in excellent agreement with the CMB anisotropy measurements by \textit{Planck}. We obtain ${\Omega_m}=0.309^{+0.215}_{-0.151}$, $w=-0.970^{+0.500}_{-1.730}$ at 68.3% CL for the constant $w$ of a dynamical dark-energy model, which demonstrates no significant deviation from the concordance $\Lambda$CDM model. Consistent fitting results are also obtained for other cosmological models explaining the cosmic acceleration, like Ricci dark energy (RDE) or Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) brane-world scenario. While no significant change in $w$ with redshift is detected, there is still considerable room for evolution in $w$ and the transition redshift at which $w$ departing from -1 is located at $z\sim 2.0$. Our results demonstrate that the method extensively investigated in our work on observational radio quasar data can be used to effectively derive cosmological information. Finally, we find the combination of high-redshift quasars and low-redshift clusters may provide an important source of angular diameter distances, considering the redshift coverage of these two astrophysical probes., Comment: 36 pages, 5 tables, 16 figures, A&A, in press

In this paper, by using the recently compiled set of 120 intermediate-luminosity quasars (ILQSO) observed in a single-frequency VLBI survey, we propose an improved model-independent method to probe cosmic curvature parameter $\Omega_k$ and make the first measurement of the cosmic curvature referring to a distant past, with redshifts up to $z\sim 3.0$. Compared with other methods, the proposed one involving the quasar data achieves constraints with higher precision in this redshift range. More importantly, our results indicate that the measured $\Omega_k$ is in good agreement with zero cosmic curvature, implying that there is no significant deviation from a flat Universe. Finally, we investigate the possibility of testing $\Omega_k$ with a much higher accuracy using quasars observed in the future VLBI surveys. It is shown that our method could provide a reliable and tight constraint on the prior $\Omega_k$ and one can expect the zero cosmic curvature to be established at the precision of $\Delta\Omega_k\sim 10^{-2}$ with 250 well-observed radio quasars., Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in Physics of the Dark Universe

Using a new recently compiled milliarcsecond compact radio data set of 120 intermediate-luminosity quasars in the redshift range $0.46< z <2.76$, whose statistical linear sizes show negligible dependence on redshifts and intrinsic luminosity and thus represent standard rulers in cosmology, we constrain three viable and most popular $f(T)$ gravity models, where $T$ is the torsion scalar in teleparallel gravity. Our analysis reveals that constraining power of the quasars data (N=120) is comparable to the Union2.1 SN Ia data (N=580) for all three $f(T)$ models. Together with other standard ruler probes such as Cosmic Microwave Background and Baryon Acoustic Oscillation distance measurements, the present value of the matter density parameter $\Omega_m$ obtained by quasars is much lager than that derived from other observations. For two of the models considered ($f_1$CDM and $f_2$CDM) a small but noticeable deviation from $\Lambda$CDM cosmology is present, while in the framework of $f_3$CDM the effective equation of state may cross the phantom divide line at lower redshifts. These results indicate that intermediate-luminosity quasars could provide an effective observational probe comparable to SN Ia at much higher redsifts, and $f(T)$ gravity is a reasonable candidate for the modified gravity theory.

In this paper, we place constraints on four alternative cosmological models under the assumption of the spatial flatness of the Universe: CPL, EDE, GCG and MPC. A new compilation of 120 compact radio quasars observed by very-long-baseline interferometry, which represents a type of new cosmological standard rulers, are used to test these cosmological models. Our results show that the fits on CPL obtained from the quasar sample are well consistent with those obtained from BAO. For other cosmological models considered, quasars provide constraints in agreement with those derived with other standard probes at $1\sigma$ confidence level. Moreover, the results obtained from other statistical methods including Figure of Merit, $Om(z)$ and statefinder diagnostics indicate that: (1) Radio quasar standard ruler could provide better statistical constraints than BAO for all cosmological models considered, which suggests its potential to act as a powerful complementary probe to BAO and galaxy clusters. (2) Turning to $Om(z)$ diagnostics, CPL, GCG and EDE models can not be distinguished from each other at the present epoch. (3) In the framework of statefinder diagnostics, MPC and EDE will deviate from $\rm{\Lambda}$CDM model in the near future, while GCG model cannot be distinguished from $\rm{\Lambda}$CDM model unless much higher precision observations are available., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, 1 table

A new compilation of $120$ angular-size/redshift data for compact radio quasars from very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) surveys motivates us to revisit the interaction between dark energy and dark matter with these probes reaching high redshifts $z\sim 3.0$. In this paper, we investigate observational constraints on different phenomenological interacting dark energy (IDE) models with the intermediate-luminosity radio quasars acting as individual standard rulers, combined with the newest BAO and CMB observation from Planck results acting as statistical rulers. The results obtained from the MCMC method and other statistical methods including Figure of Merit and Information Criteria show that: (1) Compared with the current standard candle data and standard clock data, the intermediate-luminosity radio quasar standard rulers , probing much higher redshifts, could provide comparable constraints on different IDE scenarios. (2) The interaction between dark energy and dark matter seems to be vanishing or slightly smaller than zero. At the 68.3\% confidence level, the energy is seen transferred from dark matter to dark energy, which implies that those IDE models can not alleviate the coincidence problem or even more sever. However, the strong degeneracies between the interaction term and Hubble constant may contribute to alleviate the tension of $H_0$ between the recent Planck and HST measurements. (3) Concerning the ranking of competing dark energy models, IDE with more free parameters are substantially penalized by the BIC criterion, which agrees very well with the previous results derived from other cosmological probes., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables
