Abstract The performance improvement of CMOS computer fails to meet the enormous data processing requirement of artificial intelligence progressively. The memristive neural network is one of the most promising circuit hardwares to make a breakthrough. This paper proposes a novel memristive synaptic circuit that is composed of four MOS transistors and one memristor (4T1M). The 4T1M synaptic circuit provides flexible control strategies to change memristance or respond to the input signal. Applying the 4T1M synaptic circuit as the cell of memristive crossbar array, based on the structure and algorithm of the back-propagation (BP) neural network, this paper proposes circuit design of the memristive crossbar-based BP neural network. By reusing the 4T1M memristive crossbar array, the computations in the forward-propagation process and back-propagation process of BP neural network are accomplished on the memristive crossbar-based circuit to accelerate the computing speed. The 4T1M memristive crossbar array can change all the cells’ memristance at a time, accordingly, the memristive crossbar-based BP neural network can realize synchronous memristance adjustment. The proposed memristive crossbar-based BP neural network is then evaluated through experiments involving XOR logic operation, iris classification, and MNIST handwritten digit recognition. The experimental results present fewer iterations or higher classification accuracies. Further, the comprehensive comparisons with the existing memristive BP neural networks highlight the advantages of the proposed memristive crossbar-based BP neural network, which achieves the fastest memristance adjustment speed using relatively few components.

Multimodal physiological signals play a pivotal role in drivers’ perception of work stress. However, the scarcity of labels and the multitude of modalities render the utilization of physiological signals for driving cognitive alertness detection challenging. We thus propose a multimodal physiological signal detection model based on self-supervised learning. First, in order to mine the intrinsic information of data and enable data to highlight effective information, we introduce a multiscale entropy (MSE) evoked attention mechanism. Secondly, the multimodal patches undergo processing through a novel cascaded attention mechanism. This attention mechanism is rooted in patch-level interactions within each modality, progressively integrating and interacting with other modalities in a cascading manner, thereby mitigating computational complexity. Moreover, a multimodal uncertainty-aware module is devised to effectively cope with intricate variations in the data. This module enhances its generalization ability through the incorporation of uncertain resampling. Experiments were conducted on the DriveDB dataset and the CogPilot dataset with both the linear probing and the fine-tuning evaluation protocols. Experimental results in subject-dependent setting show that our model significantly outperforms previous competitive baselines. In the linear probing evaluation, our model achieves on average 6.26%, 6.64%, and 7.75% improvements in Accuracy (Acc), Recall (Rec), and F1 Score. It also outperforms other models by 7.96% in Acc, 9.13% in Rec, and 9.2% in F1 using the fine-tuning evaluation. Furthermore, our model also demonstrates robust performance in subject-independent setting.

Emotion recognition from physiological signals (ERPS) has drawn tremendous attention and can be potentially applied to numerous fields. Since physiological signals are nonstationary time series with high sampling frequency, it is challenging to directly extract features from them. Additionally, there are 2 major challenges in ERPS: (a) how to adequately capture the correlations between physiological signals at different times and between different types of physiological signals and (b) how to effectively minimize the negative effect caused by temporal covariate shift (TCS). To tackle these problems, we propose a domain generalization and residual network-based approach for emotion recognition from physiological signals (DGR-ERPS). We first pre-extract time- and frequency-domain features from the original time series to compose a new time series. Then, in order to fully extract the correlation information of different physiological signals, these time series are converted into 3D image data to serve as input for a residual-based feature encoder (RBFE). In addition, we introduce a domain generalization-based technique to mitigate the issue posed by TCS. We have conducted extensive experiments on 2 real-world datasets, and the results indicate that our DGR-ERPS achieves superior performance under both TCS and non-TCS scenarios.

Introduction: There is growing evidence of research indicating that the gut microbiota is involved in the development of sarcopenia. Nevertheless, there exists a notable deficiency in comprehension concerning the connection between irregularities in the intestinal microbiome and metabolic processes in older individuals suffering from sarcopenia.Methods: To analyze fecal samples obtained from a cohort of 30 older patients diagnosed with sarcopenia as well as 30 older patients without sarcopenia, this study employed 16S rDNA sequencing and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS)-based non-targeted metabolomics profiling techniques.Results: As a result, we found that 29 genera and 172 metabolites were significantly altered in the sarcopenic patients. Among them, Blautia, Lachnospiraceae_unclassified, and Subdoligranulum were the bacteria with a potential diagnostic value for sarcopenia diagnosis. Correlation analysis between clinical indices and these gut bacteria suggested that the IL-6 level was negatively correlated with Blautia. Function prediction analysis demonstrated that 17 Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways differ significantly between sarcopenic and non-sarcopenic patients. The primary classes of metabolites identified in the study included lipids and lipid-like molecules, organic acids and derivatives, and organoheterocyclic compounds. KEGG enrichment analysis showed that purine metabolism, arginine and proline metabolism, alanine, aspartate, and glutamate metabolism, butanoate metabolism, and histidine metabolism may contribute to the development of sarcopenia. The correlation study on gut microbiota and metabolites found that Lachnospiraceae_unclassified was positively associated with seven metabolites that were more abundant in the non-sarcopenia group and negatively correlated with three metabolites that were more abundant in the sarcopenia group. In addition, Subdoligranulum was positively correlated with seven metabolites that were lacking in sarcopenia and negatively correlated with two metabolites that were enriching in sarcopenia. Moreover, Blautia was positively associated with xanthosine.Discussion: We conducted a study on the intestinal microbiota and metabolic profile of elderly individuals with sarcopenia, offering a comprehensive analysis of the overall ecosystem. Through this investigation, we were able to validate existing research on the gut–muscle axis and further investigate potential pathogenic processes and treatment options for sarcopenia.

Research and development of electroencephalogram (EEG) based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have advanced rapidly, partly due to deeper understanding of the brain and wide adoption of sophisticated machine learning approaches for decoding the EEG signals. However, recent studies have shown that machine learning algorithms are vulnerable to adversarial attacks. This paper proposes to use narrow period pulse for poisoning attack of EEG-based BCIs, which makes adversarial attacks much easier to implement. One can create dangerous backdoors in the machine learning model by injecting poisoning samples into the training set. Test samples with the backdoor key will then be classified into the target class specified by the attacker. What most distinguishes our approach from previous ones is that the backdoor key does not need to be synchronized with the EEG trials, making it very easy to implement. The effectiveness and robustness of the backdoor attack approach is demonstrated, highlighting a critical security concern for EEG-based BCIs and calling for urgent attention to address it.

Background: It is unclear whether serum calcium on admission is associated with clinical outcomes in dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). In this study, we conducted a retrospective study spanning a decade to investigate the prognostic value of baseline calcium in elderly patients with DCM. Methods: A total of 1,089 consecutive elderly patients (age ≥60 years) diagnosed with DCM were retrospectively enrolled from January 2010 to December 2019. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to investigate the association of serum calcium with their clinical outcomes. Results: In this study, the average age of the subjects was 68.36 ± 6.31 years. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis showed that serum calcium level had a great sensitivity and specificity for predicting in-hospital death, with an AUC of 0.732. Kaplan–Meier survival analysis showed that patients with a serum calcium >8.62 mg/dL had a better prognosis than those with a serum calcium ≤8.62 mg/dL (log-rank χ2 40.84, p < 0.001). After adjusting for several common risk factors, a serum calcium ≤8.62 mg/dL was related to a higher risk of long-term mortality (HR: 1.449; 95% CI: 1.115~1.882; p = 0.005). Conclusions: Serum calcium level could be served as a simple and affordable tool to evaluate patients’ prognosis in DCM.

In this study, mineralogical and elemental geochemical characteristics of massive sulfide samples collected from the Jade hydrothermal field, located in the Izena depression in the central graben of the Okinawa Trough, were analyzed by means of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). The results show that the mineralization in the Jade hydrothermal field can be divided into Zn-Cu-Pb-rich massive sulfides and Zn-Fe-rich massive sulfides. The former is composed of sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, pyrite, and anglesite, which is the product of the low-temperature alteration of galena. The latter is mainly composed of sphalerite, pyrite, marcasite, and traces of galena. Cu and Zn in pyrite may exist in the form of microinclusions, while Ag and Pb may exist in pyrite in the form of fine galena inclusions containing Ag. Fe and Cu may enter sphalerite in the form of ion replacement. Zn may enter chalcopyrite in the form of ion replacement. Consistent with the previous understanding, the metal elements in the hydrothermal liquid system in the Jade hydrothermal field mostly migrated as sulfur complexes, and when the hydrothermal fluid mixes with seawater, the physical and chemical conditions of the fluid change, resulting in sulfide mineral precipitation. However, the chemical structure of chalcopyrite is still controversial, which restricts the understanding of the substitution mechanism of trace elements during chalcopyrite precipitation.

Two strains, 81s02T and 334s03T, were isolated from the sediment core near the hydrothermal field of southern Okinawa Trough. The cells of both strains were observed to be rod-shaped, non-gliding, Gram-staining negative, yellow-pigmented, facultatively anaerobic, catalase and oxidase positive, and showing optimum growth at 30 °C and pH 7.5. The strains 81s02T and 334s03T were able to tolerate up to 10% and 9% (w/v) NaCl concentration, respectively. Based on phylogenomic analysis, the average nucleotide identity (ANI) and the digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) values between the two strains and the nearest phylogenetic neighbors of the genus Muricauda were in range of 78.0–86.3% and 21.5–33.9%, respectively. The strains 81s02T and 334s03T shared 98.1% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to each other but were identified as two distinct species based on 81.4–81.5% ANIb, 85.5–85.6% ANIm and 25.4% dDDH values calculated using whole genome sequences. The strains 81s02T and 334s03T shared the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to M. lutimaris SMK-108T (98.7%) and M. aurea BC31-1-A7T (98.8%), respectively. The major fatty acid of strains 81s02T and 334s03T were identified similarly as iso-C15:0, iso-C17:0 3-OH and iso-C15:1 G, and the major polar lipids of the both strains consisted of phosphatidylethanolamine and two unidentified lipids. The strains contained MK-6 as their predominant menaquinone. The genomic G+C contents of strains 81s02T and 334s03T were determined to be 41.6 and 41.9 mol%, respectively. Based on the phylogenetic and phenotypic characteristics, both strains are considered to represent two novel species of the genus Muricauda, and the names Muricauda okinawensis sp. nov. and Muricauda yonaguniensis sp. nov. are proposed for strains 81s02T (=KCTC 92889T = MCCC 1K08502T) and 334s03T (=KCTC 92890T = MCCC 1K08503T).

The Yonaguni Knoll IV is an active seafloor hydrothermal system associated with submarine silicic volcanism located in the “cross back-arc volcanic trail” (CBVT) in the southwestern Okinawa Trough. However, the behavior of volatiles during magmatic differentiation in the shallow silicic magma chamber is unclear. Here, the volatile contents of apatite inclusions trapped in different phenocrysts (orthopyroxene and amphibole) and microphenocrysts in the rhyolite from the Yonaguni Knoll IV hydrothermal field were analyzed by using electron microprobe analysis, which aims to track the behavior of volatiles in the shallow magma chamber. Notably, the ‘texturally constrained’ apatites showed a decreasing trend of XCl/XOH and XF/XCl ratios. Based on the geochemical analyses in combination with thermodynamic modeling, we found that the studied apatites were consistent with the mode of volatile-undersaturated crystallization. Therefore, volatiles were not saturated in the early stage of magmatic differentiation in the shallow rhyolitic magma chamber, and consequently, the metal elements were retained in the rhyolitic melt and partitioned into crystalline magmatic sulfides. Additionally, previous studies suggested that the shallow rhyolitic magma chamber was long-lived and periodically replenished by mafic magma. The injection of volatile-rich and oxidized subduction-related mafic magmas can supply abundant volatiles and dissolve magmatic sulfide in the shallow magma chamber. These processes are important for the later-stage of volatile exsolution, while the forming metal-rich magmatic fluids contribute to the overlying Yonaguni Knoll IV hydrothermal system.

Submarine volcanic eruptions can be destructive for marine environments and resources. Magma mixing is considered to be an important trigger for volcanic eruptions. Determining the magma residence time from mixing to eruption is conducive to assessing the stability of magmatic systems, especially beneath the seafloor where in situ volcano monitoring is inaccessible. Here, we estimated the timescale of magma mixing beneath the Iheya Ridge, Okinawa Trough, which is characterized by pervasive magma mixing. We focused on andesitic and rhyolitic magma generated by basalt–rhyolite mixing and rhyolite–rhyolite mixing, respectively. By taking advantage of the Mg diffusion chronometry, we showed that the andesitic magma resided in the magma chamber for very short time (~0.1–0.3 years), whereas the residence time of the rhyolitic magma was much longer (~80–120 years). The different times might be in part related to the different rheology of the mixed magmas. The short residence time of the andesitic magma suggested efficient magma mixing that allowed the andesites to be erupted, which may explain the appearance of scarce andesites in basalt–rhyolite dominant settings. However, the rapid mixing and eruption of magma is a disadvantage for the development and preservation of seafloor hydrothermal resources. Therefore, we suggest that the stability of sub-seafloor magma systems must be evaluated during the assessment of seafloor sulfide resources and mining prospects.

Mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORBs), produced at mid-ocean ridge where the continents and subduction zones are distant, are the product of partial melting of the upper mantle and their chemical composition can provide information about the mantle itself. The geochemical characteristics of MORBs enable us to be more informed about the geological processes of the upper mantle below the mid-ocean ridge, and assist us in understanding mantle heterogeneity and geodynamic processes. In this paper, new data of major elements, trace elements, and Nd-Hf isotopes of south mid-Atlantic ridge (SMAR) 18–21°S MORBs are presented. TAS diagram shows that the samples belong to subalkaline basalt compositional field. Trace elements (e.g., (La/Sm)N = 0.49–0.79) show that the samples are N-MORBs. However, the primitive mantle-normalized trace element patterns showed that the studied samples were clearly enriched in Rb, U, Pb, and other fluid-mobile elements. Meanwhile, the trace element ratios, such as Nb/U and Ce/Pb, are also significantly different from the typical N-MORB. Combined with the Nd-Hf isotopic composition, we propose that these anomalies are not related to continental crust material, delaminated subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM), recycled sediments, direct supply of mantle plume, nor are they the result of subduction directly affecting the mantle source, but are caused by the incorporation of mantle material modified by subduction.

The ferromanganese deposit is a type of marine mineral resource rich in Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu. Its growth process is generally multi-stage, and the guyot environment and seawater geochemical characteristics have a great impact on the growth process. Here, we use a scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to test and analyze the texture morphology, microstructure, mineralogical features, geochemical features of ferromanganese crusts deposits at different distribution locations on Caiwei Guyot. The ferromanganese deposits of Caiwei Guyot are ferromanganese nodules on the slope and board ferromanganese crusts on the mountaintop edge, which are both of hydrgenetic origin. Hydrgenetic origin reflects that the metal source is oxic seawater. Global palaeo-ocean events control the geochemistry compositions and growth process of ferromanganese crusts and the nodule. Ferromanganese crusts that formed from the late Cretaceous on the mountaintop edge have a rough surface with black botryoidal shapes, showing an environment with strong hydrodynamic conditions, while the ferromanganese nodule that formed from the Miocene on the slope has an oolitic surface as a result of water depth. What is more, nanoscale or micron-scale diagenesis may occur during the growth process, affecting microstructure, mineralogical and geochemical features.

Strontium (Sr), hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O) in vent fluids are important for understanding the water–rock interaction and hydrothermal flux in hydrothermal systems. We have analyzed the Sr, H and O isotopic compositions of seawater, vent fluid and hydrothermal plume samples in the Kueishantao hydrothermal field, as well as their calcium (Ca), total sulfur (S), Sr, arsenic (As), stibium (Sb), chlorine (Cl) and manganese (Mn) concentrations for understanding the origin and processes of fluids. The results suggest that most As, Sb and Mn are leached from andesitic rocks into the fluids, and most Ca and Cl remained in the deep reaction zone during the fluid–andesitic rock interaction. The ranges of 87Sr/86Sr, δDV-SMOW and δ18OV-SMOW values in the yellow spring, white spring and plumes are small. The 87Sr/86Sr, δDV-SMOW and δ18OV-SMOW values of fluids and plumes are like those of ambient seawater, indicating that the Sr, H and O of vent fluids and hydrothermal plumes are derived primarily from seawater. This suggests that the interaction of andesite and subseafloor fluid is of short duration and results in the majority of As, Sb and Mn being released into fluids, while most Ca and Cl remained in the deep reaction zone. In addition, there was no significant variation of Sr, H and O isotopic compositions in the upwelling fluid, keeping the similar isotopic compositions of seawater. There are obvious correlations among the pH values, As and Sb concentrations, and H isotopic compositions of the vent fluids and hydrothermal plumes, implying that the As and Sb concentrations and H isotopic compositions can trace the dispersion of plumes in the ambient seawater. According to the Sr concentrations and 87Sr/86Sr values, the water/rock ratios are 3076~8124, which is consistent with the idea that the interaction between fluid and andesite at the subseafloor is of short duration. The hydrothermal flux of Sr discharged from the yellow spring into the seawater is between 2.06 × 104 and 2.26 × 104 mol/yr, and the white spring discharges 1.18 × 104~1.26 × 104 mol/yr Sr if just andesites appear in the reaction zone.

Due to some unfavorable factors, how to accurately register point sets is still a challenging task. In this paper, an effective point set registration approach is proposed based on a hybrid structure constrain. In the proposed method, a composite weight coefficient is determined based on the amplitudes of the vector and the corresponding projection of neighbor points. Given the composite weight coefficient, a local structure constraint is constructed as a linear combination of the vectors of neighbor points. A Gaussian mixture model is established by utilizing the local structure constraint and a global structure constraint based on the motion coherence theory. In addition, an expectation-maximization algorithm is derived to solve the unknown variables in the proposed model. For the constraint terms, an update strategy is utilized to obtain the approximately optimal weight coefficients. Compared to the state-of-the-art approaches, the proposed model is more robust due to the use of multiple effective constraints. Experimental results on some widely used data sets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model.

Non-Rigid Structure from Motion (NRSfM) is the task of reconstructing the 3D point set of a non-rigid object from an ensemble of images with 2D correspondences, which has been a long-lasting challenging research topic. Compared to the state-of-the-art methods for NRSfM, the Procrustean Markov Process (PMP) model has obtained a relatively good performance. However, the estimation error and the convergence time of the PMP model will increase simultaneously when noise is present. To address this problem, in this paper, a coherent constraint is constructed to suppress the noise in the initialization step of the PMP algorithm. Moreover, an Accelerated Expectation Maximization (AEM) algorithm is devised to optimize the PMP estimation model. Experimental results on several widely used sequences demonstrate that our proposed algorithm achieves state-of-the-art performance, as well as its effectiveness and feasibility.

Studies of the element contents and isotopic characteristics of sulfide minerals from seafloor hydrothermal sulfide deposits are a significant method of investigating seawater-fluid mixing and fluid-rock and/or sediment interactions in hydrothermal systems. The seafloor hydrothermal sulfide ores from the Noho hydrothermal field (NHF) in the Okinawa Trough (OT) consist of pyrrhotite, isocubanite, sphalerite, galena, and amorphous silica. The Rh, Ag, Sb, and Tl contents mostly increase in galena as the fluid temperature decreases in the late ore-forming stage. In the sulfide minerals, the rare earth elements are mainly derived from the hydrothermal fluids, while the volcanic rocks and/or sediments are the sources of the sulfur and lead in the sulfide minerals. After the precipitation of galena, the redox state becomes oxidizing, and the pH value of the fluid increases, which is accompanied by the formation of amorphous silica. Finally, neither pyrite nor marcasite has been observed in association with pyrrhotite in the NHF sulfides, likely indicating that the amount of sulfur was limited in this hydrothermal system, and most of the residual Fe was incorporated into the sphalerite. This suggests that the later pyrite and/or marcasite precipitation in the seafloor hydrothermal sulfide deposit is controlled by the sulfur content of the fluid. Furthermore, it is possible to use hydrothermal sulfides and their inclusions to trace subseafloor fluid circulation processes.

As one of the youngest back-arc basins, the evolutionary behavior of magmatic volatiles in the Eastern Manus Basin has been poorly studied. Recently, apatite has received widespread attention for its powerful function in recording information on magmatic volatiles. In this paper, by determining the major element compositions and primary volatile abundances (F, Cl, SO3) of apatites in dacite, we analyze the compositions of volatiles before magma eruption in the Eastern Manus Basin, as well as their indications for magmatic oxygen fugacity and petrogenesis, so as to improve the study about the evolution of magmatic volatiles in this region. Experimental data indicate that apatite saturation temperatures range from 935 to 952 °C. All the apatites are magmatic apatites with F contents of 0.87−1.39 wt.%, Cl contents of 1.24−1.70 wt.%, and SO3 ≤ 0.06 wt.%. Analysis reveals that the apatites in this study crystallized from volatile-undersaturated melts, so their chemical compositions can be used as indicators of magmatic compositions. According to calculations, the minimum S concentrations of the host melts range from 2−65 ppm or 8−11 ppm. The crystallization and separation of magnetite caused the reduction state of melts, and the relatively low oxygen fugacity (ΔFMQ = −0.2 ± 0.9) caused low SO3 contents in apatites. In addition, F and Cl contents of the host melt were calculated to be 185−448 ppm and 1059−1588 ppm, corresponding to the H2O contents of 1.4−2.1% and 1.2−1.5% (error ± 30−40%), respectively. The high Cl/F ratio and H2O contents of samples indicate the addition of slab-derived fluids in the mantle source region of the Eastern Manus Basin. High F contents of the melts may be influenced by F-rich sediments, as well as the release of F from lawsonite and phengite decomposition. High Cl appears to originate from the dual influence of subduction-released fluids and Cl-rich seawater-derived components. Further, it is estimated that 14−21% of the total Cl concentrations in melts were added directly from subduction-released fluids, or higher.

Gold and other metals (Cu, Zn, Ag, etc.) are enriched in vent fluids, approximately 3–5 orders of magnitude higher than those in seawater, and this leads to the formation of sulfide enrichment in Cu, Zn, Au, and Ag deposited on the mid-ocean ridge and island arcs, as well as in back-arc basins. We developed a device that can extract the elements such as Cu, Zn, Au, and Ag from the vent fluids before the formation of the hydrothermal plume, sulfide deposit, and metalliferous sediment at the seafloor over a long period, which is beneficial to collecting hydrothermal resources effectively and avoiding the damage of ecological environments caused by mining the polymetallic sulfide resources. The application of this device will have significance for the development and utilization of seafloor hydrothermal resources, the sustainable development and implementation of the blue economy, and the construction of the marine ecological civilization in the future.

The provenance of sediments in the Southern Okinawa Trough since the late Holocene has been a controversial scientific issue during the past 20 years. Previous studies based on isotope proxies generally indicated Taiwanese rivers as the primary source in the Southern Okinawa Trough since the late Holocene. Based on the zircon U-Pb geochronology, this study identified how sediments from the Yangtze River/East China Sea shelf had contributed significantly to the Southern Okinawa Trough in the past 624 a BP. Notably, this study found two Paleoarchean zircon grains, which indicated they originated from older orogenic belts. These data shed new light on the provenance of sediments, and a partial supply from the mainland of China cannot be excluded.

The in situ element concentrations and the sulfur (S), and lead (Pb) isotopic compositions in anglesite were investigated for samples from seafloor hydrothermal fields in the Okinawa Trough (OT), Western Pacific. Determining the influence of subduction input on back-arc basin magmatism is important for understanding material transfer and circulation in subduction zones. Although the mantle source of Okinawa Trough (OT) magmas is widely accepted to be modified by subducted components, the role of slab-derived fluids is poorly defined. Here, major element, trace element, and Li, O and Mg isotopic compositions of volcanic lavas from the middle OT (MOT) and southern OT (SOT) were analyzed. Compared with the MOT volcanic lavas, the T9-1 basaltic andesite from the SOT exhibited positive Pb anomalies, significantly lower Nd/Pb and Ce/Pb ratios, and higher Ba/La ratios, indicating that subducted sedimentary components affected SOT magma compositions. The δ7Li, δ18O, and δ26Mg values of the SOT basaltic andesite (−5.05‰ to 4.98‰, 4.83‰ to 5.80‰ and −0.16‰ to −0.09‰, respectively) differed from those of MOT volcanic lavas. Hence, the effect of the Philippine Sea Plate subduction component, (low δ7Li and δ18O and high δ26Mg) on magmas in the SOT was clearer than that in the MOT. This contrast likely appears because the amounts of fluids and/or melts derived from altered oceanic crust (AOC, lower δ18O) and/or subducted sediment (lower δ7Li, higher δ18O and δ26Mg) injected into magmas in the SOT are larger than those in the MOT and because the injection ratio between subducted AOC and sediment is always >1 in the OT. The distance between the subducting slab and overlying magma may play a significant role in controlling the differences in subduction components injected into magmas between the MOT and SOT.

Objective. The effects of Ganoderma lucidum polysaccharide (GLP) on the proliferation and migration of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cells (HSC-3) were investigated in this study. Methods. Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cells (HSC-3) were cultured in vitro and were treated with different concentrations of GLP. CCK-8 assay and scratch assay were then used to detect the inhibitory effect of GLP on these cells. qRT-PCR and western blot were used to measure the expression changes of the genes involved in the miR-188 and β-catenin signaling pathways. Results. GLP had significant cytotoxicity to HSC-3 cells and was capable of inhibiting the proliferation and migration of HSC-3 cells. GLP upregulated the expression of miR-188 in HSC-3 cells and via which inhibited the proliferation and migration of HSC-3 cells. In addition, miR-188 inhibited the activation of the β-catenin signaling pathway through its target BCL9. Conclusions. GLP inhibited the proliferation and migration of OSCC cells (HSC-3) by regulating the miR-188/BCL9/β-catenin signaling pathway. The results in this study provided a theoretical basis for the treatment of OSCC with GLP.

The composition of hydrothermal plumes reflects the physical and chemical characteristics of seafloor hydrothermal fluids, which in turn reflects the host rock and subseafloor reaction conditions as well as the water column processes that act to alter the plumes as they disperse and age. Here, we show that the turbidity, current, pH value, dissolved Fe (dFe), and dissolved Mn (dMn) compositions of hydrothermal plumes can be used to understand the spatial distribution and source of hydrothermal systems in the submarine geological environment. Data were obtained from 18 hydrocast stations, among which the water column samples were collected at 8 stations during the MANUS cruise of R/V KEXUE in 2015. The results showed that the Satanic Mills plume and Fenway plume rose approximately 140 m and 220 m above the seafloor, respectively. In the Satanic Mills plume, dFe remained longer than dMn during lateral plume dispersal. There was a clear intersection of the Satanic Mills plume and Fenway plume between 1625 m and 1550 m in the PACMANUS hydrothermal field, and the varied dispersion trends of the mixed plumes were affected by current velocities at different depths. The physical and chemical properties of the seawater columns in the Manus Basin were affected by the input of high-Mn, high-Fe, and low-Mg vent fluids. The turbidity and dFe, dMn, and dissolved Mg concentrations in the sections of the plumes proximal to the Satanic Mills, Fenway, and Desmos vent sites were generally higher (turbidity, Mn, and Fe) and lower (Mg) than those in the sections of the plumes that were more distal from the vent sites. This implied that the plumes proximal to their vent fluid sources, which were interpreted to have relatively young ages, dispersed chemically over time, and their concentrations became more similar to those of the plumes that were more distal from their vent fluid sources.

Heavy mineral assemblages have been widely used to effectively trace sediment sources. Heavy mineral assemblages are rarely used in research to trace sediment sources in the southern Okinawa Trough compared with geochemical proxies. In this study, the TESCAN Integrated Mineral Analyzer (TIMA) revealed the full-size heavy mineral assemblages in the five layers of the core sediment H4-S2 in the southern Okinawa Trough. During the past 700 years, the heavy mineral assemblages in the sediments of the southern Okinawa Trough were very similar to the East China Sea shelf/Yangtze River, mainly composed of mica and chlorite; dolomite; actinolite; and hematite/magnetite. The grain size distribution of heavy minerals is in the clay–sand range and mainly in silt. Actinolite and hornblende can indicate the supply of sediments from the East China Sea shelf/Yangtze River to the southern Okinawa Trough. Due to their complex sources, pyrite, epidote, and hematite/magnetite are not adequate indicators for distinguishing between the different provenance areas. Because previous studies have used a variety of analytical methods, especially using heavy liquids with different densities, dolomite cannot be used as a marker for sediments on the Yangtze River/East China Sea shelf. Therefore, the East China Sea shelf/Yangtze River is a vital provenance of sediments from the southern Okinawa Trough since the late Holocene period.

Abstract Organophosphorus (OP) insecticides play an important role in pest control. Many OP insecticides have been removed from the market because of their high toxicity to humans. We designed and synthesized a new OP insecticide with the goal of providing a low cost, and less toxic insecticide. The mode of action of O, O-diethyl O-(4-(5-phenyl-4, 5-dihydroisoxazol-3-yl) phenyl) phosphorothioate (XP-1408) was studied in Drosophila melanogaster. Bioassays showed that XP-1408 at a concentration of 50 mg/L delayed larval development. Molecular docking into Drosophila acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and voltage-gated sodium channels suggested that XP-1408 fitted into their active sites and could be inhibitory. Whole-cell patch clamp recordings indicated that XP-1408 exhibited synergistic effects involving the inhibition of cholinergic synaptic transmission and blockage of voltage-gated potassium (Kv) channels and sodium (Nav) channels. In conclusion, the multiple actions of XP-1408 rendered it as a lead compound for formulating OP insecticides with a novel mode of action.

Skeletal muscle injury is one of the most common injuries in sports medicine. Our previous study found that macrophage depletion impairs muscle regeneration and that mechano growth factor (MGF) may play an important role in this process. However, whether injection of MGF protects against impaired muscle regeneration after macrophage depletion has not been explored. Therefore, we generated a muscle contusion and macrophage depletion mouse model and injected MGF into the damaged muscle. Comprehensive morphological and genetic analyses were performed on the injured skeletal muscle after macrophage depletion and MGF injection. The results showed that injection of MGF did not exert a protective effect on muscle fiber regeneration; however, it did decrease fibrosis in the contused skeletal muscle after macrophage depletion. Moreover, MGF injection decreased the expression of muscle inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-1β, and TGF-β), chemokines (CCL2, CCL5, and CXCR4), oxidative stress factors (gp91phox) and matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-1, MMP-2, MMP-9, MMP-10, and MMP-14). These results suggest that the impairment of skeletal muscle regeneration induced by macrophage depletion could be partly ameliorated by MGF injection and that inflammatory cytokines, oxidative stress factors, chemokines, and MMP may be involved in this process.

Background: Though the mechanisms of skeletal muscle regeneration are deeply understood, those involved in muscle contusion, one of the most common muscle injuries in sports medicine clinics, are not. The objective of this study is to explore the mechanisms involved in muscle regeneration after contusion injury. Methods: In this study, a total of 72 mice were used. Eight of them were randomly chosen for the control group, while the rest were subjected to muscle contusion. Subsequently, their gastrocnemius muscles were harvested at different time points. The changes in muscle morphology were assessed by hematoxylin and eosin (HE) stain. In addition, the gene expression was analyzed by real-time polymerase chain reaction. Results: The data showed that the expression of many genes, i.e., specific markers of immune cells and satellite cells, regulatory factors for muscle regeneration, cytokines, and chemokines, increased in the early stages of recovery, especially in the first 3 days. Furthermore, there were strict rules in the expression of these genes. However, almost all the genes returned to normal at 14 days post-injury. Conclusion: The sequence of immune cells invaded after muscle contusion was neutrophils, M1 macrophages and M2 macrophages. Some CC (CCL2, CCL3, and CCL4) and CXC (CXCL10) chemokines may be involved in the chemotaxis of these immune cells. HGF may be the primary factor to activate the satellite cells after muscle contusion. Moreover, 2 weeks are needed to recover when acute contusion happens as used in this study.

Detrital apatite is a promising accessory mineral for reliable fingerprinting of the protolith composition of detrital sediment. Here, we present the geochemical compositions of detrital apatites from four sections of a high-resolution (~140 cm/kyr) sedimentary archive from the southern Okinawa Trough (SOT) for constraining sediment source rock types and establishing changes in provenance. A series of diagrams based on the geochemical data show that apatites in Section 1 derived mainly from mafic/intermediate rocks, while apatites in the three younger sections largely originated from mafic/intermediate rocks and acid rocks. Further, the four sections included a few contributions of apatites from alkaline rocks and metamorphic rocks. Through a comprehensive analysis of controlling factors and regional stratigraphy in the study area, we concluded that sediments in the SOT are the weathering/erosion products of sedimentary and meta-sedimentary rocks in the western and northeastern Taiwan Island, with ultimate sources containing a wide variety of rock types. The sediment from rivers in eastern Taiwan did not significantly contribute to deposition in the SOT. Apatites in Sections 2−4 showed strong geochemical similarity but differed from those in Section 1, indicating that the types of weathered/eroded sedimentary rocks in the weathering profile of river drainage basins of Taiwan Island changed in Section 2 (2010−1940 cal. yr BP) and have remained stable since then.

Studies of the major components of hydrothermal plumes in seafloor hydrothermal fields are critical for an improved understanding of biogeochemical cycles and the large-scale distribution of elements in the submarine environment. The composition of major components in hydrothermal plume water column samples from 25 stations has been investigated in the middle and southern Okinawa Trough. The physical and chemical properties of hydrothermal plume water in the Okinawa Trough have been affected by input of the Kuroshio current, and its influence on hydrothermal plume water from the southern Okinawa Trough to the middle Okinawa Trough is reduced. The anomalous layers of seawater in the hydrothermal plume water columns have higher K+, Ca2+, Mn2+, B3+, Ca2+/SO42-, and Mn2+/Mg2+ ratios and higher optical anomalies than other layers. The Mg2+, SO42-, Mg2+/Ca2+, and SO42-/Mn2+ ratios of the anomalous layers are lower than other layers in the hydrothermal plume water columns and are consistent with concentrations in hydrothermal vent fluids in the Okinawa Trough. This suggests that the chemical variations of hydrothermal plumes in the Tangyin hydrothermal field, like other hydrothermal fields, result in the discharge of high K+, Ca2+, and B3+ and low Mg2+ and SO42- fluid. Furthermore, element ratios (e.g., Sr2+/Ca2+, Ca2+/Cl−) in hydrothermal plume water columns were found to be similar to those in average seawater, indicating that Sr2+/Ca2+ and Ca2+/Cl− ratios of hydrothermal plumes might be useful proxies for chemical properties of seawater. The hydrothermal K+, Ca2+, Mn2+, and B3+ flux to seawater in the Okinawa Trough is about 2.62–873, 1.04–326, 1.30–76.4, and 0.293–34.7 × 106 kg per year, respectively. The heat flux is about 0.159–1,973 × 105 W, which means that roughly 0.0006% of ocean heat is supplied by seafloor hydrothermal plumes in the Okinawa Trough.

Studies on the concentrations of arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb) in seawater columns are very important for tracing hydrothermal plumes and understanding fluid characteristics of seafloor hydrothermal systems. The total As, Sb, Mn, and Cl− concentrations of three hydrothermal plume seawater column samples have been studied at Stations 18G, 18K, and 18B in the eastern Manus back-arc basin, Bismarck Sea, Papua New Guinea. At Stations 18G and 18K, the plumes above North Su and near the Suzette site in the SuSu Knolls hydrothermal field are both enriched in As, Sb, and Mn and depleted in Cl, as a result of contribution of As-Sb-Mn-enriched and Cl-depleted vent fluid outputs to the hydrothermal plume, which is most likely generated in the subseafloor by fluid-rock interaction, magma degassing, or phase separation (boiling of hydrothermal fluid). The plume at Station 18B is enriched in As, Sb, Mn, and Cl, suggesting that As-Sb-Mn-Cl-enriched fluid discharges from vents, which have been generated by fluid-rock interaction. The concentrations of As and Sb anomalous layers, like manganese (Mn), are higher than those of the other layers in the three hydrothermal plume seawater columns. Based on the analysis of geochemical and mineralogical compositions, deep sea clay sediment characteristics and their material sources were examined in the eastern flank of the Gagua Ridge. The mineralogy mainly consists of detrital clay minerals, quartz, and authigenic phillipsite. There is scarce biogenic debris (siliceous or calcareous). The consolidated sediments are more enriched in Si, Al, K, Na, Li, Sc, Cr, Rb, and Cs than the associated crusts and nodules. The unmixed sediment samples were mainlycontributed by Asian eolian dust. The onset of the outer Fe-Mn crust growth nearly coincides with the Central Asia aridification event at ~3.5 Ma, which resulted in an abrupt increase in eolian flux of Asian dust. Intensified surface primary productivity is assumed to bring more metals to deep waters, and eventually facilitate the outer Fe-Mn crust formation. Authigenic phillipsite may come from the alteration of local basic volcanic glasses and cause excess Al, high Al/Ti, and low Si/Al ratios. However, phillipsites hardly affect the abundance of rare earth elements (REEs) and their patterns. In addition, the investigation of two kinds of burrows inside the consolidated sediments reveals that the inner nodules of the amalgamated crusts may remain on the oxic sediment surface, due to frequent benthic activities.
