Abstract

Shape-memory materials hold great potential to impart medical devices with functionalities useful during implantation, locomotion, drug delivery, and removal. However, their clinical translation is limited by a lack of non-invasive and precise methods to trigger and control the shape recovery, especially for devices implanted in deep tissues. In this study, the application of image-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) heating is tested. Magnetic resonance-guided HIFU triggered shape-recovery of a device made of polyurethane urea while monitoring its temperature by magnetic resonance thermometry. Deformation of the polyurethane urea in a live canine bladder (5 cm deep) is achieved with 8 seconds of ultrasound-guided HIFU with millimeter resolution energy focus. Tissue sections show no hyperthermic tissue injury. A conceptual application in ureteral stent shape-recovery reduces removal resistance. In conclusion, image-guided HIFU demonstrates deep energy penetration, safety and speed.

Abstract

This article investigates the relationship between life satisfaction and physical health of retired female athletes, as well as the factors that may affect this relationship. In addition, the study also found the impact of retirement time on life satisfaction. The research results indicate that athletes have higher life satisfaction in the first year after retirement, but in the 3-5 years after retirement, life satisfaction significantly decreases. This may be due to the challenges and pressures of adapting to new lifestyles and changing roles after retirement. Our research delved into the disparities in life satisfaction across various sports disciplines, examined the mediating influence of social support within this context, and considered the effects of age and gender on these relationships. Notably, we identified variations in life satisfaction levels among athletes engaged in different sports, with social support emerging as a pivotal factor in enhancing life satisfaction. Furthermore, we observed that age and gender also impacted these dynamics. The findings from this study hold significant implications for enhancing the support and resource allocation provided to retired athletes. By understanding these multifaceted relationships, we aim to enhance the quality of life and physical health of retired athletes.

Abstract

Recent research has shown that attention-based sequence-to-sequence models such as Listen, Attend, and Spell (LAS) yield comparable results to state-of-the-art ASR systems on various tasks. In this paper, we describe the development of such a system and demonstrate its performance on two tasks: first we achieve a new state-of-the-art word error rate of 3.43% on the test clean subset of LibriSpeech English data; second on non-native English speech, including both read speech and spontaneous speech, we obtain very competitive results compared to a conventional system built with the most updated Kaldi recipe.
