Abstract

Herein, a transparent and reproducible substrate, fabricated using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) laminated with self-assembled Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs), was employed as a universal surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate for the detection of targets with various matrices. The Ag NPs were assembled in a two-dimensional manner via a self-assembly technique. Due to the electrostatic interaction between the Ag NPs, the reproducibility of the assembly was ensured by the fixed density of the assembled Ag NPs at saturated assembly states. The assembled pattern and plasmon resonance of the Ag NPs were well preserved during the molding and curing of PDMS. As a result, the Ag NP laminated PDMS film exhibited a SERS effect to the adsorbed p-aminothiophenol comparable to that of the assembled Ag NPs on a glass slide. Extra SERS enhancement was achieved by construction of a Ag (PDMS)/molecule/Ag (glass) configuration due to the electromagnetic coupling between the Ag NPs. The Raman scattering of 4-mercaptobenzoic acid and benzotriazole modified on the surfaces of a smooth Au electrode and copper foil, respectively, was detected with the aid of the Ag NP-laminated PDMS film. Furthermore, malachite green dispersed in a KBr solid matrix was quantitatively determined with a detection limit of 0.5 μg/g. It is suggested that the SERS enhancement and consequential SERS detection sensitivity of the target molecules may be further maximized by adjusting the distance between the target molecules and the Ag NPs laminated on the PDMS film. Abstract

An example that uses an LED (light emitting diode) as light source to miniaturize the conventional large spectrophotometer was demonstrated by the development of a portable photometer with two LEDs as light source and its application for determination of iodine in edible salt and formaldehyde in the atmosphere, in situ. The high speed, good precision, and low cost distinguished the device from other methods. The RSD (n=8) for measurement of iodine in edible salt varied from 0.7% to 1.5%, and the RE (n=3) for formaldehyde measurement varied from 0.8% to 4.4%. The analytical results obtained were in good agreement with those obtained with a conventional spectrophotometer. The portable instrumentation was demonstrated to be suitable for the quality control of edible salt and ambient air, in‐situ.

Abstract

Acetylcholinesterase was physically adsorbed on polyvinylpyrrolidone K30 to prepare a novel immobilized cholinesterase, which was described for the first time. The immobilized enzyme was tested for its reactivity, enzyme activity stability, the solubility, the influence of pH and buffer, and characteristic reactivity with inhibitors, e.g., organophosphate and carbamate compounds. The result revealed that the immobilized cholinesterase held its original activity in solution, stable enough, easy to dissolve for convenient operation, and this immobilized cholinesterase could be well used for rapid, on-site screening of organophosphate and carbamate compounds, together with a portable pesticide analyzer.

Abstract

By using a novel procedure, a new kind of water-soluble CdTe nanocrystals (NCs) is synthesized in aqueous solutions at the temperature of 100 °C. In this procedure, tripeptide thiol glutathione was used as stabilizing agent, CdTe NCs with controllable photoluminescence wavelength from 500 nm to 680 nm were prepared within two hours. Compared with CdTe NCs prepared with thiohydracrylic acid as stabilizing agent, as-prepared NCs show much narrower photoluminescence FWHM, more symmetrical emission peak and higher photoluminescence quantum yield. The surface structure of as-prepared CdTe NCs is deduced, therefore, there may be some unreported circular structure on the surface. Experimental results show that as-prepared NCs have very good biological compatibility and they are nontoxic. And these CdTe NCs can conjugate with biological molecules for further biological luminescence study. The proposed hydrothermal synthesis procedure has the advantage of simplicity, inexpensiveness, time saving and mild operating conditions.
