2. Correlation of fibre contents towards manufacturing defects and water absorption of Arenga Pinnata fibre reinforced hybrid composites for green boat construction.

Abstract

In this decade, all researchers and industry players decide to produce new sustainable product by exploring new resources as well as promote a new potential design. Natural fibre had gained a great attention from all researchers and industry players for this purpose. In this study, a new formulation of Arenga Pinnata fibre reinforced hybrid fibreglass/Kevlar composite was fabricated using a hand lay-up technique for the potential eco-design green boat. The hyrid composite specimens were prepared in different fibre percentage to polymer matric and the thickness of 5 mm. The determination of manufacturing defects of the potential eco-design green boat was performed using Scanning Electron Microscopy technique (SEM. Water absorption were observed using the standard water absorption test of ASTM D570-98. Then, correlation of manufacturing defects toward water absorption were analyzed. As a conclusion, SEM had significantly determined the manufacturing defects occurred in the hybrid composite specimen as voids, fibre pull-out, resin rich zone and matric cracks as well as misalignment of fibre. In this study, its demonstrated that increased of fibre contents influenced the numbers of manufacturing defects and interfacial adhesion. It was revealed that the specimen C of 60% fibre content had the least manufacturing defects. This led to better mechanical properties, as specimen D of 75% fibre content possessed the highest manufacturing defects and interfacial adhesion. The result of water absorption showed that 30% of fibre content Arenga Pinnata showed the lowest water resistance in day 15 which is 2.94%. Abstract

The investigation of coating incorporated with various percentages of henna has been conducted by means of weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy method. Mild steel has been studied at ambient temperature and 50°C in order to examine the effect of temperature. The potentiodynamic polarization measurements indicate that henna extract acts as a mixed inhibitor while the corrosion rate (CR) value decreases as the current density (Icorr) decreases in the presence of 10% henna extract for both temperatures. Surface and protective film analysis have been carried out using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).The inhibition activity is mainly correlated with the major active functional groups of lawsone. The main components can be found in lawsone structures are phenols O-H, carboxylic acid C=O and alkenes C=C. The morphology of the uninhibited sample shows a rough surface of mild steel as a result of corrosion process and severe damage can be seen. In the presence of henna, a smooth surface of mild steel anda uniform deposition of henna were observed.

18. Effects of fuel ratio on performance and emission of diesel-compressed natural gas (CNG) dual fuel engine

Abstract

Recent research breakthrough reveals that diesel-CNG dual fuel (DDF) combustion can potentially reduce exhaust emission of internal combustion engines. However, problem arises when knock phenomenon occurs producing high carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbon (HC) emission due to uncontrolled blending ratio of diesel-CNG fuel on specific engine load. This study will determine the limit of dual fuel ratio before knock occurrence while analysing performance and exhaust emission of an engine operating with diesel and DDF fuel mode. A 2.5 litre 4-cylinder direct injection common-rail diesel engine was utilised as a test platform. The modelstested were 100% Diesel, 90% DDF, 80% DDF and 70% DDF, representing diesel to CNG mass ratio of 100:0, 90:10, 80:20 and 70:30 respectively. It was found that DDF engine performance was lower compared to diesel engine at 1500 rpm engine speed. At higher engine speed, the 70% DDF showed engine performance comparable to diesel engine. However, high HC emission with knock onset and a decrease of Nitrogen Oxide (NOX) emission were recorded. This study suggests the preferred limit of dual fuel ratio should not be lower than 70% DDF which will be able to operate at high engine speed without the occurrence of knock and poor exhaust emission.

22. A Hybrid Technique Using Combinatorial Cyclic Difference Sets and Binomial Amplitude Tapering for Linear Sparse Array Antenna Design

Abstract

Reducing system complexity and cost in synthesizing a sparse array antenna design is a challenging task for practical communication systems, such as radar systems and space communication. In this paper, a hybrid technique to synthesize a linear sparse array antenna design is described. This technique is developed using two methods. The first method is a combinatorial approach that applies cyclic difference sets (CDS) integers to significantly reduce the number of antenna elements. The approach and procedure used to apply the new CDS method to configure a linear sparse array, with significant reduction of the spatial antenna dimension, is described. The second method, applied to the array result of the first method, is amplitude tapering using a binomial array approach to reduce the sidelobes level (SLL). The simulation and measurement results of the sample sparse array design showed that the SLL was reduced in comparison to the sparse array design using only the combinatorial CDS method.

Abstract

Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) has a heritable component that remains to be fully characterized. Most identified common susceptibility variants lie in non-protein-coding sequences. We hypothesized that variants in the 3' untranslated region at putative microRNA (miRNA)-binding sites represent functional targets that influence EOC susceptibility. Here, we evaluate the association between 767 miRNA-related single-nucleotide polymorphisms (miRSNPs) and EOC risk in 18,174 EOC cases and 26,134 controls from 43 studies genotyped through the Collaborative Oncological Gene-environment Study. We identify several miRSNPs associated with invasive serous EOC risk (odds ratio=1.12, P=10(-8)) mapping to an inversion polymorphism at 17q21.31. Additional genotyping of non-miRSNPs at 17q21.31 reveals stronger signals outside the inversion (P=10(-10)). Variation at 17q21.31 is associated with neurological diseases, and our collaboration is the first to report an association with EOC susceptibility. An integrated molecular analysis in this region provides evidence for ARHGAP27 and PLEKHM1 as candidate EOC susceptibility genes.

Abstract

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified four susceptibility loci for epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC), with another two suggestive loci reaching near genome-wide significance. We pooled data from a GWAS conducted in North America with another GWAS from the UK. We selected the top 24,551 SNPs for inclusion on the iCOGS custom genotyping array. We performed follow-up genotyping in 18,174 individuals with EOC (cases) and 26,134 controls from 43 studies from the Ovarian Cancer Association Consortium. We validated the two loci at 3q25 and 17q21 that were previously found to have associations close to genome-wide significance and identified three loci newly associated with risk: two loci associated with all EOC subtypes at 8q21 (rs11782652, P = 5.5 × 10(-9)) and 10p12 (rs1243180, P = 1.8 × 10(-8)) and another locus specific to the serous subtype at 17q12 (rs757210, P = 8.1 × 10(-10)). An integrated molecular analysis of genes and regulatory regions at these loci provided evidence for functional mechanisms underlying susceptibility and implicated CHMP4C in the pathogenesis of ovarian cancer.

Abstract

Oil palm wood (OPW) was treated with medium-molecular weight PF resin (mmw-PF) through a modified impregnation-compression method. The method consists of four steps, namely, drying, impregnation, heating, and hot pressing densification. The objective of the study was to optimize the impregnation variables. The overall density of the OPW increased, whereas the density gradient between the two OPW structural elements (namely, parenchyma tissues and vascular bundles) decreased. The weight percent gain (WPG) significantly increased even with a very short impregnation period (i.e. 1 hour). Young`s Modulus of the compression parallel to the grain increased by 15 times (from 170 to 2600 MPa) and the shear strength increased by 7 times (from 1.9 to 13 MPa). The strength of the samples was increased exponentially against density increment. The treatment also made the two OPW structural elements to be strongly bonded that helped in enhancing the durability and machining characteristics of the material.

This future type of oil should be non-toxic, biodegradable and ecological benign. Subsequently, it becomes crucial to recognize the sustainability of such oil in maintaining a high system performance which resulting in tremendous contribution towards machinery technology. Furthermore, the development of methods to evaluate the actual performance of hydraulic fluid has been of great interest. In this project a hydraulic test rig was built to conduct endurance test where it can be operated continuously with several safety features. The rig was used to test the oil and other stringent parameters, running for nearly 1000hours. Major factors in the decrease of mechanical efficiency are thermal heat, friction, aging behaviour and contamination of the plant oil. Abstract

Abstract: Environmental issues are among the main concern nowadays. Interest in developing environmental products arises concurrently with the industrial development. The use of plant oil as hydraulic fluid would help to minimize hazardous pollution caused by accidental spillage, lower disposal costs of the used fluid and meet the environmental regulations. This research was conducted to investigate the rheology elements and potential of plant oil in marine application. The properties and characteristics of plant oil were done via rheological study by focusing on the viscosity effect as a function of temperature and shear rate. The rheological models indicate that this plant oil belong to pseudo-plastic category. Further analysis was done to fit the experimental data with various models and the findings show that the Cross and Carreau models fit well with the experimental data. The plant oil was used in 1000 hour operation in a hydraulic system, built in the Universiti Malaysia Terengganu. The overall results suggest the potential substitution of plant oil as an energy transport media in marine application. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

An investigation on the corrosion behavior of aluminum at different sites of sea water in Kuala Terengganu was investigated. The method of corrosion assessment was by the use of potentiodynamic polarization scan (PP) and weight loss test. Aluminum alloy 1508 was employed in this study. This metal was immersed in seawater at different sites of Kuala Terengganu coastal area with different distance from the shore. Results obtained from electrochemical test techniques shown that lower corrosion effect of the metal significantly reduced the corrosion densities (icorr) and corrosion rate. Abstract

Commercial henna (Lawsonia inermis) was investigated to inhibit the corrosion of aluminum alloy through immersion in seawater. The aluminum alloy (5083) was prepared in size of 25mm x 25mm x 3mm. The immersion test was conducted in seawater with different concentration of henna, 100ppm, 300ppm, 500ppm for duration of 60 days. Four characterizations were performed in this study which was weight loss study, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and adsorption isotherm. The results indicated that henna has major constituents of lawsone which contributed to the chemisorptions or adsorption process by forming an isolation layers on the aluminum alloy surface which follows the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. It was found that the protection layer attached on metal was not permanent and precipitation occurred as the time increases. The highest inhibition efficiency was found at 88% (500ppm). This research found that henna is an excellent natural inhibitor for aluminum alloy in seawater.

Abstract

The objective of this paper is to assess the attitude of Malaysian stakeholders to genetically modified (GM) salmon and to identify the factors that influence their acceptance of GM salmon using a structural equation model. A survey was carried out on 434 representatives from various stakeholder groups in the Klang Valley region of Malaysia. Public attitude towards GM salmon was measured using self-developed questionnaires with seven-point Likert scales. The findings of this study have confirmed that public attitudes towards GM salmon is a complex issue and should be seen as a multi-faceted process. The most important direct predictors for the encouragement of GM salmon are the specific application-linked perceptions about religious acceptability of GM salmon followed by perceived risks and benefits, familiarity, and general promise of modern biotechnology. Encouragement of GM salmon also involves the interplay among other factors such as general concerns of biotechnology, threatening the natural order of things, the need for labeling, the need for patenting, confidence in regulation, and societal values. The research findings can serve as a database that will be useful for understanding the social construct of public attitude towards GM foods in a developing country.

Abstract

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified four susceptibility loci for epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC), with another two suggestive loci reaching near genome-wide significance. We pooled data from a GWAS conducted in North America with another GWAS from the UK. We selected the top 24,551 SNPs for inclusion on the iCOGS custom genotyping array. We performed follow-up genotyping in 18,174 individuals with EOC (cases) and 26,134 controls from 43 studies from the Ovarian Cancer Association Consortium. We validated the two loci at 3q25 and 17q21 that were previously found to have associations close to genome-wide significance and identified three loci newly associated with risk: two loci associated with all EOC subtypes at 8q21 (rs11782652, P = 5.5 × 10(-9)) and 10p12 (rs1243180, P = 1.8 × 10(-8)) and another locus specific to the serous subtype at 17q12 (rs757210, P = 8.1 × 10(-10)). An integrated molecular analysis of genes and regulatory regions at these loci provided evidence for functional mechanisms underlying susceptibility and implicated CHMP4C in the pathogenesis of ovarian cancer.

Abstract

Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) has a heritable component that remains to be fully characterized. Most identified common susceptibility variants lie in non-protein-coding sequences. We hypothesized that variants in the 3' untranslated region at putative microRNA (miRNA)-binding sites represent functional targets that influence EOC susceptibility. Here, we evaluate the association between 767 miRNA-related single-nucleotide polymorphisms (miRSNPs) and EOC risk in 18,174 EOC cases and 26,134 controls from 43 studies genotyped through the Collaborative Oncological Gene-environment Study. We identify several miRSNPs associated with invasive serous EOC risk (odds ratio=1.12, P=10(-8)) mapping to an inversion polymorphism at 17q21.31. Additional genotyping of non-miRSNPs at 17q21.31 reveals stronger signals outside the inversion (P=10(-10)). Variation at 17q21.31 is associated with neurological diseases, and our collaboration is the first to report an association with EOC susceptibility. An integrated molecular analysis in this region provides evidence for ARHGAP27 and PLEKHM1 as candidate EOC susceptibility genes.
