The manager is the key element in the process of information analysis inside a firm, especially because this process is used to make vast decisions, from strategic decisions to the most detailed tactical movements. It is a process that can reach all company’s departments and make them more efficient. The process’ success and its completion in order to create intelligence depends, first of all, on the manager’s ability to carry out the five competitive intelligence process activities and to act accordingly at each stage. Also, the manager’s response speed can make the difference between the success of an action to capitalize on the results of information analysis and its failure. Therefore, the paper will emphasize the importance of management functions and, especially, their particularities regarding the information analysis process and the competitive intelligence cycle. In the end, those particularities might be more important than the process itself, since the quality of the result depend drastically on the way tasks are distributed and managed. Last but not least, the manager should be able to make the distinction between regular activities and the ones defining the competitive intelligence process, in order to reach to desired objectives in an efficient manner.

Competitive Intelligence (CI) is becoming of essence due to the need for improving firm performance in an increasingly volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (V.U.C.A.) world. The CI model, however, has not evolved to address evolving intelligence needs, highlighting an opportunity for further research on how to fit for purpose the CI process itself. This study found that Design Thinking (DT) mindset and process has potential for the application to the CI model, improving efficiency both on the overall process, at each stage and in CI. This paper focus on researching the CI process and recognizing its main pitfalls, explaining how DT can help fix or improve on these, and propose a new process which incorporates the aforementioned results. The final part of the study analyses the implications for both CI practitioners and the CI discipline, while pointing to future research with the aim of validating this suggested framework. publishersversion published

It is common to find Competitive Intelligence activities within the high-tech enterprises in particular in the pharmaceutical industry. These companies not only use the process of Competitive Intelligence to act against competitors, traditional aim of the Competitive Intelligence. It is increasingly used to enhance cooperation. The Cycle of CI Competitive Intelligence is used both as to extract offensive and defensive intelligence as cooperative intelligence. The paper presents the results of a sample study of 186 Spanish pharmaceutical companies that were asked about the purpose of cooperation in their Competitive Intelligence activities. The results confirm that these are used in the development of business relationships, search for partners, joint research, etc. and that companies bet on these relationships for the future within the Competitive Intelligence.

Background: Competitive intelligence (CI) provides actionable intelligence, which provides a competitive edge in enterprises. However, without proper process, it is difficult to develop actionable intelligence. There are disagreements about how the CI process should be structured. For CI professionals to focus on producing actionable intelligence, and to do so with simplicity, they need a common CI process model.Objectives: The purpose of this research is to review the current literature on CI, to look at the aims of identifying and analysing CI process models, and finally to propose a universal CI process model.Method: The study was qualitative in nature and content analysis was conducted on all identified sources establishing and analysing CI process models. To identify relevant literature, academic databases and search engines were used. Moreover, a review of references in related studies led to more relevant sources, the references of which were further reviewed and analysed. To ensure reliability, only peer-reviewed articles were used.Results: The findings reveal that the majority of scholars view the CI process as a cycle of interrelated phases. The output of one phase is the input of the next phase.Conclusion: The CI process is a cycle of interrelated phases. The output of one phase is the input of the next phase. These phases are influenced by the following factors: decision makers, process and structure, organisational awareness and culture, and feedback.

International audience; Il existe de nombreux outils qui ont été employés pour cartographier des territoires qu'ils soient réels, virtuels ou de pures abstractions. Cependant, nous constatons que le potentiel de représentations territoriales fourni par les jeux de stratégie sur plateau est quasi inexistant en intelligence économique. Or, ces jeux sont très nombreux, pour certains relativement connus et offrent un réservoir de solutions intéressantes pour aider au processus d'intelligence économique, d'autant que des travaux en relation avec le Management Stratégique des organisations se sont déjà intéressés à ce potentiel. Les jeux que nous étudions emploient un plateau sur lequel les deux dimensions du plan sont exploitées et où il est question de contrôle, d'utilisation et de conquête de territoires. Photographiée à un instant t, une partie de l'un de ces jeux permet une analogie assez simple pour élaborer des représentations territoriales en deux dimensions. Selon l'analogie employée et l'exploitation de certains éléments de base des règles et des stratégies de ces jeux, nous défendons l'idée que les cartographies qu'ils proposent créent une valeur ajoutée pour le processus d'intelligence économique. Par exemple, la mise en forme de signaux informationnels sous la forme d'indices de développement territoriaux liés au jeu de référence, selon nous, apporte des solutions originales pour créer une valeur ajoutée visuelle à de l'information déjà identifiée par un veilleur. Pour argumenter cette idée, nous abordons dans ce papier, d'abord les rapports qui peuvent exister entre la cartographie et l'intelligence économique ainsi que les apports de l'un à l'autre de ces domaines. Ensuite, nous étudions le concept de territoire pour le mettre en perspective avec ses mises en forme cartographiques et leurs contributions à la résolution de problèmes. Puis, nous présentons l'analogie du jeu de stratégie sur plateau à partir de son positionnement vis-à-vis du concept de territoire et la résolution de problèmes, mais surtout en présentant plusieurs jeux de ce type pour mettre en évidence leur potentiel analogique. Dans le prolongement de cette idée, nous abordons par la suite la transition entre les jeux de stratégie " classiques " et les wargames à partir d'une petite présentation de ces derniers. Enfin, nous proposons un tableau récapitulatif des caractéristiques des différents jeux présentés dans la perspective de la mise en forme d'une aide au choix d'une cartographie fondée sur l'analogie du jeu de stratégie sur plateau.

The information universe from a company point of view has changed in the last fifteen years. In fact, companies are many that are aware of the strategic information dimension. Thus, some years ago, when we talk about information management in enterprise, we talk implicitly about the documentation chain. Nowaydays, many others information approaches can be identified as intrinsically linked to information. In this paper, we try to clarify the distinctions which exist between these approaches and the actors. In addition, this study is a conclusion of some investigations realized about Economic Intelligence, particularly on the Lorraine project: DECiLOR™, in which one of our researchers contributed and we have interviewed a lot of the other actors of this project.Firsly, in this paper, we analyzed a new information discipline, infomediary discipline, we defined it, compared it to the intelligence cycle and another information discipline, the watcher. Secondly, we study the distinctions which exist between Documentation, Watch and Economic Intelligence, from the information retrieval problem (IRP) approach used. We use this last analysis to complete our first definition of the infomediary., Le monde de l'information, du point de vue des entreprises, a bien changé ces quinze dernières années. En effet, les entreprises sont de plus en plus nombreuses à prendre conscience de la dimension stratégique de l'information. Ainsi, il y a encore quelques années, lorsqu'il était question de gestion de l'information en entreprise, il était fait implicitement référence à la chaîne documentaire. Or, désormais de nombreuses autres approches peuvent être aussi identifiées comme liées intrinsèquement à l'information. Dans ce papier, nous tentons de clarifier les distinctions existantes entre quelques unes de ces démarches et leurs acteurs. De plus, cette étude est la conclusion de diverses investigations réalisées sur le terrain de l'Intelligence Economique, dont notamment le projet de la région lorraine : DECiLOR™, auquel l'un de nos chercheurs à pu contribuer et où d'autres ont pu recueillir le témoignage de nombreux acteurs de ce projet. Ainsi, en premier lieu, nous tenterons de préciser dans ce papier, l'un des nouveaux métiers de l'information : le métier d'infomédiaire ; en le définissant par rapport à la chaîne du renseignement et par rapport à un autre métier de l'information : celui de veilleur. En second lieu, nous étudierons, selon la manière d'aborder les problématiques de recherche d'information, les distinctions existantes entre les métiers de la Documentation, de la Veille et de l'Intelligence Economique. En outre, nous profiterons de cette analyse pour compléter la définition que nous proposons pour le métier d'infomédiaire.
