Background: Sleep care is crucial for the health and development of infants, with proper sleep patterns reducing the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and other sleep-related incidents. Educational interventions targeting caregivers are essential in promoting safe sleep practices. Methods: This systematic review adhered to PRISMA guidelines, searching databases such as PubMed, MEDLINE, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library. Inclusion criteria focused on studies involving home-based interventions for infants aged 0–12 months, including parental education and behavioral interventions. Exclusion criteria included studies in clinical settings and non-peer-reviewed articles. Data extraction and synthesis were performed by two independent reviewers, using a narrative approach to categorize interventions and outcomes. Results: Twenty-three studies met the inclusion criteria. Key findings indicate that home-based educational interventions, including hospital-based programs, home visits, and mobile health technologies, significantly improve parental knowledge and adherence to safe sleep practices. These interventions also enhance parental satisfaction and contribute positively to infant health outcomes. Conclusions: Educational interventions have demonstrated effectiveness in promoting safe sleep practices among caregivers, particularly in home settings. These interventions, including hospital-based programs, home visits, and digital tools, improve parental knowledge, adherence to guidelines, and overall satisfaction. The impact is evident in the reduction of unsafe sleep behaviors and enhanced infant health outcomes. However, variability in the intervention methods and delivery, cultural contexts, and geographic focus suggest a need for more tailored, long-term, and comprehensive studies. Future research should standardize outcome measures and assess the sustained impact of these educational strategies on infant sleep patterns and caregiver practices over time. Bed-sharing is a controversial but common parenting practice with claimed benefits for emotional and behavioral development. Using data from the UK Millennium Cohort Study (N = 16,599), this prospective study investigated whether bed-sharing at 9 months is associated with childhood internalizing and externalizing symptom trajectories. Children were grouped by their patterns of co-developing internalizing and externalizing symptoms from 3 to 11 years of age using a parallel process latent class growth analysis. There were no associations between bed-sharing at 9 months of age and internalizing and externalizing symptom trajectories across childhood. This finding suggests that bed-sharing at 9 months has no positive or negative influence on the development of internalizing and externalizing symptoms across childhood. Clinicians should inform parents that bed-sharing during the second half of the first year is unlikely to have an impact on the later emotional and behavioral development of the children. The extent to which mother and infant sleep predict maternal sensitivity as (a) main effects and (b) moderate the association between social cognition about infant crying (i.e., cry processing) and maternal sensitivity was examined in a sample of 299 mother–infant dyads (43% of mothers non-White; 50.5% of infants female). Infant- and mother-oriented cry processing were assessed prenatally using a video recall procedure and mothers self-reported demographics and characteristics reflecting emotional risk. When infants were 2 months old, mothers reported their depressive symptoms and mother and infant sleep. Maternal sensitivity and infant negative mood were observed during free play and the still face. There were no main effects of mother or infant sleep on maternal sensitivity over and above covariates. However, infant total sleep duration across night and day and mother sleep disturbance moderated the effect of mother-oriented cry processing on sensitivity. Specifically, mother-oriented cry processing was associated with lower maternal sensitivity only among mothers whose infants had lower sleep duration and who reported more sleep disturbances. Moderating effects were not apparent for infant night wakings or time awake or mothers' total sleep problems. Constrained opportunities for sleep or respite across the entire day and the totality of mothers' nighttime sleep disturbances, not just those specific to infants' night wakings, undermine maternal sensitivity by exacerbating mothers' preexisting tendency to have self-focused and negative reactions to infant distress. Aim: This study aimed to understand the association between feeding method, specifically breastfeeding versus non‐breastfeeding, at 6 and 12 months and infant sleep over the first 3 years of life. Methods: A sample of 444 mother‐infant dyads from the Maternal Adversity, Vulnerability and Neurodevelopment cohort were analysed. Based on retrospective maternal reports between 3–24 months, infants' breastfeeding status was determined at 6 and 12 months. Nocturnal sleep duration, longest period of consecutive sleep, and total sleep over 24 h were measured by maternal reports at 6, 12, 24 and 36 months. Results: Generalized Estimating Equations revealed no significant association between feeding status, both at 6 and 12 months, and nocturnal sleep duration or total sleep over 24 h between 6–36 months (p > 0.05). However, breastfeeding at both 6 and 12 months was associated with shorter periods of consecutive sleep, at 6 and 12 months (p < 0.05) but not at 24 and 36 months (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Our findings suggest that breastfeeding seems to be associated with more infant sleep fragmentation but not with total sleep duration in early infancy. Emphasis on continuous infant sleep overnight may be driven by parental concern of risk to child mental health outcomes. The Mercy Pregnancy and Emotional Wellbeing Study (MPEWS) examined whether infant sleep at 6 and 12 months postpartum predicts anxiety disorders at 2–4 years, and whether this is moderated by maternal depression, active physical comforting (APC) or maternal cognitions about infant sleep. Data included 349 women and infants. Infant sleep was measured using the Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire and child anxiety disorders by the Preschool Age Psychiatric Assessment. The risk of developing generalised anxiety or social phobia disorders at 3–4 years was reduced by 42% (p = 0.001) and 31% (p = 0.001), respectively, for a one standard deviation increase in total sleep at 12 months. No other infant sleep outcomes were associated. Maternal depression, APC and cognitions about infant sleep did not significantly moderate these relationships. Focus may need to be on total infant sleep, rather than when sleep is achieved. Introduction: Approximately 3400 infants die suddenly and unexpectedly each year in the United States; many of these deaths include modifiable risk factors (such as a non‐supine position, sleeping on a soft surface, or loose bedding or items in the environment). Interventions have been successful at improving parental knowledge about recommendations to reduce risk of sleep‐related infant deaths, as well as improving intention to adopt recommendations. However, follow‐up studies have found a disconnect between knowledge/intentions to adhere to recommendations and actual practices. Exploring maternal decision‐making about infant sleep practices can better elucidate the disconnect between knowledge of infant sleep recommendations and the practice of it, and thus, inform more effective safe sleep interventions. The purpose of this study was to gain a more in‐depth understanding of decision‐making around infant sleep practices, and barriers and facilitators to adopting safe infant sleep recommendations. Methods: Semi‐structured in‐home interviews were conducted with 22 families (20 mothers and 2 mother–father dyads) of infants up to 6 months of age. Results: Thematic analysis of the transcripts revealed six themes: Plans changed when baby came, Trying things to figure out what works (infant preferences), Safety concerns, What's comfortable for me (maternal preferences), They say...(advice), and Trying to be careful. Conclusion: These results suggest that knowledge of infant sleep recommendations alone is not enough to ensure adherence and that decision‐making is a dynamic and ongoing process affected by multiple factors. Rates of sudden unexpected death in infancy have been found to occur disproportionately amongst families living in the most deprived neighbourhoods. This suggests that standard safer sleep messaging may not be effective for this population and that research is required to identify ways of working that are better associated with behavioural change in parents with children at increased risk of SUDI. In this study, we aimed to explore the behavioural change components and mechanisms of action of safer sleep interventions for families with children at increased risk of SUDI. We conducted an analysis of the literature on safer sleep interventions using the COM‐B model, Theoretical Domains Framework and Behavioural Change Technique Taxonomy. All interventions targeted parents' capability; 15 interventions targeted parents' opportunity; and six interventions targeted parents' motivation to engage in safer sleep practices. Nineteen behavioural change techniques were identified. The focus of practitioners may need to shift from solely the delivery of safer sleep information towards working with parents to understand their capability, opportunity and, in particular, motivation to engage in safer sleep practices, identified as being a key driver of behaviour in this population. This study examines how feeding, sleep, and growth during infancy impact the gut microbiome (GM) in toddlers. The research was conducted on toddlers (n = 36), born to Latina women of low-income with obesity. Their mothers completed retrospective feeding and sleeping questionnaires at 1, 6, and 12 months; at 36 months, fecal samples were collected. Sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene (V4 region) revealed that breastfeeding for at least 1 month and the introduction of solids before 6 months differentiated the GM in toddlerhood (Bray–Curtis, pseudo-F = 1.805, p = 0.018, and pseudo-F = 1.651, p = 0.044, respectively). Sleep had an effect across time; at 1 and 6 months of age, a lower proportion of nighttime sleep (relative to 24 h total sleep) was associated with a richer GM at three years of age (Shannon H = 4.395, p = 0.036 and OTU H = 5.559, p = 0.018, respectively). Toddlers experiencing rapid weight gain from birth to 6 months had lower phylogenetic diversity (Faith PD H = 3.633, p = 0.057). These findings suggest that early life nutrition, sleeping patterns, and growth rate in infancy may influence the GM composition. The term Regulatory Disorders (RDs) refers to infants and young children who cry a lot, have poorly organised sleep-waking, or whose feeding is impaired. The characteristic they share is a failure to acquire autonomous self-control of these key behaviours, which most children develop in the first postnatal year. The concept of RDs is helpful in highlighting this question of how infant self-regulation is, or isn't, accomplished, in drawing these characteristics together and distinguishing them from others, and in focusing research and clinical attention on a common, but relatively neglected, set of concerns for families. The main focus for research into RDs has been on the nature and causes of the infant behaviours involved. Here, the aim is to highlight the part played by parents, since that is central to the provision of clinical services for RDs. Three points are made. (1) The contributions of parents include: detection and monitoring of RDs; generating the resulting healthcare service costs; maintaining their own wellbeing, since that is in their infant’s best interest; delivering interventions to help infants and families, which are almost always provided by parents. Parenting may be involved in maintaining RDs in some cases. (2) Substantial differences exist between infant RD cases in the behaviours involved, the age at which they present, the complexity and severity of the RD, and in their persistence over time and age. Most cases have one, rather than all three RDs, making them the most common type seen by clinicians. Evidence is summarised that interventions tailored to fit the RD involved can be effective in these cases. Multiple and sustained RDs are much rarer, but associated with greater risk of long-term psychological and behavioural impairments. They are a priority, but less is known about the contributions of parenting and child factors to these cases. (3) The focus on parents with infants requires joined-up paediatric and adult mental health services. After summarising three main requirements for such services, an example designed to fulfil these requirements is described to illustrate what a service for supporting families with RDs might look like.

Maternal depression and anxiety symptoms are common across the perinatal period and are associated with a raised risk for adverse child outcomes. While substantial evidence exists for child outcomes such as behaviour, language and cognition, infant sleep has been less studied. In this longitudinal study, we examined the association between maternal symptoms of depression and anxiety and mother-reported infant sleep at 6 and 12 months. Across the four infant sleep outcomes, total sleep time, sleep onset latency, number of awakenings and a maternal perception variable, we found modest effects for concomitant depression symptoms. There were almost no additional effects for anxiety symptoms beyond that already accounted for by depression. Using trajectory modelling of maternal symptoms at five time points, we found more robust effects for maternal groups with postnatally emerging symptoms over prenatally present symptoms across all four sleep outcomes. Our strongest finding was that mothers with postnatal depression symptoms were more likely to perceive their infant's sleep as problematic compared with all other mothers. Where we found effects on duration-based infant sleep outcomes overall, these were small and clearest for depressive symptoms over anxiety symptoms. For both nighttime awakenings and perception of sleep as a problem, effects were apparent only for mothers in the postnatal symptom groups, and not for prenatal symptoms, at both infant ages six and 12 months. Breastfeeding and sleep are inextricably linked, biologically and socially. For survival, newborn infants require feeding around the clock. Doing so facilitates an optimal milk supply and proximity to the mother for protection. However, in Western societies, breastfeeding mothers face a conflict when culturally pervasive messages suggest that breastfeeding to sleep (at some unspecified point) becomes a 'bad habit', creating an undesirable dependency of the mother's own making - 'a rod for your back'. As such, mothers are often faced with their desire to continue breastfeeding while simultaneously experiencing pressure to sleep separately from their baby, space feeds and encourage self-soothing. Often this results in early cessation of breastfeeding owing to a lack of support and accurate information. The first part of this article will look at the context for the breastfeeding and bedtime issue and how it impacts mothers. The second part will highlight the key information around the benefits of breastfeeding at bedtime and during the night that can be shared with parents to educate and reassure them. The prevalence of prenatal depressive symptoms has more than doubled during the COVID-19 pandemic, raising substantial concerns about child outcomes including sleep problems and altered brain development. The objective of this work was to determine relationships between prenatal depressive symptoms, infant brain network structure, and infant sleep. Pregnant individuals were recruited as part of the Pregnancy during the Pandemic (PdP) study. Maternal depressive symptoms were measured in pregnancy and postpartum. When infants of those participants were 3 months of age (n=66; 26 females), infants underwent diffusion magnetic resonance imaging and infant sleep was evaluated. Using tractography, we calculated structural connectivity matrices for the default mode (DMN) and limbic networks. We examined associations between graph theory metrics of infant brain networks and prenatal maternal depressive symptoms, with infant sleep as a moderator. Prenatal depressive symptoms were negatively related to average DMN clustering coefficient and local efficiency in infant brains. Infant sleep duration was related to DMN global efficiency and moderated the relationship between prenatal depressive symptoms and density of limbic connections such that infants who slept less had a more negative relationship between prenatal depressive symptoms and local brain connectivity. Prenatal depressive symptoms appear to impact early topological development in brain networks important for emotion regulation. In the limbic network, sleep duration moderated this relationship, suggesting sleep may play a role in infant brain network development. Infant sleep problems are one of the most common complaints of new parents. Research to date has demonstrated a relationship between low parental cry tolerance and infant sleep problems. The aim of this study was to explore whether three emotion regulation strategies could increase parental cry tolerance. This study utilised a quasi-experimental design. We recruited 83 females (Mage= 32, SD= 5.26) comprising 3 groups: mothers of good sleeping infants aged 6–24 months, mothers of poor sleeping infants aged 6–24 months, and good sleeping women aged 23–40 years without children. Participants were instructed to listen to crying audio segments and indicate when they felt the child needed to be tended to (measured in seconds). This crying audio was paired with one of three emotion-regulation strategies (i.e., music, gaming, reappraisal). Each participant completed all 4 cry conditions which were counterbalanced to control for order effects. We found that all three strategies yielded significantly longer reaction times (indicating higher cry tolerance) compared to the control condition (p <.001). We also found that mothers of poor sleepers and good sleeping women benefitted from all three emotion regulation strategies compared to control (p <.001 and p = <.05, respectively). The cry tolerance of mothers of good sleepers, on the other hand, did not differ between the control condition and any of the strategies (all ps >.05). This demonstrates that cry tolerance can be increased using emotion regulation strategies, such as distraction via music or gaming, and reappraisal. Summary: Perinatal depression and anxiety are common and associated with sleep problems in the offspring. Depression and anxiety are commonly comorbid, yet often studied independently. Our study used an integrative measure of anxiety and depressive symptoms to examine the associations of maternal mental health (mid‐pregnancy and postnatal) with infant sleep during the first year of life. A total of 797 mother–child dyads from the 'Growing Up in Singapore Towards healthy Outcome' cohort study provided infant sleep data at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months of age, using the caregiver reported Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire. Maternal mental health was assessed at 26–28 weeks gestation and 3 months postpartum using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, Beck Depression Inventory and State–Trait Anxiety Inventory. Bifactor modelling with the individual questionnaire items produced a general affect factor score that provided an integrated measure of anxiety and depressive symptoms. Linear mixed models were used to model the sleep outcomes, with adjustment for maternal age, education, parity, ethnicity, sex of the child and maternal sleep quality concurrent with maternal mental health assessment. We found that poorer mid‐pregnancy, but not postpartum, maternal mental health was associated with longer wake after sleep onset duration across the first year of life (β = 49, 95% confidence interval 13–85 min). Poor maternal mental health during mid‐pregnancy is linked to longer period of night awakening in the offspring during infancy. Abstract Background This scoping review focuses on infant sleep-related factors and themes that are relevant when health practitioners provide preventive health services to expectant and new parents. Methods A systematic literature search in CINAHL, PubMed, and PsycINFO, published in 2010 or later, identified 1661 records. The search was further narrowed to focus on sleep in healthy term-born infants until the second half of the first year of life. A blinded review by both authors covered 136 papers, of which 43 papers were reviewed in the full text. Finally, 38 articles were included in the data extraction. Results The analysis process showed that the selected studies formed three main information categories: 11 studies thematised safe infant sleep issues, 10 studies described design and findings from sleep-related intervention studies, and 17 studies focused on different parent-child interactive aspects that may influence the quality and duration of infant sleep in the first six months of life. The main finding is that knowledge about early infant sleep is very complex, and includes both child, parent, and environmental factors. Several studies have shown that the concepts and factors related to safe infant sleep also influence the development of healthy infant sleep patterns. Thus, these aspects are interwoven with each other and should be addressed together in communication with parents. Conclusions Health practitioners with different professional backgrounds need to search for an agreement on when and how different aspects of sleep-related knowledge should be communicated to new and expectant parents to enable the design of national follow-up programs. Parents want coherent and personalized services regarding infant sleep issues that may allow them to choose sleeping arrangements, routines, and behaviors that fit in with their sociocultural attitudes and traditions. Many different sources and formats may be used to empower parents regarding infant sleep issues. Studies have described the use of group or individual meetings, videos, and written materials. The key issue is the importance of consistent and seamless knowledge-based services.

New parents' sexual frequency and desire fluctuate throughout the transition to parenthood (i.e., the first year after childbirth). Poorer infant sleep and parental sleep are each associated with lower sexual frequency and desire in cross-sectional research. According to the theory, infant sleep might shape new parents' sexual frequency and desire in so far as it disrupts parental sleep, though this pathway has yet to be examined. We examined the role of parental sleep in the indirect pathway between infant sleep and sexual frequency and sexual desire in couples, both within and between-person, during the first-year postpartum. In a dyadic longitudinal study, 203 first-time mothers and their partners reported on infant sleep quality, parental sleep, sexual frequency, and sexual desire at 3-, 6-, 9-, and 12-months postpartum. Poorer infant sleep was associated with mothers' (within-couple) and partners' (between-couple) poorer sleep and, in turn, lower sexual frequency for the couple. For both mothers (within-person) and partners (between-person), poorer infant sleep was associated with their own lower sexual desire through poorer parental sleep via the indirect pathway. Ongoing assessment of infant sleep and parental sleep may reveal opportunities to mitigate the negative effects of poor sleep on new parents' sexual relationships. Purpose: This study explores the association between the duration and variation of infant sleep trajectories and subsequent cognitive school readiness at 48-50 months. Methods: Participants were 288 multi-ethnic children, within the Growing Up in Singapore Towards healthy Outcomes (GUSTO) cohort. Caregiver-reported total, night and day sleep durations were obtained at 3, 6, 9, 12, 18, 24 using the Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire and 54 months using the Child Sleep Habits Questionnaire. Total, night and day sleep trajectories with varying durations (short, moderate, or long) and variability (consistent or variable; defined by standard errors) were identified. The cognitive school readiness test battery was administered when the children were between 48 and 50 months old. Both unadjusted adjusted analysis of variance models and adjusted analysis of covariance models (for confounders) were performed to assess associations between sleep trajectories and individual school readiness tests in the domains of language, numeracy, general cognition and memory. Results: In the unadjusted models, children with short variable total sleep trajectories had poorer performance on language tests compared to those with longer and more consistent trajectories. In both unadjusted and adjusted models, children with short variable night sleep trajectories had poorer numeracy knowledge compared to their counterparts with long consistent night sleep trajectories. There were no equivalent associations between sleep trajectories and school readiness performance for tests in the general cognition or memory domains. There were no significant findings for day sleep trajectories. Conclusion: Findings suggest that individual differences in longitudinal sleep duration patterns from as early as 3 months of age may be associated with language and numeracy aspects of school readiness at 48-50 months of age. Introduction: The study objectives were to determine the relationships between postpartum depression and maternal and infant sleep parameters and to examine the impact of infant feeding method on infant and maternal sleep and postpartum depression symptomatology. Methods: Participants were 61 new mothers aged 18 to 45 years old, and their full-term, normal birth-weight, singleton infants. Participants were recruited from a large teaching hospital in northeast England. Data collection took place in participants' homes. The study used a prospective longitudinal design, with data collected at six, 12 and 18 weeks postpartum. We collected data on total sleep time, longest sleep period, wake after sleep onset, and night waking for mothers and infants objectively from actigraphic records and subjectively from maternal sleep logs. Participants reported on sleep disturbances using the General Sleep Disturbances Scale, on maternal sleepiness, and on depression symptomatology using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. Results: Scores on the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale and General Sleep Disturbances Scale were consistently correlated with each other (6 weeks r = 0.452, p < 0.01; 12 weeks r = 0.317, p < 0.05; 18 weeks r = 0.493, p < 0.01), and did not correlate with objective measures or subjective reports of maternal or infant sleep. Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale scores at six, 12 and 18 weeks were predicted by General Sleep Disturbances Scale, prior Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale score, or both, but not by sleep parameters. With regard to infant feeding method, EPDS score was not higher among exclusively breastfeeding than among exclusively formula-feeding participants at any time point (6 weeks t = 0.306, p = 0.762; 12 weeks t = 0.343, p = 0.733; 18 weeks t = 0.426; p = 0.673). Different pathways emerged to predict Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale score for exclusively breastfeeding and exclusively formula-feeding women. Discussion: Postpartum depression may be associated with disturbed sleep due to negative perception of sleep among depressed women, rather than disrupted sleep causing postpartum depression. With regard to infant feeding method, exclusively breastfeeding women are not more likely to suffer from postpartum depression, and different pathways may predict development of postpartum depression symptoms in exclusively breastfeeding and exclusively formula feeding women. Introduction: The architecture and function of sleep during infancy and early childhood has not been fully described in the scientific literature. The impact of early sleep disruption on cognitive and physical development is also under-studied. The aim of this review was to investigate early childhood sleep development over the first two years and its association with neurodevelopment. Methods: This review was conducted according to the 2009 PRISMA guidelines. Four databases (OVID Medline, Pubmed, CINAHL, and Web of Science) were searched according to predefined search terms. Results: Ninety-three studies with approximately 90,000 subjects from demographically diverse backgrounds were included in this review. Sleep is the predominant state at birth. There is an increase in NREM and a decrease in REM sleep during the first two years. Changes in sleep architecture occur in tandem with development. There are more studies exploring sleep and early infancy compared to mid and late infancy and early childhood. Discussion: Sleep is critical for memory, learning, and socio-emotional development. Future longitudinal studies in infants and young children should focus on sleep architecture at each month of life to establish the emergence of key characteristics, especially from 7–24 months of age, during periods of rapid neurodevelopmental progress. Infants born sick or preterm and admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) face challenges to their sleep and the establishment of breastfeeding. The reported sleep patterns of NICU graduates are conflicting, and there is evidence of bi-directional relationships between infant feeding and sleep challenges and poor maternal mental health. A prospective observational longitudinal cohort study was conducted on mothers of sick/preterm infants with ≥ 5 days admission to the NICU. Participants were recruited at discharge, with follow up at 2 and 6 weeks, and 3, 6, and 9 months. Infant sleep, settle and cry patterns, maternal bother with infant behaviours, and maternal confidence were measured using the Sleep and Settle Questionnaire (SSQ). Feeding information was obtained, and breastfeeding confidence was measured using the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale–Short Form (BSES-SF). Our sample consisted of 94 mothers of 101 sick/preterm infants. The range of infant birth gestations was 23–42/40 weeks, with n = 37 (36.6%) born < 33/40 weeks, n = 26 (25.7%) born at 33 to 36+6/40 weeks, and n = 38 (37.6%) born ≥ 37 weeks. The NICU length of stay was 5–173 days. Linear mixed modelling was used to examine associations between maternal bother and infant feeding and sleep variables. Night waking frequency (p < 0.001), durations of crying (day, evening, night; all p ≤ 0.001), and durations of settling (evening, p = 0.010) were positively associated with increased maternal bother scores. Maternal confidence was negatively associated with maternal bother (p < 0.001). The median BSES-SF score at discharge was 59/70, with 49.5% of mothers no longer breastfeeding by 6 months. Maternal bother did not differ according to feeding method (p = 0.44), or birth gestation subgroup (i.e., born < 33 weeks, 33 to 36+6 weeks, or term sick) (p = 0.44). Whether NICU infants were term sick or preterm was not associated with maternal concern with infant sleep and settling patterns in the 9 months after hospital discharge. Mothers of sick/preterm infants reported greater bother with increased night waking and longer durations of crying and evening settling. The findings from this study can inform individualised anticipatory guidance and support for this vulnerable population.

Abstract Background Although some women experience anger as a mood problem after childbirth, postpartum anger has been neglected by researchers. Mothers’ and infants’ poor sleep quality during the postpartum period has been associated with mothers’ depressive symptoms; however, links between mothers’ sleep quality and postpartum anger are unclear. This study aimed to determine proportions of women with intense anger, depressive symptoms, and comorbid intense anger and depressive symptoms, and to examine mothers’ and infants’ sleep quality as correlates of postpartum anger. Methods This cross-sectional survey study was advertised as an examination of mothers’ and babies’ sleep. Women, with healthy infants between 6 and 12 months of age, were recruited using community venues. The survey contained validated measures of sleep quality for mothers and infants, and fatigue, social support, anger, depressive symptoms, and cognitions about infant sleep. Results 278 women participated in the study. Thirty-one percent of women (n = 85) reported intense anger (≥ 90th percentile on State Anger Scale) while 26% (n = 73) of mothers indicated probable depression (>12 on Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale). Over half of the participants rated their sleep as poor (n = 144, 51.8%). Using robust regression analysis, income (β = -0.11, p < 0.05), parity (β = 0.2, p < 0.01), depressive symptoms (β = 0.22, p < 0.01), and mothers’ sleep quality (β = 0.10, p < 0.05), and anger about infant sleep (β = 0.25, p < 0.01) were significant predictors of mothers’ anger. Conclusions Mothers’ sleep quality and anger about infant sleep are associated with their state anger. Clinicians can educate families about sleep pattern changes during the perinatal time frame and assess women’s mood and perceptions of their and their infants’ sleep quality in the first postpartum year. They can also offer evidence-based strategies for improving parent-infant sleep. Such health promotion initiatives could reduce mothers’ anger and support healthy sleep.

ObjectiveAnemia has been reported to adversely influence sleep in infants. However, the association between anemia in pregnancy and infant sleep remains unclear. We aimed to examine the association between maternal anemia in pregnancy and sleep parameters of 6-month-old infants.MethodsWe enrolled 2,410 mother-infant pairs between 2018 and 2021 in Hefei. Data on maternal hemoglobin concentration were collected at 24–28 gestational weeks from the electronic medical records of the hospitals. Nocturnal and daytime sleep duration, number of night awakenings, nocturnal wakefulness, and sleep latency of infants aged 6 months were measured using the Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire with five items. A restricted cubic spline model was used to examine the relationship between maternal hemoglobin concentration and infant nocturnal sleep duration after adjusting for potential confounders.ResultsIn our study, 807 (33.5%) mothers had anemia during pregnancy. Compared to infants born to mothers without anemia, infants born to mothers with anemia in pregnancy had shorter nocturnal sleep duration [mean (SD), 560.29 (79.57) mins vs. 574.27 (75.36) mins] at the age of 6 months. Subgroup analysis showed consistent significant differences in nocturnal sleep duration between infant born to anemic and non-anemic mothers, except in case of stratification by preterm birth [mean difference (mins), 2.03 (95% CI, −20.01, −24.07)] and pre-pregnancy obesity [mean difference (mins), −0.85 (95% CI, −16.86, −15.16)]. A J-shaped nonlinear correlation curve was observed between maternal hemoglobin concentration and infant nocturnal sleep duration. Compared with mothers without daily iron supplementation, mothers who had daily iron supplementation had higher hemoglobin concentrations [mean (SD), 112.39 (11.33) g/L vs. 110.66 (10.65) g/L] at delivery and their infants had longer nocturnal sleep duration [mean (SD), 565.99 (82.46) mins vs. 553.66 (76.03) mins].ConclusionAnemia in pregnancy may have an adverse influence on the sleep of 6-mon-old infants, and the relationship between maternal hemoglobin concentration and nocturnal sleep duration is nonlinear.

Changes in infant night waking during the first year of life are associated with individual (e.g., prematurity) and family (e.g., caregiver psychopathology) factors. This study examined the association between infant night waking and caregiver anxious‐depressive symptoms during the first year of life in preterm and term infants. We considered between‐person differences and within‐person changes in caregiver anxious‐depressive symptoms in relation to changes in infant night waking from 2‐ to 9‐months. Racially (30.0% Black, 60.4% White, 9.5% multiracial/other) and socioeconomically (40.0% below median household income) diverse caregivers (N = 445) of full term (n = 258) and preterm (n = 187) infants were recruited from hospitals and clinics in two midwestern states. Caregivers completed measures of anxious‐depression and their infant's night waking at four sampling periods (2‐, 4‐, 6‐, and 9‐months). Infant night wakings declined from 2‐ to 9‐months. Between‐person differences were observed, such that caregivers with higher average anxious‐depressive symptoms or infants born full term reported more night wakings. Within‐person effects of caregiver anxious‐depressive symptoms were not significant. Caregiver anxious‐depression is closely associated with infant night wakings. By considering a caregiver's average severity of anxious‐depression, healthcare providers can more effectively plan infant sleep interventions. This article describes the author's research journey exploring infant and toddler sleep. From polygraphic recording in hospital nurseries to using videosomnography in homes, the author traced the longitudinal development of infant/toddler nighttime sleep and waking behaviors. The home-based video observations led to a redefinition of a pediatric milestone; namely, "sleeping through the night," and provided a framework for assessing and treating infant/toddler nighttime sleep problems. A systematic review of qualitative studies was conducted to explore how parents perceive sleep quality in their infants aged 0–24 months and the factors that influence these perceptions. A systematic search of the databases Scopus, Embase, Cinahl, PsycInfo and MEDLINE, was undertaken to identify eligible peer‐reviewed studies published between 2006–2021. Ten papers met inclusion criteria and were subsequently included in the review. Evaluation of papers with the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme qualitative checklist classified papers as weak, moderate or strong, with half considered strong. Thematic synthesis identified one superordinate theme, culture, and five interrelated subordinate themes regarding how parents perceive their infant's sleep and the factors that may influence these perceptions. These themes were: (1) Infants physical and emotional comfort; (2) Beliefs regarding safety; (3) Parental and familial wellbeing; (4) Perceived degree of infant agency; (5) Influence of external beliefs and opinions. The findings from this review may assist practitioners in providing parents with personalized and culturally sensitive information regarding infant sleep and may also inform antenatal and early intervention practices, subsequently minimizing parental distress regarding infant sleep patterns. Objective/background: Slow wave activity (SWA) and sigma frequency activity (SFA) are hallmarks of NREM sleep EEG and important indicators of neural plasticity, development of the central nervous system, and cognition. However, little is known about the factors that modulate these sleep EEG activities, especially in small children.Patients/methods: We analyzed the power spectral densities of SWA (1-4 Hz) and SFA range (10-15 Hz) from six EEG derivations of 56 infants (8 months) and 60 toddlers (24 months) during their all-night sleep and during the first and the last half of night sleep. The spectral values were compared between the four seasons.Results: In the spring group of infants, compared with the darker seasons, SFA was lower in the centro-occipital EEG derivations during both halves of the night. The SWA findings of the infants were restricted to the last half of the night (SWA2) and frontally, where SWA2 was higher during winter than spring. The toddlers presented less frontal SWA2 during winter compared with autumn. Both age groups showed a reduction in both SWA and SFA towards the last half of the night.Conclusions: The sleep EEG spectral power densities are more often associated with seasons in infants' SFA range. The results might stem from seasonally changing light exposure, but the exact mechanism warrants further study. Moreover, contrary to the adult-like increment of SFA, the SFA at both ages was lower at the last part of the night sleep. Study Objectives: We explored the interplay between infant temperament, sleep characteristics, and bedtime practices., Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study involving a large sample of infants 9-13 months of age (n = 623). Sleep data were collected through auto-videosomnography, allowing for objective, noninvasive assessment of sleep in an infant's ecological environment. Infant temperament and bedtime practices were assessed with questionnaires completed by parents., Results: Results revealed significant correlations between negative affectivity and disrupted sleep patterns, including shorter sleep duration, more night awakenings, and increased parental interventions. Infants falling asleep while being breast/bottle feeding or while being held/rocked had shorter nocturnal sleep duration, lower sleep efficiency, later bedtime, earlier wake-up time, and more parental interventions. Objectives: To investigate the association of infant sleep and sleep trajectories through the first year of life with infant neurodevelopment., Methods: This study was conducted with 3251 infants in China. Sleep parameters were evaluated by the Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire at 42days, 6months, and 1year of age. Neurodevelopment was evaluated at 1year of age using the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, Third Edition. The latent variable growth curve model was used to evaluate the developmental trajectories of infant sleep, including total sleep duration trajectories, night awakening trajectories and sleep onset latency trajectories. Poisson regression was applied to assess the association between sleep parameters and sleep trajectories and infant neurodevelopment., Results: Infants with frequent night awakenings at 6months had a higher risk of nonoptimal gross motor development. Additionally, infants with prolonged sleep onset latency at 1year had an increased risk of nonoptimal fine and gross motor development. A consistent frequent night-awakening trajectory increased the risk of nonoptimal gross motor development (adjusted relative risk, 1.52; 95% confidence interval, 1.09 to 2.10). Furthermore, an increasing trajectory in sleep onset latency was associated with an increased risk of nonoptimal fine (adjusted relative risk, 2.70; 95% confidence interval, 1.12 to 6.51) and gross motor development (adjusted relative risk, 2.76; 95% confidence interval, 1.70 to 4.48). Background: Infant care, crucial for the well-being of infants, is an inherent human practice. Although there are important implications of infant care practices on infant health, there is a dearth of comprehensive studies covering all important aspects of infant care in an individual study. Objectives: To determine practices regarding infant feeding, infant sleep, use of pacifiers, and immunization, and to explore the association of these practices with mother's demographic data. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a self-administrated questionnaire distributed among mothers attending well-baby clinics in Primary Health Care Centers (PHCCs), Unaizah city, Qassim region, Saudi Arabia. By using the two-stage cluster sampling method, 50 women participated from each of the four selected PHCCs, leading to a total of 200 participants. The survey was conducted from December 2020 to February 2021. Data were analyzed using SPSS software. Results: A total of 124 (62%) respondents were between the ages of 26 and 35 years, 64% had a bachelor's degree, and 69.5% were housewives. Breastfeeding was practiced by 88% of women, 48% began infant weaning at 6 months of age, and 49% put their infant to sleep on their back. Up-to-date vaccination was reported for 188 (94%) infants. Infant pacifier use was reported by 58% of the respondents, and 82.5% of the participants had been offered formula milk for the newborn at the hospital. Vaginal delivery, absence of complications during pregnancy or labor, presence of a housemaid, and family income of more than 10,000 Saudi Riyals were significantly associated with better infant care practices. Conclusion: The study participants have good practices for certain infant care aspects such as immunization; however, improvement is needed for other practices, including weaning at the proper age, infant sleep position, and the use of pacifiers. Administrative measures are required to monitor the use of formula milk at hospitals and to enhance health education for mothers.

BackgroundWestern parents swaddle infants to promote sleep and reduce night-waking, however recent evidence of the effects of swaddling on the sleep of healthy infants has not been systematically reviewed.ObjectiveTo investigate the effect of swaddling on the sleep of infants up to 1 year of age using a narrative synthesis approach.Data SourcesWe systematically searched five academic databases, including the Cochrane trial registry (Pubmed, PsycINFO, Embase, the Cochrane library, and Blackwell Synergy). We manually searched reference lists and citations of included studies and reference lists of existing reviews.Study SelectionStudies of any type, published since 2007, reporting primary data whose subjects were humans up to 12 months of age with outcome measures relating to the impact of swaddling on sleep and arousal.Data ExtractionBy hand using a customized template. A narrative synthesis is used to present the results.ResultsIn total 171 studies were retrieved with 115 studies discarded at title. A further 43 were discarded at abstract, and six were discarded at full text. Two papers were combined as they reported on the same study giving a total of 6 studies that met the inclusion criteria for the review. An evidence hierarchy was used to assess Risk of Bias in the included studies; the results are presented via a narrative synthesis. Swaddling was associated with increased duration of quiet sleep in infants and a significantly reduced number of sleep state changes among infants naïve to the intervention.LimitationsThe integrity of the intervention (swaddling) including its baseline characteristics, was defined broadly across the included studies limiting the interpretation and transferability of the results of this review.ConclusionsSwaddling appears to increase quiet sleep duration in infants and reduces the number of sleep state changes among infants naïve to the intervention. Parents should be made aware that implementing conditions unfavorable to arousability may increase SUDI risk among infant who have not previously been swaddled. This review has relevance for informing future practice recommendations and parent advice as well as in designing future studies.

Background: Although some women experience anger as a mood problem after childbirth, postpartum anger has been neglected by researchers. Mothers' and infants' poor sleep quality during the postpartum period has been associated with mothers' depressive symptoms; however, links between mothers' sleep quality and postpartum anger are unclear. This study aimed to determine proportions of women with intense anger, depressive symptoms, and comorbid intense anger and depressive symptoms, and to examine mothers' and infants' sleep quality as correlates of postpartum anger. Methods: This cross-sectional survey study was advertised as an examination of mothers' and babies' sleep. Women, with healthy infants between 6 and 12 months of age, were recruited using community venues. The survey contained validated measures of sleep quality for mothers and infants, and fatigue, social support, anger, depressive symptoms, and cognitions about infant sleep. Results: 278 women participated in the study. Thirty-one percent of women (n = 85) reported intense anger (≥ 90th percentile on State Anger Scale) while 26% (n = 73) of mothers indicated probable depression (>12 on Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale). Over half of the participants rated their sleep as poor (n = 144, 51.8%). Using robust regression analysis, income (β = -0.11, p < 0.05), parity (β = 0.2, p < 0.01), depressive symptoms (β = 0.22, p < 0.01), and mothers' sleep quality (β = 0.10, p < 0.05), and anger about infant sleep (β = 0.25, p < 0.01) were significant predictors of mothers' anger. Conclusions: Mothers' sleep quality and anger about infant sleep are associated with their state anger. Clinicians can educate families about sleep pattern changes during the perinatal time frame and assess women's mood and perceptions of their and their infants' sleep quality in the first postpartum year. They can also offer evidence-based strategies for improving parent-infant sleep. Such health promotion initiatives could reduce mothers' anger and support healthy sleep. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: This scoping review focuses on infant sleep-related factors and themes that are relevant when health practitioners provide preventive health services to expectant and new parents.Methods: A systematic literature search in CINAHL, PubMed, and PsycINFO, published in 2010 or later, identified 1661 records. The search was further narrowed to focus on sleep in healthy term-born infants until the second half of the first year of life. A blinded review by both authors covered 136 papers, of which 43 papers were reviewed in the full text. Finally, 38 articles were included in the data extraction.Results: The analysis process showed that the selected studies formed three main information categories: 11 studies thematised safe infant sleep issues, 10 studies described design and findings from sleep-related intervention studies, and 17 studies focused on different parent-child interactive aspects that may influence the quality and duration of infant sleep in the first six months of life. The main finding is that knowledge about early infant sleep is very complex, and includes both child, parent, and environmental factors. Several studies have shown that the concepts and factors related to safe infant sleep also influence the development of healthy infant sleep patterns. Thus, these aspects are interwoven with each other and should be addressed together in communication with parents.Conclusions: Health practitioners with different professional backgrounds need to search for an agreement on when and how different aspects of sleep-related knowledge should be communicated to new and expectant parents to enable the design of national follow-up programs. Parents want coherent and personalized services regarding infant sleep issues that may allow them to choose sleeping arrangements, routines, and behaviors that fit in with their sociocultural attitudes and traditions. Many different sources and formats may be used to empower parents regarding infant sleep issues. Studies have described the use of group or individual meetings, videos, and written materials. Background: Infant care, crucial for the well-being of infants, is an inherent human practice. Although there are important implications of infant care practices on infant health, there is a dearth of comprehensive studies covering all important aspects of infant care in an individual study. Objectives: To determine practices regarding infant feeding, infant sleep, use of pacifiers, and immunization, and to explore the association of these practices with mother's demographic data. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a self-administrated questionnaire distributed among mothers attending well-baby clinics in Primary Health Care Centers (PHCCs), Unaizah city, Qassim region, Saudi Arabia. By using the two-stage cluster sampling method, 50 women participated from each of the four selected PHCCs, leading to a total of 200 participants. The survey was conducted from December 2020 to February 2021. Data were analyzed using SPSS software. Results: A total of 124 (62%) respondents were between the ages of 26 and 35 years, 64% had a bachelor's degree, and 69.5% were housewives. Breastfeeding was practiced by 88% of women, 48% began infant weaning at 6 months of age, and 49% put their infant to sleep on their back. Up-to-date vaccination was reported for 188 (94%) infants. Infant pacifier use was reported by 58% of the respondents, and 82.5% of the participants had been offered formula milk for the newborn at the hospital. Vaginal delivery, absence of complications during pregnancy or labor, presence of a housemaid, and family income of more than 10,000 Saudi Riyals were significantly associated with better infant care practices. Conclusion: The study participants have good practices for certain infant care aspects such as immunization; however, improvement is needed for other practices, including weaning at the proper age, infant sleep position, and the use of pacifiers. Abstract Background Overweight, obesity, and associated comorbidities are a pressing global issue among children of all ages, particularly among low-income populations. Rapid weight gain (RWG) in the first 6 months of infancy contributes to childhood obesity. Suboptimal sleep-wake patterns and gut microbiota (GM) have also been associated with childhood obesity, but little is known about their influences on early infant RWG. Sleep may alter the GM and infant metabolism, and ultimately impact obesity; however, data on the interaction between sleep-wake patterns and GM development on infant growth are scarce. In this study, we aim to investigate associations of infant sleep-wake patterns and GM development with RWG at 6 months and weight gain at 12 months. We also aim to evaluate whether temporal interactions exist between infant sleep-wake patterns and GM, and if these relations influence RWG. Methods The Snuggle Bug/ Acurrucadito study is an observational, longitudinal study investigating whether 24-h, actigraphy-assessed, sleep-wake patterns and GM development are associated with RWG among infants in their first year. Based on the Ecological Model of Growth, we propose a novel conceptual framework to incorporate sleep-wake patterns and the GM as metabolic contributors for RWG in the context of maternal-infant interactions, and familial and socio-physical environments. In total, 192 mother-infant pairs will be recruited, and sleep-wake patterns and GM development assessed at 3 and 8 weeks, and 3, 6, 9, and 12 months postpartum. Covariates including maternal and child characteristics, family and environmental factors, feeding practices and dietary intake of infants and mothers, and stool-derived metabolome and exfoliome data will be assessed. The study will apply machine learning techniques combined with logistic time-varying effect models to capture infant growth and aid in elucidating the dynamic associations between study variables and RWG. Discussion Repeated, valid, and objective assessment at clinically and developmentally meaningful intervals will provide robust measures of longitudinal sleep, GM, and growth. Project findings will provide evidence for future interventions to prevent RWG in infancy and subsequent obesity. The work also may spur the development of evidence-based guidelines to address modifiable factors that influence sleep-wake and GM development and prevent childhood obesity.

Postpartum sleep disruption is a risk factor for postpartum depression (PPD) as well as a potential treatment target. In the first 6 months after delivery, when the risk of PPD is greatest, fragmented maternal sleep is most often related to necessary infant night feedings. Clinicians' conversations about planning for and navigating postpartum sleep should include questions about patient expectations, cultural traditions, and available support. For women at high risk of PPD, or with moderate to severe PPD or other symptoms of mental illness, protecting one 4–5 hour period of consolidated nighttime sleep may be necessary and effective. This can be achieved by having another adult step in for 1–2 infant night feedings or by employing other strategies. The distinct influence of different, but comorbid, maternal mental health (MMH) difficulties (postpartum depression, anxiety, childbirth-related posttraumatic stress disorder) on infant sleep is unknown, although associations between MMH and infant sleep were reported. This cross-sectional survey aimed: (1) to examine associations between MMH symptoms and infant sleep; (2) to extract data-driven maternal MMH symptom profiles from MMH symptoms; and (3) to investigate the distinct influence of these MMH symptom profiles on infant sleep when including mediators and moderators. Mothers of 3–12-month-old infants (n = 410) completed standardized questionnaires on infant sleep, maternal perception of infant negative emotionality, and MMH symptoms. Data was analyzed using: (1) simple linear regressions; (2) factor analysis; and (3) structural equation modelling. MMH symptoms were all negatively associated with nocturnal sleep duration and only postpartum depression and anxiety symptoms were associated with night waking. Three MMH symptom profiles were extracted: depressive, anxious, and birth trauma profiles. Maternal perception of infant negative emotionality mediated the associations between the depressive or anxious profiles and infant sleep but only for particular infant ages or maternal education levels. The birth trauma profile was not associated with infant sleep. The relationships between MMH and infant sleep may involve distinct mechanisms contingent on maternal symptomatology. Methods to improve sleep in infants commonly involve some ignoring (extinction) but are often unpopular with mothers worried about infant distress when left to cry. Alternative more responsive methods are needed. This pilot study evaluated stress, maternal depressive symptomology and sleep in mother/infant dyads, between Responsive, Controlled Crying and Control groups. From 199 mother/infant dyads from any cultural background, 41 infants 4–12 months were randomly allocated to Responsive (RG, n = 15), Controlled Crying (CCG, n = 18) or Controls (Treatment as Usual, TAUG, n = 8), with 10 withdrawing after randomisation. Infant sleep (7-day sleep diaries) and stress (oral cortisol on two nights), maternal self-reported stress (Subjective Units of Distress, SUDS), maternal perceived infant distress (MPI-S) and symptoms of maternal depression (Edinburgh Post-natal Depression Scale, EPDS) were measured four times across 8 weeks. Sleep duration was not different between groups but Responsive woke less (p =.008). There were no differences in cortisol between groups across time points. Maternal SUDS was positively correlated with infant cortisol and MPI-S (p < 0.05) and mothers in the Responsive group were significantly less stressed (p = 0.02) and reported less symptoms of depression (p < 0.05). Findings in this small sample show Responsive methods are comparable to the extinction (Controlled Crying) in sleep outcomes but from a relational and maternal mental health perspective, are less stressful, offering families potential choices of sleep interventions. Caregivers are often concerned about baby behaviours. Without adequate counselling, parental response can lead to altering infant feeding and jeopardizing breastfeeding. We conducted a systematic review to assess the evidence about the influence of baby behaviours perceived as problematic (crying, sleep waking and posseting) on infant feeding decisions during the first 6 months of life (self‐reported milk insufficiency, breastfeeding duration and introduction of formula). The review focused on quantitative studies published in English, Portuguese or Spanish without date restriction. The search was designed with the support of a medical librarian and conducted in seven databases. Data were managed in Covidence and risk of bias was assessed through the Johanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal checklists. Synthesis of the literature was guided by a conceptual model of the impact of baby behaviours on caregivers feeding practices. We retrieved and reviewed 4312 titles/abstracts and selected 22 for review; 10 were purely descriptive and 12 were cross‐sectional, prospective and quasi‐experimental studies. Although studies from diverse regions were included in the review, more than half were from high‐income countries. All studies reported that baby behaviours affect feeding decisions, the most common baby behaviours studied were crying and fussiness, and the studies suggested relationships with lactation problems and reports of milk insufficiency, maternal breastfeeding confidence, breastfeeding duration and discontinuation, and introduction of formula. There are many factors that lead to perceiving baby behaviours as problematic and there is a need to provide anticipatory guidance to parents and caregivers, starting in pregnancy and counselling through well‐trained health providers. Key messages: Although normal infant behaviour is highly variable, caregivers often perceive infant fussing/crying, posseting and sleep to be problematic.How caregivers interpret such 'problems' is critical in shaping how they deal with them and the impacts they have on infant feeding practices.Developing baby behaviour is not routinely included in training of health care staff, who often misinterpret baby behaviours and advise changes in feeding strategies.There is a need for large‐scale studies addressing such issues, as well as clearer guidelines for health professionals and caregivers about common baby behaviours and how to cope with them.
