Der Kurzbericht gibt Einblicke in die wichtigsten Ergebnisse aus einer Umfrage die im Oktober 2022 durchgeführt wurde.

In den letzten Jahren gab es zahlreiche technische Innovationen wie CGM Systeme oder Insulin- pumpen, die das Leben von Menschen mit Typ-1-Diabetes erleichtert haben. Dies führt aber auch dazu, dass immer mehr Informationen zur Verfügung stehen. Das Ziel der vorliegenden Studie ist es, mehr über den täglichen Umgang mit Informationen zu erfahren. Dazu wurde die folgende Forschungsfrage gestellt: Welche Informationen nutzen Menschen mit Typ-1-Diabetes? Um diese Forschungsfrage zu beantworten, wurde eine quantitative Online-Befragung von Men- schen mit Typ-1-Diabetes von Prof. Dr. Matthias Fank an der Technischen Hochschule Köln durch- geführt. Die Online-Befragung bestand überwiegend aus 25 geschlossenen Fragen, die auf einer Skala von 0 bis 10 gestellt wurden. In die Auswertung gingen die Antworten von 1.025 Personen, die mindestens 18 Jahre alt sind, ein. Die wichtigste Information für Typ-1-Diabetiker ist der “aktuelle Wert“. Diesen haben 67,5% auf Platz 1 gesetzt. Der aktuelle Glukosewert wird durch CGM-Systeme bereitgestellt, die von 94,2% der Menschen mit Typ-1-Diabetes genutzt werden. Quartalsbesuche beim Diabetologen sind wichtig und liefern wichtige Informationen. Dieser Aussage stimmen 30,8% auf einer Skala von 0 bis 10 „voll und ganz“ zu. Nur 2,2% der Menschen mit Typ-1-Diabetes sind mit ihren derzeitigen Apps für die Diabetestherapie zufrieden. Der Wunsch nach einer herstellerunabhängigen App ist vorhanden. Die stärkste Zustim- mung mit einem Wert von 10 haben fast ein Viertel (24,6%) der Menschen mit Typ-1-Diabetes ge- wählt. Die Studie gibt einen Einblick in die Diabetestherapie und zeigt Handlungsbedarf auf.

Childhood compared to adolescence and adulthood is characterized by high neuroplasticity represented by accelerated cognitive maturation and rapid cognitive developmental trajectories. Natural growth, biological maturation and permanent interaction with the physical and social environment fosters motor and cognitive development in children. Of note, the promotion of physical activity, physical fitness, and motor skill learning at an early age is mandatory first, as these aspects are essential for a healthy development and an efficient functioning in everyday life across the life span and second, physical activity behaviors and lifestyle habits tend to track from childhood into adulthood. The main objective of the present thesis was to optimize and deepen the knowledge of motor and cognitive performance in young children and to develop an effective and age-appropriate exercise program feasible for the implementation in kindergarten and preschool settings. A systematic review with meta-analysis was conducted to examine the effectiveness of fundamental movement skill and exercise interventions in healthy preschool-aged children. Further, the relation between measures of physical fitness (i.e., static balance, muscle strength, power, and coordination) and attention as one domain of cognitive performance in preschool-aged children was analyzed. Subsequently, effects of a strength-dominated kindergarten-based exercise program on physical fitness components (i.e., static balance, muscle strength, power, and coordination) and cognitive performance (i.e., attention) compared to a usual kindergarten curriculum was examined. The systematic review included trials focusing on healthy young children in kindergarten or preschool settings that applied fundamental movement skill-enhancing intervention programs of at least 4 weeks and further reported standardized motor skill outcome measures for the intervention and the control group. Children aged 4-6 years from three kindergartens participated in the cross-sectional and the longitudinal study. Product-orientated measures were conducted for the assessment of muscle strength (i.e., handgrip strength), muscle power (i.e., standing long jump), balance (i.e., timed single-leg stand), coordination (hopping on right/left leg), and attentional span (i.e., “Konzentrations-Handlungsverfahren für Vorschulkinder” [concentration-action procedure for preschoolers]). With regards to the scientific literature, exercise and fundamental movement skill interventions are an effective method to promote overall proficiency in motor skills (i.e., object control and locomotor skills) in preschool children particularly when conducted by external experts with a duration of 4 weeks to 5 months. Moreover, significant medium associations were found between the composite score of physical fitness and attention as well as between coordination separately and attention in children aged 4-6 years. A 10-weeks strength-dominated exercise program implemented in kindergarten and preschool settings by educated and trained kindergarten teachers revealed significant improvements for the standing long jump test and the Konzentrations-Handlungsverfahren of intervention children compared to children of the control group. The findings of the present thesis imply that fundamental movement skill and exercise interventions improve motor skills (i.e., locomotor and object control skills). Nonetheless, more high-quality research is needed. Additionally, physical fitness, particularly high performance in complex fitness components (i.e., coordination measured with the hopping on one leg test), tend to predict attention in preschool age. Furthermore, an exercise program including strength-dominated exercises, fundamental movement skills and elements of gymnastics has a beneficial effect on jumping performance with a concomitant trend toward improvements in attentional capacity in healthy preschool children. Finally, it is recommended to start early with the integration of muscular fitness (i.e., muscle strength, muscle power, muscular endurance) next to coordination, agility, balance, and fundamental movement skill exercises into regular physical activity curriculums in kindergarten settings., Das Kindesalter ist im Vergleich zum Jugend- und Erwachsenenalter durch eine hohe Neuroplastizität, charakterisiert, welche durch beschleunigte Reifungsprozesse und rasche kognitive Entwicklungsverläufe gekennzeichnet ist. Natürliches Wachstum, biologische Reifung und die permanente Auseinandersetzung mit der physischen und sozialen Umwelt unterstützen und fördern die motorische und kognitive Entwicklung von Kindern. Bemerkenswert ist, dass bereits ab dem frühen Kindesalter die Förderung von körperlicher Aktivität, motorischen Fähigkeiten und Fertigkeiten unablässig ist, da sie zum einen wesentliche Faktoren für eine gesunde Entwicklung sowie eine effiziente alltägliche Funktionstüchtigkeit im Lebensverlauf darstellen und zum anderen das Aktivitätsverhalten und die Lebensgewohnheiten des Kindesalters tendenziell ins Erwachsenenalter übernommen werden. Die Zielstellung der vorliegenden Arbeit war es, das Wissen über motorische und kognitive Leistungsfähigkeit im frühen Kindesalter zu vertiefen und effektive altersgerechte Bewegungsprogramme für die Umsetzung im Setting Kindertagesstätte zu entwickeln. Es wurde ein systematisches Review mit Metaanalyse erarbeitet, um die Effekte von Bewegungsprogrammen zur Verbesserung elementarer Bewegungsfertigkeiten bei gesunden Vorschulkindern zu untersuchen. Zudem wurden die Zusammenhänge zwischen motorischen Fähigkeiten (z.B. statisches Gleichgewicht, Maximalkraft, Schnellkraft und Koordination) und der Konzentration, als ein Bereich der kognitiven Leistungsfähigkeit, im Kindesalter analysiert. Anschließend wurde die Wirksamkeit eines kraft-orientierten Bewegungsprogramms gegenüber einem gewöhnlichen Kindergartencurriculums auf motorische Fähigkeiten, wie statisches Gleichgewicht, Maximalkraft, Schnellkraft und Koordination sowie auf kognitive Leistungsfähigkeit, wie die Konzentration, überprüft. Das systematische Review beinhaltete Studien mit gesunden jungen Kindern im Setting Kindertagesstätte, welche Bewegungsprogramme von mindestens 4 Wochen zur Verbesserung der elementaren Bewegungsfertigkeiten durchführten und Ergebnisse der Interventions- sowie Kontrollgruppen mithilfe standardisierter motorischer Tests berichteten. In der Querschnitts- und Längsschnittstudie nahmen Kinder im Alter von 4-6 Jahren aus drei Kindertagesstätten teil. Ergebnisorientierte motorische Messungen wurden durchgeführt, um die Maximalkraft (Handkraft), die Schnellkraft (Standweitsprung), das Gleichgewicht (Einbeinstand), die Koordination (einbeiniges Hüpfen rechts/links) und die Konzentrationsfähigkeit (Konzentrations-Handlungsverfahren für Vorschulkinder (KHV-VK)) zu erheben. Mit Bezug zur wissenschaftlichen Literatur stellen Bewegungsprogramme eine effektive Möglichkeit dar, motorische Fertigkeiten (lokomotorische sowie objektbezogene Fertigkeiten) bei Vorschulkindern zu fördern, vor allem, wenn sie von externen Experten durchgeführt werden und eine Dauer von 4 Wochen bis 5 Monaten haben. Darüber hinaus konnten signifikante Zusammenhänge zwischen motorischen Fähigkeiten und der Konzentration sowie insbesondere zwischen der Koordination allein und der Konzentration bei Kindern im Alter von 4-6 Jahren gefunden werden. Ein 10-wöchiges kraft-orientiertes Bewegungsprogramm, welches durch geschultes und qualifiziertes Kindergartenpersonal in Kindertagesstätten durchgeführt wurde, führte zudem zu signifikanten Verbesserungen im Standweitsprung und im KHV-VK bei Kindern der Interventionsgruppe im Vergleich zu Kontrollgruppe. Die Ergebnisse der vorliegenden Arbeit zeigen, dass Bewegungsprogramme motorische Fertigkeiten, wie lokomotorische und objektbezogenen Fertigkeiten, verbessern. Dennoch gibt es Bedarf an weiterführenden, methodisch gut designten und qualitativ hochwertigen Interventionsstudien. Motorische Fähigkeiten, besonders gut ausgebildete komplexe Fähigkeiten wie die Koordination (gemessen mit dem einbeinigen Hüpfen), scheinen die Konzentrationsfähigkeit im Vorschulalter zu beeinflussen. Zudem verbessert ein Trainingsprogramm mit kraft-orientierte Übungen, elementare Bewegungsfertigkeiten und turnerischen Elementen die Sprungleistung und scheint gleichzeitig einen Einfluss auf die Konzentrationsfähigkeit bei gesunden Vorschulkindern zu haben. Letztendlich empfiehlt es sich, bereits in jungen Jahren Kraftfähigkeiten, wie Maximal- und Schnellkraft und Kraftausdauer neben Koordination, Agilität, Gleichgewicht und elementaren Bewegungsfertigkeiten zu schulen und diese in regelmäßige Bewegungsstunden im Setting Kindertagesstätte zu integrieren.

In recent years there have been numerous technical innovations such as CGM systems or insulin pumps that have made life easier for people with type 1 diabetes. However, this also means that more and more information is available. The aim of the present study is to find out more about the daily handling of information. The following research question was asked: What information do people with type 1 diabetes use? To answer this research question, a quantitative online survey of people with type 1 diabetes was conducted by Prof. Dr. Matthias Fank at the Technical University of Cologne. The online survey mainly consisted of 25 closed questions, which were asked on a scale from 0 to 10. The responses of 1,025 people who are at least 18 years old were included in the evaluation. The most important information for type 1 diabetics is the "current value". 67.5% have this on Place 1 placed. Current glucose levels are provided by CGM systems used by 94.2% of people with type 1 diabetes. Quarterly visits to the diabetologist are important and provide important information. 30.8% “completely” agree with this statement on a scale from 0 to 10. Only 2.2% of people with type 1 diabetes are satisfied with their current diabetes management apps. There is a desire for a manufacturer-independent app. The strongest agreement with a value of 10 was chosen by almost a quarter (24.6%) of the people with type 1 diabetes. The study provides an insight into diabetes therapy and shows the need for action.

application/pdf, 近年，児童虐待の結果，死亡事件に至るケースが報道される件数が増えてきている。こうした状況に鑑み，2019年6 月19日に「児童虐待防止対策の強化を図るための児童福祉法等の一部を改正する法律」が成立したが，依然として「事後対策の強化」の性格が強く，「予防対策の強化」の要素が弱い。本稿では，社会保障審議会児童部会児童虐待等要保護事例の検証に関する専門委員会による「子ども虐待による死亡事例等の検証結果等について」の「個別調査票による死亡事例の調査結果」の再検証をおこなった結果，経済的な困難が地域社会との関係を希薄化させ，児童虐待の発生を助長していることが示唆された。この結果を踏まえ，児童虐待の「社会要因」を低減する予防策強化の必要性について言及している。

Bildung benötigt Kommunikation. Nicht erst seit der Corona-Pandemie wird deutlich, wie dringend auch geeignete digitale Kommunikationstools zur Verständigung untereinander sowie zwischen Lernenden und Lehrenden benötigt werden. Zielführend und zeitgemäß sind derzeit u.a. Messenger-Apps als digitale Tools zur Kommunikation und Vermittlung in nicht nur inklusiven Berufsbildungskontexten. Denn Messenger sind ein gesellschaftlich und beruflich relevantes digitales Kommunikationstool, das in die Alltagswirklichkeit der Menschen in Deutschland längst Einzug gehalten hat (vgl. Bundesnetzagentur 2020). Die Nutzung ist kaum bzw. nicht mit finanziellen Mehrkosten verbunden, Messenger sind einfach zu bedienen und ermöglichen je nach Anbieter verschlüsselte Kommunikation, die für Bildungskontexte bedeutsam ist. Nicht nur für inklusive Bildungskontexte bieten Messenger-Apps neue methodische, didaktische und pädagogische Möglichkeiten, die die Lehre ergänzen und bereichern können. Diese gilt es zu explorieren und weiterzuentwickeln. Kernfragen des Papers sind also: - Worauf ist bei der Auswahl und dem Einsatz von Messengern in (inklusiven) Bildungseinrichtungen zu achten? (Kapitel 5.1) 1 - Wie kann der Einsatz geplant und vorbereitet werden? (Kapitel 5.2) - Welche pädagogischen Einsatzmöglichkeiten und Methoden gibt es (über rein organisatorische Funktionen hinaus)? (Kapitel 5.3) - Wie und mit welchen Erkenntnissen wurden die entwickelten Ideen im Anwendungsbeispiel umgesetzt? (Kapitel 6). Das Paper richtet sich an Digitalisierungsbeauftragte, Leitungen und Lehrende in Bildungseinrichtungen (weiterführende Schule und Erwachsenenbildung), die neue Wege der Vermittlung und Kommunikation mittels digitaler Tools gehen möchten. Es liefert Hinweise darauf, wie der Einsatz von Messengern zu Lehrzwecken – etwa in der beruflichen Bildung, in der beruflichen Rehabilitation, an allgemeinbildenden Schulen etc. – geplant und durchgeführt werden kann, und worauf dabei zu achten ist.

An ever-increasing number of prediction models is published every year in different medical specialties. Prognostic or diagnostic in nature, these models support medical decision making by utilizing one or more items of patient data to predict outcomes of interest, such as mortality or disease progression. While different computer tools exist that support clinical predictive modeling, I observed that the state of the art is lacking in the extent to which the needs of research clinicians are addressed. When it comes to model development, current support tools either 1) target specialist data engineers, requiring advanced coding skills, or 2) cater to a general-purpose audience, therefore not addressing the specific needs of clinical researchers. Furthermore, barriers to data access across institutional silos, cumbersome model reproducibility and extended experiment-to-result times significantly hampers validation of existing models. Similarly, without access to interpretable explanations, which allow a given model to be fully scrutinized, acceptance of machine learning approaches will remain limited. Adequate tool support, i.e., a software artifact more targeted at the needs of clinical modeling, can help mitigate the challenges identified with respect to model development, validation and interpretation. To this end, I conducted interviews with modeling practitioners in health care to better understand the modeling process itself and ascertain in what aspects adequate tool support could advance the state of the art. The functional and non-functional requirements identified served as the foundation for a software artifact that can be used for modeling outcome and risk prediction in health research. To establish the appropriateness of this approach, I implemented a use case study in the Nephrology domain for acute kidney injury, which was validated in two different hospitals. Furthermore, I conducted user evaluation to ascertain whether such an approach provides benefits compared to the state of the art and the extent to which clinical practitioners could benefit from it. Finally, when updating models for external validation, practitioners need to apply feature selection approaches to pinpoint the most relevant features, since electronic health records tend to contain several candidate predictors. Building upon interpretability methods, I developed an explanation-driven recursive feature elimination approach. This method was comprehensively evaluated against state-of-the art feature selection methods. Therefore, this thesis' main contributions are three-fold, namely, 1) designing and developing a software artifact tailored to the specific needs of the clinical modeling domain, 2) demonstrating its application in a concrete case in the Nephrology context and 3) development and evaluation of a new feature selection approach applicable in a validation context that builds upon interpretability methods. In conclusion, I argue that appropriate tooling, which relies on standardization and parametrization, can support rapid model prototyping and collaboration between clinicians and data scientists in clinical predictive modeling. Die Zahl der jährlich veröffentlichten Vorhersagemodelle in verschiedenen medizinischen Fachrichtungen nimmt stetig zu. Solche prognostischen oder diagnostischen Modelle helfen bei der medizinischen Entscheidungsfindung, indem sie zum Beispiel Vorhersagen zur Mortalität oder zum Krankheitsverlauf erlauben. Obwohl bereits Softwarewerkzeuge für die Entwicklung klinischer Vorhersagemodelle existieren, genügt der Stand der Technik noch immer nicht den Anforderungen klinischer Wissenschaftler. So kommt es, dass aktuelle Softwarewerkzeuge zur Modellentwicklung entweder 1) auf die Anforderungen von Datenwissenschaftlicher zugeschnitten sind und folglich Programmierkenntnisse voraussetzen, oder 2) zu generisch sind und somit den tatsächlichen Anforderungen klinischer Wissenschaftler nicht gerecht werden. Überdies wird die Reproduzierbarkeit der Modelle sowie die Durchführung und Validierung von Experimenten durch verteilte Datenbestände und Informationen, sogenannte Datensilos, stark eingeschränkt. Ähnlich verhält es sich bei der Akzeptanz von Modellen des maschinellen Lernens, welche ohne interpretierbare Erklärungen von Vorhersagen kaum gegeben sein dürfte. Eine auf diese Anforderungen klinischer Modellbildung ausgerichtete Softwarelösung kann dabei helfen, die identifizierten Herausforderungen bezüglich Modellentwicklung, -validierung und -interpretation zu bewältigen und die Akzeptanz und Nutzung unter Klinikern zu stärken. Um den Modellierungsprozess zu verstehen und zu eruieren, in welchem Ausmaß eine angemessene Softwarelösung den Stand der Technik voranbringen könnte, wurden im Zuge dieser Arbeit Interviews mit praktizierenden Modellierern im Gesundheitsbereich geführt. Daraus leiten sich funktionale und nichtfunktionale Anforderungen ab, die als Grundlage eines Softwareartefaktes für die Modellierung von Outcome- und Risikovorhersagen in der Gesundheitsforschung verwendet wurden. Um die Eignung meines Ansatzes zu verifizieren, habe ich den Anwendungsfall „akutes Nierenversagen“ im Bereich der Nephrologie in zwei verschiedenen Krankenhäusern betrachtet und validiert. Darüber hinaus wurde eine Nutzerevaluierung durchgeführt um herauszufinden, ob ein solcher Ansatz im Vergleich zum Stand der Technik Vorteile bietet und inwieweit klinische Praktiker davon profitieren können. Außerdem müssen praktizierende Kliniker bei der Aktualisierung von Modellen für die externe Validierung Ansätze zur Merkmalsselektion anwenden, da elektronische Gesundheitsakten in der Regel mehrere erklärende Merkmale enthalten. Aufbauend auf Methoden zur Interpretierbarkeit habe ich einen erklärungsorientierten rekursiven Eliminierungsansatz entwickelt. Dieser neue Ansatz wurde umfassend mit Standardverfahren der Merkmalsselektion verglichen. Daraus leiten sich folgende Forschungsbeiträge dieser Arbeit ab: 1) Entwurf und Entwicklung eines Softwareartefakts, welches auf die speziellen Bedürfnisse der klinischen Modellierungsdomäne zugeschnitten ist, 2) Demonstration seiner Anwendbarkeit für das konkrete Fallbeispiel „akutes Nierenversagen“ und 3) Entwicklung und Evaluierung eines neuen, auf Interpretierbarkeitsmethoden basierenden Ansatzes, zur Merkmalsselektion in einem Validierungskontext. Zusammenfassend ist zu folgern, dass ein geeignetes auf Standardisierung und Parametrisierung gestütztes Tool die schnelle prototypische Entwicklung und die Zusammenarbeit von Klinikern und Datenwissenschaftlern an klinischen Vorhersagemodellen unterstützen kann.

Educational institutions have increasing needs for professional digital communication. When selecting suitable communication tools, there is a need for appropriate information as a basis for decision-making. Messenger communication in particular is strongly integrated into people's private everyday lives. While needs for extensive data-secure communication in educational contexts are increasing, there is a lack of concepts for data-protected and privacy-preserving support of educational processes through software (Karaboga et al 2014; Digitalcourage e.V. n.d.) , as well as for mandatory training for professionals (Zorn, Tillmann, and Kaminski 2014; Imort and Niesyto 2014), and reliable information for viable software alternatives. This paper outlines the specific requirements of educational institutions when selecting suitable software, using messenger communication as an example. From these requirements, criteria for needed information are presented as a basis for software selection decisions in three categories: data protection/privacy, accessibility/low-barrier, practicability. Since no criteria and good practice suggestions were available so far, a study was conducted to elicit the characteristics of potentially suitable messenger software. To this end, the necessary criteria for the three categories mentioned were first defined and then German and well-known international messengers were tested for data protection criteria. Based on the results for conformity with the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) as an inclusion criterion, the messengers in question were subjected to a practical test. In the process, additional practicality criteria were developed, in part iteratively. In addition to institution-internal messengers, six services were identified among the freely available provider-dependent messengers that can be used in a GDPR-compliant manner, at least for users over the age of 16. At the time of publication, this leaves only five: Threema, Wire, SID, Ginlo, Chiffry. Furthermore, provider-independent messenger systems that adhere to the international standard protocol for the exchange of chat messages (XMPP) appear to be a viable option for educational institutions. In-house or commissioned server hosting would then be possible and a corresponding agreement for commissioned data processing can be concluded with an IT service provider. The decisions to use "Wire" and "Threema Work" in the IDiT project context are explained and justified. The context was vocational training for prospective office management clerks at vocational schools and vocational training centers. Although the underlying considerations are tailored to the project context (application in the Berufsförderungswerk Köln), they can be generalized.

Die vorliegende Untersuchung analysierte den direkten Zusammenhang eines berufsbezogenen Angebots Sozialer Gruppenarbeit mit dem Ergebnis beruflicher Wiedereingliederung bei Rehabilitandinnen und Rehabilitanden in besonderen beruflichen Problemlagen. Sie wurde von der Deutschen Rentenversicherung Bund als Forschungsprojekt vom 01.01.2013 bis 31.12. 2015 gefördert und an der Professur für Rehabilitationswissenschaften der Universität Potsdam realisiert. Die Forschungsfrage lautete: Kann eine intensive sozialarbeiterische Gruppenintervention im Rahmen der stationären medizinischen Rehabilitation soweit auf die Stärkung sozialer Kompetenzen und die Soziale Unterstützung von Rehabilitandinnen und Rehabilitanden einwirken, dass sich dadurch langfristige Verbesserungen hinsichtlich der beruflichen Wiedereingliederung im Vergleich zur konventionellen Behandlung ergeben? Die Studie gliederte sich in eine qualitative und eine quantitative Erhebung mit einer zwischenliegenden Intervention. Eingeschlossen waren 352 Patientinnen und Patienten im Alter zwischen 18 und 65 Jahren mit kardiovaskulären Diagnosen, deren Krankheitsbilder häufig von komplexen Problemlagen begleitet sind, verbunden mit einer schlechten sozialmedizinischen Prognose. Die Evaluation der Gruppenintervention erfolgte in einem clusterrandomisierten kontrollierten Studiendesign, um einen empirischen Nachweis darüber zu erbringen, inwieweit die Intervention gegenüber der regulären sozialarbeiterischen Behandlung höhere Effekte erzielen kann. Die Interventionsgruppen nahmen am Gruppenprogramm teil, die Kontrollgruppen erhielten die reguläre sozialarbeiterische Behandlung. Im Ergebnis konnte mit dieser Stichprobe kein Nachweis zur Verbesserung der beruflichen Wiedereingliederung, der gesundheitsbezogenen Arbeitsfähigkeit, der Lebensqualität sowie der Sozialen Unterstützung durch die Teilnahme am sozialarbeiterischen Gruppenprogramm erbracht werden. Die Return-To-Work-Rate betrug 43,7 %, ein Viertel der Untersuchungsgruppe befand sich nach einem Jahr in Arbeitslosigkeit. Die durchgeführte Gruppenintervention ist dem konventionellen Setting Sozialer Arbeit als gleichwertig anzusehen. Schlussfolgernd wurde auf eine sozialarbeiterische Unterstützung der beruflichen Wiedereingliederung über einen längeren Zeitraum nach einer kardiovaskulären Erkrankung verwiesen, insbesondere durch wohnortnahe Angebote zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt bei stabilerer Gesundheit. Aus den Erhebungen ließen sich mögliche Erfolge bei engerer Kooperation zwischen dem Fachbereich der Sozialen Arbeit und der Psychologie ableiten. Ebenfalls gab es Hinweise auf die einflussreiche Rolle der Angehörigen, die durch Einbindung in die Soziale Beratung unterstützend auf den Wiedereingliederungsprozess wirken könnten. Die Passgenauigkeit der untersuchten sozialarbeiterischen Gruppeninterventionen ist durch eine gezielte Soziale Diagnostik zu verbessern., The present investigation analyzed the direct correlation of a work-related group training by Social Work with the result of occupational reintegration of rehabilitation patients with specific work-related problems. It was supported as a research project by the Deutsche Rentenversicherung Bund from 01.01.2012 to 31.12.2015 and implemented at the professorship for rehabilitation sciences at the university of Potsdam. The research question was: Is it possible for an intensive group intervention program of Social Work within stationary medical rehabilitation to impact so significantly on the strengthening of social skills and social support of rehabilitation patients as to result in long-term improvements of occupational reintegration in comparison to the conventional treatment? The study is divided into a qualitative and a quantitative investigation including an intermediate intervention. Comprised were 352 patients at an age between 18 and 65 years with cardiovascular diseases which are frequently connected with complex problems and a poor socio-medical prognosis. The evaluation of the group intervention was based on a cluster-randomized controlled study design in order to provide empirical evidence about the extent to which the group intervention achieves higher effects than the regular treatment of Social Work. The intervention groups took part at the group intervention, the control groups received the regular treatment of Social Work. Ultimately, no evidence of an improvement of occupational reintegration, health-related work ability, quality of life and social support could be provided with that sample. The return-to-work rate was 43,7 %, a quarter of the investigation group was in unemployment after one year. The implemented group intervention may thus be considered equivalent to the conventional setting of Social Work. In conclusion, it was indicated to support the occupational reintegration by Social Work over a longer period after cardiovascular disease, especially by close-to-home offers at a later moment in time with more stable health. From this investigation we may derive possible successes for closer cooperation between the disciplines of Social Work and Psychology. Furthermore there were indications of the influential role of the relatives, who could support the process of reintegration by their involvement with the social counselling. The accuracy of fit concerning the investigated group intervention is to be improved through targeted social diagnosis.

In C3 plants, CO2 diffuses into the leaf and is assimilated by the Calvin-Benson cycle in the mesophyll cells. It leaves Rubisco open to its side reaction with O2, resulting in a wasteful cycle known as photorespiration. A sharp fall in atmospheric CO2 levels about 30 million years ago have further increased the side reaction with O2. The pressure to reduce photorespiration led, in over 60 plant genera, to the evolution of a CO2-concentrating mechanism called C4 photosynthesis; in this mode, CO2 is initially incorporated into 4-carbon organic acids, which diffuse to the bundle sheath and are decarboxylated to provide CO2 to Rubisco. Some genera, like Flaveria, contain several species that represent different steps in this complex evolutionary process. However, the majority of terrestrial plant species did not evolve a CO2-concentrating mechanism and perform C3 photosynthesis. This thesis compares photosynthetic metabolism in several species with C3, C4 and intermediate modes of photosynthesis. Metabolite profiling and stable isotope labelling were performed to detect inter-specific differences changes in metabolite profile and, hence, how a pathway operates. The results obtained were subjected to integrative data analyses like hierarchical clustering and principal component analysis, and were deepened by correlation analyses to uncover specific metabolic features and reaction steps that were conserved or differed between species. The main findings are that Calvin-Benson cycle metabolite profiles differ between C3 and C4 species and between different C3 species, including a very different response to rising irradiance in Arabidopsis and rice. These findings confirm Calvin-Benson cycle operation diverged between C3 and C4 species and, most unexpectedly, even between different C3 species. Moreover, primary metabolic profiles supported the current C4 evolutionary model in the genus Flaveria and also provided new insights and opened up new questions. Metabolite profiles also point toward a progressive adjustment of the Calvin-Benson cycle during the evolution of C4 photosynthesis. Die Ergebnisse wurden integrativen Datenanalysen wie hierarchischem Clustering und Hauptkomponentenanalyse unterzogen und durch Korrelationsanalysen vertieft, um spezifische metabolische Merkmale und Reaktionsschritte aufzudecken, die konserviert oder zwischen Spezies verschieden sind. Die wichtigsten Ergebnisse sind, dass sich die Metabolitenprofile des Calvin-Benson-Zyklus zwischen C3- und C4-Spezies und zwischen verschiedenen C3-Spezies unterscheiden, einschlie��lich einer sehr unterschiedlichen Reaktion auf steigende Strahlungsintensit��t bei Arabidopsis und Reis. Diese Ergebnisse best��tigen, dass der Calvin-Benson-Zyklus zwischen C3- und C4-Spezies und, h��chst unerwartet, sogar zwischen verschiedenen C3-Spezies divergiert. Background: The characteristics of osteoporosis are decreased bone mass and destruction towards the microarchitecture of bone tissue, which raises the risk of fracture. Psychosocialstress and osteoporosis are linked by sympathetic nervous system, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, and other endocrine factors. Psychosocial stress causes a series of effects on the organism, and this long-term depletion at the cellular level is considered to be mitochondrial allostatic load, including mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are involved in the mitochondrial allostatic load process and may as biomarkers in this setting. As critical participants during cell-to-cell communications, EVs serve as transport vehicles for nucleic acid and proteins, alter the phenotypic and functional characteristics of their target cells, and promote cell-to-cell contact. And hence, they play a significant role in the diagnosis and therapy of many diseases, such as osteoporosis. Aim: This narrative review attempts to outline the features of EVs, investigate their involvement in both psychosocial stress and osteoporosis, and analyze if EVs can be potential mediators between both. Methods: The online database from PubMed, Google Scholar, and Science Direct were searched for keywords related to the main topic of this study, and the availability of all the selected studies was verified. Afterward, the findings from the articles were summarized and synthesized. Results: Psychosocial stress affects bone remodeling through increased neurotransmitters such as glucocorticoids and catecholamines, as well as increased glucose metabolism. Furthermore, psychosocial stress leads to mitochondrial allostatic load, including oxidative stress, which may affect bone remodeling. In vitro and in vivo data suggest EVs might involve in the link between psychosocial stress and bone remodeling through the transfer of bioactive substances and thus be a potential mediator of psychosocial stress leading to osteoporosis. Conclusions: According to the included studies, psychosocial stress affects bone remodeling, leading to osteoporosis. By summarizing the specific properties of EVs and the function of EVs in both psychosocial stress and osteoporosis, respectively, it has been demonstrated that EVs are possible mediators of both, and have the prospects to be useful in innovative research areas. Psychosozialer Stress hat eine Reihe von Auswirkungen auf den Organismus, und diese langfristige Erschöpfung auf zellulärer Ebene wird als mitochondriale allostatische Belastung angesehen, die eine mitochondriale Dysfunktion und oxidativen Stress beinhaltet. Extrazelluläre Vesikel (EVs) sind in den mitochondrialen allostatischen Belastungsprozess involviert und können in diesem Zusammenhang als Biomarker dienen. Als kritische Teilnehmer der Zell-zu-Zell-Kommunikation dienen EVs als Transportmittel für Nukleinsäuren und Proteine, verändern die phänotypischen und funktionellen Eigenschaften ihrer Zielzellen und fördern den Zell-zu-Zell-Kontakt. Daher spielen sie eine wichtige Rolle bei der Diagnose und Therapie vieler Krankheiten, wie z. B. Osteoporose. Ziel: Diese Übersichtsarbeit soll die Eigenschaften von EVs und ihre Rolle in Hinblick auf den Zusammenhang zwischen psychosozialen Stress und Osteoporose zusammenfassen. Weiterhin wird untersucht, ob EVs in dem Zusammenhang eine potenzielle Mediatorenrolle zukommt. Methoden Die Online-Datenbanken PubMed, Google Scholar und Science Direct wurden anhand thematischer Stichwörter durchsucht und die Verfügbarkeit aller ausgewählten Studien überprüft. Anschließend wurden die Ergebnisse der Artikel zusammengefasst und miteinander in Verbindung setzen. Ergebnisse: Psychosozialer Stress führt zu einer Erhöhung der Transmitterkonzentrate wie Glukokortikoide und Katecholamine sowie einen erhöhten Glukosestoffwechsel, was jeweils Einfluss auf den Knochenumbau haben kann. Darüber hinaus führt psychosozialer Stress zu mitochondrialer allostatischer Last, einschließlich oxidativem Stress, was sich ebenfalls auf den Knochenumbau auswirken kann. Sowohl in vitro- als auch in vivo-Daten deuten darauf hin, dass EVs hierbei durch ihre Übertragung von bioaktiven Messengern eine relevante Mediatorenrolle einnehmen. Es ist anzunehmen, dass sie potenzielle Vermittler des Zusammenhangs von psychosozialem Stress und osteoporotischen Veränderungen sein können. Schlussfolgerung: Entlang der eingeschlossenen Studien besteht ein Zusammenhang zwischen psychosozialem Stress, dem Knochenumbau und damit der Entstehung von Osteoporose. In der Genese des negativen Einflusses auf die Knochengesundheit scheint EVs durch ihre Aktivität als Messenger-Transporter eine relevante Mediatorenrolle zuzukommen. Dieses Wissen hat das Potenzial für zukünftige innovative Forschungskonzepte.

Kinder, die mit Variationen der Geschlechtsmerkmale zur Welt kommen, werden in den ersten Lebensjahren häufig geschlechtsverändernden medizinischen Eingriffen unterzogen. Dabei wird die stellvertretende Einwilligung der Eltern als zulässig erachtet, um den medizinischen Eingriff zu legitimieren. Diese Maßnahmen stehen jedoch zunehmend in der Kritik und werden als Verstoß gegen die Selbstbestimmung von Kindern und Jugendlichen sowie als Verletzung wesentlicher Grund- und Menschenrechte gewertet. Obwohl sich aktuelle Empfehlungen und Leitlinien zunehmend an den Rechten und dem Wohl von intergeschlechtlichen Minderjährigen orientieren, ist die Anzahl der geschlechtsverändernden Eingriffe in den letzten Jahren dennoch relativ konstant geblieben. Hieraus ergibt sich ein aktueller Handlungsbedarf. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird an den Rechten von intergeschlechtlichen Minderjährigen angeknüpft. Dabei liegt der Fokus auf den Selbstbestimmungsrechten von intergeschlechtlichen Kindern und Jugendlichen. In der Literatur ist umstritten, inwiefern Minderjährigen eigene Selbstbestimmungsrechte zustehen und sie diese selbst ausüben können. Im Rahmen der Masterarbeit wird daher zunächst erarbeitet, in welchem Verhältnis Elternrechte und Selbstbestimmungsrechte von intergeschlechtlichen Minderjährigen im aktuellen Familienrecht stehen. Daraus wird abgeleitet, welche Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der Selbstbestimmung und Stellvertretung bei geschlechtsverändernden medizinischen Eingriffen bestehen. Hierbei zeigt sich, dass gerade nicht medizinisch indizierte Eingriffe, die auf eine „Angleichung“ des Geschlechts an bestehende Geschlechternormen ausgerichtet sind, gegen das Kindeswohl sowie Grundrechte verstoßen und Minderjährigen wesentliche Möglichkeiten für eine selbstbestimmte Lebensführung nehmen. Wirksame familienrechtliche Schutzmöglichkeiten bestehen jedoch nicht. Als Perspektive wird daher ein Gesetzesentwurf des Deutschen Instituts für Menschenrechte auf seinen Schutzgehalt für intergeschlechtliche Minderjährige untersucht. Neben wenigen Kritikpunkten zeigt sich, dass das „Geschlechtervielfaltsgesetz“ zum Schutz und zur Selbstbestimmung intergeschlechtlicher Minderjähriger beitragen könnte. Ergänzend zu einer gesetzlichen Klarstellung, ist jedoch auch Beratung und Unterstützung für intergeschlechtliche Kinder, Jugendliche und ihre Eltern erforderlich. Aus diesem Grund werden Möglichkeiten der Sozialen Arbeit zur Förderung geschlechtlicher Vielfalt entwickelt und Beratungs- und Unterstützungsansätze dargestellt. Insgesamt zeigt sich jedoch, dass auch ein gesellschaftliches Umdenken notwendig ist, um intergeschlechtlichen Menschen Selbstbestimmung über ihren Körper und die eigene geschlechtliche Identität zu ermöglichen.

Die vorliegende Masterarbeit beschäftigt sich mit Strategien der außerstrafrechtlichen Konfliktbear- beitung in linksautonomen Räumen. Ausgehend von der Annahme, dass staatliche Strafe ein Instrument der Herrschaftsausübung darstellt und in Zeiten des Neoliberalismus die prekär gewordenen Grenzen der gesellschaftlichen Zugehörigkeit durch Kriminalisierung aufrechterhalten werden, sollen Alternativen zum hegemonialen Strafrechtssystem aufgezeigt werden. Das qualitative Forschungsdesign wurde unter Berücksichti-gung der Grundannahmen der Kritischen Kriminologie entwickelt. Durch den Konfliktbegriff wird sich von der Kategorie „Kriminalität“ mit den ihr inhärenten Zuschreibungen gelöst. Der Forschungsprozess basiert auf der Grounded Theory Methodologie. Auf der Grundlage teilnarrativer Interviews mit Aktivist*innen aus verschiedenen linksautonomen Räumen in Deutschland wird ein Modell entwickelt, welches den Prozess der selbstbestimmten Bearbeitung von konflikthaften Ereignissen im gewählten Forschungsfeld beschreibt. Dieses zeigt auf, dass eine Aneignung von Konflikten verstärkt durch einen hohen Grad der Verantwortungsübernahme stattfindet. In einem zirkulären Prozess werden hierbei in der Bearbeitung von Konflikten eigene Regeln und Werte entwickelt, welche sich wiederum auf den Umgang mit Konflikten auswirken. Die Ergebnisse der Forschung richten sich primär an Personen, welche in links-autonomen Räumen aktiv sind und dienen einem besseren Verständnis ihrer gelebten Praxis. Durch die kritische Reflexion, unter Berücksichtigung der Grundsätze von Transformative Justice und Community Accountability, werden zudem Perspektiven für eine mögliche Weiterentwicklung linksautonomer Ansätze zum Umgang mit Konflikten aufgezeigt.

Ausgangspunkt dieser Untersuchung ist die Analyse des Wissenstransfers von der Wissenschaft in die Praxis der Sozialen Arbeit am Beispiel des Netzwerkbegriffs. Durch die Analyse des Verständnisses von Netzwerken sowie der Nutzung von Netzwerkmetaphern soll der Wissenstransfer nachgezeichnet werden. Die Analyse schließt an den Diskurs der Verwendungsforschung an und versteht Wissenstransfer systemtheoretisch als strukturelle Kopplung zwischen den gesellschaftlichen Funktionssystemen der Sozialen Arbeit und der Wissenschaft. Wissenstransfer ist demnach die Irritation des Hilfesystems durch das Wissenschaftssystem, um Veränderungsprozesse zu initiieren. Dazu wird der wissenschaftliche Diskurs in Hand- und Wörterbüchern zum Thema Netzwerke analysiert und Ergebnissen aus leitfadengestützten Interviews in den Bereichen der Jugendhilfe und Gemeinwesenarbeit gegenübergestellt. Neben der Verwendung des Netzwerkbegriffes werden Netzwerkmetaphern in Wissenschaft und Praxis der Sozialen Arbeit untersucht. Es wird davon ausgegangen, dass Wissenstransfer sich auch in Metaphern manifestiert und Metaphern als Indikator für den Wissenstransfer dienen können. Im Ergebnis zeigt sich, dass sich die Verwendung des Netzwerkbegriffs in Wissenschaft und Praxis deutlich unterscheidet. Während in der Wissenschaft ein breites Spektrum von unterschiedlichen theoretischen Ansätzen und Begründungszusammenhängen zur Erklärung der Wirkungsweisen von Netzwerken vorliegt, zeigt sich in der Praxis der Sozialen Arbeit eine rudimentäre Rezeption dieser Erkenntnisse.

Even though the majority of individuals know that exercising is healthy, a high percentage struggle to achieve the recommended amount of exercise. The (social-cognitive) theories that are commonly applied to explain exercise motivation refer to the assumption that people base their decisions mainly on rational reasoning. However, behavior is not only bound to reflection. In recent years, the role of automaticity and affect for exercise motivation has been increasingly discussed. In this dissertation, central assumptions of the affective–reflective theory of physical inactivity and exercise (ART; Brand & Ekkekakis, 2018), an exercise-specific dual-process theory that emphasizes the role of a momentary automatic affective reaction for exercise-decisions, were examined. The central aim of this dissertation was to investigate exercisers and non-exercisers automatic affective reactions to exercise-related stimuli (i.e., type-1 process). In particular, the two components of the ART’s type-1 process, that are, automatic associations with exercise and the automatic affective valuation to exercise, were under study. In the first publication (Schinkoeth & Antoniewicz, 2017), research on automatic (evaluative) associations with exercise was summarized and evaluated in a systematic review. The results indicated that automatic associations with exercise appeared to be relevant predictors for exercise behavior and other exercise-related variables, providing evidence for a central assumption of the ART’s type-1 process. Furthermore, indirect methods seem to be suitable to assess automatic associations. The aim of the second publication (Schinkoeth, Weymar, & Brand, 2019) was to approach the somato-affective core of the automatic valuation of exercise using analysis of reactivity in vagal HRV while viewing exercise-related pictures. Results revealed that differences in exercise volume could be regressed on HRV reactivity. In light of the ART, these findings were interpreted as evidence of an inter-individual affective reaction elicited at the thought of exercise and triggered by exercise-stimuli. In the third publication (Schinkoeth & Brand, 2019, subm.), it was sought to disentangle and relate to each other the ART’s type-1 process components—automatic associations and the affective valuation of exercise. Automatic associations to exercise were assessed with a recoding-free variant of an implicit association test (IAT). Analysis of HRV reactivity was applied to approach a somatic component of the affective valuation, and facial reactions in a facial expression (FE) task served as indicators of the automatic affective reaction’s valence. Exercise behavior was assessed via self-report. The measurement of the affective valuation’s valence with the FE task did not work well in this study. HRV reactivity was predicted by the IAT score and did also statistically predict exercise behavior. These results thus confirm and expand upon the results of publication two and provide empirical evidence for the type-1 process, as defined in the ART. This dissertation advances the field of exercise psychology concerning the influence of automaticity and affect on exercise motivation. Moreover, both methodical implications and theoretical extensions for the ART can be derived from the results. Obwohl die meisten Menschen wissen, dass Sport gesund ist, hat ein hoher Prozentsatz Mühe, die empfohlenen Bewegungsumfänge zu erreichen. Sozial-kognitive Theorien, die üblicherweise zur Erklärung von Sportmotivation angewendet werden, stützen sich auf die Annahme, dass Menschen ihre Entscheidungen hauptsächlich auf Grund rationaler Überlegungen treffen. Unser Verhalten ist jedoch nicht immer rational. In den letzten Jahren ist die Rolle von Automatizität und Affekt für die Sportmotivation daher zunehmend diskutiert worden. In dieser Dissertation wurden zentrale Annahmen der affective–reflective theory zur Erklärung von körperlicher Inaktivität und Sporttreiben (ART; Brand & Ekkekakis, 2018), einer sportspezifischen Zwei-Prozesstheorie, die die Rolle einer momentanen automatischen affektiven Reaktion für Sportentscheidungen betont, überprüft. Das zentrale Ziel dieser Dissertation war die Untersuchung automatisch affektiver Reaktionen von Sportlern und Nicht-Sportlern auf sportbezogene Stimuli (i.e., Typ-1-Prozess). Insbesondere wurden die beiden in der ART beschrieben Komponenten dieser automatisch affektiven Reaktion, d.h. die automatischen Assoziationen zu Sport und die automatische affektive Valuation von Sport, untersucht. In der ersten Publikation (Schinkoeth & Antoniewicz, 2017) wurde die Forschung zu automatischen Assoziationen zu Sport in einem systematischen Review zusammengefasst und evaluiert. Die Ergebnisse deuteten darauf hin, dass automatische Assoziationen relevante Prädiktoren für das Sportverhalten und andere sportbezogene Variablen zu sein scheinen, was den Beweis für eine zentrale Annahme des Typ-1-Prozesses der ART lieferte. Darüber hinaus scheinen indirekte Methoden geeignet zu sein um automatische Assoziationen zu messen. Das Ziel der zweiten Publikation (Schinkoeth, Weymar, & Brand, 2019) war es, sich dem somato-affektiven Kern der automatischen Valuation von Sport mittels Analyse der Reaktivität der vagalen HRV bei Betrachtung von Sportbildern zu nähern. Die Ergebnisse zeigten, dass die HRV-Reaktivität Unterschiede im Sportumfang hervorsagen konnte. Im Licht der ART wurden diese Befunde als Hinweis auf eine interindividuelle affektive Reaktion interpretiert, die beim bloßen Gedanken an Sport hervorgerufen und durch die Sportbilder ausgelöst wurde. In der dritten Publikation (Schinkoeth & Brand, 2019, subm.) wurde versucht, die Typ-1-Prozesskomponenten der ART - automatische Assoziationen und die affektive Valuation von Sport - zu trennen und in Beziehung zueinander zu setzen. Automatische Assoziationen zu Sport wurden mit einer rekodierungsfreien Variante eines impliziten Assoziationstests (IAT) gemessen. Die Analyse der HRV-Reaktivität wurde genutzt, um sich einer somatischen Komponente der affektiven Valuation zu nähern, und Gesichtsreaktionen in einer Mimikaufgabe (GR) dienten als Indikatoren für die Valenz der automatischen affektiven Reaktion. Das Bewegungsverhalten wurde mittels Selbstbericht bewertet. Die Messung der Valenz der affektiven Valuation mit der GR-Aufgabe funktionierte in dieser Studie nicht. Es konnte aber gezeigt werden, dass die HRV-Reaktivität durch den IAT-Score hervorgesagt werden konnte und wiederum das selbstberichtete Sportverhalten statistisch vorhersagen konnte. Diese Ergebnisse bestätigen und erweitern somit die Ergebnisse der Publikation zwei und liefern empirische Evidenz für den Typ-1-Prozess, wie er in der ART definiert ist. Die Ergbenisse dieser Dissertation tragen dazu bei die Forschung Rund um den Einfluss von Automatizität und Affekt auf die Sportmotivation entscheidend voran zu treiben. Darüber hinaus lassen sich aus den Ergebnissen sowohl methodische Implikationen als auch theoretische Erweiterungen für die ART ableiten.

Im Blickpunkt stehen ältere Menschen, die in ihrer privaten Lebensführung zurückgezogen leben, wenig in lokale Beziehungsnetzwerke involviert sind und die von Informationen und Angeboten der Altenhilfeträger bisher nicht erreicht werden. Für diese Menschen wurde die Idee einer „kommunikativen Informationsinfrastruktur“ im Sozialraum des Wohnviertels und Stadtteils entwickelt. Mit dem Infrastrukturmodell soll vermieden werden, dass solche Personen unerkannt in Notsituationen geraten, aber auch sichergestellt werden, dass sie kontinuierlich über Gelegenheiten zur erfolgreichen Bewältigung ihrer Lebenssituation informiert werden. Das Buch beschreibt das entwickelte Modell und die Erfahrungen mit der praktischen Umsetzung. Das Modell zeigt Perspektiven für die Sozialplanung auf, dass zwischen privater Lebensführung im Alter und öffentlicher Daseinsvorsorge der Altenhilfe wirkungsvoll vermittelt werden kann. Zurückgezogen lebende ältere Menschen werden aus dem lokalen Umfeld unterstützt, sich umfassend zu informieren und Chancen zur Mitgestaltung von Angeboten gemäß ihren Bedürfnissen wahrzunehmen.

Einleitung Die Implantation einer Knie- oder Hüft-Totalendoprothese (TEP) ist eine der häufigsten operativen Eingriffe. Im Anschluss an die Operation und die postoperative Rehabilitation stellt die Bewegungstherapie einen wesentlichen Bestandteil der Behandlung zur Verbesserung der Gelenkfunktion und der Lebensqualität dar. In strukturschwachen Gebieten werden entsprechende Angebote nur in unzureichender Dichte vorgehalten. Zudem zeichnet sich ein flächendeckender Fachkräftemangel im Bereich der Physiotherapie ab. Die Tele-Nachsorge bietet daher einen innovativen Ansatz für die postrehabilitative Versorgung der Patienten. Das Ziel der vorliegenden Untersuchung war die Überprüfung der Wirksamkeit einer interaktiven Tele-Nachsorgeintervention für Patienten mit Knie- oder Hüft-TEP im Vergleich zur herkömmlichen Versorgung (usual care). Dazu wurden die Funktionalität und die berufliche Wiedereingliederung untersucht. Methode Zwischen August 2016 und August 2017 wurden 111 Patienten (54,9 ± 6,8 Jahre, 54,3 % weiblich) zu Beginn ihrer stationären Anschlussheilbehandlung nach Implantation einer Knie- oder Hüft-TEP in diese randomisiert, kontrolliert, multizentrische Studie eingeschlossen. Nach Entlassung aus der orthopädischen Anschlussrehabilitation (Baseline) führte die Interventionsgruppe (IG) ein dreimonatiges interaktives Training über ein Telerehabilitationssystem durch. Hierfür erstellte ein betreuender Physiotherapeut einen individuellen Trainingsplan aus 38 Übungen zur Verbesserung der Kraft sowie der posturalen Kontrolle. Zur Anpassung des Trainingsplans übermittelte das System dem Physiotherapeuten Daten zur Quantität sowie zur Qualität des Trainings. Die Kontrollgruppe (KG) konnte die herkömmlichen Versorgungsangebote nutzen. Zur Beurteilung der Wirksamkeit der Intervention wurde die Differenz der Verbesserung im 6MWT zwischen der IG und der KG nach drei Monaten als primärer Endpunkt definiert. Als sekundäre Endpunkte wurden die Return-to-Work-Rate sowie die funktionelle Mobilität mittels des Stair Ascend Tests, des Five-Times-Sit-to-Stand Test und des Timed Up and Go Tests untersucht. Weiterhin wurden die gesundheitsbezogene Lebensqualität mit dem Short-Form 36 (SF-36) und die gelenkbezogenen Einschränkungen mit dem Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) evaluiert. Der primäre und die sekundären Endpunkte wurden anhand von baseline-adjustierten Kovarianzanalysen im intention-to-treat-Ansatz ausgewertet. Zusätzlich wurde die Teilnahme an Nachsorgeangeboten und die Adhärenz der Interventionsgruppe an der Tele-Nachsorge erfasst und evaluiert. Ergebnisse Zum Ende der Intervention wiesen beide Gruppen einen statistisch signifikanten Anstieg ihrer 6MWT Strecke auf (p < 0,001). Zu diesem Zeitpunkt legten die Teilnehmer der IG im Mittel 530,8 ± 79,7 m, die der KG 514,2 ± 71,2 m zurück. Dabei betrug die Differenz der Verbesserung der Gehstrecke in der IG 88,3 ± 57,7 m und in der KG 79,6 ± 48,7 m. Damit zeigt der primäre Endpunkt keine signifikanten Gruppenunterschiede (p = 0,951). Bezüglich der beruflichen Wiedereingliederung konnte jedoch eine signifikant höhere Rate in der IG (64,6 % versus 46,2 %; p = 0,014) festgestellt werden. Für die sekundären Endpunkte der funktionellen Mobilität, der Lebensqualität und der gelenkbezogenen Beschwerden belegen die Ergebnisse eine Gleichwertigkeit beider Gruppen zum Ende der Intervention. Schlussfolgerung Die telemedizinisch assistierte Bewegungstherapie für Knie- oder Hüft-TEP Patienten ist der herkömmlichen Versorgung zur Nachsorge hinsichtlich der erzielten Verbesserungen der funktionellen Mobilität, der gesundheitsbezogenen Lebensqualität und der gelenkbezogenen Beschwerden gleichwertig. In dieser Patientenpopulation ließen sich klinisch relevante Verbesserungen unabhängig von der Form der Bewegungstherapie erzielen. Im Hinblick auf die berufliche Wiedereingliederung zeigte sich eine signifikant höhere Rate in der Interventionsgruppe. Die telemedizinisch assistierte Bewegungstherapie scheint eine geeignete Versorgungsform der Nachsorge zu sein, die orts- und zeitunabhängig durchgeführt werden kann und somit den Bedürfnissen berufstätiger Patienten entgegenkommt und in den Alltag der Patienten integriert werden kann. Die Tele-Nachsorge sollte daher als optionale und komplementäre Form der postrehabilitativen Nachsorge angeboten werden. Auch im Hinblick auf den zunehmenden Fachkräftemangel im Bereich der Physiotherapie und bestehende Versorgungslücken in strukturschwachen Gebieten kann der Einsatz der Tele-Nachsorge innovative und bedarfsgerechte Lösungsansätze bieten., Background Total hip or knee replacement is one of the most frequent surgical procedures. Physical rehabilitation following total hip or knee replacement and the subsequent rehabilitation is an essential part of the therapy to improve functional outcomes and quality of life. After discharge of inpatient rehabilitation, a subsequent post-rehabilitation exercise therapy is needed to maintain functional mobility. Telerehabilitation may be a potential innovative treatment approach. The study aimed to investigate the superiority of an interactive telerehabilitation intervention for patients after total hip or knee replacement in comparison to usual care regarding physical performance, functional mobility, quality of life and joint-related impairment. Methods This is an open, randomized, controlled, multicenter study with two prospective arms. 111 eligible and consenting participants with total knee or hip replacement were recruited at admission to subsequent inpatient rehabilitation. After comprehensive three-week inpatient rehabilitation, the intervention group performed a three-month interactive home-based exercise training with a telerehabilitation system. For this purpose, a physiotherapist created an individual training plan composed of 38 different strength and balance exercises, which were implemented in the system. Data about quality and frequency of training were transmitted to the physiotherapist for further adjustment. Communication between patient and physiotherapist was possible using the system. The control group received voluntary usual aftercare programs. Baseline assessments were investigated after discharge from rehabilitation, final assessments three months later. The primary outcome was the difference in improvement between intervention and control group in 6-minute walk distance after three months. Secondary outcomes included differences in Stair Ascend Test, Five-Times-Sit-to-Stand Test, Timed Up and Go Test to assess mobility and the SF 36 as well as the WOMAC Index to assess quality of life and joint-related impairment. Furthermore, the adherence for aftercare programs and the interactive home-based exercise program were evaluated. Results At the end of intervention both groups revealed a statistically significant increase in their 6-minute walk distance (p < 0,001). At that time participants of the intervention group had an absolute 6-minute walk distance of 530,8 ± 79,7 m and the control group had a distance of 514,2 ± 71,2 m. The difference in improvement for the primary outcome for the intervention group was 88,3 ± 57,7 m and 79,6 ± 48,7 for the control group. No statistically significant difference was demonstrated (p = 0,951). However, regarding the return to work rate, there was a significantly higher rate in the intervention group (64,6 % versus 46,2 %; p = 0,05). The secondary endpoints for functional mobility, quality of life and joint-related complaints demonstrated no significant difference between groups at the end of intervention. Adherence was above 75 % for the first seven weeks. Discussion The results show that the interactive home-based exercise training is equal to usual care regarding the functional mobility, the quality of life and joint-related impairments. In this population clinically, significant improvements were shown independently from the form of exercise therapy. Whereas the return to work rate turned out to be significantly increased for the intervention group. The interactive home-based exercise training seems to be an appropriate form of healthcare provision that does not depend on specific locations or appointment allocations and seems to be suitable and feasible for employed persons. Therefore, this interactive home-based aftercare program should be offered as an optional health care service that can consider patients’ individual needs. Regarding an increasing shortage in physiotherapists and an additional supply gap in rural areas, the implementation of telerehabilitation may offer an innovative and needs-oriented approach.

States across the country are developing systems for evaluating school principals on the basis of student achievement growth. A common approach is to hold principals accountable for the value added of their schools—that is, schools’ contributions to student achievement growth. In theory, school value added can reflect not only principals’ effectiveness but also other school-specific influences on student achievement growth that are outside of principals’ control. In this paper, we isolate principals’ effects on student achievement growth and examine the extent to which school value added captures the effects that principals persistently demonstrate. Using longitudinal data on the math and reading outcomes of fourth- through eighth-grade students in Pennsylvania, our findings indicate that school value added provides very poor information for revealing principals’ persistent levels of effectiveness.

Skeptics of the KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program) charter school network argue that these schools rely on selective admission, attrition, and replacement of students to produce positive achievement results. We investigate this using data covering 19 KIPP middle schools. On average, KIPP schools admit students disadvantaged in ways similar to other local students, and attrition patterns are typically no different at KIPP than at nearby schools. Unlike district schools, however, KIPP schools tend to replace students who exit with higher achieving students, and fewer students are replaced in the later years of middle school. Overall, KIPP’s positive achievement impacts do not appear to be explained by advantages in the prior achievement of KIPP students, even when attrition and replacement patterns are taken into account.

BACKGROUND: State vocational rehabilitation (VR) agencies are uniquely positioned to help youth with disabilities bridge the gaps in their transition to adulthood. OBJECTIVE: This study explores the variation in VR agency practices with youth with disabilities using a case study approach for a select group of eight agencies – five of which had statistics for their youth applicants that indicated relatively higher transition outcomes compared to all agencies and three of which that did not. METHODS: We conducted an in-depth examination of five areas of VR agency practices: organization and collaboration strategies; outreach, application, and eligibility; service delivery; employment; and monitoring and evaluation. RESULTS: The eight agencies had many similarities in how they identified youth with disabilities and provided services to them, such as having staff dedicated to serving youth and having programs targeting youth, often in conjunction with one or more community partners. We also observed many differentiating features among agencies with high or low transition outcomes, some aspects less under an agency’s control (such as being involved in local or statewide stakeholder collaborations) and other aspects within an agency’s control (such as having state leadership with exclusive transition responsibilities and developing outreach to parents). Additional features, although within an agency’s control, represent a greater resource cost; these include developing intensive school-based programs, enrolling more youth at earlier ages, and implementing programs to connect youth to postsecondary schools. CONCLUSIONS: Information on varying characteristics among VR agencies could help Rehabilitation Services Administration and VR agency administrators identify promising practices in serving transition-age youth with disabilities.

Most teacher layoffs during the Great Recession were implemented following inverse-seniority policies. In this paper, I examine the implementation of a discretionary layoff policy in Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. Administrators did not uniformly lay off the most or least senior teachers but instead selected teachers who were previously retired, late-hired, unlicensed, low-performing, or nontenured. Using quasi-experimental variation within schools across grades, I then estimate the differential effects of teacher layoffs on student achievement based on teacher seniority and effectiveness. Mathematics achievement in grades that lost an effective teacher, as measured by principal evaluations or value-added scores, decreased 0.05 to 0.11 standard deviations more than in grades that lost an ineffective teacher. In contrast, teacher seniority has limited predictive power on the effects of layoffs. Simulation analyses show that the district selected teachers who were, on average, less effective than those teachers identified under an inverse-seniority policy, and also reduced job losses.

The welfare costs of inflation and inflation uncertainty are well documented in the literature and empirical evidence on the link between the two is sparse in the case of Egypt. This paper investigates the causal relationship between inflation and inflation uncertainty in Egypt using monthly time series data during the period January 1974 - April 2015. To endogenously control for any potential structural breaks in the inflation time series, Zivot and Andrews (2002) and Clemente-Montanes-Reyes (1998) unit root tests are used. The inflation-inflation uncertainty relation is modeled by the standard two-step approach as well as simultaneously using various versions of the GARCH-M model to control for any potential feedback effects. The analyses explicitly control for the effect of the Economic Reform and Structural Adjustment Program (ERSAP) undertaken by the Egyptian government in the early 1990s, which affected inflation rate and its associated volatility. Results show a high degree of inflation-volatility persistence in the response to inflationary shocks. Granger-causality test along with symmetric and asymmetric GARCH-M models indicate a statistically significant bi-directional positive relationship between inflation and inflation uncertainty, supporting both the Friedman-Ball and the Cukierman-Meltzer hypotheses. The findings are robust to the various estimation methods and model specifications. The findings of this paper support the view of adopting inflation-targeting policy in Egypt, after fulfilling its preconditions, to reduce the welfare cost of inflation and its related uncertainties. Monetary authorities in Egypt should enhance the credibility of monetary policy and attempt to reduce inflation uncertainty, which will help lower inflation rates.

In this paper, we study the cultural geography of the Veneto Region on the basis of a pseudo-diffusion approach to the analysis of the inherent semantic spatial data. We find somewhat surprising results, and, in particular, that Venice, indisputably the Region’s cultural hub in terms of concentration of activities and facilities, global visibility and attraction of resources, plays a marginal role in determining the momentum of cultural initiative at the regional level as of 2007 data. The areas with the greater momentum are relatively marginal ones but characterized by a strong presence of design-oriented companies that are actively engaging in culture-driven innovation in a context of gradually horizontally-integrated clusters. Our findings call for a revision of the traditional policy approaches that identify centralities in terms of concentration of activities and facilities based on past dynamics, and to design policies accordingly. We argue in favour of a more forward-looking, evidence-based approach.

We followed a sample of working-age Social Security Disability Insurance (DI) program beneficiaries for 5 years after their first benefit award to learn how certain factors are associated with achievement of four return-to-work milestones: enrollment for employment services provided by a state vocational rehabilitation agency or employment network, start of a trial work period (TWP), completion of TWP, and suspension or termination of benefits because of work. We found that younger beneficiaries are more likely than are older beneficiaries to achieve the milestones and that there exists substantial variation across impairment types. In addition, the probability of achieving the milestones is higher for individuals with more years of education, for Blacks, and for individuals residing in states with low unemployment rates at the time of award. It is lower for beneficiaries with a high DI benefit amount at award, an award decision made at a higher adjudicative level, and/or Supplemental Security Income or Medicare benefits at the time of DI award. We also found large variation in the relationships of both state of residence and award month to these return-to-work outcomes. We attribute these variations to unobserved factors at the state-level, policy changes, and trends in unobserved beneficiary characteristics.

We compare teacher preparation programs in Missouri based on the effectiveness of their graduates in the classroom. The differences in effectiveness between teachers from different preparation programs are very small. In fact, virtually all of the variation in teacher effectiveness comes from within-program differences between teachers. Prior research has overstated differences in teacher performance across preparation programs for several reasons, most notably because some sampling variability in the data has been incorrectly attributed to the preparation programs.

There is a growing engagement in a better understanding of the relation between “Life and Medicine”, medical schools becoming more innovative, by combining art and medicine, while marketing is challenged to spread the healing further by focusing on customer’s needs and helping them. The following case is a documentation of effects by art therapy stabilizing the subjective life-quality of the today’s healthcare “customer”, the patient, while proving a better understanding, compassion and empathy in the interaction.

We examine behavioral responses to an incentive program that offers high-performing teachers in ten school districts across the country $20,000 to transfer into the district's hardest-to-staff schools. We discuss behavioral responses to the program on high-performing teachers’ willingness to transfer (supply) and the effect of the transfer offer on the internal dynamics of the receiving schools (demand). We found low take-up rates among the 1,514 high-performing teachers who were offered the incentive, with minimal sorting on observable characteristics. Within the new schools, transfer teachers were less likely than their counterparts in a randomized control group to require mentoring and more likely to provide mentoring themselves. No significant differences occurred in school climate, collegiality, or the way in which students were assigned to teachers, but evidence indicates that principals may have strategically assigned existing teachers to grades in both treatment and control schools in response to the quality of the incoming teachers.

Chicago Public Schools initiated the Excellence in Teaching Project, a teacher evaluation program designed to increase student learning by improving classroom instruction through structured principal–teacher dialogue. The pilot began in forty-four elementary schools in 2008–09 (cohort 1) and scaled up to include an additional forty-eight elementary schools in 2009–10 (cohort 2). Leveraging the experimental design of the rollout, cohort 1 schools performed better in reading and math than cohort 2 schools at the end of the first year, though the math effects are not statistically significant. We find the initial improvement for cohort 1 schools remains even after cohort 2 schools adopted the program. Moreover, the pilot differentially impacted schools with different characteristics. Higher-achieving and lower-poverty schools were the primary beneficiaries, suggesting the intervention was most successful in more advantaged schools. These findings are relevant for policy makers and school leaders who are implementing evaluation systems that incorporate classroom observations.

Few studies on federalism analyze the role of courts as safeguards of the federal arrangement, and those that do tend to be too optimistic about what courts can do. This article analyzes the effect of judicial review on the interaction between the central and a regional government in a federation in order to understand the conditions under which courts may or may not enforce compliance with federalism. It argues that politicians of either level of government anticipate the likelihood of a judicial challenge and an eventual veto, and it finds distinct equilibria in the interaction between central and regional governments (imposition, auto-limitation, negotiation and litigation). Only under auto-limitation do courts effectively prevent transgressions to the federal arrangement. In all other scenarios, defection may take place despite the presence of courts. These findings show that as the court’s jurisprudence becomes more solid and defined, the chances for governments to successfully exceed their powers increase. Not only do transgressions take place despite the presence of the court, but because of it.

Steigende Unsicherheitswahrnehmungen im höheren Alter korrespondieren kaum mit der objektiven Kriminalitätsrate oder dem Risiko, Opfer einer Straftat zu werden. Vielmehr beeinflussen das Gefühl der eigenen Verletzbarkeit, die Wahrnehmungen im Wohnquartier und die Beziehungen zur Nachbarschaft das subjektive Sicherheitsempfinden Älterer in besonderem Maße. Für die Soziale Arbeit eröffnet sich damit ein neues Themenfeld, denn das individuelle Sicherheitsempfinden wirkt sich unweigerlich auf die eigene Lebensqualität und auf die Teilhabechancen im Alter aus. Fachkräfte der Sozialen Arbeit können dabei kriminalpräventive und fachliche Methoden kombinieren, um sozialraumorientierte und zielgruppenadäquate Maßnahmen zur Verbesserung der Sicherheitslage älterer Menschen in die Praxis zu integrieren. Dieses Praxishandbuch verbindet kriminologisches Grundlagenwissen zur objektiven und subjektiven Sicherheit älterer Menschen mit praxisorientierten Handlungsansätzen der Sozialen Arbeit. Es richtet sich an Fachkräfte der Sozialen Arbeit, Multiplikatorinnen und Multiplikatoren im Gemeinwesen sowie Akteure der Kriminalprävention.

This paper aims to better understand the relationship between HIV knowledge and media exposure in India. We use a two-stage hurdle model to estimate the effect of media sources such as newspapers, radios and television on AIDS-related knowledge among Indian men and women using demographic health survey data. Overall, access to newspapers, radio, or television increases the likelihood of better HIV knowledge in both males and females by an order between 2% and 12%. These findings, albeit quantitatively small, suggest, even if indirectly, possible problems faced by AIDS campaigns and government programs in combating the HIV epidemic in India.

The effects of Internet education on economic growth are examined using a cross-section of 36 high-income countries. Internet usage rates are employed as a proxy for Internet education across countries. Regression results show that the frequent usage of the Internet has a positive and significant effect on economic growth. The estimated growth effect of Internet skills is also found to be greater than the growth effect of math and science skills. The results are, in general, robust across model specifications.

This study surveys and evaluates previous attempts to use game theory to explain the strategic dynamic of the Cuban missile crisis, including, but not limited to, explanations developed in the style of Thomas Schelling, Nigel Howard and Steven Brams. All of the explanations were judged to be either incomplete or deficient in some way. Schelling’s explanation is both empirically and theoretically inconsistent with the consensus interpretation of the crisis; Howard’s with the contemporary understanding of rational strategic behavior; and Brams’ with the full sweep of the events that define the crisis. The broad outlines of a more general explanation that addresses all of the foundational questions associated with the crisis within the confines of a single, integrated, game-theoretic model with incomplete information are laid out. In the academic and policy debates over the merits of charter schools, two things are clear: First, they are here to stay and, second, their quality varies widely. Policy makers therefore need to understand how to design charter laws that promote the creation of high-performing schools. Crucial to this discussion is the charter authorizing process, which varies across the nation. In some states, authorizing power is held exclusively by local school districts, whereas other states allow a range of authorizers that may include not only local districts, but also nonprofit organizations, counties, higher educational institutions, or a state agency. In this paper we use individual student-level data from Ohio, which permits a wide range of organizations to authorize charter schools, to examine the relationship between type of authorizer and charter-school effectiveness as measured by students’ achievement trajectories. © 2014 Association for Education Finance and Policy

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the involvement of student organizations toward quality assurance and enhancement in higher education institutions in Romania. In order to achieve this purpose, a survey among student organizations from the main university cities in Romania has been conducted between December 2013 and May 2014. In order to analyze the results we used the frequency distribution method. One of the main findings of this paper is that there is a strong desire of a high quality education among student organizations, yet some of them do not become involved in activities contributing to quality assurance and enhancement. This paper can become a valuable tool for policy makers of the Romanian national students federations in order to design the best policies meant to encourage all the organizations participate in the quality assurance and enhancement process.

The economic crisis that has spread during the last few years, the rising unemployment rate and the increased share of elderly persons to the total population have led to the expansion of social protection expenditure in Europe. Although the role of states is vital when it comes to ensuring social justice and help citizens through troubled times, the social protection systems are facing tremendous pressure due to the overall increasing expenditure at a higher rate compared to that of the economic growth.

Mit der Patientenmobilitätsrichtlinie (2011/24/EU) wurde eine verbindliche gesetzliche Grundlage geschaffen, im Bereich der hochspezialisierten Gesundheitsversorgung freiwillig und in strukturierter Form in europäischen Referenznetzwerken (ERN) von Gesundheits-dienstleistern und Fachzentren zusammenzuarbeiten. Dabei kommt dem Austausch von Fachwissen eine besondere Bedeutung zu. Diese qualitative Studie geht der Frage nach, wel-che wesentlichen Faktoren den Informations- und Wissensaustausch sowie das Lernen in Netzwerken beeinflussen und wie diese gefördert werden können. Es werden Netzwerkkoor-dinatoren und deren steuernde Einheiten in den hochspezialisierten Versorgungsbereichen Krebs und Seltene Erkrankungen in Deutschland und in Frankreich sowie auf europäischer Ebene befragt. Die Studie wird durch einen Literaturvergleich von bi- und trilateralen Ge-sundheitskooperationen mit multilateralen Netzwerken ergänzt. Für die ERN wird die zentra-le Bedeutung der digitalen Medien und Technologien herausgearbeitet sowie die Empfeh-lung ausgesprochen, die ERN ein systematisches Wissensverwendungs- und -generierungskonzept erarbeiten zu lassen. Durch die zukünftigen ERN wird die vernetzte Informationsgesellschaft Einzug in die medizinische Praxis halten. Dans le cadre de la directive relative à l’application des droits des patients en matière de soins de santé transfrontaliers (2011/24/EU), une base légale a été mise en place afin que les prestataires de soins de santé et les centres d‘expertise puissent travailler ensemble de façon facultative et structurée sous forme de réseaux européens de référence dans le do-maine des soins hautement spécialisés. Dans ce contexte, l´échange de savoir prend une importance particulière. Cette étude qualitative recherche les facteurs déterminant l´échange d´informations et de savoir, ainsi que l´apprentissage au sein d´un réseau et comment ces échanges peuvent être encouragés. Dans cette étude, les coordonnateurs de réseaux et les personnes déterminants leur politique sont interrogées dans le domaine des soins hautement spécialisés du cancer et des maladies rares en Allemagne, en France mais aussi au niveau européen. A cette étude s’ajoute une comparaison de la coopération médi-cale transfrontalière bi- et trilatérale avec les réseaux européens de référence multilaté-raux. Le point fort étant mis sur l´importance des médias et techniques virtuels. Un autre aspect primordial est la recommandation, pour les ERN, de mettre en place systématique-ment un concept d´ application et de création du savoir. Grâce à la mise en place des ERN, le monde des informations connectées en réseaux fera son entrée dans le secteur médical.

Recent debate on the effectiveness of tax rebates has concentrated on the degree to which they can affect economic activity, which depends on the methodology, the state of the economy, and the underlying assumptions. A better approach to assess the effectiveness of these monetary transfers is by comparing this method to alternative policies—like the traditional monetary injections through the financial intermediaries. A limited participation model calibrated to the U.S. economy is used to show that the higher the proportion of the monetary injection channeled through the consumers—instead of banks—leads to a less vigorous recovery of output but softens the detrimental effect on the utility of the representative household from the inherent inflationary pressure. This result is robust to the relative importance of the injection (utilization of resources) and alternative utility functions.

The focus of this paper is to examine potential impacts of fiscal and monetary policies on stock market performance in Poland. Applying the GARCH model and based on a sample during 1999.Q2 to 2012.Q4, this paper finds that Poland's stock market index is not affected by the ratio of government deficits or debt to GDP and is negatively influenced by the money market rate. The stock index and the ratio of M3 to GDP show a quadratic relationship with a critical value of 46.03%, suggesting that they have a positive relationship if the M3/GDP ratio is less than 46.03% and a negative relationship if the M3/GDP ratio is greater than 46.03%. Furthermore, Poland's stock index is positively associated with industrial production and stock market performance in Germany and the U.S. and negatively affected by the nominal effective exchange rate and the inflation rate.

World economy is living a time of change, and the complexity of change has implied a new research agenda on the role of economic policy in society. The role, types and effects of economic policy have been major issues in economic science since its origins. Jean Tinbergen (1956) [1] established the basis for the traditional theory of economic policy in economics and he tried to show how economic knowledge could be organized to regulate and guide economic systems. Nevertheless, this traditional approach has been improved through several contributions, for example when Eggertsson (1997) [2] incorporated the existence of incomplete knowledge, endogenous politics and institutional change in the theory of economic policy. A series of earlier CEPR reports documented a substantial decline over the last three decades in the share of “good jobs” in the U.S. economy. This fall-off in job quality took place despite a large increase in the educational attainment and age of the workforce, as well as the productivity of the average U.S. worker. This report evaluates the likely impact of several policies that seek to address job quality, including universal health insurance, a universal retirement system (over and above Social Security), a large increase in college attainment, a large increase in unionization, and gender pay equity.

We study whether forecasts of the rate of change of the price of oil are rational. To this end, we consider a model that allows the shape of forecasters’ loss function to be studied. The shape of forecasters’ loss function may be consistent with a symmetric or an asymmetric loss function. We find that an asymmetric loss function often (but not always) makes forecasts look rational, and we also report that forecast rationality may have changed over time.

The issue concerning the collaboration between the academic environment and the business environment presents a larger interest at European level. The approach of the superior education institutions to representatives of labour market, becomes a solution for the superior education institutions, as they function in the society and knowledge economy – opened to a great number of students waiting to be offered the opportunity of a harmonious integration on the labour market after graduation – to accomplish goals related to students’ professional training, to the accommodation and knowledge implementation in real economy, to the accomplishment of an economic-financial performance that could provide them their survival in the competitive economy. This work, starting from the interests of both parties regarding partnerships, identifies and materializes a series of management activity courses in this field, fact that allows the scientific approach of the collaboration university – labour market representatives.

In the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, many countries are hoping that massive increases in their money supplies will revive their economies. Evaluating the effectiveness of this strategy using traditional statistical methods would require the construction of an extremely complex economic model of the world that showed how each country’s situation affected all other countries. No matter how complex that model was, it would always be subject to the criticism that it had omitted important variables. Omitting important variables from traditional statistical methods ruins all estimates and statistics. This paper uses a relatively new statistical method that solves the omitted variables problem. This technique produces a separate slope estimate for each observation which makes it possible to see how the estimated relationship has changed over time due to omitted variables. I find that the effectiveness of monetary policy has fallen between the first quarter of 2003 and the fourth quarter of 2012 by 14%, 36%, 38%, 32%, 29% and 69% for Japan, the UK, the USA, the Euro area, Brazil, and the Russian Federation respectively. I hypothesize that monetary policy is suffering from diminishing returns because it cannot address the fundamental problem with the world’s economy today, that problem is a global glut of savings that is either sitting idle or funding speculative bubbles.

This report from the field describes the design, implementation, and early evaluation results of the Healthy Weight Collaborative, a federally-supported learning collaborative to develop, test, and disseminate an integrated change package of six promising, evidence-based clinical and community-based strategies to prevent and treat obesity for children and families.

From the birth of the human capital theory, economists were interested to find evidences showing the impact of the human capital on the economic output, discussing and debating more or less the effect of economic growth on the accumulation of human capital in the economy and the association between education and health. The paper aims to test several econometric models to explain the relationship between human capital and economic output. Using World Bank data, 17 countries with the fastest economic growth rate during 1960-2010 were selected. Four econometric models are tested to explain the accumulation of human capital as input and as effect of economic output. Correlation coefficients were calculated to highlight the association between education and life expectancy. The paper demonstrates that human capital, in his two components (education and health), in countries with a fast growth rate, are positively and strongly related to the economic output, in both senses, human capital being input and output of the economic growth. On the one hand, the economic growth adds to the resources available in the economy for improvements in health and education and, on the other hand, human capital is influencing significantly the economic output. Education and health are interrelated, being positively and strongly associated.

Growing concentration of higher education processes in big urban settings has multiple consequences both for the metropolitan area themselves and for their surroundings as well. This paper takes on the question of whether and how these processes affect the level of welfare of local communities functioning in directly surrounding areas (non-metropolitan). In particular, if these processes contribute more to diminishing or to increasing disparities in these areas. To this end, the inequality of multi-dimensional local deprivation index (interpreted as a measure of welfare à rebours) is calculated on the basis of data from the Local Data Bank using Theil’s index.
