Switchable metamaterial absorbers/reflectors (MAs/MRs) are important bifunctional electromagnetic devices and have been the subject of numerous scientific studies. However, there is a lack of bifunctional devices that operate in the terahertz band. Here, we theoretically propose a broadband switchable MA with many excellent properties, such as good thermal stability, high insensitivity to inferior film quality of the graphene, excitation polarization and wide incident angles, and outstanding structural parameter tolerance. The bandwidth of the proposed broadband MA is 3.4 THz with an absorptivity over 90% in the frequency band of 1.6-5 THz. The proposed absorber can switch to a reflector with a reflectivity over 93% by tuning the chemical potential of the graphene and reducing the temperature. Therefore, the switching intensity of the proposed MA exceeds 83%. The physical mechanisms of the broadband absorption of the proposed structure are investigated using the impedance matching theory and the multiple reflection interference theory. The reflection mechanism of the proposed broadband reflector is discussed by analyzing the effective parameters. The absorption and switching mechanism are theoretically investigated by performing detailed numerical calculations to analyze the surface loss intensity, electric field, and magnetic field. These findings can accelerate the development of terahertz broadband switchable devices.

The general nonlinear behavior of multiple cascaded resonators is analyzed by using the coupled-mode theory in time and then compared to a single resonator from the viewpoint of optical bistable operation. Our analysis reveals that from the perspective of switching intensity, the multiple resonator structure is more advantageous than the single resonator with an equivalently increasing quality factor. It is also shown that a switching intensity-response time product, suggested as a performance metric for optical bistable devices, decreases linearly as the number of cascaded resonators increases. The effect of coupling n resonators is equivalent to a single resonator device with n-time increased quality factor in terms of the performance metric. The coupled-mode theory analysis is confirmed by a numerical study of the bistable operation of one-dimensional photonic crystal resonator structures using the finite-difference time-domain method. Numerical solutions to the set of coupled nonlinear wave equations for a novel mirrorless counterpropagating quasi-phase-matched (c-QPM) device are presented. Mirrorless c-QPM is investigated in stand-alone and in two interferometric configurations for all-optical switching (AOS) applications. The switching intensity is found to be very low using existing materials (e.g., 500 mW in a 1-cm-long KTP waveguide with a 10 μm2 effective area). Additionally, parameter sets are found that minimize pulse breakup and improve the possibility of a practical implementation.
