But the basis of professional qualification always remains in practice. The range and methods in field instruction are still far too uneven and far too often narrow and insubstantial but this is not the chief reason why field work is not more fully supported in school and in agencies. Both schools and field must equally bear the reproach. Social work, like all professions, began apprentice-fashion in the field. Resistance to and lack of support for field work on the agency side is more diffuse in motive, less understandable and defensible than among faculty. As more social workers go on to higher degrees the demand for a truly clinical as well as a social science concentration for the doctorate will be inevitable.
