The article presents several abstracts of research papers presented at the 27th annual conference of the American Association for Public Opinion Research held in Atlantic City, New Jersey from May 18 to 21, 1972. The paper entitled Some Reasons Why Information Campaigns Can Succeed by Harold Mendelsohn of the University of Denver indicates that information campaigns can be effective: if they are planned around the assumption that most of the publics to which they are addressed will be only mildly interested or not interested at all in what is communicated; if middle-range goals which can be reasonably achieved as a consequence of exposure are set as specific objectives; if, after middle-range objectives are set, careful consideration is given to delineating specific targets in terms of their demographic and psychological attributes, their life-styles, value and belief systems, and mass media habits; if mass communications researchers work together with practitioners in developing information campaigns that are based on solid social science principles and designed specifically to overcome the types of indifference that are manifested by well-defined targets; if in their evaluation as much attention is paid to delineating specific aspects of the communications process which contribute to success, as has previously been allotted to demonstrating failure. The paper entitled Mass Communication and Political behavior: A Reassessment of Two Decades of Research by Sidney Kraus claims that mass media, particularly television, play decisive roles in voting and political socialization.

This section presents several abstracts of papers presented at the 25th conference of the Public Opinion Quarterly in 1970. The paper Sociology and the Survey Method by Robin M. Williams, Jr., highlights potential contributions of survey research to the development of sociological theories which include providing essential descriptive data and facilitating discovery. The paper Impact of Survey Research on Economic Theory by Albert G. Hart, states that the resulting stress on distinctions between permanent and transitory elements has strongly stimulated the growth of rigorously formulated dynamic models in macro-economics and econometrics. The paper Classic Models of Communications Effects and Innovations in These Models by Clark Leavitt, proposes a holistic model to replace the hierarchical model with its assumption of a discrete chain of cognitive processes. The holistic model proposes that behavioral effects can be explained sufficiently by three processes, arousal, information acquisition and planning. The theme of the paper The Wrong Enemy by Daniel Yankelovich is that the generation gap theory, is a misleading and dangerous half-truth. While a real generation gap exists on a few important values, such as premarital sexual relations and organized religion, research shows that most other core values are shared by young people and their parents.

Information about the Fifth Forest Biology Conference, which was hosted by the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI) in Raleigh, North Carolina, on May 11-13, 1970, is presented. Topics discussed include silviculture, the effect of phosphorous on the slash and loblolly pine in the South Carolina coastal plain and the evaluation of the wood, fiber and paper properties. The Executive Committee of the Society for the Study of Social Problems approved a plan to pre-publish papers to be presented. The special problems committees of the Society are encouraged to share in this, although it will be by decision of each committee. It is planned that all of the presentations on the two symposia will be pre-published. Papers to be pre-published must be submitted not later than April 15, 1958. An expanded version of some of the papers will be printed in the journal "Social Problems." Probably the majority will be mimeographed and distributed before the annual meeting to the membership at cost. Not later than a month after distribution of the papers those who wish to be considered as discussants will submit a criticism of the paper. From these the committee chairmen will select persons to serve as discussants, although they may ask others to serve in addition. Each discussant will be given about seven minutes. The aim is to provide a maximum amount of time for discussion of the presentations.

Information on several papers discussed at the Fifth Rochester Conference on Data Acquisition and Processing in Biology and Medicine is presented. The conference was held at the University of Rochester Medical School, July 25-27, 1966. Some 120 physicians, electrical engineers, biologists, and computer specialists attended the conference. The keynote address was delivered by Karl Franck.

The symposium on directions in mass communications research includes excerpts from seven papers that were prepared for an Arden House conference that was held in May 1913. The conference was part of a larger project, made possible by a grant from the Markle Foundation to the Graduate School of journalism, Columbia University. Its primary purpose was to identify questions deserving priority attention by mass communication researchers in the coming years. The papers on uses and gratifications and on the mass media and socialization are concerned primarily with the individual; the papers on national development and on government-media relations focus primarily on social organization; and those on mass communication's professional personnel and management relate to media sociology. A final paper, examining research questions that emerge as a result of new communication technologies, cuts across the three areas. The full texts of the papers from which these excerpts were selected by the editors, together with other papers that attempt to provide an overview of the entire field of mass communication research and to suggest priority areas for future research, are scheduled for publication in paperback and cloth editions by Praeger Publishers in the Fall of 1974.

It is difficult to generalize about forty papers and as many hours of formal and informal questioning and discussion, engaged in by the more than a thousand informed and thoughtful and articulate members of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) who attended this Tenth Anniversary Professional Symposium. This note has been sounded, interestingly enough, at a symposium dedicated not to the whole range of NASW interests, but rather to the advancement of practice and knowledge in contrast to social policy and action. The result of this notion that practice enacts policy has been to pose a new model of a social worker who, even as a casework clinician or as a therapeutically oriented group worker, must continuously orient himself to the ways in which his practice methods, his agency structures, his intellectual mindsets may advance or block the carrying out of core values and professional commitments. The social worker is certainly not seen as a medicine man whose one brew is hawked at all possible crossroads and offered as solution to all possible maladies.

This is an exceptional study of the ways in which those attending a social science convention acquire and use the information obtained there. The authors also pinpoint the information most interesting and useful to the ample of convention attendants, and the impact of this information on scholarly productivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article focuses on proceedings of the 10th annual conference of the American Association for Public Research that held at Madison, Wisconsin-based Hotel Loraine, from April 13-16, 1955. Several papers discussed in this conference include Stuart Dodd, director of the Washington Public Opinion Laboratory (WPOL), who presented a paper entitled "Formulas for Spreading Opinions-A Report of Controlled Experiments on Leaflet Messages in Project Revere", in which he described the origin, purposes and findings of the three-year study which WPOL had conducted for the Air Force. The article also presents other paper by speaker Samuel W. Blizzard who reviewed his experiences in a current theological seminar project designed to explore the use of social science in training parish ministers, and, more specifically, to inquire into how the sociologist-faculty member can help in this training. Blizzard described the milieu in which a social scientist operates as a theological seminary faculty member, noting that seminars course emphasis is away from the social sciences, the theological party line must be understood by the incoming sociologist faculty member.

The article offers information on several conferences related to the field of biosciences, held during 1963 in the U.S. The Interdisciplinary Conference Program of the American Institute of Biological Sciences Inc. held a conference on minimum ecological systems for man. The American Association for the Advancement of Science held its fourteenth annual science conference. The second symposium of the Royal Entomological Society of London discussed the papers on insect reproduction.

This article focuses on the joint meeting of European Society for Dermatological Research and the Society for Investigative Dermatology, held in Amsterdam, from May 17-19, 1972. The interest of the meeting was sustained by the uniformly high quality of the papers both as far as content and presentation were concerned. Speakers were concise and fluent and there was a welcome air of professionalism about all the sessions. Many of the papers were on pharmacological topics. There were few papers concerning specific diseases although there was one entitled "Epidermal Kinetics in Lichen Planus."

The article presents information about the 2nd Franco-British Reunion organized by the British Association of Dermatology which took place in London, England during July 20-21, 1956. The first day was occupied by eight papers related to dermatology, four of which were read by our French guests and four by British members. The nest morning a clinical meeting was held at Saint Thomas's Hospital at which 41 dermatological cases were demonstrated and afterwards discussed. The principal speakers were dermatologist G. B. Dowling and dermatologist Alice Carleton proposed the health of the guests.

The article focuses on the book "Pemphigus: Occupational Dermatoses Due to Chemical Sensitization," edited by E. Liebner and E. Flórián. The book is a collection of 141 papers read at the Congress of the Hungarian Dermatological Society in 1965. The papers are published in English, French, German and Russian. Short summaries in English are provided for the Russian papers but not for those in the other languages. Two main themes are dealt with. Pemphigus and allied disorders and Occupational Dermatoses due to chemical sensitization.

The article presents information on the first international society of tropical dermatology held in Naples, Italy during the week commencing June 8, 1964 in the Palazzo dei Congressi, Mostra d'Ottremare. Two halls were used simultaneously during the Congress, a main hall with very comfortable seating accommodation for one thousand persons and equipment for simultaneous translation into five languages, and a small halt with less comfortable seating and no translators. There were 520 participants from over 50 countries, and altogether about 130 papers were presented. The translators were at times sorely tried by speakers who attempted to read a 30-minute paper in the 10 minutes allowed, and one cannot help but conclude that brevity is foreign to the natures of many of those who speak at international medical congresses.

The twenty-ninth annual conference of the American Association for Public Opinion Research will be held May 30 to June 4, 1974, on the theme of "understanding the United States." In another development, a two-year project now underway at the University of Illinois' Survey Research Laboratory will collate and synthesize present knowledge of consumer behavior gathered from various social science disciplines. The Institute for Survey Research at Temple University has completed a mail survey of members of the American Psychological Association's Consumer Psychology division, with the aim of developing a more systematic understanding of ethical problems encountered by consumer psychologists.

The Second World Congress of Sociology will be organized by the International Sociological Association (ISA) under the auspices of UNESCO from August 24 to September 1, 1953 in the city of Liege, Belgium. Sociologists of all countries of the world, professors, research workers and students, are cordially invited to take part in this Congress and are asked to contact the ISA Secretariat for registration and detailed information. The Congress will be centered on the presentation and discussion of papers in two major fields including social stratification and social mobility and intergroup conflicts and their mediation. It will also include important discussions of recent development in sociological research and of the problems relating to the professional activities and responsibilities of sociologists. All papers and reports to be prepared for the Congress will be duplicated and distributed in advance and will be presented by general reporters to be followed by prepared discussants for each section or sub-section.

The article highlights the second International Congress of Parasitology in the U.S. It is stated that the organizers attempted to provide an official sponsorship for the corridor conferences and eliminate most of the formal presentations. The usual 10-minute papers were replaced by a large series of workshops. The presentations were confined to the opening plenary session, closing plenary session and seven technical review sessions.

This article presents information on slanted subjective probabilities and randomization. The randomization argument contains a concession to the frequentist-objectivist school in probability theory. This is because the argument recognizes that reasonable individuals may be reluctant to base their actions on unstable and controversial degrees of belief, except if it can be specifically demonstrated to them that in the given circumstances these beliefs are equivalent to the stable and uncontroversial beliefs which they have concerning practically fair coins or dice, well-shuffled cards, etc. The repetitive processes generated by practically fair devices of the latter type are the "standard processes" of the author's symposium paper: they all are well-behaved processes by frequentist-objectivist criteria. When a subjectivist develops a randomization argument he makes the concession of attributing special significance to standard-process probabilities. The author's own position too is subjectivistic but he too favors some degree of hybridity.

The article presents the proceedings of the Twenty-Second Annual Conference of American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) that was held on May 18-21, 1967 at Bolton Landing, New York. The conference was divided into fifteen formal sessions and three round tables. The new format also consists a presentation program of the best papers from a recent AAPOR competition for graduate students. In addition to the informative meetings, numerous social events were also organized. Also, the AAPOR Award of 1967 for distinguished achievement in the field of public opinion was presented to Hans Zeisel, a social researcher. Some of the topics on which papers were presented at the conference are: variations in the application of theory to attitude and opinion research; interviewing: special situations and problems; polling and the political process; socio-medical research in sensitive areas; predicting purchasing behavior: alchemy or science? and; computer-assisted analysis of survey data.

This paper is the Presidential Address which was delivered before the Thirteenth Annual Conference on Public Opinion Research in Chicago, Illinois, on May 10, 1958. The original, written and spoken with frequent resort to the first person pleural, loses something of its earnest tone when translated into a more conventional style for publication but it still calls for constructive criticism of current opinion research and effect the preparation to meet the increasingly exacting standards of the future. Frederick F. Stephan was President of the American Association for Public Opinion Research for the 1957-1959 term. He is Professor of Social Statistics at Princeton University. The central principle of the Conference is to take a broad look at what is being done in opinion research and to think more deeply about its meaning for clients, the public at large, and researchers themselves. In furtherance of this purpose the author chose as the title of the address on which this paper is based, a simple but serious question.

Information about the 2nd Antarctic Biological Symposium that was held in Cambridge, England in 1968. The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) and the International Union of Biological Sciences organized the symposium in collaboration with the Sub-Committee for the International Biological Program. The convention presented a massive research in the fields such as primary productivity, zooplankton, and the ecology of benthic fauna, benthic algae, and midwater fish fauna.

On 19 November 1966, the Dermatological Association of Australia was dissolved and the Australasian College of Dermatologists created. The inaugural ceremony and first international conference will take place in Sydney 30 April-6 May 1967.

Information about a symposium related to organic matter found in natural waters which was held in Fairbanks, Alaska on September 2-4, 1968 is presented. The symposium was attended by one hundred environmental scientists, and was the first conference that addressed the role of organic matter in aquatic processes. Information about several papers discussed at the U.S.-Japan Joint Conference on Arthropod-borne Plant Viruses that was held in Tokyo, Japan is presented. The aim of the conference was to have the direct exchange of information on the interactions between viruses and arthropods. The symposium featured several biologists including Paul W. Oman, Karl Maramorosch, and Teikichi Fukushi.

The Third International Congress of Radiation Research will be held in Italy during June 26-July 2, 1966. The Plant Phenolic Group of North America will hold its Sixth Annual Meeting during April 6-8, 1966 at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas.
