This paper summarizes a series of thirteen Greek village studies, recently issued in mimeographed form in Athens. The studies were conducted by the Near East Foundation for the Greek Ministry of Agriculture and the American Mission (ECA). This article compares two outwardly different groups of female homosexuals. One group is the community group, which includes nine women drawn from lesbians who reside in a large city and call themselves Kamp. While the campus group is consist of four students and one teaching assistant who are enrolled at a mid-western university. Each of the women was subjected to intensive interview over a period of time. Despite the detail of the data, the smallness of the study population restricts the possibility of generalizing the data to be presented herein. Before discussing the investigation proper, lesbianism is first defined in this paper. The term lesbian originated on the island of Lesbos in the Aegean Sea near Greece. About 590 B.C., many young female inhabitants from Lesbos engaged in mutual sex practices. Hence the term lesbian refers to an erotic relationship between two women. The primary picture presented by the lesbians interviewed in this investigation was hopelessness. Most of them seemed confused regarding their identity. The phrase I do not know was frequently expressed in reference to the future views and plans of lesbians. The knowledge gleaned from interviewing lesbians can paint no totally accurate picture but some commonalities among them.

The article highlights proceeding of meeting of the International Economic Association (IEA), held at Corfu, Greece on September 3, 1958. Those present in the meeting were president of the association Erik Lindahl, vice president Louis Baudin, treasurer E.A.G. Robinson and others. The executive committee considered the advisability of holding open congresses at intervals in conjunction with the meetings of the council. The secretary reported that she had received a suggestion from the president of the Austrian association that a congress might be held either in Salzburg or in Vienna concurrently with the 1962 meeting of the council. The treasurer briefly reported on the refresher course for teachers of advanced economics, organized by the IEA under contract with United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), at Murree in Pakistan during the previous few weeks. The course was based on the UNESCO program for participation in the activities of Member States. Preliminary reports indicated that the course had been welcomed with great interest by Pakistani economists and the results appeared to be satisfactory.

The article presents information related to the paper on international cooperation presented at the 16th meeting of the AGARD Technical Information and Documentation Committee of NATO on July 9 in Athens, Greece.

Data concerning a number of wives' sociological characteristics and some variables reflecting family dynamics were collected on a stratified sample of 540 nonworking Athenian women and a stratified sample of 346 working Athenian women. The wife's generation and level of education, both reflecting her degree of adherence to traditional or modern values, seem to be the most important predictors of family size. The wife's employment was related to a smaller family size only among women over 40 for whom employment may represent a rebellious emancipation, while for younger women the working role is a socially approved and often even expected role. Data based on interviews with a random sample of 133 Athenian wives indicate that, in contrast to highly industrialized countries, the Greek husband's possession of a high education, skilled or prestigeful occupation, and high salary tends to diminish rather than in crease his authority in the family. In practically all circumstances, the two decisions relating to the choice of friends and the use of leisure time are predominantly ‘masculine,’ while the decisions concerning child-rearing, the purchase of clothes, furniture, household equipment, and budgeting are predominantly ‘feminine.’ While the power structure trends in the urban Greek family go contrary to trends in industrialized countries, general trends in marital satisfaction tend to agree with trends observed in more industrialized countries. The article discusses the factors that contributed to the economic growth experienced by Greece after the war in 1949. The rate of growth implications of the national income estimates for the years 1950-61 suggest a continuous increase in real terms, except for 1952, when there was a decrease. After 1953 the Greek economy appears to have grown again at a fluctuating annual rate due mainly to sharp fluctuations in agricultural output. Since 1950, the economy has grown very fast. Agriculture ranks second in terms of growth, with an average percentage growth of 5.65 percent for the twelve years. By the year 1955 the agricultural output had reached a level from which further increases were not easy. The rise in income and productivity in the country was made possible by the investment which took place during the period 1950-61. The rate of capital formation expressed as a percentage of GNP was high compared with levels in some other underdeveloped countries. It is evident that increase in the urban population should have been an additional factor in promoting economic development in Greece.

An interaction model for the diffusion of innovations is developed. It is postulated that when social boundaries are crystallized between two groups in conflict a system of relationships and communication within each group is established which may speed the acceptance-diffusion of innovations. An hypothesis derived from this model is empirically tested through data collected in a town in Greece. The rapid diffusion of strawberry cultivation (innovation) is found to be a function of political polarization between left and right. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This is a study of familism among Greek Gymnasium students in a peasant area of the Peloponnesus. The subjects' responses to a familism scale are interpreted in terms of Greece's family system and compared with the reactions of three samples of American Mennonites and Methodists. This study indicates that certain techniques may be profitably employed in more than one country and that quantitative comparative research may supply us with a wealth of useful data. The article presents some influences of the social environment. The most important element in the life of animals as well as plants is the soil from which they make their living. The greatness of nations can often be measured in terms of how they have made use of the soil, the most important resource granted them by Nature. Neither in Athens, in spite of the wisdom of Solon, nor in Rome, in spite of the eloquence of Cicero and his colleagues, was an agricultural policy evolved which made for a stable and satisfied peasantry. Yet such agrarian procedure had been achieved in the New World; the Indians of Peru were guaranteed their collective security by the Inca and his administrator--in return, to be sure, for the surrender of all individual initiative. These farmers terraced steep hillsides, irrigated their fields, and used guano extensively as fertilizer. Surplus crops were stored in huge state granaries against the chance of famine in some other area. There was no private property nor difference in fortune because the state looked after the needs of all.

The article discusses political implications of the modern Greek concept of the self. Political scientists, aware of the significance of social structure and cultural patterns for an understanding of political processes, have attempted to formulate conceptual frameworks and models, which incorporate cultural and sociological phenomena. A requisite for the development of science in the social sciences, as well as in the natural sciences, is that the findings of one discipline should not contradict the findings of any other discipline. Using modern Greece as a case study, an effort is made to show that the view of self which a people holds, by determining an individuals conception of his relationship to the world around him, significantly affects the functioning of a political system. If the interrelationship of the view of self; cultural patterns, social structure and political institutions can be more clearly delineated, then the processes of modernization, political development and democracy may become better understood.

The article focuses on several researches undertaken by the Athens Social Sciences Center in Greece in 1963. The Institute was founded in 1961 through the collaboration of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and the Greek Ministries of Education and Coordination. Its objective is focused on contributing to national and regional development through the collection of basic information concerning Greek life and social institutions and the promotion of social sciences in the region. The several researches and studies conducted by the institution evolved around the mentioned objective such as a major survey on urbanization, investigation on social institutions on mountain villages and the function of a small town.
