The farm transmission or succession practices employed by 636 Wisconsin ‘century farm’ families are analyzed in this paper. Ownership of each farm has been handed down to descendants of the first owner for a period of at least a century—1848 to 1948. These 636 farms have been transferred a total of 1,458 times, or an average of 2.3 transfers per farm. Sons became subsequent owners more often than daughters or collateral descendants. Out of 1,458 transfers, 74.6 per cent were to sons, 3.6 per cent were to sons and daughters jointly, 14.5 per cent were to daughters, and 7.3 per cent were to relatives other than children. Statistical tests of significance revealed that the sibling order of sons who succeeded their fathers was not important in determining which one acquired ownership, except in the case of five-son families. The occupational prestige of farming is particularly important in underdeveloped countries, because typically more than half of the employed population of these countries are engaged in farming and because urban industrial centers necessarily draw a large proportion of their populations from the farming areas. The real sense of the prestige of farming is the major factor in the subjective experience of mobility as seen by people in underdeveloped countries. As a part of the larger study on occupational mobility, the author made a research on occupational prestige in the area of Dumaguete City, Philippines. The research method employed by the researcher is mainly interview regarding occupational affiliation in the city. In analysis of the meaning of prestige ranking of a particular occupation, the author related its prestige positions to attitudes and characteristics presumed to be connected with the concept. One of the most useful is a measure of perceived social mobility for persons who have intergenerational mobility, then education and occupational aspirations. As a result, the author concluded that relatively high prestige attributed to farming is not reflected subjectively in the three measurement basis stated above. In a word, the prestige attributed to farmers appears to be anomalous. This could be explained by peculiar connotations attached to farming and farm which is highly related to the prestige of the occupation. If the function could be identified with other terms, perhaps the anomaly would disappear.

Consumption studies of cotton-farm families show that at low income levels these families keep family expenses within their low incomes. Families on similar incomes and composition in other areas and types of farming spend much more than their current incomes. However, at moderate and high income levels, cotton-farm families spend very much as do other families. The low income cotton-farm family has adjusted its consumption to low income. Since this is so, effective agricultural programs must not be limited to plane for adjustment in production. Plans for improving health, plans for better schools, and plans for stimulating desire for more adequate goods and services must also be included. Consumption studies show that cotton-farm families produce more food for home consumption than families of similar composition and income in other areas and types of farming, but are more poorly housed. Such data are important in agricultural planning. Consumption studies make available data which can serve as a basis for working out minimum family budgets. This article focuses on the harvest technology for the production of small grains and the state of farm labor supply in Great Britain during 1790-1870. In Great Britain and Japan the most successful developments in raising farm output were secured initially via the gradual penetration of inexpensive biological innovations. In one proto-industrial agriculture in Great Britain, the demand for labour-saving methods was successfully met by an intermediate technology, developed within or alongside an existing framework of traditional hand-tool techniques. The author presents three counter arguments: first, that between 1790 and 1870 there occurred in Britain an important transformation in hand-harvesting technology secured for the most part through the intermediate technology of improved hand-tool methods; second, that this was primarily a response to a deteriorating harvest labour market; and third, that for some time after 1850 many farmers preferred to deepen their investment in this range of seemingly obsolescent techniques rather than to exploit the more worth-while factor-saving alternative of mechanization.
