BOOKS ,INTERNATIONAL economic relations - Abstract
The article focuses on books on world economy. These are, "The Advertising Agency Business Around the World" and "Labor in Developing Economies," edited by Walter Galenson. The first book is a concise, factual guide to the advertising agency systems of 38 countries around the world. For each country the main information pertinent to agencies is provided including legal status, functions, compensation systems and associations. For most countries considerable additional information is given about the nature of different media, expenditures for advertising, etc. The amount of this supplementary information varies greatly from country to country, however. The second book is a collection of papers describing the characteristics of the labor movements in Pakistan, Indonesia, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Israel, and Turkey. A competent scholar who has done thorough research on his subject writes each chapter. There is sufficient written material already available on labor in these countries so that the chapters convey little new information.

This paper considers the optimal storage of books by size in libraries. A network model is developed to determine the optimum number of shelf heights to use which will minimize the shelving cost for a given collection of books. The model is analyzed and solved by a well known operations research technique of finding the shortest path in a directed network. Results of an experimental study to apply this model to a sample collection of books from the Purdue University Library are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SOCIAL action ,VOLUNTEER service ,CRITICISM ,BOOKS ,ACTION theory (Psychology) ,SOCIAL psychology - Abstract
In this article the author comments on a book by Jonathan H. Turners and Leonard Beeghleys, entitled "Current Folklore in the Criticism of Parsonian Action Theory." The author agrees that the philosophical views of the freedom of the will never did constitute the primary basis of his own conception of the voluntarism which was an essential aspect of the theory of action. The argument about the dangers of reification of theoretical schemes and the attendant fallacy of misplaced concreteness was singled out as convincing. A suggestion is made for Turner and Beeghley to come up with a specific and concrete illustration of what they mean by their allegations of vagueness. According to the author there has been an increasing conviction that autonomous action of the individual or voluntaristic action is to a degree not fully appreciated by our forebears, that freedom and hence the capacity for voluntarism is a function of organization. This organization is relevant at all lvels of the system of human action.

CLASSIFICATION ,DOCUMENTATION ,INFORMATION resources management ,INFORMATION science ,BOOKS ,INFORMATION organization - Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to analyze different types of classification systems characterized by different types of subjects. The most important types of subjects in documentation are documents and terms, but other systems for other subjects are discussed. Systems of science are dealt with as an introduction to document systems. Every system ought to have a structure that will fit the subjects. The hierarchies for documents and terms are not the same. if we try to classify a category of subjects in a system made for another category of subjects (for example, classifying terms or technical products according to a document system) we will always meet with difficulties. We should not be bound for the future to now existing systems, but for each type of subject we have to create the best possible system or variant. Our aim should be to get a system of systems, where every individual system as far as possible-without distortion of its primary function-has common features with the other systems. Principles for designing a modern universal document system based on concepts and adapted to technology and a universal term system are advanced. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DOCUMENTATION ,INFORMATION science ,RECORDS ,TELEPHONES ,SOUND recordings ,BOOKS - Abstract
The article discusses about the documentation problems. The ultimate purpose of documentation is to make available a particular bit of information to the person who needs it. Documentation has to do with the communication of information and knowledge across the barriers of time and distance. Such communication may be in any of several media, for example, film, sound recording, the printed page, or microreproduction. One assumption, however, is that records are kept. Thus the telephone would not ordinarily be thought of as a documentation instrument.

The article focuses on the study which aims at building a device for measuring the effects of science instruction on the scientific attitudes. The scientific attitude is named as "Conviction of Cause and Effect Relations." The study has followed the testing procedures of "Paper and Pencil" method. This method has been adopted because it involves fewer possibilities of misinterpretation. This testing procedure method involves equal appearing intervals. However some changes have been made in the method including shortening of the scale, ratings of statements by a few experts, values of scales are obtained by formula and items have been placed in categories. The accumulation of a satisfactory list of items was the most important and crucial step in the composition of an attitude scale. The data was collected from all resources including previous studies, popular books and magazines, newspapers, radio, motion pictures and classroom situations.
