This paper first takes a rather pessimistic look at what has been accomplished in recent years in understanding the "price mechanism." It then takes up two points in some detail. First, it is shown that stationary expectations do not ensure the convergence of all equilibrium paths on to a steady state in a neoclassical model with heterogeneous capital goods (an appendix works an example). Quantitative, comparative studies of violent conflict within societies constitute a growing subfield of political science. Some common assumptions of these studies are the premises that conflict events have similar properties and causes across all types of contemporary nations, and that these properties and causes are susceptible to reliable and valid measurement. Convergence is apparent in some results: violent conflict intensifies in periods of rapid socioeconomic change; the transition to socioeconomic "modernity" helps lessen revolutionary activity but not turmoil; increased coerciveness by regimes tends under some specifiable circumstances to exacerbate civil conflict; and there is little relationship between the incidence of domestic and foreign conflict as cause, effect, or alternatives. The study of perception during the past decade has been moving along two converging paths. The article makes an effort to discover whether the two paths have yet converged or not. One approach to perception is primarily concerned with perception in and of itself, without primary regard for the manner in which perception is imbedded in the other, ongoing activities of the perceiver. The subject instructed to be neutral, accurate, and attentive is assumed to have a basically neutral attitude toward the stimulus, wishing neither to eat, destroy, caress, nor in any manner to use the stimulus presented to him. Sometimes, it is true, the parameters of set and past experience are systematically varied and related to changes in perceptual response. The second approach attempts to treat perception in a broader behavioral context. Perhaps the most serious block in our progress to convergence has been a lack of systematic rigor amongst the functionalists concerning the variables, which they are required to study by the nature of their theories of behavior. This article has been for us an adventure in trying to close a gap between such concepts as need or value on the one hand and such more specifically perceptual mechanisms as closure, assimilation, adaptive level, and the trace-process communication network.
