On January 7, 1952, one of America's leading geographers, W.L.G. Joerg and chief archivist of the Cartographic Records Branch of the National Archives at Washington D.C., died suddenly of cerebral hemorrhage at the age of sixty-six. Until the day before his death lie retained his customary mental and physical vigor and during the week was busily engaged in research and in making plans for summer field work in one of his favorite regions, the northeastern Appalachian Uplands. An inductive study of maps of the Arkansas Ozarks shows that the place name or toponym has value as a tool for the cultural geographer who is primarily concerned with the manifestations on the land of cultural origins, contacts, and migrations. By analyzing a collection of 2,502 place names taken from maps of northern Arkansas dating from 1858 to 1962, it is evident that the process of naming the land was both a folk and an official one. The geographical expression of these cultural processes provides an insight into the role of the habitat in primary settlement, and to the continuum of change in a little-known region of the United States. An astonishing volume of material has been published on place names in the United States. But when one examines this abundance one is impressed by the fact that practically all of the serious place-name studies have been done by philologists from a linguistic point of view; few of these studies have been done by geographers, or from a geographic point of view. Place names may be considered as significant in the cultural landscape as are house types, field patterns, or modes of transport. This article presents life history of geographer Henry Gannett was born at Bath, Maine, on August 24, 1846. He attended local schools until his twentieth year, when he went to college. There he graduated, receiving his baccalaureate in science and the next year the degree of mining engineer at the Hooper Mining School, Mississippi. He continued work at an astronomical observatory from 1870 to 1871 and in 1871 went to Spain to observe the eclipse of the sun. Gannett was one of the founders of the Association of American Geographers and took an active part in its meetings.

This article focuses on Lester Earl Klimm, former president of Association of American Geographers, as of March 1962. He was known to his colleagues as a man of broad interests and sympathies, whose ability, modesty, sincerity, patience and quiet humor enabled him to he useful in a great variety of tasks. He grew up at Easthampton in the Connecticut Valley of Massachusetts. He received both his degree and assistant professorship in 1930. Lester Klimm was among the first geographers utilized in the World War II effort. After some consulting work, he accepted a full-time appointment in the Topographic Branch of the Military Intelligence Service and wrote numerous reports. Klimm was especially interested in the more careful organization and more critical analysis of geographical data.
