Abstract

The article presents information about events related to computing machinery. The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), San Francisco chapter announced one-day symposium. The fifth annual symposium of the ACM San Francisco Bay Area Chapter was scheduled to be held at the Jack Tar Hotel, San Francisco, on October 29, 1965. The Advance Program of the 20th Annual International Systems Association (ISA) Conference and Exhibit was scheduled to be held in Los Angeles on October 4-7, 1965. Requests for participation were to be addressed to the ISA/Show/'65 Public Relations Counsel, in Los Angeles, California. The technical program for the 6th Annual Symposium on Switching Circuit Theory and Logical Design to be held at Ann Arbor, Michigan, October 6-8, 1965, was available with the organizers. The program for the technical sessions was made such so that it may interest ACM members. Six technical sessions and a banquet, to be held, were planned by the sponsors (the University of Michigan and the Switching Circuit Theory and Logical Design Committee of the IEEE Computer Group).

The article discusses several inventions in the U.S. Some of these inventions include a rotating drum with inside paddles for producing gluconic acid, a mercury contact switch which is used where electric current is commonly turned off and on, and reflectors plated with rhodium for store windows. Other inventions include a low-pressure tire, organ keys made from urea plastic and a nickel cast iron.

Abstract

The emphasis in this work has been on maximal utilization under critical conditions, of the operator, lines, and subscribers, in the belief that in combat communications they are extremely important, and limiting factors should be known and understood so that corrective measures can be taken This is shown by the difference in service between six or more subscribers, and between short and long conversations Some of the results obtained are as follows There are load conditions where the addition of a second operator does not improve service, in fact, it can be detrimental Under some conditions the number of lines is the limiting factor, and with others the operator is the limiting factor There are heavily loaded conditions where service is not much better with a fast board than with a slow board A board which is 15 per cent faster may give an improvement of less than 1 per cent under some conditions There are conditions that require subscribers to spend far more time in waiting and trying than in talking Operations that take up the operator's time are multiplied to the subscribers, and result in much poorer service than is apparent just from the increase in operator occupancy Adding a second line to a busy subscriber generally improves service to all subscribers Dividing a given calling rate between more subscribers (or trunks) always improves service Increasing the calling rate always makes for poorer service Reducing message length always improves service Long conversations are the greatest obstacle to good service Conference calls can ruin service if prior conversations are allowed to continue without interruption [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The article reports on free outside wiring installation being offered by Commonwealth Edison Co. of Chicago, Illinois as of January 1955. IN addition, the company will give financial aid in heavy-duty inside switches, special circuits for appliances and other inside wiring. One of the advantages of Commonwealth's offering include the 240-volt, three-wire supply which allows a homeowner to run as much as 10 120-volt circuits inside a house.
