President of the American Sociological Society Louis Wirth is planning for a Section on Contributed Papers for the next annual meeting that is to be held in New York from December 28 to 30, December, 1947. Although this Section is particularly de- signed for those younger members of the Society, including graduate students, who have not yet had an opportunity to appear on the pro- gram in other sections, contributions from other members of the Society will be welcome. Since this Committee is working closely with the Committee on Research, it is being urged that members who have completed research papers suitable for oral presentation and which do not fall within the scope of other Sections be offered for consideration in the Section on Contributed Papers.

The article presents the proceedings of the Twenty-Second Annual Conference of American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) that was held on May 18-21, 1967 at Bolton Landing, New York. The conference was divided into fifteen formal sessions and three round tables. The new format also consists a presentation program of the best papers from a recent AAPOR competition for graduate students. In addition to the informative meetings, numerous social events were also organized. Also, the AAPOR Award of 1967 for distinguished achievement in the field of public opinion was presented to Hans Zeisel, a social researcher. Some of the topics on which papers were presented at the conference are: variations in the application of theory to attitude and opinion research; interviewing: special situations and problems; polling and the political process; socio-medical research in sensitive areas; predicting purchasing behavior: alchemy or science? and; computer-assisted analysis of survey data.

The article assess the accomplishments of seven International Congresses of Accountants held to date. The first congress held in 1904 in St. Louis, Missouri sponsored by the Federation of Societies of Public Accountants in the U.S., must be attributed to George Wilkinson, an Illinois certified professional accountant (CPA) who was born in England, but spent his professional life in the U.S. The 1904 Congress was an ambitious event for the American accounting profession. It was held when The American Association of Public Accountants had a membership of only 140 scattered over 15 states, of whom 81 held CPA certificates. The Third International Congress was held in New York City in September 1929. Joseph E. Sterrett and F. van Dien, presidents of the earlier congress, served as Honorary Presidents, while Robert H. Montgomery held the role of President of the 1929 sessions. The 1952 Congress, convened in London, England, included about 80 CPAs from the United States. It exercised a constructive influence on international finance and commerce, and stimulated avid discussion and subsequent research on fluctuating price levels in relation to accounts, accounting requirements for issues of capital, the accountant in industry, the accountant in practice and in public service, and the incidence of taxation.

The article presents updates concerning the field of operations research as of 1960. The Seventh International Meeting of the Institute of Management Sciences will be held in New York City from October 19 to 22. The Argentine Operations Research Society had elected officers of its directing council. The Operations Research Association of Bangalore held its Third Annual General Meeting in Bangalore, India in February 27. The Canadian Operations Research Society has elected D. B. DeLury as president.

The report of the membership committee of the American Sociological Society as of December 1950 is divided into two parts first, a record of organization and operations since the annual meeting in New York last December. Second, policy considerations calling for directives. The work of the committee was organized around three points. The planning and direction was centralized in a headquarters committee consisting of the chairman and the executive office of the society in New York. The implementation, including extensive correspondence and clerical work, was performed by the staff of the national office. National coverage was provided by a field committee consisting of regional and state members of the membership committee and committee representatives appointed for the larger institutions. More than anything else, the effectiveness of this work is due to the cooperative and efficient implementation of plans by the executive officer and the staff of the national office. In the field twenty-five members of the society served to promote the program regionally and more than one hundred institutional representatives combed the larger local markets. The response of these field members and representatives was frequently excellent and indicates the extent of the society's resources in this and other matters when adequate directives and materials are provided centrally.

The article reports on developments related to the activities of the New York Committee on Atomic Information. The committee was established in 1948 to create an awareness on the part of the people of the City of New York that atomic energy is their business and that the new discovery will affect the personal lives of the present generation and the generations to come. Among the committee's achievements include, exhibit on atomic energy, religious and welfare committee, legal committee, and speakers bureau.

The 1974 American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) Conference was held between May 30-June 2, at the Hotel Sagamore in Bolton Landing, Lake George, New York. It was the twenty-ninth annual conference on public opinion. A stimulating program of twenty-two formal sessions, four methodological open discussions, and eighteen luncheon round-table discussions was organized by conference chairman John P. Robinson under the general theme "Continuities in Public Opinion Research." The AAPOR Award for distinguished achievement was presented this year to Bernard Berelson. The methodological open discussions, a 1974 innovation for AAPOR was developed to encourage critical review of the central methodological issues of public opinion research. While varying in format, they seek to encourage member discussion of short papers presented by the discussion leaders and invited panelists.

This section presents the minutes of the Meeting of the American Economic Association Executive Committee held in New York City on March 24, 1972. The first meeting of the 1972 Executive Committee was called to order at 9:40 a. m. in the New York Hilton Hotel, New York, New York, March 24, 1972. The minutes of the meeting of December 26, 1971, were approved. The Secretary reported that a strong committee under the leadership of R. M. Macintosh was in charge of local arrangements for the 1972 meetings in Toronto, Ontario. He reported that the highly successful series of readings and survey volumes published for the Association by Richard D. Irwin, Inc., was being phased out. The Treasurer submitted a revised budget for 1972. He also distributed copies of the financial statements and auditors' reports for 1971 and 1972, which are being published in the May 1972 issue of the American Economic Review. The editor announced that, under authority given at the previous meeting of the Executive Committee, Anna Schwartz had been appointed to the Board of Editors for a three-year term and Barbara Bergmann reappointed for a term of two years. The chairman reported the recommendation of the committee for the Francis A. Walker Medal.

This article presents developments related to several associations and societies. The annual meeting of the American Society of Group Psychotherapy and Psychodrama will be held at the Barbizon Plaza Hotel, New York City during April 27-29, 1960. Contributions of books and journals published after 1945 or "standard authors" published earlier, are needed to assist Asian countries to further their educational programs, both on the secondary and college levels. The Asia Foundation will pay transportation costs. The American Academy of Arts and Sciences' committee on Monograph Prizes announces that the program inaugurated last year to award prizes of 1,000 dollars to authors of especially meritorious unpublished monographs in the humanities, social sciences and physical and biological sciences is being continued for 1960. The final date for receipt of manuscripts is October 1. A new Inter-American Program for Advanced Training in Applied Social Sciences is being sponsored with the cooperation of government of Mexico, the Instituto Nacional Indigenista de Mexico and other official organizations.

The article presents minutes of the annual meeting of the Rural Sociological Society, 1959. The meeting was called to order by President Harold Hoffsommer with the following Committee members present: Ward W. Bauder, Olaf F. Larson, Charles R. Hoffer, Walter C. McKain, Herbert F. Lionberger, and Charles F. Ramsey, Managing Editor. President Hoffsommer announced the appointment of William Reeder, Chairman, and Stephen Brower as an Auditing Committee, and Leland Tate and Francina Nolan as members of a Resolutions Committee with the former as chairman. A motion by C. R. Hoffer that the annual meeting of the Rural Sociological Society for 1960 be held at Pennsylvania State College on August 25-27, was seconded and unanimously approved. Larson indicated that he had been advised by the appropriate New York State authorities that the Society would not be required to register as a charitable organization in the State of New York. However, he stressed that it would be necessary for future officers of the Society to refrain from any activity that could be construed as fund raising, to maintain this position. Lionberger reported that action to establish tax-exempt status of the Society with the Internal Revenue Service had been taken but that no notification of action taken by the latter had been obtained. Three proposals by the Board of Editors to the Executive Committee were considered.

This article reports on the formation of the World Congress that aims to deal with the problems of human infertility. In October 1951, an International Fertility Association was organized at a meeting in Brazil, and this international association, jointly with the American Society for the Study of Sterility, decided to call a World Congress on Fertility and Sterility. This First World Congress was held in New York in May 1953. It was called together primarily to provide an opportunity for students of the subject on the clinical and research levels to exchange information and to correlate procedures, techniques, and therapies available for the care of the infertile couple. The popularity of the congress is evidenced by the fact that it was attended by delegates from every continent. The Program Committee of the congress recognized that a conference dealing with the problems of human fertility must concern itself in part with the general social and demographic aspects of national birth rates and population growths. Most of the scientific papers and the discussions of the congress dealt with the physical and organic aspects of infertility. New techniques were described and new methods of diagnosis and therapy were discussed.

The article focuses on the joint meeting of the New York Neurological Society and the New York Academy of Medicine, Section of Neurology and Psychiatry, which was held last November. The general topic was psychiatry and the criminal law, and the psychiatric aspect was set forth in a paper by Dr. Bernard Glueck. He was followed by Professor Jerome Michael of Columbia whose paper was devoted to the legal aspect. Discussion followed in which Judge Cornelius F. Collins, Dr. Foster Kennedy, James G. Wallace, Dr. Ramsay Hunt, Robert H. Elder, Dr. Israel Strauss and Dr. William A. White participated.

The initially favorable impact of the assets that an agency puts into the service of children placed in foster care diminishes over time. This was indicated by a five-year study involving seventy agencies in the New York City area. Analysis of the findings points up implications for future planning of foster care services. This article presents proceedings of the 55th annual meeting of the American Sociological Association held at the Statler Hilton Hotel, New York City from August 28-31, 1960. The first meeting of the 1960 Council was called to order on August 28, 1960 by Vice-President Wilbert Moore. Members of the 1960 Council present in the meeting included Reirihard Bendix, John Clausen, W. Fred Cottrell, Robert Faris, William Goode, George Homans, Rex Hopper, Seymour Lipset, Charles Loomis, Walter Martin, Robert Merton, Wilbert Moore, Charles Page, and John Riley. Three resolutions pertaining to various aspects of the certification problem were received from the Ohio Valley Sociological Society and it was voted that these matters be studied by an ad hoc committee consisting of Talcott Parsons, Robert Merton and Guy Swanson and their findings reported to the first meeting of the 1961 Council. Regarding the site for 1963 meetings, the Council reaffirmed the earlier decision to meet on the West Coast with the detailed arrangements as to place and facilities being left in the hands of the president-elect for that meeting, the Secretary and the Executive Officer.

Rural Settlement Institute, founded in 1941, announces its incorporation, under the laws of New York, which took place in December 1948. The name of the institute has been changed to Group Fanning Research Institute. The activities of the institute include field studies, contacts with interested groups, grants-in-aid, and publications. A new non-profit research organization, known as Rand Corp., has recently been established with head-quarters at Santa Monica, California. The objective of the corporation, as set forth in its charter, is to further and promote scientific, educational, and charitable purposes, all for the public welfare and security of the U.S. Eastern Sociological Society held its nineteenth annual meeting on April 23 and 24, 1945, at the Hotel Commodore, New York City. Over three hundred persons were in attendance. The first morning session was devoted to reports on research projects.

The article presents information about various events held as of March 1927 and upcoming events for the year. It informs about a dinner in honor of professor John B. Clarke of the Columbia University. The fifty-fourth annual meeting of the National Conference of Social Work will be held at Des Moines, Iowa, May 11-18, 1927. A Friedrich List Gesellschaft was organized recently in Germany, with offices at 121 Neckarstrasse, Stuttgart. Seven lectures were held at the University of Chicago in January and February to commemorate the sesquicentennial of the publication of The Wealth of Nations. A meeting of the Stable Money Association was held in New York, February 8, at which Professor John R. Commons spoke on "The Federal Reserve System and Price Stabilization." The publisher, Julius Springer, has issued a comprehensive catalogue of the publications of that house dealing with economic subjects. The British Library of Political and Economic Science has recently purchased a collection of many hundreds of letters, documents and manual scripts written by or to John Stuart Mill and Miss Helen Taylor, his step-daughter.

The article presents new briefs on specific chapters of the Institute of Management Sciences. One of the briefs describes information on speakers at meetings for the Northern Ohio Chapter. Another brief mentions the planned topics of several joint meetings of the Delaware Valley Chapter. This articles presents news briefs related to developments in the field of social science research as of March 1962. Announcement has been made of the formation of a new New York-based research firm Certified Statistics Associates which "is prepared to work with managerial executives and research directors in evaluating documentation on current projects and to originate experimental designs for new projects." Raymond Franzen is the principal associate of the agency. Washington-based Bureau of Social Science Research Inc. has announced two new research projects. A "study of the characteristics of the users of the Information Searching Service in Metallurgy at Western Reserve University" is being conducted by Ivor Wayne and Albert D. Biderman. An analysis of the graduate training of 1958 college graduates, conducted by Laura M. Sharp, will explore three areas: "the patterns of timing for graduate study following graduation; relationships between undergraduate major and minor fields and the field of graduate study; and proportion of graduates from each school and/or type of school enrolling for advanced education."

The article presents information about the Fourth Annual Conference on Public Opinion Research that took place in Ithaca, New York from June 19-22, 1949. The year 1948-49 was a crucial one in the brief history of public opinion research. Meetings of the American Association for Public Opinion Research at Cornell University were the first full gathering of the professionals in the field of opinion research after the November, 1948 setback. The most salient feature of the Ithaca meetings was the obvious determination of the conferees gathered there to leave nothing undone which could lead to greater perfection, greater reliability, more meaningful interpretations of the fruits of their research labors. The article also contains a condensation of proceedings of their conference documents which in a variety of ways points up directions in which the academicians on one side and the commercial practitioners on the other must continue to work together for the common development of the profession.

An account is presented of a center for the provision of ambulatory comprehensive medical care on New York's Lower East Side. This consumer presentation bears on questions of developing more national health care systems on a local, regional or national basis, as well as models for consumer participation in health policy. The Section on Methodology held its first business and council meetings at the time of the American Sociological Association meetings in New York City last August. At the annual meeting last year in New York the Section sponsored a panel discussion and two other sessions. Three sessions have been planned for the coming annual meeting. The Publications Committee was requested to obtain additional information on the cost of publishing a journal on methodology. Criteria for membership in the Section were discussed at the annual meeting and it was decided that any voting member of the Association who pays Section dues shall be admitted to the Section. There was also discussion of the function of the Section and some question as to its constitutionality. The present officer of the section are Daniel O. Price, Chairman, Robert F. Mcginnis, Secretary-Treasurer. The committees that have been appointed for the year 1960-61 were Program Committee, headed by Robert McGinnis; Nominating Committee, headed by Leslie Kish; and Publications Committee, headed by William S. Robinson.

The article reports on the achievements and progress of the American Accounting Association. One of the impressive accomplishments of the association was the marked increase in membership. The widespread interest of professional practitioners in the work, the aims and objectives, the publications, and the activities of the association in the held of accounting education has been gratifying. Many new teachers at the college level have been added to the membership roles. To all of these new members the association extends a warm and cordial welcome and a standing invitation to participate actively in furthering the purposes which are set forth in our by-laws and statement of purposes. The program of the annual meeting gave a glimpse into still another new undertaking, namely, the development of standards rating in the field of undergraduate and graduate study of accounting. It is hoped that extension of this project may become a continuing activity of the association.

The article provides information on the plans of the American Sociological Association for its annual meeting in New York in 1973. The Program Committee for the New York Annual Meeting, consisting of President-Elect Mirra Komarovsky, Vice-President-Elect Raymond W. Mack, Secretary J. Milton Yinger, James E. Blackwell, Allen D. Grimshaw, Matilda W. Riley, and Morris Zelditch, have planned two featured series for the 1973 program. The first of the series of Refresher Lectures on current developments in selected fields of sociology. The Refresher Lecture is intended as an experiment in intra-disciplinary rapprochement in a period of growing specialization. In contrast to advanced workshops for specialists, the lectures are designed for persons not primarily identified in their research or teaching with the particular area. Each lecture will deal with theological and empirical trends in the field, changing foci of concern, substantive findings, ideological polemics, lacunae, and the like. Following the lecture, each session will have a scheduled discussion. The Refresher Lectures will include, sociolinguistics, deviance and disorganization, ethnomethodology and cognitive theory, formal organization, systems analysis, trends in social psychological theory, exchange theory, computer simulation, and development and modernization.
