The present article is by way of a report of a grant by the Russel Sage Foundation-not exactly an evaluation report, since the authors involvement in the event would make them suspect as judges, but rather a personal report of what occurred and the meaning that can, or should, be attached thereto. The Public Relations Committee appealed for cooperation from paper-readers, asking them in advance whether they would want a press interview in Miami. The paper by Robert Parke, Jr. and Paul Click, discussing the "marriage squeeze" resulting from the post-war baby boom, led all others in amount of space given to it. The American Sociological Association (ASA) therefore, both in its administration and in its membership, should have little concern for improving the "image" of sociology in the public eye, but it should have great concern for increasing the level of sociological information among persons outside, as well as within, colleges and universities. The fact is, however, the ASA structure has no device for handling communication with the public in more than fortuitous ways. As long as "press coverage" at conventions begins only a few weeks before the event and ends promptly at the last session, it is doubtful that success in this realm can ever be more than smooth public relations.

This article presents information on congresses and conventions on various issues held in the U.S. as of December 1916. The Twenty-ninth Annual Meeting of the American Economic Association will be held at Columbus, Ohio, December 27-30, 1916. The American Sociological Society, the American Statistical Association, and the American Association for Labor Legislation will meet at the same time and place. A meeting of the teachers of economics, sociology, and commerce, in the state of Iowa was held at the State University in Iowa City on October 6 and 7, 1916. On Wednesday evening, December 27, there will be a joint meeting of the four associations at which the annual presidents' addresses will be given. The subject for discussion at the Thursday morning session is "The Problem of Land Ownership." researcher Richard T. Ely will read the leading paper. On Thursday afternoon there will be papers by researcher H. C. Taylor on "Two Dimensions of Economic Productivity" and by researcher George von Tungein on "The Results of Some Rural Surveys in Iowa."

The article focuses on proceedings of the 10th annual conference of the American Association for Public Research that held at Madison, Wisconsin-based Hotel Loraine, from April 13-16, 1955. Several papers discussed in this conference include Stuart Dodd, director of the Washington Public Opinion Laboratory (WPOL), who presented a paper entitled "Formulas for Spreading Opinions-A Report of Controlled Experiments on Leaflet Messages in Project Revere", in which he described the origin, purposes and findings of the three-year study which WPOL had conducted for the Air Force. The article also presents other paper by speaker Samuel W. Blizzard who reviewed his experiences in a current theological seminar project designed to explore the use of social science in training parish ministers, and, more specifically, to inquire into how the sociologist-faculty member can help in this training. Blizzard described the milieu in which a social scientist operates as a theological seminary faculty member, noting that seminars course emphasis is away from the social sciences, the theological party line must be understood by the incoming sociologist faculty member.

Information about the topics discussed during the Milan Conference held on September 12 to 17, 1955 is presented. The conference, entitled "The Future of Freedom," has been attended by writers, politicians, journalists, and university teachers. It has talked on the process of breaking the encrustations of liberal and socialist thought, to discover their common ground, and to push forward with the task of formulating more realistic and more inclusive ideas on the conditions of the free society.

The article briefs on events and other happenings taking place in the country under a section of "News and Notes" of the journal "Public Opinion Quarterly." The twenty-ninth annual conference of the American Association for Public Opinion Research will be held May 30 to June 4, 1974, on the theme of "understanding the United States." In another development, a two-year project now underway at the University of Illinois' Survey Research Laboratory will collate and synthesize present knowledge of consumer behavior gathered from various social science disciplines. The project will solicit papers from experts representing specific disciplines, and these will be reviewed and discussed at a small invitational conference prior to their publication. The Institute for Survey Research at Temple University has completed a mail survey of members of the American Psychological Association's Consumer Psychology division, with the aim of developing a more systematic understanding of ethical problems encountered by consumer psychologists.

This section presents the final report of the secretary of the American Economic Association for the annual meetings of the Allied Social Science Associations, held in New Orleans, Louisiana, on December 27-29, 1971. The final report indicated a total registration of 5,913 persons. The net income from the meeting was $20,381.18. The share of the American Economic Association, based on registration figures, was $13,383. In accordance with a resolution passed at the annual meeting of December 28, 1971, the 1972 National Convention Committee arranged for day-care facilities at Toronto and publicized them in the preregistration materials mailed to members. Demand for such facilities was negligible. At the 1973 meetings, the National Convention Committee will arrange for baby sitters but not day care. In recent years, a volume of abstracts of the papers to be given at the annual meetings was published, mailed to those members preregistering, and given to others at the time of registration. Since there was doubt about the value of the abstracts, the 1972 volume was sold at the meetings for one dollar a copy instead of being given to all registrants. Sales totaled less than one thousand copies. To date, no complaints have been received in this office because the abstracts were not mailed to those who preregistered. It appears that the abstracts cost more than they were worth, and they probably will be discontinued.

William Liu of Portland University will join the Sociology Department at University of Notre Dame as associate professor of Sociology in September 1961. Thomas Coffee has resigned from Rosary College to accept a position at St. John's University. Clement S. Mihanovich received a grant from the American Association for Middle East Studies to conduct a Conference on Middle East Studies at Saint Louis University, November 3, 4, 5, 1961. He will conduct a tour of the Middle East in the summer of 1962 that will include Paris, Rome, Athens, Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Israel. George Yahn of University of San Diego presented papers at the Fifth Congress of the International Academy of Legal Medicine at Vienna, Austria.

This paper presents the text of a revised version of a paper read at the Nineteenth Annual Convention of the American Catholic Sociological Society at the Trinity College in Washington, D. C. on December 28-30, 1957, recent trends in industrial sociology. The cultivation of specialized areas within the total field has been one of the dominant features of American sociology. Speculation regarding the development of such sub-disciplines might legitimately conclude that they arise as logical extensions of a progressive cultivation of sociological knowledge. In fact, their development does not seem to take this course. As a matter of observation, it is in those areas where problems are recognized as important and pressing for solution that specialities develop and flourish. There are areas, which it might be logical to cultivate, where the impetus of perceived problems has not arisen to spur activity. Once a speciality has arisen as a result in this interest in current problems, its pattern of development manifests a curious tendency. Study and research tend to go beyond the problems around which they originated and the sub-discipline develops objectives and a rationale which lead it beyond the solution of current problems.

The article presents information about the 12th International Conference on the Sociology of Religion. The general theme of the conference "Contemporary Metamorphoses of Religion," was interpreted more as dealing with organizational change, including the emergence of "new" religious movements and attitude changes, than with any basic transformation in the current conceptions of the nature of religion or of religious faith. The plenary sessions were carefully planned and conducted in a very formal way marked by procedures of protocol, written requests for "interventions," like questions and comments by others than the announced participants. The only free wheeling spontaneous participation of the sort familiar to us occurred in the much smaller contributed papers sessions. Spontaneity was, unfortunately, limited even in these sessions by linguistic factors. There was one area, according to several European scholars, in which the conference may have presented a somewhat misleading picture of European academic life to the North American participants. Very little attention was paid to the debate between the Marxists and the non Marxists which is so much a part of daily European academicia.

The article presents the proceedings of the Ohio Valley Sociological Society Council Meeting, Held on Thursday, April 27, 1971, held at the Cleveland-Sheraton Hotel, Cleveland, Ohio. Resolutions concerning deceased members of the Ohio Valley Sociological Society should be published as obituaries in the Sociological Focus. Physician Olmstead reported for the publications committee. He indicated that the publications committee was currently seeking a new editor for Sociological Focus. He also reported on the number of papers submitted in the undergraduate and graduate paper competition. At the undergraduate level the committee has selected two CO. President Useem then introduced the topic of convention development It was moved that the principle of establishing an office of executive secretary, and/or business manager (which would be ad hoc for now) be approved. Such an executive secretary and/or business manager will work on the managerial issues of the society. The resolution was passed. The executive committee will designate an acting executive secretary.

This conference brought together over 70 social scientists from the Kenyan, Tanzanian, and Ugandan constituent Colleges of the University of East Africa (with visitors from Zambia, Ethiopia, Sierra Leone, and Rhodesia) for their annual inter-disciplinary, or rather trans-disciplinary, deliberations. Why ‘trans-disciplinary’? Because the historians discussed nationalism, politics, and church movements; political scientists discoursed on economics, rural settlement, agriculture, and education; sociologists criticised political decisions and economic criteria which hampered their investigations into resettlement programmes; and the economists, while speaking mostly about economics, were represented at virtually all panels, apparently to guard their disciplinary preserve against intrusions, presumptions and, in one case, elision with political science. The article presents the proceedings of the annual business meeting of the Ohio valley sociological society. Don Olmstead reported for the Publications Committee. He reported on the search for a new editor, the maintenance of the publication, Sociological Focus at the University of Akron, and the exploration of future publication possibilities between the OVSS and other societies. Whereas the innovative and sematic scheme of the program produced interesting and provocative papers and discussions. Be it resolved that Chairman Marvin Olson and Program Committee members Elizabeth Mullins, and John Scanzoni be recognized for their efforts and that their universities be so informed. Whereas, the three year term of office for the following officers of the Ohio Valley Sociological Society has expired, be it resolved that the new officers and membership recognize the extraordinary efforts and contributions made by: Shailer Thomas, Secretary; Charles Westie, Treasurer; John Lindquist Editor of Sociological Focus.

The article presents information on recent developments related to rural sociology in the U.S. Homer L. Hitt resigned as head of the Departments of Sociology and Rural Sociology and as associate dean of the Graduate School to become dean of Louisiana State University at New Orleans, Louisiana. On April 28-29, 1958, the first annual "Louisiana Conference on the Aging" was held on the campus. This conference was sponsored jointly by the Department of Sociology and the Louisiana Commission on the Aging. Outstanding scholars in gerontology were brought to the campus for the two-day session. Evan T. Peterson has joined the staff of the Division of Sociology and Rural Life, Mississippi State University, as assistant sociologist and assistant professor of sociology and rural life. The twentieth annual meeting of the Ohio Valley Sociological Society was held on May 1-2, 1958, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Host for the meeting was the Department of Sociology, University of Cincinnati. The 1959 meeting of the Society will be held in Columbus, Ohio.

At the Sixth World Congress of Sociology in Evian, France, September 1966, the first international sessions on the sociology of the military, war and revolution were held. The author had the privilege to be chairman of a working group on "Militarism and the Professional Military Man," which brought together representatives from Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Soviet Union, and the United States, South America and the Far East. The actualities of war or revolution in the developing nations did not block out the implications of militarism in advanced societies. The sociological aspects of militarism in West Germany were realistically and soberly assessed by Wido Mosen from the University of Frankfurt. Examination of the fundamental issues of militarism quickly transcended old fashioned notions of militarism and military dictatorship and focused on the real problems of controlling the military profession under a variety of social and political systems. Social recruitment must he linked to prestige in the effort to explore the socio-political position of the military in contemporary society. Data presented at the conference confirmed the decline in prestige of the military profession in recent years in advanced industrialized societies.

The article presents a study that examined the effects of divisibility of payoff on confederative behavior. In a recent study, the authors focused on the social contact process as a significant aspect of confederative behavior. The social contact process discussed occurs during a transitory phase of group formation when the potential group members move from an independent, non-interacting state into an interdependent state of interaction, The relative frequencies of social contacts were used to test hypotheses about coalition formation. The major result reported by the authors was that, in a political convention situation of the type used by the researchers, individuals tend to express a preference for the "weaker" of a pair of candidates as a coalition partner. These results were established by means of a pencil and paper instrument (the Political Decision Questionnaire) but support the results of other investigators in experimentally constituted groups. In a small group, this preference for the individual with the smallest amount of resources (the weakest member, W) leads to an exclusion of the strongest group member from most coalitions and consequent payoffs.

The activities of the International Sociological Association during the past year have centered around plans for the Fourth World Congress of Sociology to be held in Perugia, Italy, probably from September 8 to 15, 1959. There are to be three sections as follows: sociology in its social context, the application of sociological knowledge and developments in sociological method. All papers are by invitation in the first section; and the third section is broken down into ten seminars, each chairman of which will prepare a paper to which invited discussants will react. In second section, papers may be offered for consideration to the chairmen of the sub-sections. The Social Science Research Council is administering a grant from the grant-making foundation Carnegie Corp. of New York for travel grants to international meetings. The committee in charge seeks persons who by their presence, participation or organizing services, will make major contribution to the success of a conference; and scholars who by their attendance will gain ideas and contacts that will advance their own research.

The article analyzes the function of women sociologists at conventions. The manifest functions of sociology conventions are (1) to present scholarly papers, (2) to discuss the profession's business, (3) to exchange job information, and (4) to hear about the activities of other departments. The convention's latent functions include seeing friends, gossiping and assessing one's status, i.e. finding out if one's stock is rising or falling on the professional market. A female sociologist is uniquely qualified to meet the psychic and intellectual needs of the male conventioneer. Study upon study has shown that the woman generalizes her role in the family of socio-emotional leader, to other institutions. As a colleague, the woman sociologist is a task expert who has been trained to participate in the same world of ideas and research as her male counterpart. She can understand and judge the worth of an idea or a piece of research. She can also reward achievement. But as a woman, she has learned how to distribute love, support, encouragement and other expressive verbal rewards. It is this combination of proven ability in the expressive area coupled with instrumental skills, which places such a premium on interaction with the female sociologist.

The article presents information about the 1964 Annual Meeting of the Association to be held at the Sheraton Mt. Royal Hotel, Montreal, Canada, during August-September, 1964. The article provides a list of the sessions and the presiding chairmen by the 1964 Program Committee. For each field in which the Association has a Section, the program chairman has been appointed by President George C. Homans and the Program Committee in consultation with the Section Chairman. Lortie, etc. In order to provide growing membership with the widest opportunity to participate in the annual program, each person is allowed to read only one paper if he is sole author, by a long-standing rule of the Association, and to contribute to two sessions only if he is joint author in each case or is a chairman or discussant in one case.

The American Catholic Sociological Society held its first annual convention at the Morrison Hotel, Chicago, Illinois from December 26-28. There were more than twenty-five papers and discussions at the meetings. Some of the topics considered were: the teaching of introductory, problems, and advanced courses, rural problems; social welfare; family; political sociology; and research. The Society also held a meeting on December 30 at Detroit, Michigan where many members of the ACSS were attending the annual meetings of the American Sociological Society. According to another information the National Conference on Family Relations will hold three regional meetings in the early months of 1939: one at New Orleans, from February 24-25; one at Chicago in March; and one in New York City. The first meeting at New York last September was a great success. Those participating agreed unanimously that the organization should be continued and put upon a permanent basis.

The Southern Sociological Society held its Seventeenth Annual Meeting at the Atlanta Biltmore, Atlanta, Georgia, March 25-27, 1954. King, University of Mississippi; President- Elect, Irwin T. Sanders, University of Kentucky; First Vice-President, Edgar T. Thompson, Duke University; Second Vice-President, Lorin A. Thompson, University of Virginia; Secretary-Treasurer, Melvin J. Williams, Stetson University. James S. Himes, North Carolina College, and Meyer F. Nimkoff, Florida State University, were elected to serve three-year terms on the Executive Committee; C. A. McMahan, Maxwell Air Force Base, was elected to serve out a vacated two-year term as a member of the Executive Committee; and William E. Cole, University of Tennessee, was elected representative to the American Sociological Society.

This article presents information on several events organized by the Southwestern Social Science Association, to be held in 1952. The Association will hold its annual convention for 1952 in Dallas, Texas, on April 11 and 12. General headquarters for the convention will be at the Baker Hotel, Commerce and Akard. This article focuses on reviews of the symposiums related to National Commission on the Causes and Prevention of Violence. Some of the reports are: "The Politics of Protest: Violent Aspect of Protest and Confrontation," prepared by Jerome Skolnick; "Law and Order Reconsidered," prepared by James S. Campbell. Given the recently accelerated scholarly attention to social conflict and violence, a systematic codification of current knowledge of empirical patterns and of competing theoretical interpretations would itself be a contribution of very considerable magnitude. No social science discipline is unrepresented in the volumes under review; and there are contributions by representatives of all major psychological perspectives and of several biological sciences. Lawyers have played important roles in the work of the commission. The list of consultants an witnesses includes dozens of the nation's leading figures in government, in industry, in public service agencies, and in the academy. With such an eminent collection of experts and wise elder statesmen, it might seem reasonable to hope for an encyclopedia of violence which could stand as a monument to committed scholarship combined with intelligent public concern.

American Council of Learned Societies offers a limited number of grants-in-aid (not to exceed $300) for actual expenses of research. Applicants must have a doctor's degree or its equivalent, and be a citizen of the United States or Canada, or be permanently employed or domiciled therein. The grants may be used for travel, technical, or secretarial assistance, or material (but not books). The Catholic Anthropological Conference held its fifteenth annual meeting at Rosary College, River Forest, Illinois, March 26, 1940, sponsored by the department of sociology and social work, under the direction of Sister Mary Henry. A spring meeting of the Central New York Sociologists was held at Cornell University on April 19, when George A. Lundberg addressed the Cornell Sociology Club on "Measurement in Sociology." This was followed by a dinner at Willard Straight Hall, after which the discussion of Lundberg's address and matters concerning the organization of the American Sociological Society ensued. About 40 were present representing nine universities and colleges in Central New York.

The article presents information about several current happening related to sociology in the U.S. According to information the American Council of Learned Societies is prepared to extend assistance in publishing a limited number of meritorious works in the field of the humanities written by American scholars. It invites its constituent societies to propose books they deem suitable for assistance, but reserves the right to consider works submitted by others if the executive committee has accepted them for consideration. Works proposed for publication must be complete in themselves, preferably the results of constructive research presented in the form of volumes of conventional size. The other information is that the seventh annual meeting of the Eastern Sociological Conference was held in from April 18-19, with over a hundred persons in attendance. The central topic of the Conference was social theory, and social order. The majority of sessions centered around a discussion of capitalism, fascism, socialism, and communism as divergent social orders.

The article presents the report of the official act of the American Economic Association. The article presents a summary of the year's operations, with comments and interpretations concerning the Association's activities. The second meeting of the 1957 Executive Committee was held at the Westchester Country Club, Rye, New York, on March 29-30, 1957. The managing director B.F. Haley presented suggestions for the regular replacement on the Editorial Board and all names were acceptable to the Executive Committee. The final panel is to be presented to the Executive Committee at the December meeting. Haley expressed a desire to send out a questionnaire to 300-500 people to get opinions and criticism of the various aspects of the American Economic Review. He outlined a proposal to have two survey articles a year for a period of four years, to be published as part of the Review or as separates, the author paid an honorarium. The President was authorized to submit a proposal to the Rockefeller Foundation for the sum of $13,000 to finance this series of survey articles, this proposal to be drawn up by the Editor in consultation with the Chairman of the Committee on Research and Publication.

The article presents a symposium on family and kin ties in Great Britain and their social implication. Kinship in Britain, pervasive, intangible, still largely unstudied, with its significance either not appreciated or in danger of being overestimated, such was the background to the conference on family and kin ties in Britain and their social implications, that was held in London under the joint auspices of the British Sociological Association and the Association of Social Anthropologists. One finding of the conference was the decision by the British Sociological Association to set up a small Working Party to pursue the subject further, in particular by discussion of work in progress. One major question discussed was methods in kinship study. Exchanges of view seem to indicate that methods and techniques in vogue at present are reasonably satisfactory. As regards substantial propositions regarding kinship in Britain, it is clear that yet, Britain lacks adequate body of broad comparative data.

The article presents information on the Fifth Visayas-Mindanao Convention of the Philippine Sociological Society which was held during May 1-2, 1967 at the Victorias Milling Co. Around fifty delegates from all over the Philippines attended. Each speaker was given thirty minutes to read his paper, after which a thirty minute open forum followed. Richard Stone's "Private Transitory Ownership of Public Property: A Key to Understanding Urban Behavior," elicited mixed comments and reactions toward the Filipino's conception of public property. Problems of integration or assimilation of cultural minorities especially that of the Chinese were also discussed at the conference. Other questions centered on the rigor of the methods, techniques and tools used in the gathering and analysis of data to support the findings presented in the different papers. The question pertaining to the site of the next convention was not decided upon. Among the places being considered are Iloilo City, Cebu City and Baguio City.

The article presents information regarding the change of guard in the editorial board. Editorial staffs are all indebted to the former editor, Meyer F. Nimkoff and his staff, for the way in which they have kept the journal both interesting and professionally useful. The present editorial staff includes some who have carried over, as well as several new appointments, and the present editor is appreciative of them both. It is especially gratifying that Nimkoff has consented to continue serving, this time as a member of the editorial board. With the exceptions of its regular features, this issue of the journal "Marriage and Family Living," is devoted entirely to reporting the papers and discussions from a special "Family Research Conference" held in Chicago, during October 31 to November 3, 1956. This conference was conducted under the joint sponsorship of the Elizabeth McCormick Memorial Fund and the National Council on Family Relations. Conference papers were distributed in advance so that participants could study them ahead of time and come prepared to move beyond the formal presentations and on to points requiring further exploration.

The article focuses on the report by the representatives of the American Economic Association submitted in December 1951. According to the report the Social Science Research Council at its September meeting had sponsored a comprehensive discussion of areas of economic research in which the council might fruitfully concentrate its energies. At the council's annual meeting in September, 1953, it devoted a session to the progress which bas been made in the last two years. It is clear that the council is pushing ahead vigorously in several areas of great concern to economists. The Committee on Economic Growth has been active in promoting research in this area both in the U.S. and abroad. It is planning a series of four small conferences to be held in 1954 dealing with the topics, the influence of cities on economic growth and on cultural change in underdeveloped countries, economic criteria in the selection of investment plans affecting economic development, strategic factors in periods of rapid economic growth, and entrepreneurship and economic growth. The Council established during the year a new Committee on Agricultural Economics which is actively at work.

The article presents information on an unpremeditated symposium on the economic theory of Clarence E. Ayres. The article argues that Ayres and the Tower on the campus of the University of Texas are two of the dominant features of the academic landscape in the Southwest. Both have been centers of controversy, ranging in intensity from mild to boiling. It seems that few who have considered either have escaped partisan reaction for, or against. The article informs that this issue of the "Southwestern Social Science Quarterly" deals with four examinations of Ayresian economic theory, which range from bitter attack to capable defense, with a note of mildness in between. Together, they should give the reader a fairly complete view of this scholar's ideas. These papers were not solicited, and there was no idea of a symposium on Ayresian theory, when the first of the four, that by Jack Robertson was received. This paper was soon followed by that of Manuel Gottlieb. Both were highly recommended for publication by economists respected for their competence in the field.

The article reports that plans for the Eleventh Congress of the International Penal and Penitentiary Commission to be held in Berlin in the summer of 1935 are being completed. The Commission will meet to arrange the final program for the 1935 meeting, which promises to be one of exceptional interest and importance to students of criminology. The practice followed at these meetings is to lay out an agenda a year in advance of the meeting, to invite competent people from all of the adhering nations to prepare papers discussing the subjects assigned to them. These papers are submitted to so-called rapporteurs, who digest the contents and summarize them, for the benefit of those attending the Congress. These digests are translated into the several languages and are discussed during the week of the Congress at section meetings and form the basis for resolutions to be adopted at the general sessions of the Congress, thus crystalizing the consensus of opinion of the representatives of the various countries on topics of major importance.

Two business meetings were held at the Chicago convention from September 2-5, 1959, with Verne Wright as the new chairman. Roland L. Warren is the vice-chairman and chairman-elect. Plans for the 1960 meetings in New York include two sessions on the Sociology of Community Development with Warren reading a major paper at the first session on "What Theory for Successful Community Development ?" The second session will include papers on case studies which summarize and generalize on "Planned Developments" for two metropolitan communities.

At its February, 1971 annual meeting, the American Educational Research Association sponsored several symposia on the present state of social science research on education. One of these centered on sociology and education. Three papers were to discuss the present state and promise of major lines of inquiry in the sociology of education, followed by commentary. There was no intention to propose through the papers or their topics an intellectual organization for the sociology of education, the topics rather were to deal with areas of research in which there was a considerable literature and lively current activity. Philip Foster was the principal discussant.

The Tenth Annual Meeting of the Pacific Sociological Society was held at the University of California, Berkeley, December 28 to 30, 1938. The conference opened with a luncheon at noon Wednesday, when Constantine Panunzio, University of California at Los Angeles, spoke of his experiences in Italy. Prepared papers and discussions given at the four sessions devoted to the program were, Elon H. Moore, University of Oregon, "Patterns of Age, Sex and Direction in Net White Mobility Streams," discussions by Carl F. Reuss, State College of Washington and Paul Walter, University of New Mexico. Papers will be published in the March-April issue of the journal "Sociology and Social Research," as volume 10 the Proceedings of the Pacific Sociological Society. Glenn B. Hoover, Mills College was elected president for the year 1939. Other newly elected officers are Richard T. LaPiere, Stanford University, first vice-president, David E. Henley, Whittier College, second vice-president; Carl E. Dent, State College of Washington, Third vice-president, Paul H. Landis, State College of Washington, Secretary-Treasurer and Emory S. Bogardus, University of Southern California.

Miss Bessie E. Browne of the University of Missouri, President of The National Students' Sociological Conference, 1936, extends greetings to all students of sociology, both graduate and undergraduate, and urges them to attend the Conference which, this year, will be held in connection with the annual meeting of the American Sociological Society, in Chicago, December 18 to 30, 1936. Browne writes: The student meeting will convene for two sessions, December 28 and 29 in the morning. This gives the remainder of the time for students to hear programs of the American Sociological Society and to see places of interest in Chicago, Illinois. A very interesting program of papers and research projects and other activities is being planned. In addition to the main program of papers and projects, the contacts with other students of sociology, and the splendid opportunity of attending sessions of the American Sociological Society" and hearing and meeting the outstanding leaders in the field of sociology, there arc other plans to make your trip to the conference very much worth while.

The article reports that the Administration Committee has cancelled the meeting of the American Sociological Association which was to have been held in Cleveland, Ohio on December 29-31, 1948, in view of the urgent pleas of the Office of Defense Transportation (ODT) that civilian travel be curtailed between December 18 and January 10. Similar action has been taken by most of the other Social Science Societies which were planning to meet. Last summer ODT encouraged the association to go ahead with its meetings, but the transportation situation has now changed radically. ODT has issued a request to all Federal agencies asking that they cancel leaves involving travel from December 18 to January 10, and asking that no meetings be called by government agencies during that period. This would seriously interfere with the program and the attendance of government employees at the meeting.

Marquette University, Wisconsin, is celebrating the twentieth anniversary of the founding of its social science department. The fifteenth annual meeting of the Catholic Anthropological Conference will be held Tuesday, April 26, at Rosary College, River Forest, Illinois. The next annual meeting of the American Sociological Society will be held in Chicago, Illinois, December 27-29, 1940. A clearing-house committee on personnel was appointed at the last convention to secure some means for the effective spread of information on vocational opportunities. The Central States Probation and Parole Conference will hold its annual meeting at the Sherman Hotel, Chicago, on April 21-25. The National Catholic Conference on Family Life will hold its annual meeting at the College of New Rochelle, New Rochelle, New York, on the feast of Saint Joseph, on April 10. The fourth annual meeting of the Mid-West Sociological Society will be held at the Hotel Kirkwood, Des Moines, Iowa, on April 18-20.

Another book "The Poor: Culture of Poverty or Poverty of Culture," edited by J. Alan Winter. A seminar on Religious Intermarriage will be held on Sunday, December 26 at Warwick, Philadelphia. One of the problems in the interreligious research is the nature and extent of interreligious marriage. A discussion on this Interreligious Conflict in Northern Ireland, will be held on December 27, in Philadelphia. An examination of the nature, background and current status of the interreligious conflict in Norther Ireland together with a discussion of some of its effects. In the Los Angeles: International Congress, problems in the social description of early Christianity is discussed.

The article comments on trends in teaching the sociology of development in Great Britain. The way that a subject is taught and the kinds of development which are occurring within it give a strong clue as to the direction of academic thought in that subject. For this reason, a discussion of how the sociology of development is taught in Great Britain tells about more than the mere teaching of an option in some sociology degrees. It also tells something about the state of sociology as a discipline and supplies with some indication of the likely developments in that discipline in the near future. Following the British Sociological Association annual conference in 1972, a survey was carried out with a view to ascertaining exactly what was being taught in that slot in the curriculum called sociology of development, comparative sociology of developing societies, or modernization and development. All the institutions of Great Britain which had been represented at the B.S.A. conference were surveyed by means of a postal questionnaire.
