It explains the three kinds of communications that will be published: Program Registrations, Software Abstracts, and Software Articles, either theoretical or describing working programs. Detailed instructions regarding content and format are given. In anticipation of a computerized software retrieval system for psychophysiology, it also contains coding instructions for authors so they may identify their papers by subject, organ system, machine, and language prior to submission. Tins paper describes several problems that have appeared as a computer system of content analysis has been used in research on social interaction. In addition, prospective contributions of such computer systems are also indicated in the hope that evaluations of the method will include the consideration of both issues. The particular system called The General Inquirer was developed by Stone and his associates at Harvard and is undoubtedly the most sophisticated computer system of content analysis and information retrieval presently available. A description of the essential features of this system will first be presented. This paper surveys the use of the computer in the humanities and fine arts, and indicates the relevance of available hardware and software for those applications areas. The first section covers (a) pattern recognition and analysis in art, architecture, music, and literature (with an emphasis upon the latter), and (b) pattern construction, or synthesis, in art, architecture, music, and language. In the second section, data representation and manipulation are described with reference to: first, transformation of the artifact into a form suitable for the computer; second, internal data storage and manipulation; and, third, output. The three types of artifacts dealt with are: aural, or auditory; visual, including both nonalphameric and alphameric forms; tactile. A discussion of data structures and of data manipulation occupies the subsection on internal data storage and manipulation, and the brief commentary on output concentrates on aural and visual modes.
