The present paper, which was presented at the Fifth (1965) International Criminological Congress in Montreal, Canada, points out difficulties that case history techniques and census tract analysis have left unsolved in trying to evaluate the contribution of family patterns, class position, and the influence of peer groups to the occurrence of juvenile delinquency. Neither method has been able to identify totally satisfactory control groups nor to collect information prior to the onset of delinquency. An alternative method which appears to come closer to solving these problems is the use of a cohort of school entrants for whom social history data is collected for delinquents and non-delinquents prior to the first official delinquent act. A partial application of this method to Negro school boys entering public schools prior to integration (1936-40) is presented. The authors suggest that the predictors found for Negro delinquency may be strongly influenced by residential segregation and by the uniformly high delinquency rates in areas where Negroes lived at this time. They suggest that early and late delinquency may well have different precipitating factors, with early delinquency reflecting family and personality disturbance, and delinquency beginning late reflecting frustrations associated with adolescence and minority group membership. The article focuses on three meetings held in various parts of the world related to various aspects of sociology and criminology. Secondly, under the programmer for the development of comparative cross-cultural research of the International Social Science Cultural (ISSC), a conference following the ISSC General Assembly, was held in Paris, France from 22 to 24 April 1965. The conference considered five main themes: the cross-cultural method; comparative analysis of historical change; comparative analysis of processes of modernization; aggregate statistical comparisons of nations; comparative sample surveys. In general terms, the purpose of the conference was to discuss recent examples of comparative research on each of the above themes and to review alternative strategies for the further advancement of comparative research on a world scale. Lastly, representatives of the six European institutes taking part in the research for a comparative study of the various forms of aid to developing countries met in Vienna, Austria from 20 to 22 September 1963 to discuss the issue.

A series of related experiments investigated the relationship between naturally established teacher expectation and IQ change. Subjects were 109 grade 1 and 2 pupils from an average socioeconomic area of Montreal. Results show no linear relationship between teacher expectation and IQ gain scores either with or without the partialing out of initial IQ scores. A significant relationship was found between negative discrepant teacher expectation and IQ change in children with superior intellectual potential. The use of IQ testing in the primary grades is discussed, and suggestions are made concerning both teacher training and in-service training programs in the light of these findings. This article provides information on the program for the 1964 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Criminology to be held from December 28 to 30, 1964 in Montreal, Quebec. Organized as a three-day conference, first day's program will be concerned with interdisciplinary programs of training and research in criminology; concluding with the annual business meeting. The second day's program will open with a continuation of papers on interdisciplinary training. This article reports that the Department of Psychiatry of McGill University, Montreal, Quebec has in the past six years initiated a mental health activity called the "Well-Being Clinic." This was an experiment in providing a public health service related to mental rather than physical health. The clinic was originated in 1954. At that time a "well-being" assessment was offered to all those registered for the health and charm course given by the Montreal Young Women Christian Association. This course consists of a series of ten lectures concerned with physical and emotional health, and with social skills in everyday living. The latter include such topics as good grooming, how to entertain, and art and music appreciation. The well-being interviews are given during the course, the appointments being made at the end of the first few lectures. Later, the clinic was included in a similar course offered by McGill University Extension Department. This course, entitled "Understanding Ourselves," consists of a series of lectures on mental health given by staff of the McGill Department of Psychiatry, and is followed in the second term by discussion groups led by psychiatrists and social workers.

The article investigates the three of the largest studies of drug use that were done among high school students in Toronto, Montreal and Halifax. The purpose of the article is to report the similarities and differences among drug use rates and concomitant variables for these three cities. The article reports the similarities and differences among the three studies in terms of: (1) gross rates of use of various drugs in the total samples, (2) rates of drug use by sex, (3) rates of drug use by grade, and (4) the frequency of use of various drugs. The results of this study show that sufficient similarities exist to expect the establishment of certain general epidemiological propositions about drug use.
