A reprint of the article "The State of Modern Painting," by Lincoln Kirstein, which appeared in the October 1948 issue of "Harper's" is presented. Several artists and art critics are now dissatisfied with the status of modern painting, in particular with abstract painting. Critics of modern art perceive abstract painting as a distortion. Modern art critics also say that most modern abstract painters lack rational craftsmanship.
