The article focuses on developments relevant to education in Great Britain as of October 1973. Nigel Grant, reader in education at the University of Edinburgh, joined the Editorial Board of "Comparative Education" magazine. The eight session of the Standing Conference of European Ministers of Education was held in June 1973, which focused on "The Educational Needs of the 16-19 Age Group." UNESCO released its latest publication "Present Problems in the Democratization of Secondary and Higher Education." The Schools Council and the Standing Conference on University Entrance published the Working Paper 46, entitled "16-19: Growth and Response, 2. Examination Structure" and Working Paper 47, "Preparation for Degree Courses."

This paper describes the results obtained in administering a modified Terman intelligence test to 327 Greek children aged from 7 to 12 years. This article examined the drug of misuse to determine the age groups which are particularly associated with their use and abuse. To identify a particular age group abusing these particular drugs is quite difficult, since of the number of registered addicts known to the Home Office the age range is considerable. In the United Kingdom, since 1965, the suicide and accidental overdosage deaths from barbiturates has almost doubled and of the total annual drug poisonings two-thirds are due exclusively to barbiturates. The misuse of barbiturates seems to be more acute in the middle!aged who become psychologically, if not physiologically, dependent upon the drugs.

The article presents a study on the substitution of games performance for academic achievement as a means of achieving status among secondary school children. The present study relates to an inquiry made in 4 schools in North-West England. In an educational system which is highly academic and competitive the rewards for scholastic success enhance a students ego and the regard in which he is held by his contemporaries, his teachers and his social group. When the students scholastic achievement is below average or amounts to failure then this source of reinforcement for his ego and personal status is no longer available. One way the individual can adjust to this situation is to find another acceptable activity by which he can gain the necessary approbation. When another non-academic school activity is held in some regard by staff and pupils, it could be argued that students who failed to achieve success in, and thereby status from their academic attainment might be highly motivated to achieve a high level of performance in this second activity. Across the Great Britain's academically orientated educational system is the traditional high regard for games and sportsmen.
