Harry Hansen's name may serve simply to recall the fact that at one time Scandinavians settled in the midlands and that its bearer descended from them and still lives there. His function is to review books and reviewers, it is well known, are a low sort of folk who don't know enough to became authors and who don't know enough authors to become publishers. A critic may write purely to entertain himself the auto-esoteric function or to impress other critics with his leaning or in the spirit of an evangelist, to announce the truth and elevate the lowly to his level.

Hays has written a thoroughly engaging book on an interesting but complex subject, the history of social anthropology from its beginnings in the nineteenth century to the present. To do this, the author has selected certain subject areas and followed their development in biographical sketches of the scholars involved. This technique adds a personal flavor to the already fascinating study of culture by showing the accidents of history which led certain individuals to take up the investigation of primitive man.

It was his custom during certain lines in the players' scene to talk about waving his handkerchief over his head; as he began his flourish on that particular night, a loud hiss came from somewhere in the upper boxes. Macready learned that the staunch hisser had been Edwin Forrest, the foremost American actor of the time, whose existence had been as a nettle to Macready's thin skin for some years past. This volume is the second in a series which will, when completed, make six books in all. It comprises forty addresses or varying length, including the lectures on citizenship which Root gave both at Yale at Princeton. Likewise it contains the array of incisive arguments made from the floor of the two New York Constitutional Conventions in 1894 and in 1915, together with various speeches on governmental or legal subjects delivered either in the United States Senate or at the gatherings of bar associations.

This article presents information on the book "Financial Chapters of the War," by Alexander Dana Noyes. In this book, six of the twelve chapters cover the first seventeen months of the period of war. The description of the developments during the first month of the war and the remarkable measures of relief resorted to at London to prevent utter collapse of credit make highly interesting reading. Nearly every prediction as to the specific results of the conflict went astray, and the world now knows how foolish it was to suppose that economic exhaustion would force early abandonment of the struggle.

Spender's book recalls an interesting fact not commonly noted, that Louis Botha was born to the citizenship which forty years later he was to reassume under tragic circumstances but with happy results, for he was born In Natal on September 27, 1862, the eighth child in a family of thirteen. Another interesting fact is that the original stock of the Bothas was not Dutch, but French, for there is little doubt that their ancestors were of the Huguenots who fled France after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes.

This article presents information on the collection "Letters of Henry Brevoort to Washington Irving." The letters, drawn from the collection of Grenville Kane, of New York, a grandson of Henry Brevoort, is supplemented by the inclusion, apparently from the same source, of a number of letters to Brevoort, together with a few Irving letters the originals of which were not available when the earlier volumes were issued. Delightful as are the letters of Irving to his lifelong and most intimate friend, It may be said at once that those of Brevoort do not suffer by comparison.

One wonders, therefore, whether the translator Leonard A. Magnus was serious when in his Preface, he described his edition as "intended as a handbook to the increasing number of students of the Russian language, and to reveal to the general public one of the treasures of Russian medieval literature." For any person who knew enough Russian to use this book with the least intelligence could without difficulty avail himself of an edition published in Russia, and the general public can turn to the translation of the work in.

In "A Russian Priest," the Introduction is a short two-page preface by an English canon, James Adderly, who twenty years ago got the idea for his first novel from this story. The Translator's Preface shows this to be a reprint of a version issued in 1891. It is well worth reprinting as an expression of Russian sanity and idealism, which have been so sadly obscured for us by the naturalists. It presents a young priest, ardent for the Christianity of sacrifice, facing the stupidity and venality of an established system.

When the late author Reuben Gold Thwaites was preparing for publication the "Original Journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition" he made diligent search for missing documents, and especially for author John Ordway's long-lost journal. His search in the latter respect was fruitless, although it yielded other items of considerable value. The record kept by Ordway was known to have been purchased for a trifle by Clark and forwarded to theologian John Biddle to aid him in the preparation of his narrative of the memorable journey, published in Philadelphia in 1814.

This article presents information on the works of author Ernst Penzoldt. Author Ernst Penzoldt seeks to relieve his mediocrity by violence. He ruthlessly invents where the store of biographical fact is slim, filling in with whopping incidents of high-class melodrama eroticism and the absurd trappings of the terror novels. He is perfectly willing to pervert the facts, and completely misrepresents Chatterton's parents. Anachronisms do not take him flinch-his eighteenth-century tipplers mix their brandy with uninvented soda water.

The article discusses books and authors. The land of Purilia, surrounded by pink clouds and lulled in eternal melody, lies somewhere between Lilliput and Erewhon. Writer Elmer Rice, author of "Street Scene," has in "A Voyage to Purilia," written a scholarly work on the life and habits of a most extraordinary people. Rice's satire is admirably sustained, with its intricate plot, its absurd solemnity, and its mordacious irony. He has surmounted what must have been enormous difficulties with such apparent ease that never for a moment does the writing threaten to go off key.

In undertaking the impossible Miss Oulton had perhaps more courage than wisdom. It is doubtful in the first place if "The Watsons" is worth finishing. As a fragment belonging to one of the deftest and soundest and wittiest and most un- mannered of English writers, it may do very well. But it should be remembered as a fragment, and as one that bears many imperfections which its author would ruthlessly have cut out before judging it fit for publication.

However wrong and in the long run unwise it may be, it seems to be a natural tactic, and one that has a sure temporary effect, for men and parties to blacken the character of and to distort the facts about their enemies. The enormous mass of international vituperation poured from the press and from the pulpit during the last six years was a phenomenon not peculiar to the Great War; it has been characteristic of every war. And now the same organs recently engaged in spouting hatred against Germany have turned the stream against Russia. Smith, in his entirely laudable anxiety to write unlike English poet and critic Algernon Charles Swinburne, has written the greater part of his book with too much caution. He has been accurate, of course, and very sane, and often witty; but in his hands Jonson does not arrive with the bustle one expected. The biography is all crowded into the first fifty pages and the remaining two hundred and fifty are left wholly free for criticism: the easiest arrangement, perhaps, but in this case not the best. The facts of a poet's life mean little by themselves, no matter how intelligently a scholar may fit them together.

The article discusses books and authors. The intense and widespread interest which republican France manifests in the First Empire is not due to any social or political unrest. There are still many reactionaries in France, both royalist and imperialist, but, since the Boulanger fiasco, they no longer agitate under those names. Moreover, for the moment at least, their agitation is insignificant, and the overwhelming mass of the nation seems heartily, thoroughly republican. The consummation so ardently desired by moderate conservative republicans wherein there shall be two great constitutional parties, conservative and radical, but both republican, seems to have been reached since the last elections, or if not quite attained, to be within sight.

Dudley Buxton. The third book named is an excellent justification of the Kahn system of fellowships, for that system gave Burton his first-hand acquaintance with Asia and enabled him to produce the best general book on the complex humanity of the continent which has yet appeared in any language. Delaporte has also produced a book of high quality, but the subject is much too large for even so large a canvas. Delaporte surmounts the difficulties by scamping those portions which have received most attention from his predecessors. His introduction gives a sketch of the processes of excavation and decipherment which is too thin to be intelligible to any reader not previously informed.

"The Greeks of the New World" is a phrase which the author seems to recall having himself in a moment of incaution applied to the Mayas of Central America and Yucatan. But when he encounters it in others, employed with a high seriousness which he trusts can never have been his, it gives him certain pause. The Maya civilization was the most outstanding in pre-Columbian America; it did resemble the Greek in the multitude of its notable cities and in their inability to form a stable nation; and like the Hellenic culture, the Mayan has left a notable array of architectural ruins, profoundly impressive, and of artistic fragments in sculpture, pottery, painting, gems, and gold-work.

This article presents information on the book "Sixteenth-Century Books: A Bibliography of Literature describing books printed between 1501 and 1601," by James Bennett Childs. The bibliography of sixteenth-century literature has suffered under the spell of that of the fifteenth. The chief interest of the bibliographers of the first half-century after the invention of printing has been typographical. They have produced monographs on the productions of the printing presses of individual towns and on the work of individual printers. There are not a dozen works devoted to the productions of the printing presses of whole nations, though there are comprehensive records of all the known incunabula. The bulk of the material brought together by Childs consists of monographic studies of individual printers and works on the history of printing in cities and provinces.

In this article, the author critically examines the book "Bitter Lemons," by Lawrence Durrell. The author says that books about life among natives are often misleading. An author either pokes fun at the "ridiculous rustics" in his adopted country, or idealizes them as "noble savages" beyond all credible proportions. Durrell is modest in poetic yet incisive prose, he not only brings the Cypriots vividly alive, but traces the emergence of the Enosis question, their "problem," from the wine-shop conversation stage to its ugly, active terrorist evolution.

The forthcoming issue of "The Nation," will tell about a brilliant satirical article by author Arthur Miller scheduled to appear on July 10, 1954. Miller was recently invited to Brussels for the opening of his play, "The Crucible," but the U.S. State Department stalled on his request for a passport until it was too late. At the opening of "The Crucible" were ministers of the Belgian government, a representative of the King, many other high dignitaries of the diplomatic circle, including the American ambassador, and the entire staff of the United States In- formation Service.

The article discusses books and authors. Author E.M. Forster has made an eagerly awaited reappearance with "The Hill of Devi." This is not a novel, nor a critical study of writing, nor a series of essays on the state of the world-though it has elusive elements of all three. It is an emendated, glossed, and enlarged diary of the author's first months in India (1912-13) and of India revisited in 1921, interspersed with letters to relatives and friends and some of their replies. In essence, however, "The Hill of Devi" is a sketch book for "A Passage to India," which is the most discerning book ever written about India.

This article presents information on the seventh volume of the of the Harvard Oriental Series which is a model of accuracy and skill. In this volume various the various parts indicated by the ponderous title are clearly differentiated by type, and all citations are instantly referable to their respective sources, through an ingenious method of using single and double quotation marks, for which the reader, accustomed to the blind alleys of most Sanskrit texts furnished with commentaries, will be very grateful to the editor.

The author Frank Fox of the "The Balkan Peninsula," seems to be an Australian, and he has the large breeziness and dashing offhand manner that belong to the Southern Continent. He is also a newspaper correspondent, and went through the Balkan War of 1912, being then mostly with the Bulgarian army. He has the great merit of showing no partisanship for any one of the contending peoples, and he sees clearly the merits, and Lot less clearly the defects, of Greeks, Serbs, Bulgars, Humans, Albanians, and Turks, knowing, however, comparatively little of the last three named.
