The constitution of the leptomeninx is studied with the aid of the phosphomolybdic acid and ammoniacal silver carbonate technique. Our findings seem to prove that it is entirely or almost entirely derived from the mesodermic layer, and consists of a series of elements distributed in more or less orderly fashion between the dura mater and the brain, arranged in the following layers; (1) arachnoid cellular layer; (2) reticular layer, of syncytial appearance; (3) collagenous and vascular layer; and(4) innermost layer of the pia mater. The details of these layers are studied, with an account of the results obtained by light and by electron microscopy and their relationship. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
