The author reflects on the musical criticism of German composer Ludwig van Beethoven. His significance depends on the people's conception of the function and importance of the art of music. Musical criticism is not solely based on musical taste, different critics may give the same rank for a composer for entirely different reasons. In Beethoven's case, the chaotic state of his criticism is partly due to the difficulty of constructing enough philosophy of music.
