A paper partition chromatographic procedure is described for the separation and identification of aryldiamines, aminophenols and polyhydric phenols used as colouring agents of oxidation-type hair dyes. Twenty-nine compounds were chromatographed on Whatman No. 3 MM paper using, as developing solvent, the top layer of a mixture of 500 ml n-butanol, 100 ml ethanol, 400 ml water, 100 ml acetic acid and 10 g sodium sulphite. Good separations of most combination of compounds were achieved. Where resolutions could not be accomplished, positive identifications could be made through the use of several detecting reagents. The application of this procedure to the analysis of colouring agents of hair dye preparations is described.

6 papers investigating the biological activity of experimental and commercially available cyclic and linear organosiloxane polymeric fluids and chemically related nonpolymeric pure chemicals are summarized. Toxicity studies of an equilibriated copolymer of mixed cyclosiloxanes ((PhMeSiO)x(Me2SiO)) referred to as PMxMMy have shown gross testicular atrophy and microscopic alteration of spermatogenesis in rabbits when the compound is administered percutaneously. Administration by the po route had similar effects in the rat and monkey. Doses of PMxMMy sufficiently high to produce toxic effects in the maternal system of rabbits affected fetal resorption and pup survival. Dermal application of PMxMMy did not markedly increase blood and urine silicone levels in humans. In rats PMxMMy interrupted the normal estrus cycle prevented implantation affected the development of the external genitourinary structure of female pups and interfered with the later stages of spermatogenesis during treatment. Organosiloxane fluids used in industry and as components in cosmetics did not have the adverse effects of PMxMMy. Compounds related to the polymeric mixture depressed male reproductive function in the mouse rat and rabbit the most active compound being 2 6-cis-diphenylhexamethylcyclotetrasiloxane .

1. A direct method for quantitative estimation of peroxide content in dry and hydrated soaps and cosmetics is proposed. 2. Different methods of exposing the samples are discussed. 3. Soaps of different kinds are compared under similar conditions. 4. Development of peroxides in soaps is compared with their respective oils. 5. The influence of free alkali and unsaponified fatty matter is considered. 6. The influence of some chemicals mentioned in literature as antioxidants is tested. 7. We do not consider this experimental series as final, and further utilization of the proposed methods for the investigation of the factors mentioned in this paper and other factors influencing soap is to be made.

This monograph includes the problem of microbial contamination of cosmetics, as well as the practical methods used for the microbiological control of cosmetics.The microbial contamination was discussed separately as primary (contamination of the product itself) and secondary contamination (contamination by the consumer)Author has reservations on the application of bacteriological standards for cosmetics at this time, however author's temporary proposal for then is as follows;Viable aerobic count: less than 100 bacteria/ml or gram.Pathogenic bacteria: not detected.None of the preservatives commonly used in cosmetics to-day is universally active against all kinds of microorganisms. Therefore, preservatives should be used only for the prevention of secondary contamination.Auther tried to examine antimicrobial spectrum of some preservatives now commonly used in cosmetics. The results are shown in the table.The readily applicable methods as a quality control produce to determine the total aerobic counts and pathogenic bacteria were described. In conclusion, it seems to author that a more logical approach and goal at this time is the production of cosmetics under controlled conditions to assuer maximum sanitation.

At present, there is no standardized test method for fastness to light of cosmetic pigments and cosmetic products in which such pigments are used. There are neither unified rules nor special regulations regarding the light sources, the density of test materials, and the expresion of the fastness to light.In order to establish the this method, I wish to submit the first report on the subject matter.This method is designed, in consideration of the marketability of cosmetics. The standard dosage of sunlight was indicated as the light required for the decomposition of 50% of the standard pigment.Sample pigment and standard pigment (0.24mg% sol. of Rohdamin B) solutions were respectively sealed in glass tube and exposed for a suitable period of time to the sunlight, then the fading of color was examined by means of colorimeter.It was concluded that the visible color change of the pigment is parallel to the result obtained by this method.The advantage of this method lies in the simplicity of the structure of apparatus and easiness of their treatments.

The adult nephrotic syndrome as met with in Nairobi is predominantly encountered in young sophisticated African women, most of whom began to use skin-lightening creams containing mercury before the symptomatic onset of their illness. The particular form of mercury involved is well known to cause the nephrotic syndrome in other circumstances-for example, when applied to the skin in the treatment of psoriasis. In these circumstances the pathogenetic mechanism is thought to be of an idiosyncratic type. The use of mercury-containing skin-lightening creams in the patients studied seemed to be particularly associated with a "minimal-change" ("light-negative") renal glomerular lesion, this lesion being present in half of the patients. The prognosis in this group of patients seems remarkably good, with 50% entering remission, 77% of these doing so spontaneously on discontinuing the use of the creams.
