The article focuses on inflation in China from 1937 to 1947. A conclusive study of the development of inflation in China is impossible without more complete data pertaining to the aggregate effect of the wars on China's economy, and it can be made only after the nation has returned to normal. Although the data presented in this paper and the statistics derived there from are not all that one could wish for, they are nevertheless more complete than anything hitherto available, and on a number of critical points, are fairly adequate. The use of these provisional data may likewise find justification in the fact that more definitive figures will probably not be obtainable for many years to come. Perhaps no nation has experienced a more serious inflation than China during the war and postwar years since 1937. In order to survey the current situation, it seems appropriate to review first the manner in which inflationary pressures were set up during the war. In this section the survey is devoted to the developments up to V-J Day in August 1945. Postwar events will be dealt with in the succeeding sections. The movements of prices, as emphasized by the official indices furnish an appropriate starting point.

This article presents abstracts of research articles on economic systems and planning. The paper "Communism on the Other Side of the World" is an attempt at assessing the economic and social results of the economic policy of China on the basis of recent publications. It compares Chinese developments with similar developments in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. The paper discusses the achievements of the communist development policy in China, particularly the validity of growth rates. According to the article "Nationalization As a Problem of Public Economy," the discussion about nationalization problems is predominantly ideological. Beyond this, causes and extensions, as well as regional and sectoral spreading of nationalizing actions, are so widespread and different that general statements are impossible. An analysis of nationalization as a problem of public economy should display how specific public needs are satisfied and who has to pay the price for them. From a legal standpoint it is worth noting that in this way government is capable of accumulating economical and political strength and, through this strength, is also in a position to restrict the scope of private economic activity.

The article discusses the impact of political upheaval on the economic situation in China. The conflict between the Maoists and Liu Shao-chi, head of state and former heir-designate to Mao, has impeded the country's economic development program. The important issue in the fight between the Maoists and Liu-ists is economic policy. Both camps have launched their propaganda to criticize economic and political doctrines of each party. The anti-Maoists oppose the opening up of a free market in the country and Mao Tse-tung's view of modern enterprise. An overview of China's economic condition under Chairman Mao, including foreign trade with leading Western industrial nations and agricultural production, is presented.

The article presents an analysis on the Maoist economic strategy in China. The author emphasizes that the strategy is unique in Communist countries. Mao Tse-tung's concept of an efficient process of economic growth is based on the assumption that local communities have the resources to modernize. Another aspect of the said strategy is the emphasis on the important role of politics in commanding the economy.

The article highlights that during the first five-year plan period from 1953-57, Chinese Communist policymakers pursued the Soviet Union strategy as practiced by general secretary of the communist party Joseph Stalin for economic development with local adaptations. However, given the vastly different factor endowments of Mainland China in the fifties as compared to the Soviet Union of the twenties, Chinese planners were forced to modify significantly their original approach. They thus evolved a new strategy for the second five-year plan from 1958-62, based on intensive utilization of underemployed labor combined with promotion of technological dualism, as a means of maximizing the rate of economic growth. The new model comprised of communes that extended to incorporate the notion of rapid development of a national economy. According to this concept, the state would concentrate the preponderant bulk of its investment resources on the development of the modern sector. This is a sector with a high reinvestment quotient, with practically all of this reinvestment to be channeled into continuing growth of itself. At the same time, the diversion of output from the modern to the rural sector is to be minimized. Therefore, the expansion of the rural sector was to be made a function of its own output and investment.

The resumption of relations with the People's Republic of China has aroused the interest of health workers in the United States concerning the organization and provision of health care in that country. This comprehensive review of the political, economic, cultural and legal determinants which have molded the Chinese system for the delivery of health care throws light on some aspects, and raises questions requiring more information.
