This article presents a study, which highlights educational experience, deemed as an influence on modern and traditional attitudes. The evidence is taken from Hong Kong, China to prove the hypothesis of the above study. A recurrent theme in studies of developing countries stresses the "modernizing" influence of an experience of formal education. It was hypothesized that the different educational experiences of young people in Hong Kong would be associated with patterns of response to 11 statements reflecting "modern" and "traditional" attitudes. It was hypothesized that "modern" responses to the 11 attitude statements would be associated with particular educational experiences, as follows: (a) young people with some experience of secondary education would be relatively "modern" compared with those without secondary education; (b) young people with some experience of higher education would be relatively "modern" compared with those without higher education; and (c) young people with an education exclusively in Anglo-Chinese schools would be relatively "modern" compared with those with an education exclusively in Chinese schools.
